    Two important uses for sub-strafing that I didn't mention:
    - Picking up clams in Clam Blitz
    - Picking up eggs in Salmon Run

  • @FFXIgwyn
    @FFXIgwyn ปีที่แล้ว +79

    Not mentioned but, sub-strafing is a game-changer for Salmon Run. You can deliver eggs so much faster and U-turn away from sudden dangerous enemies.

    • @Kylemsguy
      @Kylemsguy ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This. Also, this is exactly the way I'd recommend practicing sub strafing: when you do an egg throw or drop an egg into the basket, you effectively are able to "sub strafe" out of that, that is, when you complete that action, you are able to immediately start moving at full speed in any direction.
      Sub strafe when you're picking up eggs so that both sides are symmetrical, and you'll soon get the hang of it. It's how I practiced how to sub strafe.
      I also have a handcam sub strafing video on my channel, if anyone's interested in that.

    Another variant that I still don’t have myself - ledge cancelling. Sub strafing right at the top of a ledge allows you to transition smoothly from the wall to the ground above. I still don’t have it down perfectly, but it saves so much time.
    Also, Salmon Run is a great way to practice.

    As a new Splatoon player, I've ignored sub-strafing for quite some time now just because it's so annoyingly hard to get used to. Seeing your video just became the needed wake up call I needed. I'll probably practice this in salmom run since that's where I practiced squid rolling (which is quite a pain to get used to as well ngl ;-;)

    • @Kylemsguy
      @Kylemsguy ปีที่แล้ว

      I find that squid rolling and sub strafing works best when collecting eggs near the basket anyways, so I'd definitely recommend doing it there.
      Also, it might be good to know when to sub strafe vs. squid roll when it comes to collecting eggs too. When you're too close to the basket, a squid roll is too far and the lag makes it slower than sub strafing. You could still use it to avoid chip damage like flyfish or stingers, but often it's better to just substrafe.

    Another cool thing that can be tricky to learn but is super cool to pull off is sub-strafing into a squid roll. It allows you to do cool tricks like squid rolling forwards and also allows you to do it in situations where you don’t get the chance to build momentum.

  • @Zorconic

  • @Kylemsguy

    "For some reason shooters are able to dip in and out of the ink two frames faster than the rest of the weapon classes"
    This was a specific buff to shooters to counter dualies back in Splatoon 2, back when dualies were dominant. Not sure why they decided that was necessary, but it's nice to know the context.
    It also made shooters a lot more nimble and fast-paced than in Splatoon 1. The Splattershot Jr. feels so much slower in that game coming back from Splatoon 2/3.

    I know this tech for years, but never used it in a fight, mainly because I use backline weapons like Charger and Splatling and with them preparing my shots. But I start using it more in Salmon Run (mostly for fun) and last time in Clam Blitz as I used the Rapid Blaster, I had use sub-strafing if I not got killed before. 😆
    It happened, because I try to mix-up my opponent (shoot, dive in ink, move & repeat). In the middle of a fight my finger goes to the R trigger, because I wanted to retreat. In that moment I know the Salmon Run experience shine through.

    I got used to sub-strafing while playing a lot of Salmon Run in Splatoon 2. not only does it boost your survivability, but collecting eggs becomes much more effective. For example, if there's a bunch of eggs 3 meters from basket, you can deposit them much faster if you use the technique rather than slowly and clumsily swim from side to side.

    • @davidhower7095

  • @Jexcii
    @Jexcii ปีที่แล้ว

    I've never tried to do this much because i could never find anyone explaining when to actually use it but also i do largely use shooters so main strafing was easier to muscle memory as i was learning the game. I think i'll try the same thing of drilling it into my head though since it's the main movement technique that i don't have much grasp of and it always gets mentioned

  • @mellow6268

    Im curious about the utility of sub strafing with charge hold weapons. I play Nautilus, so I'll charge a bit and dip back to hold enough charge to fight back in in many of the cases you showed, so I can't really dodge around strafing without losing my ability to fire back. In what situations would sub strafing be useful for me?

  • @spoon_s3
    @spoon_s3 ปีที่แล้ว

    btw when you are squid rolling, your landing position and trails are almost locked, makes it extremely predictable. squid roll is also much slower than substrafing. Not to mention that you can't do a *little* stall/stop/reset momentum (to possibly jump over a ledge)/fast multiple turns with squid roll.
    That's why i don't nearly consider squid roll as an essencial skill or good in 1v1 scenarios

    I confused on the commands. Do you sub>swim>release sub or hold sub? Holding sub ties up my trigger finger from shooting while releasing throws a bomb if I mistime my button presses. I'm curious if pros use multiple fingers on triggers or they never misinput

      with me, i swim>sub> swim again, while still holding sub. only let go of sub once youre already submerged in the ink. then when swimming, thats when you shift your finger from R to ZR. That's how I do it anyway
