I've seen Dave live a few times, and got to meet him, and hang out with him in Chicago, he's such a cool guy and amazing musician and songwriter, my fav!
Only the most discerning among us fully appreciate Dave Alvin, it seems. Wonderful talent, and really nice guy. This show in the video was about a year after he did a fantastic acoustic show in Fort Worth, UPSTAIRS at the White Elephant. He returned in '98, and in 2008. Each time different, and spectacular. Have seen him in many other venues and never fails to produce.
...looking for ages for the lyrics to this song from one of my faves! ...so i had to find it out for myself. ...feel free to correct me, plz! Thirty Dollar Room In a thirty dollar room, next to the airport I came here to dance, through the night Some people leavin', Some people comin' home There's a sign on the door, says check out eleven And the woman's here in, land on the table She said, she'd be right back, But i get the feeling she's gone So i tell myself one way or another If she don't come back, there just be another Who believe for a while I can promise the moon, Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room Smokin' Cigarettes, down to the filter 'Cause the pack's running low And i don't feel like walking outside I don't feel like anything at all Lookin' round the room And i wondering who slept here and Where they were gone and what they were thinkin' Staring all night long at this sinful wall So i tell myself one way or another When someone moves out, there's always another Who believe for a while they can promise the moon, Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room In a thirty dollar room, next to the airport I came here to dance, through the night Some people leavin', Some people comin' home So i tell myself one way or another If it ain't this town, i move to another And believe for a while i can promise the moon, Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room
I just heard this song for the first time today and I've listened to it several times. Dave is a master at creating a scene in my mind with a song.

Thirty Dollar Room
In a thirty dollar room, next to the airport
I came here to dance, through the night
Some people leavin',
Some people comin' home
There's a sign on the door, says check out eleven
And the woman's here in, land on the table
She said, she'd be right back,
But i get the feeling she's gone
So i tell myself one way or another
If she don't come back, there just be another
Who believe for a while I can promise the moon,
Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room
Smokin' Cigarettes, down to the filter
'Cause the pack's running low
And i don't feel like walking outside
I don't feel like anything at all
Lookin' round the room
And i wondering who slept here and
Where they were gone and what they were thinkin'
Staring all night long at this sinful wall
So i tell myself one way or another
When someone moves out, there's always another
Who believe for a while they can promise the moon,
Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room
In a thirty dollar room, next to the airport
I came here to dance, through the night
Some people leavin',
Some people comin' home
So i tell myself one way or another
If it ain't this town, i move to another
And believe for a while i can promise the moon,
Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room
Shinin' through the window of a thirty dollar room
great!!!!

Well I’m gonna play the blues tonight man
‘Cause it's just what I do........." Dave Alvin
