      Leonard Price Thanks I hope this video was helpful. I would drive all the way from Arlington Virginia to their store to look at patterns and wood carving blanks.

      @Dominik Payton I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
      Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

      You’re way too hard on yourself. My first carvings were a disaster. Takes time and practice but you’ll get there.

    Is it better to cut the front pattern or side pattern first and why?

    • @markdmaker3173
      @markdmaker3173  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. It depends on the complexity of the pattern. The side profile is usually more complicated than the front so I will do that first. I will tape it back together and then do the other side. I do the more complicated side first because I seem to be more detail oriented in the beginning of my cuts. after a couple hundred blanks, you’ll figure out which is best for you.

    Got some patterns that are made to sit your figure in a chair, boat, swing, etc,? I have seen hundreds of them standing but not sitting, or even laying on their side (in a hammock, bed, cot, etc.)

    Your redtail is very good. I wish I could find a very detailed bald eagle that could be cut out with scroolsaw & carved.

      Bud Irwin The book on miniatures that I show in this video has a really nice small bald eagle. I’ve carved it once and had really good results until my cat knocked it off the top shelf and broke the legs.

    Mark, I have a question. If you carve a piece from a pattern out of a book, and sell your carving on for example say Etsy can you get sued for copyright violation?

    • @markdmaker3173
      @markdmaker3173  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great question. Hopefully in the book that has the pattern will see copyright free. As an artist I would change the pattern a bit anyways. I would be afraid to copy anything exactly. Disney has made examples of single production small artist to prove a point. I’m not a lawyer but be careful. I would just change it up a little bit.

    This is what I struggle with most!! I can see what I want in the wood.. just can’t get the concept of carving and pulling it out. I love carving sooo much. I try not to get frustrated but sometimes I have to walk away for the day. I’ve been at it for a few years. Any more tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Jeremy from Massachusetts

      I’ve been carving for 40 years and I still get frustrated at times and walk away from it for a day or two. Try making a clay model first. Carve the clay with your wood carving knives just like you would a piece of wood, I hope this is helpful.
