    Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) is an enabling provision that empowers women to take strict action against any instance of cruelty or harassment that gets meted out to them in their matrimonial homes1. It deals with the violence done on women after her marriage by her husband or her in-laws or any relative of the husband23. This offence is cognizable, non-bailable, non-compoundable and triable by a Magistrate of the first class3. The accused is subjected to 3 years of punishment or a fine
