  • We examine the real faces of England's greatest kings, Edward III who was king of England from 1327 - 1377, and led England into the Hundred Years’ War with France. The descendants of his seven sons and five daughters contested and claimed the throne for generations, climaxing in the Wars of the Roses 1455-85.
In this clip we also look for the first time the face of his wife and Queen of England, Philippa of Hainault, who proved to be a good and able queen who worked tirelessly for the crown, in troubling times.
Additionally, we see the face of his eldest son and hair apparent, Edward of Woodstock also known as "The Black Prince" who was a prolific and successful medieval warrior and remains famous for his achievements even to this day.

The German language motto Ich dien -which means "I serve" was adopted by the Black Prince as the result of the battle of Crecy -it was taken from the body of king John of Bohemia who fought on the French side but was killed. The amazing thing about king John who was from the house of Luxembourg,is that he was blind and he had a sighted horseman tied to him who showed him where and how to fight. Not sure of the technical arrangements here but it must have been a pretty hard struggle for John!John's son eventually became the Holy Roman emperor Charles IV whose daughter Anne of Bohemia became the wife of king Richard II who was the son of the Black Prince.

Yes and the Vikings impression on British culture and language. Did you know the word "window" is Viking!
The Romans founded a city named it Eboracum and the first Christian Roman emperor Constantine, was elected emperor there. Later the Vikings arrived and despite their reputation were civilised, only they struggled to pronounce Eboracum and came up with Yarvik, later Anglicised to York the White Rose dynasty and different Yorks' now exist globally.

Westminster Abbey is a royal peculiar that is it's owned by the monarch.
John of Gaunt escaped the mob in 1381. Their blood was up in the Peasants Revolt and they torched his palace at the Savoy. God be thanked he was in Scotland at the time.
Since the M.A. the monarch has always been the Duke of Lancaster. As the Duke of Lancaster (as well as king) Henry VIII built a chapel and infirmary on the site of the Savoy Palace. Sadly the infirmary has gone but the Chapel at the Savoy still exists and is a royal peculiar also Beaufort children, motto "Remember we always remember" are still represented as apart from the Tudor Rose their emblem, the "portcullis" is visible throughout the Palace of Westminster and is a symbol of it. 😊

      interesting idea

    • @chocho8036
      @chocho8036 ปีที่แล้ว

@@English_Dawn interesting point about the Lancaster title...
maybe they learned their lesson that this title and the lands covering a huge swathe through the middle of England,
and huge army of retainers accompanying it makes a lord way too powerful
and this power should stay with the king
      for the sake of stability.
it was demonstrated by Edward II, father to
Edward III who had so much trouble with his first cousin,
      Thomas ,
Duke of Lancaster who was so powerful and as leader of the Opposition
and enemy to king and followers
      was basically almost untouchable
he got away with executing the king s favorite Gaveston,
      without a trial
and lived ona full decade after
      despite the king swearing vengeance
This was a point of tremendous despair on the part of Edward II
      that even as king,
he could not punish Lancaster for what he considered the worst wrong committed to himself
      by anyone
that I believe it brought his reign down
by putting him in the clutches of the unscrupulous Despenser family
who were one of the few who stuck loyally to him
with the power and willingness to help punish Lancaster
      War of Roses,
      generations later
is of course another example of the unwieldy power of the Lancasters
      who competed for the throne
even though descended from the 3rd surviving son of Edward III,
      John of Gaunt,
who owned over thirty castles by the age of 22
The Yorkists needed the property and moneys combined of their own house
and that of the Mortimers to defeat the
      Lancaster House

Her jewelry taken without leave and given to De Spenser to swan about with. Once she had produced an heir she could live comfortably but without much in the way of Love until Mortimer. She got her son out of England and safely to France where she could exert some political pressure. Here is to a woman who would stand for a humiliating marriage.

I've read an awful lot about the Plantagenet dynasty and I have found that Alice was well liked by most who knew her, including some of the Kings legitimate children, and most of the Barons. Her son John supported his nephew Richard II. Someone who didn't like her, or the influence she had over Edward was John of Gaunt. He was bitter with her and resented her sons support for Richard over His own son Henry Bollinbroke. History regards her as greedy because she was gifted much of Philippas jewellery. But, it was gifted to her by the most powerful man in Europe, probably the world. She didn't steal it and there's no evidence that she asked for it

Actually unmarried girls did not hide their hair and brides appeared with unbound hair. Only after marriage did women hide their hair. This persisted through the Tudor period.

Edward III disinherited a very important person,
    his granddaughter Philippa,
indeed named after his own wife
and only child to his second son Lionel who died aged about 30
Edward III disinherited from the Crown Philippa and her progeny
which also contributed to the War of the Roses
Legally the disinheritance does not necessarily hold up
but it had a profound effect in family and politics
and caused her progeny to be mistreated by the children of the other sons, House of Lancaster
    when they came to power
    overlooked for important titles
her male heirs closely watched over almost resembling house arrest
    due to their superior claim,
and her granddaughters Anne and Eleanor severely neglected impoverished despite their wealthy and royal background.
    from this situation,
Anne married into the powerful House of York,
progeny do 4th surviving sone of Edward III
bringing her inherited superior claim to crown
and the rest is history .
    Shocking treatment of Philippa
    Edward III to his granddaughter,
    in my humble opinion

I think the young Edward III looks like our beautiful Prince William. And strangely, Phillipa of Hainault looks much like lovely Catherine, Princess of Wales. Are they reincarnated?

is it any wonder that the product of so much conflict with the reign of his father and interesting relationship between his parents with his fathers special favorites, went onto cause generations of conflict by his own policies with his children and grandchildren ?
although he is known as one of the greatest kings of england,
his policy of fearfully delaying marriages and therefore family and heir making of his two oldest children
Edward the Black Prince and a daughter
until they were well in their thirties,
which is unheard of in that era
caused this huge competitive generation as his other grandchildren were the same age as The Black Princes heir
even though the Black Prince was much older
and it is preferable in royal politics that the next heir is also older than cousins next in line
this combined with the policy of breeding and encouraging entirely ambitious progeny
expecting all sons to be kings in their own right,
second surviving son of Edward III, Lionel was supposed to be king of ireland and scotland
Third surviving John of Gaunt supposedly Duke of independent Brittany
    etc etc.
when this empire and little king ships did not fully come about
    especially in 1360's
as empire planned by Edward III was waning and failing,
the pieces of pie left over were too small
so the focus was on England for the surviving son John of
    Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster
and Edmund of Langley, Duke of York
no other king befire him promoted his sons to the elevated rank of Duke
    in the past,
    all were simply Earls,
    and
were encouraged to focus on supporting the eldest heir

Both Edward iii of England and his son the Black Prince committed countless war crimes in France and brought decades of abject misery to both countries. Ultimately the early 'gains' in the hundred years war ( eg after the battle of Crecy) were for nothing as the French were very successful later in the war. In the end, after several generations of massive suffering triggered by Edward iii starting the hundred years war, it all ended in 1453 with a complete French victory. Henry V 'victory' at Agincourt in 1415 led to nowhere. It is odd that so many English historians cheer on Edward and Henry's wars, with their huge loss of life and a vast waste of taxes and resources.

The sickness and eventual death of his illustrious son who he wanted dearly to have succeed him, the Black Prince, took a bad toll on him. You see his eldest son have been with him since he was a young teenage father through many a adventure and battles, the boy himself growing into a fearsome warrior learning from his father and other fighting nobles.
