When it comes to comparing homogeneous groups and heterogeneous groups, the heterogeneous groups create the one thing that homogeneous groups can not, and that's meaningful competition. The more diversity there is, the more meaningful competition can arise to accelerate processes like efficiency, quality, survival... No matter what field we are talking about, whatever group you can define as competitive agents, so long as they are operating in a complex system, the diverse grouping will always create a more efficient system (by proxy, a more complex system).
