The first time I watched this DC Short It left me amazed though there was one character that really bugged me alot. As someone who wishes to learn more in art, if/when the day comes and I meet someone like this I hope to have the strength and will to keep on working and not let them get in my head. I know that this short is supposed to represent him in a bad light anyways but I just felt that I needed to speak about it since it really moved me. For the person or artist who gets to read this comment remember this: *"If you have an idea that you genuinely think is good, don't let some idiot talk you out of it"* *_-Stan Lee_*
Death is a great character, in part because she's not atypical for the sake of having an atypical character (i.e. not a spooky skeleton in a robe), but because it legitimately makes a lot of sense for her. She was spooky and hard to deal with, resenting the fear and frustration mortals showed when they died. Then she was confronted by one such soul about whether or not *she* knew what it was like to die or lose life. So she did life a mortal life and died. After that, she became a last voice of comfort for the dead. Someone to tell them it was going to be okay and not to be scared.
Beautiful portrayal of the classic Hellenistic Death in the modern age. It is difficult for modern writers capture the classical feel of such beings. It is what makes Gaiman's work feel so eerie and wonderful.
I missed the DC showcase clips. They depitcted a wide range of DC characters (and not just shoving Batman down our throats) in various original styles while staying faithful to their Universe's narrative and concepts.
yes. While I'm fan of Batman it's boring that he's in everything. It's like first Suicide Squad was more "Harley&Joker" despite they've actually deleted some Joker scenes. DC is one of 2 biggest western comic books lore, it's not "Batman vs Joker plus their pals, sometimes Superman being so OP noone can match him"
Destruction also left because he desperately wanted to become some kind of artist, a creative, but he can't because he's Destruction so all of his art is terrible.
@@spesamissaest1312 For whatever reason she sees fit. The endless are omnipotent, they are not bound by our values or morals. She even cursed some people with literal immoratality for offending her sometimes.
No and this is not a knock against this animation, a story like this is about pulling at the heartstrings and getting an emotional response, serialization leads to more redundancy, redundancy leads to a level of apathy, the reason why this story works so well is it is so far out of the norm of what to expect from DC, it’s not Batman fighting joker for the billionth time, it’s not Superman vs Lex. Or justice league vs darkseid it’s a very subtle down to earth and human story
@@10tailedbijuu At best you could do a miniseries about The Endless, which is kind of what The Sandman: Endless Nights is. But you don't want an open-ended continuous series with this stuff. Even the original 75 issue The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman had an ending planned in his head when the beginning was being published. The Sandman stuff should only be created when there's a truly interesting idea worth doing. Not because there's issue or episode slots to fill ad-infinitum.
If you ever want to know why death is a cheerful goth girl. Spoiler warning. In the beginning she was kinda happy with her job which is seeing the birth of every being and their death but as many lives trive the more her job as death started to get harder and harder to the point she was just sick of it and left which has the untimely effect of the dead not going to the afterlife and everyone in the endless were also getting sick of their purpose but all of them except one still did their job. Death on the other hand, made a way to not let her lose her passion and that is for every 100 years she will turn into a mortal for a day and die, so that she can appreciate life now and then. Oh the one endless that stop doing the job is Destruction because he discovered one way or another humanity will find ways to destroy themselves and he isn't needed for guiding them.
Everyone simps for Death here but no one seems to mention how the voices in Omata's head are so fucking relatable as someone who has been haunted by these for most of my life. Anxiety. Depression. self hate and shame, guilt, remorse. All of them are there.
Fun fact about Death of the endless: it’s mentioned in the comics that she wants Batman dead more than any of his rouges, because knowing Batman he has cheated her too many damn times due to his plot armour. Can’t say I blame her, I get fed up with writers always depicting Batman as someone who is 90% human & 10% Demi-god when he’s supposed to be a human at peak physical condition.
I love how Neil Gaiman show us this perspective of Death. In most movies out there, we see Deaath as a sinister and creepy creature. But in Sandman universe, Death is so gentle and kindness. Sandman is one of teh best comics i've ever read, and I recommend you all to read too.
If you think about it death you would think is a traumatic experience. It’s entirely possible that you might deserve a friendly face when you go beyond the rim
I read this poem a super long time ago saying why would death be this sinister figure beckoning people towards their demise. Death would be charming and encouraging because they know eventually every great leader, athlete, artist and thinker would inevitably be in their grasp. No matter what they did to escape it, Death will see you one day and welcome you to an eternal sleep.

That personable depiction of Death. It’s so… empathetic, like you just meet this person and you can tell them anything, and they’d know, they’d get it, get you. With a warm little smile and compassionate patience. On the other side of the coin I’m reminded of Discworld’s Death. By the same token just as personable yet affably naive in the intricacies of human experience yet profoundly wise about the nature of existence. His eyes are hollow, his smile permanent and grim and his voice booming and inexorable. But still just as friendly and kind. One is distant yet curious, the other intimately aware.
She is one of many Death personifications in DC. There is also The Black Racer, death as an inevitability, Necron, Death as your enemy, and her, death as your friend.
To be fair, she basically had the same design and personality way back in the early issues of Sandman. I think people have been simping for her for a looong time
Demons are creatures of regrets. Tearing down others who still have the ability to dream. Death is not evil or something to be feared. Death is a promise and one we all share.

@@RavenwolfFoxtrack yes, because for most characters that are POC, their skin colour has an impact on their story and their character, even then it's not the same because it's not like white people are lacking for representation or have had representation taken from them and mocked. For example, if magneto from x men was played by a black actor that wouldnt be okay because his character is shaped around the fact he was Jewish and a survivor of you know what. In this case the character of death is literally an anthropomorphic personification of the concept of death, she's not a person, she doesn't have a race, having a black actress play her doesn't mean anything.

@@ghoulsino i simply pointed out that her skin tone does not resemble this Death (or the one from the comics) Thus she doesn't look like the Death that we all knew and love. How is that racist?
I think that western comic/animation writers sometimes exaggerate when they try to portrait bullying. This guy is remembering that he was already an adult when a 50+ y/o art professor literally steps on his painting in front of all the other adult students. Something at that level would generate a response from some of the students (if not in front of him, to the professor's superior) and get the professor fired. My guess is that these writers do that to portray how the character felt in a given situation, rather than showing a realistic or relatable scene. The writer could instead show a series of quick flashbacks showing people criticizing his art and some saying he probably should consider other careers. It would hurt even if this was said kindly but by someone who he'd expect encouragement, like his parents. I think more people would relate more to that and the scene wouldn't spark suspension of belief on an animation that is supposed to be psychologically realistic. Vertigo stories are made for adult, intelligent audience. Drama stories requires the audience to be empathetic, so you can expect them to make at least a little effort in understanding the character distress, rather than being so blatant like this. [SPOILER COMMENT} I think part 2 did this right on the scene with his father.
@@Zurrenarr45 I hate to agree but yeah... A love or archetypes or 'stereotypes' are based off realities that existed and quite still do. With bullying, even if most of us want to say we will be heroic in as many scenarios as we can be, a lot of times we will miss being a hero when we are actually needed. It just happens.

As someone who wishes to learn more in art, if/when the day comes and I meet someone like this I hope to have the strength and will to keep on working and not let them get in my head. I know that this short is supposed to represent him in a bad light anyways but I just felt that I needed to speak about it since it really moved me. Ofcorse the whole short is just masterful, and all the people who helped make it are truly artists. It's really interesting that Gaiman designed Death to be so lovely.
Its the same in the apocalypse

Mysterious woman: "Wish granted!"
MY QUEEN!!!
Why did no one tell me these existed???
Its the only one that does and I feel its the only one that will ever do the source material justice
Huh?
Beautiful portrayal of the classic Hellenistic Death in the modern age. It is difficult for modern writers capture the classical feel of such beings. It is what makes Gaiman's work feel so eerie and wonderful.
One can only hope that Death in real life, if it is a sentient entity, is just as kind and caring as the one portrayed in Sandman's comics.
One fun thing is.. she warned him.. she said smoking woudl kill him.. she gave him a chance to extend his life.. he decided to not take it.
I mean he did say that he didn’t want to and it was the least of his problems
She already knew when and how, he was going to die.
@@ttv_zombiefetus1710Yeah, he does live in the same city as the Joker😬

definitely
I agree with that
@@primenarrator3265 me too
No and this is not a knock against this animation, a story like this is about pulling at the heartstrings and getting an emotional response, serialization leads to more redundancy, redundancy leads to a level of apathy, the reason why this story works so well is it is so far out of the norm of what to expect from DC, it’s not Batman fighting joker for the billionth time, it’s not Superman vs Lex.
Oh the one endless that stop doing the job is Destruction because he discovered one way or another humanity will find ways to destroy themselves and he isn't needed for guiding them.
the answer is, and always will be, because most people are sheep.
Everyone simps for Death here but no one seems to mention how the voices in Omata's head are so fucking relatable as someone who has been haunted by these for most of my life. Anxiety. Depression. self hate and shame, guilt, remorse. All of them are there.
Just notice when she asked that guy if he was ready he was transparent he was dead
You talking about at 4:04? Yeah that guy looks like he was going to the afterlife too
Fun fact about Death of the endless: it’s mentioned in the comics that she wants Batman dead more than any of his rouges, because knowing Batman he has cheated her too many damn times due to his plot armour.
Can’t say I blame her, I get fed up with writers always depicting Batman as someone who is 90% human & 10% Demi-god when he’s supposed to be a human at peak physical condition.
I love the background music it’s soothing like her voice
I love how Neil Gaiman show us this perspective of Death. In most movies out there, we see Deaath as a sinister and creepy creature. But in Sandman universe, Death is so gentle and kindness.
Sandman is one of teh best comics i've ever read, and I recommend you all to read too.

One of my absolute favourite pieces of DC media, ever
I read this poem a super long time ago saying why would death be this sinister figure beckoning people towards their demise. Death would be charming and encouraging because they know eventually every great leader, athlete, artist and thinker would inevitably be in their grasp. No matter what they did to escape it, Death will see you one day and welcome you to an eternal sleep.
Sad because Death was probably the kindest and most understanding being he interacted with in his short life
Bruh, he really dropped his painting on the floor, trampled on it, then proceeded to tell him he's worthless as a artist in thinly-veiled "professionalism". I'm am absolutely aghasted that hands were not thrown. That prick of a teacher needs to be fired
And yet people who paint multiple blocks in different colors are considered “ modern artists”
Good luck with that. Its likely said teach likely is in charge of the department or school.
Its likely the teacher saw that he was indeed talented and proceeded to destroy him.
Two things he did right there.. He insulted him but trampling his painting and then publically mocked him
No matter what his chance as a artist in that school is done for.
The teacher likely has done that for decades

That personable depiction of Death.
It’s so… empathetic, like you just meet this person and you can tell them anything, and they’d know, they’d get it, get you.
With a warm little smile and compassionate patience.
On the other side of the coin I’m reminded of Discworld’s Death.
By the same token just as personable yet affably naive in the intricacies of human experience yet profoundly wise about the nature of existence.
His eyes are hollow, his smile permanent and grim and his voice booming and inexorable.
But still just as friendly and kind.
One is distant yet curious, the other intimately aware.
So, when you die a beautiful goth girl just guides you to the afterlife, seems like a win for me lol.

In all other media, Neil Gaiman's Death is a young white woman. Why is it so hard for Netflix to get that done right?
It's not even a person, just get over your racism, because that's all it is no matter what you want to tell yourself and no matter the bullshit excuses you make
@@april-ludgate-karate-dwyer9556 I bet you would be complaining if a traditional black character was replaced with a white character.
@@april-ludgate-karate-dwyer9556 plus, Gaiman himself gave the okay. So it's just people being butthurt over nothing.

CYNTHONI - DEATH OF THE ENDLESS
2:37 She warned him.
Death. Eldest sister of the Endless ones. They merely exist, everywhere, every when, in every reality at once
Death is my favorite. (:
[SPOILER COMMENT}
I think part 2 did this right on the scene with his father.
You’d be surprised. This happens more often than you might think.
In this case I would say the shortness was a factor. They didn't have time for subtlety.
