Grooming Trails with a Tractor Landscape Rake (my first impressions)

- If you're trying to clear your land of debris, spread soil or even grade your laneway, this video may be for you. I'm trying out a landscape rake on the channel today in order to help me clear away all the debris that accumulates from the wood splitter as well as the sticks on my trails. This landscape rake with hydraulic angling control should do the trick just nicely. Glad you're all here to see my first look at this piece of equipment and give it a good first test. Here we go!

I have a rake with the gauge wheels. What I've learned is if I have the gauge wheels on I take the top link off. This allows the rake to float a little better. I then use the stop on my 3 point control to set my height. So on level ground i lower the rake until the teeth just barely contact the ground and then set the stop. If you have draft control that could work as well. To adjust the angle of the tines I use the gauge wheels to lift or lower the back in reference to the height I want to run. Setup takes a bit but I find I get much better control and dont dig in as much.
And i will say pine needles and a landscape rake suck. It clogs the rake. I've heard of removing every other tine to make it work better but that's labor intensive. They also make a pine needle rake that is designed just for those pesky leaves. I have no experience with that one though.
I have brought two pieces of equipment from them a grapple and a stump grinder having a few problems with the stump grinder but they have helped get thing up and going again thanks farmers equipment

I have used one of these without the wheels and did an OK job but the wheels makes a huge difference that did a very good job and it looks to be a very quality piece of equipment. Great video Sandy.

I’ve likely made this comment before but I like the way you take the time to provide several views of how the implement is doing what it does. Great work!
Work with the spacers. Massive practical part and/or theory in grooming your trails is managing and directing your runoff.
Don't get fixated in squaring or balancing the rake, tilting/sloping the rake is achieved in offsetting the spacers, 5 on one side, 3 on the other.
I had a 72" rake and it took about a half day to master; it turned out to be a must have tool for when my father had his larger properties.
Efficient use of our time has the same value as how wisely we use our time.

Thats a pretty sweet rake. Can you run it with less tines? Like remove every other tine for heavy duty land clearing. it's a little bit fine for fresh land work. With half of them removed you could use it as more of a root rake.
Like you said youll have to play with it to see what works best for you but it does seem like you could drop the depth wheels that last notch or uou may need to chnge the lenght of your top link to adjust the angle. It sure does a nice job and you will always move a bit of dirt till there are no sticks left. Then the dirt can fall through the tines. Thats going to be a great addition to have.
I could remove tines for sure. I may have to try that to see how it goes. I'm looking forward to getting rid of all those pesky sticks that jam up into my golf carts and equipment

Morning Sandy, Land scrape rakes are great one thing I learned if you are just moving debris try taking off every other tine to give better opening for dirt to get thru. Learning the angles to trim kinda like trim tabs on a boat to get best running of the equipment. You could use that debris to help fill in those marshy area you were talking about using the chips for Have a Great Day. Jla
Hi Jla. I like that idea about the tines. I would've not thought about it. I know what ya mean about the angles. I"m still trying to get that down. I like being able to angle from inside the. cab as I go to get around objects as well and move the debris
Gathering all that dirt all of the time does not look good to me either. Can you tell us, is the top link supposed to be rigid to force the rake down or is it supposed to flex to allow the rake to float? It seems to me like the rake should follow its own level regardless whether the front of the tractor is moving up or down.
Dry soil will flow through better but it did look like it should be dry enough. It is no good burying the sticks in the soil for a road. Okay for growing plants.
@@jakebredthauer5100 The center link can control the amount of entrance angle to a degree it also does keep the rake or blade from pushing in too much. some tractors have a spring that the center link end can push against but mainly the center link is for picking up the implement and keeping it set at the level desired. some tractors are equipped with a hydro or electric link that can be controlled from the operator seat and unless the tractor has down pressure the implement just floats. Sandys rake has adjustable wheels to control depth of cut which is a plus. Hope this helps Jla

I think you are saying that some are one-way and some are the other way. Some top links are rigid to control the height of the implement and some are variable to allow the implement to float. Thank you.
I was thinking about the implement digging too much. I am not sure but it looks like if he would raise the front of the implement, changing the angle, it would not dig so much. I doubt he wants the rake to be filling up with dirt all of the time. That means you need to dump it all of the time. It would be better to just be able to go and go.
I read a few of the comments and another guy said that he also removed every other tine to allow the dirt to flow better.

Boy, I was shocked at the first pass you made with that rake, I didn't see anything it left behind! What a dandy tool that is. And the angle feature is great for longer runs so you can pile it up one the sides and remove it later. Thanks for sharing with us. Dave
Try using a chain instead of the top link. If the tractor goes up hill, the chain will slack and not dig in but still maintain a minimum set point plus lift. Drop the wheels all the way down, then adjust chain to flat plane the rake. Use two old pins because chain is hard on them. Use 3/8" chain, loop through tractor pin and circle rake top pin with a bolt, nut and washer. Leave a little long for adjustments. I like mine for heavy debris but having trouble with it pulling too much sand when fine tuning a large flat sandy acre. I may flip it around and use in reverse tine so it won't pull so much sand(old Nevada Great Basin Lake Bed). Still learning how to use it! Good luck, it will come in handy. Mitch.

That rake works great especially on flat ground. I could see it being a problem on steep hill sides and harder to control the depth of rake. I notice you don't appear to be effected too much by all those wild fires. Last weekend we got smoked out here in northern Vermont and visibility was under 1/4 mile (.4 Km) at best for two days but has since moved through. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Sandy!
Funny you mention that. Today is incredibly smokey where I am. Seems depending on the wind the smoke either missses us completely or gets us good. It looks almost like fog outside but the smell is the give away. Thanks for coming along for the video!

I have a land scape rack for my tractor and I always wanted to try taking out every other tine to see if it would remove the branches and leaves and leave more of the dirt and gravel behind. For me I want to remove the junk and leave the dirt and gravel. I may try it and send you some pictures of the results. Thanks for the videos Sandy, I look forward to each of them.

good job and video you did very good we have a old small one. yes main adjustment is the top link it your tractor has a draft set up on the 3 point hitch you can adjust that other wise you will have to lower and lift a little by hand we used ours for rocks and roots here that what people call them. they use to make one that worked on a tractor loader hope fires are not near you smoke is really bad here today. take care, be safe and well.

Sandy, love the channel! I have a similar rake, you might try more spacers on one side (the side in center of trail). Over time you will develop and maintain a crown in your trails - if that's desirable...

Nice addition for machinery teasing time now you will have to put speed limit sign on your trail to reminde you not to go to fast there to smooth you will up that throttle ha ha ha it sure does a fantastic job and i know you will like the land plane i see people on youtube using them and they all love them one that use the land plane a lots is outdoor with the Morgans well enjoy your new toys and watch your speed on those smooth trails
hahha that's for sure! My golf carts are constantly getting sticks jammed up into the wiring and engine area so hoping this really helps. I'm looking forward to the land plane. I always thought the box blade was my only option but I think the land plane will work even better

A landscape rake is a nice bit of equipment. I have larger debris that I wanted to remove and leave soil and smaller debris so I removed every other tooth. That helped a lot. If you have a second set of hydraulic outlets on the back of your tractor adding a hydraulic top link will let adjust on the go. Really helpful as the terrain changes.

What a chain be good as a top link to allow some freedom of movement?

If the operator needs to regulate the height I don't think that would work as well as using a chain to allow the implement to regulate its own height automatically.
Whether the rake is tipped forward or tipped backward will depend on how high the three-point arms are, in my opinion.
@@jakebredthauer5100 3 points do not have down pressure (with very few exceptions, generally only on tractors that are 60+ years old). The 3 point control only functions as a limit to how low the 3 point will go. Once you let the 3 point down, if the machine encounters higher ground, the 3 point will raise up automatically. I have one of these machines and have used it on both level ground and uneven ground. I do not have a hydraulic top link and have to get off the tractor to adjust according to the size and quantity of the material I am trying to move and how hard the ground is. Do you have any experience operating a landscape rake?
That's a nice addition! I've been wanting to figure out what to use for road cleaning/maintenance and cleaning/leveling after stump removing to make a smoother base for the lawn area. These might work better than I thought.

I have heard they are useful for many different jobs. I think he should try the rake for a while to see if he still would need a land plane.

Some more seat time with it and you’ll have it figured out in no time! Looks like it piles everything nicely at the end there and was thinking that will make it easier for your root rake to come in and grab everything an move the pile / piles if needed. I don’t have any experience with one of these, but I do recall a video on “Old Guy Firewood” where he showcases using a landscape rake to gather trimmed branches. Might be worth checking out his video on that as could be some pointers there. Anyways Sandy, I’m really enjoying your channel, an I always look forward to my visit on Wednesdays an Saturdays :). I wish my landscape rake was as nice as yours.That one has nice heavy tines and the hydraulic cylinder is a really nice addition.
I've seen other brands of this landscape rake and was quite suprised with this one and how heavy built it is. Same with my MKmartin snowblower and box blade

Looks like a very well built unit for sure.. Im jealous, wish i had one to clean up all my mountain roads on my property... I usually use the box blade.. That rake looks like it would do an awesome job at prepping the soil for seeding an area with grass or putting in a feed plot..

I was thinking the same. Why not use s hydraulic toplink, that way you could adjust on the fly.
One thing I’ve found with my rake is that shortening the top link so the tines dig in less results in fewer rocks getting slingshotted like a rocket off the tines into the back of your tractor. Broken cab glass can be an expensive lesson, and fortunately one I’ve been spared so far… One downside to angling the tines so they hook less by shortening the top link - when the center pivot of the rake is no longer vertical, when changing the angle of the rake from straight across to angled, you’ll need to adjust your drop link to re-level the rake tines. Your rake may be different, but that’s how mine works.
Those spacers are designed to account for tine wear. When new they should all be at the bottom and removed as the tines wear shorter.

Nice video Sandy. I have a hydraulic top link on my tractor. Looks like that really help you out. If you have another set of remotes. Hydraulic top link is great for box blade and scrape blade. Probably be good for that as well.
I'd like one of those top links you mention for sure. I don't have another set of remotes though so would have to likely figure something out there
I’d like to suggest you get a Top and Tilt which lets you adjust height and tilt angle of your implement hydraulically from the cab. It works great with box, scrapers, landscape rakes, blades etc. it makes a huge difference when I'm working on trails and farm roads.

Nice one Sandy that is a tool I have been thinking about for a while. Watching how well it works has convinced me I need one just have to convince the boss as she holds the purse strings 🤣 I noticed that you still use a manual top link I got a hydraulic one a year ago and it makes adjusting tools like the box blade and spring tine harrow on the fly so easy would probably help with the rake

Sandy, I LIKE IT! I would say - based upon what I see, and I'm not the one operating the equipment so it's hard to evaluate in that regard.... I'd say to put all the spacers down so you're lifting the rake as high as possible for the first run. Try to scrape as much debris as possible without scratching the ground or dragging excessive amounts of dirt. Also, try experimenting with the center height of the 3-point hitch, and see if raising/angling the rake a little higher doesn't help. I LIKE the way it rakes dirt and smooths/cleans the roadway. Again, it looks 'cleaner' than using a box blade. (You're removing debris more so than grading with it). Play with it buddy... and enjoy the new toy! Christmas in June! Hahahahahaa.................

This is a groomer I can support! 😁 Was also going to mention extending the top link a bit more so the gauge wheels engage sooner. I have a lot of surface roots on my trails, did the tines tend to get caught up on those? Or maybe you don't have that problem on your trails. Also I have clay, so want to disturb the soil as little as possible while still getting the debris!
Thanks for that tip Earl. I think you're right about the top link. I didn't realize when using the landscape rake that it was not touching all the time. I find the tines break through small roots without problem and road up and over larger ones without me noticing. I'l keep you posted on the long term use of this for sure.

So from where I am out here in Oregon I would have to say that your top link is too short.
The machine should operate in a more level position fore and aft. With the tines touching just before the tail wheels touch. Thanks for asking.
Make sure to be careful not to back up the gauge wheels against a hill, I bent one of mine. Also reverse it when pushing your debris into the woods

The third point on your rake will put more lift if you can angle it back a little more to put more pressure on the rake wheels. If that makes sense 😅.I use a rear blade or sometimes called a rhino, and it has a turn buckle hooked to the upper third point, and it set the top of the blade further back or more forward, which affects the cut of the blade deeper or less deeper. 😮 It take a little figuring out. 👍.
Think I"ll have to extend that top link for sure. Bit more seat time I"m hoping I"ll get the hang of it

Talk to some farmers in the area for load of chicken manure and create a huge compost pile out of the raked wood splinters. $$$ Half for them and half for the garden.

It looked like it tilts forward a lot when grooming. The top screw adjuster may help lots. I
Sandy, it looks like you need to extend the top link out a bit. At about 9:20 and again at 9:52 you can see the rake settle on the tines rotating the gauge wheels up making them less effective at controlling the depth of cut.
After seeing the video again I think you're right Steve.
I wonder if the landscape rake would do a good job removing rocks from the yard.
If you lengthen you top link i think it will help with taking less of the layer of dirt
If you leave it in a pile it will turn into some nice soil after some time

Nice rake. Seemed to me by watching your top link is 1-2" too short. Lengthening them should drop your wheels 4-5 inches, giving you more control with the wheels.

Looks like its balancing act between the top link and wheels but also don't drop the 3pt hitch all the way. It looks like it needs to be set up just a few inches to not take as much dirt.
Sandy use your top link tilt it back do it is riding on your Guage wheels
With the wheels all the way down and then adjusting your upper link will give you the best rake effect with less dig. Kind of like a back blade. Lengthening your upper link and raising the wheels gives you a lot more dig, but that's not what you would want for what you were doing,

@@sawingwithsandy That's what I was thinking. Many times the wheels were just spinning in circles without touching the ground! When you lengthen your top link and put some pressure on those back wheels, it will be smoother and able to fill in the low spots!!
I think a top link adjustment is needed for wheels to work,also Gord Potter from GP outdoors has been at Farmers Equipment. Can you stop sending smoke this way, it crazy.

Are those TITAN implements ? Wheels on a rake are good for smoothing but are not needed for raking. I have a7 foot Woods rake,no wheels. It tilts so you can crown a driveway but it was never used for that. We smooth and rake with it. Today that rake is over $1K. Titan is Chinese so beware of quality issues. They may not be built heavy duty enuf. They are usually lower priced alternatives .Made for MK Martin...How much was that rake? Weighs 285? light.
The landscape rake is made by MK Martin. It's made in Ontario Canada. This unit has removable wheels. Yeah this is the 7' model with the optional wheel kit and optional hydraulic cylinder. Comes in around 285 lbs I believe
Hi guys, I believe the 7' is 285 lbs without the wheels or hydraulic angle kit, I would estimate around 75 - 100 lbs more for the wheel kit and hydraulic kit, so about 360-385 lbs total +/-.

Those gauge wheels weren't doing much of anything and definitely needed to be lowered some more.
I think part of your problem is your letting the 3-point down too low. Seems the rake should be close to level front to back. Your not even using the tires to gauge your just scraping.
That could be the case as well. Still learning how to operate this. Think I'll ahve to extend the top link for certain
Removing a spacer caused more dirt to be removed not less. It sounded like you wanted less dirt removed.
In this case I took the spacers from above the horizontal steep piece and put them below to increase the distance the wheel was between the ground and horizontal piece.
Sandy you had put the camera down if you go and if you look your forks should only be touching the ground when you set it all the way down it's digging into the ground you can see it you should only be at ground level not digging into the ground earache should only be touching the ground but yours you can see is setting in
