Unrelated to the video but I was watching your one on contrasts and it got me to really try out wet blending on a figure to transition colours across a model. Something I was too scared to do until I just watched you do it so casually. Gave me the confidence and a kick to just...do it. I'm not good at it yet but I was quite pleased with the outcome from just a little bit of effort. So...I guess post is just to say thanks for the confidence :)

Just joining the hobby I get to see your videos over the span of time, from years ago to last week, and you never change that attitude. So thank you for joining me on this adventure. Well worth the likes and subscribes. As for green, when I was in the army we were taught that the color most perceptible to the human eye is green. We see more shades of green than any other color. This is a strong reason that night vision devices use green hues even though red has no effect on your night vision (without extra light). The human brain is able to pick out more contrasts in green and it gives a superior detection for us. I read a single study a year back or so that talked about why we see more greens and that it may be linked to survival mechanisms. Seeing many greens in a world of camouflaged animals can provide some protection. It was only one study though so it might not be exactly right. Once again thank you for the HC series and just being yourself.

Vince, I’m coming in to comment late but I have say that I consider myself a intermediate in the hobby and I think that this information is very valuable and not well covered on any other mini channel. There are plenty of artist that discuss brush techniques like loaded brush, wet blending, etc but I am coming to the realization that what we do on the palette (color selection, mediums used, etc) is atleast as important as how we apply paint to the model. Thank you for this and please keep it up.
invaluable for its colour theory, i've watched a few of these now and what i like is how you developed this series of not only what works, complimentary colours and probably the most important is what undercoats to use and why and how those colours impact on each other. I`m not a trained artist, have very much learned by trial and error as well as watching other peoples videos, which mostly fall into the category of this this because, Your why do this because, brings the explanations to a whole new level, thank you

what i would like to see you do Vince is a discussion of your thinking process in selecting colors and color combinations. i dont have an artist background and i have issues wilt selecting the right combinations of colors and highlights.
The psychology of color - rarely discussed and very valuable! I'd love it if you continued the series and went into this level of depth with the rest of the primary & secondary colors.

There's a picture that represents the spectrum of colors humans can see as a convex, three pointed surface, and green by far dominates the other colors in the raw surface area of that representation; I don't know how much that's a function of our eyes, or the color itself, but always found that interesting. If you spend any time around a forested area you really get an appreciation for this in real life; there seem to just be more different shades of green that exist normally in nature than anything else.
All colour theory is useful. Helps to hear different people telling the same thing. Gives a wider perspective. Always happy to hear you revealing your knowledge Vince. A mine of info on all aspects of the hobby. More colour theory please even though l should know it already.

Hey Vince, I almost forgot to say yes this is a wonderfully helpful format of video! I really appreciate this one a lot! I know I'd love to see another one like it for any other color (all of them, some of them, whatever!), and the fact you picked green is particularly helpful to me! I can't recall if elsewhere in some other reply I may have made previous mention of the giant (yet wonderful) pain in the ass project I've been working on... oh... the past year and a half (maybe more like two years now): the jungle themed Adeptus Mechanicus Skiitari force. I recently acquired a few squads of the "Imperial Dead Dogs" (terrible stand-in name fr Savlar Chem Dogs but gets the point across. Wonderful miniatures though) from Wargame Exclusive. There's a lot of custom lore I'm crafting to go along with this army (first one I've put together since... 3rd Ed. 40K? ☺️ talk about a learning curve!), and I'm sort of integrating these Savlar Chem Dogs with this Ad Mech Skiitari force but anyway trying to come up with basing techniques and worst of all a uniform paint scheme for everything has been rough. I've had many ideas but sticking to one thing had been difficult. Nonetheless, the color green had taken a central role. Any help or suggestions you might have in this direction of things would be. Just, unbelievably appreciated! Although I have managed to make some progress constructing the bases, although my way is still somewhat tedious and time consuming, the results ain't too shabby but still any help on anything in the department of jungle terrain, or maybe an appropriate paint schema that you know of for Ad Mech, that would be incredible and I'd be only too happy to send a few fellas your way for video making purposes if you're interested. I have plenty of Skitarii grunts but not quite as many of the Chem Dogs (the ones I really need the help with too, uggh!) but I could still send one or two at least or I'd happily work something, hell, anything out, I think if this sounds appealing as a video idea in some way. Anyway, let me again say thanks for this one particular video, like, a whole hell of a lot! Green IS one tricky color to paint indeed, imo and there are sparse few videos on the color in regards to mini painting! Love it! I have been waiting on this topic to come back up since you started a deeper dive in ep. 53 how to paint purple. I'd love to see you take a crack at all of the them, as well as a deep dive on the neutral (?) black, white, browns, and greys. I know, asking a lot, but you've kept it going and kept us all astounded and suffering from anticipation for saturday to come this long. Or at least just me.
Very useful as just getting back into the painting. Knowing the way the different tones can interact is very interesting. It certainly encouraged me to try a few different things out myself.
The issue that I have with green is that because it is so versatile in it's look, it is hard for me to find a good measuring stick. There are so many colors that places call "green" but they all can vary differently in what they look like. For Kimera Kolors, Pthalo Green looks much different than just mixing Pthalo Blue (green shade) and Cool Yellow together. That's wild to me. You would think they would look very close because they are both "greens" but they aren't exactly the same green. When it comes to painting, finding a "true" green is my life long mission.
Nice! One of the things I look forward to playing with is "go away green" which is the color (possibly color range) that Disney uses to say "this isn't interesting, keep moving" inside their parks. It's supposed to be a lighter greenish-blue that blends in well with concrete, the sky and foliage.
Love these videos, so useful in understanding the colour and I'm becoming much more comfortable mixing colours and experimenting to see what I can create!
This video was interesting because while academically I knew, in the back of my mind, that the color green covered a large spectrum I never really thought about how many different hues we interpret as green and what we associate with certain hues. It certainly provides some food for thought about what kinds of reactions one can elicit depending on what shade of green is used, which is useful in general, but more specifically if one happens to be painting something Nurgle themed. I think this series is a great idea and would definitely enjoy seeing you analyze and dissect other colors with this same kind of deep dive video.
Love the Green as a Miniature painters "4th primary color" so to speak. Also, thank you for pointing out that contrast and grunge can mix. Ive been doing this a while with my guard army and people ask how I make it look so "gritty yet bright". this is basically what i did. I started with a dark Green and then did bright highlights. Great stuff. Would love to see more on red, blue, yellow. etc...
I really enjoyed this one, hope to see more like it. I think the videos where you explore the more theoretical aspects of painting are extremely valuable and something you don't get from a lot of people.

What's a good shadow color for green? I'm painting shadow spectres and I wanna give em a ghostly kinda vibe. They're gonna be purple with green crystals, cloth and eye lenses.
Nice video, as usual. ;) Have always hated painting green. Think I have twice as many green paints as any other colour and don't like any of them. Seems like it should be an easy colour to paint since it's literally everywhere but that just means your eyes are super primed to pick out any mistakes. Video was great food for thought. I'll have to give a green colour scheme another try to keep that blue-yellow split in mind. See if I can't get something more passable out of it. :) Cheers Vince!
I would love more videos exploring colours like this one. Would it be correct to say that green is a special colour because it can be either warm or cool, depending on what colours you mix it with? I can't think of any other colours that have this property (besides grey). I have a Dark Angels army and I chose a dark blue/green colour scheme because I wanted the appearance of emerald marble like armour.
Yes, Green is very interesting because it goes cold or warm, has lots of different other hues it can contain and still stay "green" to the eye. Other examples are Magenta, Purple, Brown and Grey as you mentioned.
Love the video hope to see more on the different colors. Also as part of the series would love to see a 'picking army colors color theory video' like how different colors convey different feelings to the army.
No love for the Kimera Phtalo Green? It's my favorite starting point for mixing green! Anyway, very informative and interesting. I'd love to see more of these kinds of videos. Sometimes you watch a tutorial, and they go "today we are doing gold, so let's start out with painting this guy green, because it's obviously going to end up gold". The whys and hows of color is just as important as "where to I put my highlight". Please do continue doing this!
Just haven't gotten a chance to try the Kimera paints yet, they are famously out of stock every time I've tried to order, but I plan on giving them a try. :)

The best way of finding out the exact date and time is to join the "Kimera Kolors Painting Club" Facebook group, as Kimera posts there in advance. Oh wait, I'm already subscribed, silly me. :-) I have a couple of questions on this (colors being so much fun to me): - What would be a saturated dark green? (green's equivalent of midnight blue)? - On the non-natural "bubble gum" green, what would be a possible shading color for it? (My brain doesn't compute that one.) - Is there any other color than green that has such a "wide reach" (i.e. surviving mixing with a lot of colors)? Browns, maybe, though browns would deserve a whole episode in and of themselves, wouldn't they? - How much of color perception (and thus naming) is impacted by the color of iris of the viewer? (Undoubtedly, culture / learning impacts naming more. ;) A suggestion: this video being linked to color theory "in practice" (or made "feel-able"), how about showing people a way to de-saturate the color of the day with its opposite, and how you'd use it? I like using green + orange as that example. ;)
1) Basically just intense green with some black often, or even very deep blue just mixed in with a little deep brown to cut it. 2) Payne's Grey mixed with green (dark blue/black) 3) Blue has a wide space (which dips into green) and arguably Red (expeically with Crimson and Magenta in the mix) 4) A good amount honestly, but we can also talk in wavelengths to speak more objectively. Good idea, I will play with that too.

If you've stated it before I missed it. Why don't you like to paint metal mini's? Have you painted any of the new Bones Black from Reaper? They're regular bones material? Just a simple curiosity on my part.
Partially unrelated, but… I take umbrage with you calling blue-greens "artificial", there are plenty of blue-greens found in nature. Turquoise and verdigris are both formed from the oxidization of minerals, through exposure to air or water. Teal is named for a color appearing on the head of a duck by the same name. Blue-greens are more of a water or air meets earth, whereas brown-greens would be soil and plants. It was a very interesting video and would love to see more, especially on blue, violet, and purple.
It's a fair point, I was meaning only how we tend to interpret it. Most colors of course exist in nature and we just tend to see deep greens and browns as more "natural" due to prevalence. But of course, that's just sort of a generalization. Individuals and cultures can have some very different preconceptions of colors and their meanings and these things are quite fluid over time. I do like your comparison of the air-water vs. earth water/air. That's an interesting framing for sure. More are coming for sure. :)
The colour of that VGC Verdigris effect paint reminds me of old '50s household appliances. Think you might be onto something with most blue-greens looking a bit artificial.
Warp stone and other radiation effects are reminiscent of bioluminescence in nature which is why we recognize the effect instantly and it feels natural
Hey Vince. Not necessarily a green question, but quite literally green adjacent: Imperial Fists and what I perceive as lime green. It seems different people have a different boundary in what they perceive as yellow, and how much cold can be added before that person begins to read the yellow as green; either by shading with blue, or more likely, with a cold grey. I've noticed a lot of Imperial Fist armies, to my eyes at least, look lime rather than yellow, and I know I'm not alone. Equally, I tend to perceive orange as yellow until quite a lot of red has been added into the shadows. I know you should always paint your models for your own pleasure, but if you want your yellows to read as yellow to most viewers, if you're painting for competition for example, is there a more objective hue between orange and yellow and between yellow and green that you can use, that will give the most people a "yellow" experience?
I think the key is to follow the 50% rule. As long as 50% plus of the space is in solidly in the middle of the spectrum, then you are going to read as yellow. You just want to avoid any blue tone underneath, which most black primers are just dark blue, so that is why it often appears a little blue.
Good idea for a series. Would love an orange focusing on Caucasian flesh, or actually would love a flesh deep dive to cover all colors of Earthling skin and especially a focus on using Warcolours flesh tones correctly (I know I’m +1ing that topic since you’ve mentioned it before).
yeah, Orange is thin in tones we recognize as orange, but has so many interesting permutations and uses. It would be a good episode. The flesh tones will be a multi-parter I suspect. :)
Im so interested in a miniature where the theme is everything is the wrong color. Toxic things are red, life is yellow or blue. Dead things are orange. Stuff like that. I wonder what it would look like if it could be pulled off well. Thank you for the excellent lesson

Because we are all just animals deep down, and it's a defense mechanism to see prey thru the trees n leaves n all dat green, is why we would see more shades of green. Nice Video ! Keep up the good work !
I understand that we are lead to believe that green is blue and yellow, but I always thought it was more cyan and magenta. This is for the greens that we think of mainly. As for the series I really like it :D I also like that you did some highlighting to show us the difference, I find it way more helpful than just saying there is a difference.
CMKY (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) is a subtractive colour model that works by filtering a broadband spectrum(white) background down into its constituent colours - used in the printing industry because we predominantly print on a white background. This is different from the RBG colour model which Vince is using which is an additive colour model. So your not wrong exactly but you are using a different colour model to Vince who is using an additive colour model. Please correct me if I am wrong, I’m still fuzzy on these details.
Well explained and yes. I am sticking to the more traditional RBG as it's what people are familiar with, but of course, we could have a whole different discussion on CMKY and there are artists in miniature painting that swear by it.
Vince Venturella that would make an interesting video, it makes sense to go over it seeings how we are using inks over a zenithal highlighted background which is bears a lot of similarities to the printing industry. Also with lots of people now using contrast paints it’s probably as relevant as ever.

I am sure it has to be somewhat evolution and the abundance of greens around us for millions of years, but that's a pure guess. :)

Although I have managed to make some progress constructing the bases, although my way is still somewhat tedious and time consuming, the results ain't too shabby but still any help on anything in the department of jungle terrain, or maybe an appropriate paint schema that you know of for Ad Mech, that would be incredible and I'd be only too happy to send a few fellas your way for video making purposes if you're interested. I have plenty of Skitarii grunts but not quite as many of the Chem Dogs (the ones I really need the help with too, uggh!) but I could still send one or two at least or I'd happily work something, hell, anything out, I think if this sounds appealing as a video idea in some way.
Anyway, let me again say thanks for this one particular video, like, a whole hell of a lot! Green IS one tricky color to paint indeed, imo and there are sparse few videos on the color in regards to mini painting! Kinda feel funky trying to smuggle my own project into this all in this seemingly less than stealthy way but I figured, failing all else, maybe it would help generate an idea for a future video if nothing else, related, less related or unrelated entirely. Your videos have content that is almost always helpful so I'm confident I'll be happy any which way things go!

Love it! I have been waiting on this topic to come back up since you started a deeper dive in ep. 53 how to paint purple. I'd love to see you take a crack at all of the them, as well as a deep dive on the neutral (?) black, white, browns, and greys. I know, asking a lot, but you've kept it going and kept us all astounded and suffering from anticipation for saturday to come this long. Or at least just me.

The issue that I have with green is that because it is so versatile in it's look, it is hard for me to find a good measuring stick. There are so many colors that places call "green" but they all can vary differently in what they look like. For Kimera Kolors, Pthalo Green looks much different than just mixing Pthalo Blue (green shade) and Cool Yellow together. That's wild to me. You would think they would look very close because they are both "greens" but they aren't exactly the same green. When it comes to painting, finding a "true" green is my life long mission.
Nice! One of the things I look forward to playing with is "go away green" which is the color (possibly color range) that Disney uses to say "this isn't interesting, keep moving" inside their parks. It's supposed to be a lighter greenish-blue that blends in well with concrete, the sky and foliage.

This video was interesting because while academically I knew, in the back of my mind, that the color green covered a large spectrum I never really thought about how many different hues we interpret as green and what we associate with certain hues. It certainly provides some food for thought about what kinds of reactions one can elicit depending on what shade of green is used, which is useful in general, but more specifically if one happens to be painting something Nurgle themed.
I think this series is a great idea and would definitely enjoy seeing you analyze and dissect other colors with this same kind of deep dive video.

Love the Green as a Miniature painters "4th primary color" so to speak. Also, thank you for pointing out that contrast and grunge can mix. Ive been doing this a while with my guard army and people ask how I make it look so "gritty yet bright". this is basically what i did. I started with a dark Green and then did bright highlights. Great stuff. Would love to see more on red, blue, yellow. etc...

What's a good shadow color for green? I'm painting shadow spectres and I wanna give em a ghostly kinda vibe. They're gonna be purple with green crystals, cloth and eye lenses.
A deep purple works, black can also do the trick of course, you can also get a good color from a deep hull red or something similar mixed with green.

Have always hated painting green. Think I have twice as many green paints as any other colour and don't like any of them. Seems like it should be an easy colour to paint since it's literally everywhere but that just means your eyes are super primed to pick out any mistakes.
Video was great food for thought. I'll have to give a green colour scheme another try to keep that blue-yellow split in mind. See if I can't get something more passable out of it. :)

I would love more videos exploring colours like this one. Would it be correct to say that green is a special colour because it can be either warm or cool, depending on what colours you mix it with? I can't think of any other colours that have this property (besides grey). I have a Dark Angels army and I chose a dark blue/green colour scheme because I wanted the appearance of emerald marble like armour.
Yes, Green is very interesting because it goes cold or warm, has lots of different other hues it can contain and still stay "green" to the eye. Other examples are Magenta, Purple, Brown and Grey as you mentioned.

Anyway, very informative and interesting. I'd love to see more of these kinds of videos. Sometimes you watch a tutorial, and they go "today we are doing gold, so let's start out with painting this guy green, because it's obviously going to end up gold". The whys and hows of color is just as important as "where to I put my highlight". Please do continue doing this!

The best way of finding out the exact date and time is to join the "Kimera Kolors Painting Club" Facebook group, as Kimera posts there in advance. I have a couple of questions on this (colors being so much fun to me):
- What would be a saturated dark green? (green's equivalent of midnight blue)?
- On the non-natural "bubble gum" green, what would be a possible shading color for it? (My brain doesn't compute that one.)
- Is there any other color than green that has such a "wide reach" (i.e. surviving mixing with a lot of colors)? Browns, maybe, though browns would deserve a whole episode in and of themselves, wouldn't they?
- How much of color perception (and thus naming) is impacted by the color of iris of the viewer? (Undoubtedly, culture / learning impacts naming more. ;)
A suggestion: this video being linked to color theory "in practice" (or made "feel-able"), how about showing people a way to de-saturate the color of the day with its opposite, and how you'd use it? I like using green + orange as that example. ;)
1) Basically just intense green with some black often, or even very deep blue just mixed in with a little deep brown to cut it.
2) Payne's Grey mixed with green (dark blue/black)
3) Blue has a wide space (which dips into green) and arguably Red (expeically with Crimson and Magenta in the mix)
4) A good amount honestly, but we can also talk in wavelengths to speak more objectively.

Partially unrelated, but… I take umbrage with you calling blue-greens "artificial", there are plenty of blue-greens found in nature. Turquoise and verdigris are both formed from the oxidization of minerals, through exposure to air or water. Teal is named for a color appearing on the head of a duck by the same name. Blue-greens are more of a water or air meets earth, whereas brown-greens would be soil and plants.
It was a very interesting video and would love to see more, especially on blue, violet, and purple.
It's a fair point, I was meaning only how we tend to interpret it. Most colors of course exist in nature and we just tend to see deep greens and browns as more "natural" due to prevalence. But of course, that's just sort of a generalization. Individuals and cultures can have some very different preconceptions of colors and their meanings and these things are quite fluid over time.
I do like your comparison of the air-water vs. earth water/air. That's an interesting framing for sure.

The colour of that VGC Verdigris effect paint reminds me of old '50s household appliances. Think you might be onto something with most blue-greens looking a bit artificial.

Warp stone and other radiation effects are reminiscent of bioluminescence in nature which is why we recognize the effect instantly and it feels natural

Hey Vince. Not necessarily a green question, but quite literally green adjacent: Imperial Fists and what I perceive as lime green. It seems different people have a different boundary in what they perceive as yellow, and how much cold can be added before that person begins to read the yellow as green; either by shading with blue, or more likely, with a cold grey.
I've noticed a lot of Imperial Fist armies, to my eyes at least, look lime rather than yellow, and I know I'm not alone. Equally, I tend to perceive orange as yellow until quite a lot of red has been added into the shadows. I know you should always paint your models for your own pleasure, but if you want your yellows to read as yellow to most viewers, if you're painting for competition for example, is there a more objective hue between orange and yellow and between yellow and green that you can use, that will give the most people a "yellow" experience?
I should add, I always paint my yellows over a warm beige brown zenithal, rather than cold black grey, because I want to keep control of the hue.
I think the key is to follow the 50% rule. As long as 50% plus of the space is in solidly in the middle of the spectrum, then you are going to read as yellow. You just want to avoid any blue tone underneath, which most black primers are just dark blue, so that is why it often appears a little blue.
Good idea for a series. Would love an orange focusing on Caucasian flesh, or actually would love a flesh deep dive to cover all colors of Earthling skin and especially a focus on using Warcolours flesh tones correctly (I know I’m +1ing that topic since you’ve mentioned it before).
yeah, Orange is thin in tones we recognize as orange, but has so many interesting permutations and uses. It would be a good episode. The flesh tones will be a multi-parter I suspect. :)
Im so interested in a miniature where the theme is everything is the wrong color. Toxic things are red, life is yellow or blue. Dead things are orange. Stuff like that. I wonder what it would look like if it could be pulled off well. Thank you for the excellent lesson
It could be an interesting experiement in negatives, it's a cool idea, as long as it was balanced, I would think it would work.

I understand that we are lead to believe that green is blue and yellow, but I always thought it was more cyan and magenta. This is for the greens that we think of mainly. As for the series I really like it :D I also like that you did some highlighting to show us the difference, I find it way more helpful than just saying there is a difference.
CMKY (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) is a subtractive colour model that works by filtering a broadband spectrum(white) background down into its constituent colours - used in the printing industry because we predominantly print on a white background.
This is different from the RBG colour model which Vince is using which is an additive colour model.
So your not wrong exactly but you are using a different colour model to Vince who is using an additive colour model.
Please correct me if I am wrong, I’m still fuzzy on these details.
In addition in CMKY system cyan + magenta gets you a blue. Cyan + Yellow gets you a green
Well explained and yes. I am sticking to the more traditional RBG as it's what people are familiar with, but of course, we could have a whole different discussion on CMKY and there are artists in miniature painting that swear by it.
Vince Venturella that would make an interesting video, it makes sense to go over it seeings how we are using inks over a zenithal highlighted background which is bears a lot of similarities to the printing industry. Also with lots of people now using contrast paints it’s probably as relevant as ever.
