Wow, that over-one-minute intro is just terrible. I've literally never seen a TH-cam channel think a one minute intro filled with horrendous country music, still images and random shots of trees is a good idea. This guy MUST be another poorly educated Republican.
@Wayne Clark Dear sir/madam/horse, I'm sorry you're dissatisfied with your TheGunPenguin experience. Please follow these easy steps to fix the problem: 1. Watch something else. 2. Follow step 1 again. 3. Blow me. If you find that your irritation persists, mostly because you're the sort of dumb troglodyte who bought an Infidel, please repeat step 3 until you're satisfied. In Satan, TheGunPenguin
@@WayneClark the infidel has a rather weak spring compared to most microtechs and the tracks on the button are the perfect spot for debris to get in and jam the knife
You're so thoughtful and considerate in sharing your Microtechs. The sincerity of your courteousy, being really funny, and bending over backwards in accommodating the viewer making sure you didn't cheat us of any Info we'd need to make our Microtech choices is world class. Buying a Bentley might feel similar. Your favorite Microtech is the last one you handled. I'm going to sip some JD Single Barrel and continue watching.
Received my bronze finish version of the Delta yesterday and it's typical Microtech build and function quality. I like the oversized button - and maybe that's the reason for the design. A larger button, seems to be a bit longer firing throw, with less stacking just before the blade lock releases. Definitely glad I ponied up the extra $30 for the bronze look because it really makes the knife look more expensive. The Delta came in just under $400 from BladeOps, and about $140 from the least expensive Combat Troodon - when they have them in stock. I measured the blade at exactly 3.7" which is a hair shorter than the CT, and around 2/10th of an inch shorter than the Infidel, though the Infidel blade begins its taper right from the hilt whereas the Delta has a slightly wider span and maintains it out to about 2/3rds of the blade length then sweeps in to the razor tip.
Hey I literally just ordered a Microtech Dirac Delta from PVK.Vegas! They were the only company online with them in stock. I grabbed one for $356 shipped. I cannot wait to get it. I watched your video late last night, and I ordered mine today! This review helped me a lot. I am a grounds maintenance supervisor, so I am using this one at work along with my Spyderco PM2. I really wanted a Combat Troodon, but I couldn’t afford the $485-$520+ cost to get one. It ultimately came down to a Ultratech tanto DLC blade W/ Copper top handle , or this Dirac Delta. I ultimately decided the larger 3.79” Delta blade would be better for my usage.
Stephanie, you've got awesome taste! And $356 is incredible! I think you're going to love the knife, and I'm very glad the review helped. I almost bought the copper-top Ultratech too, still might actually, but I think you'll enjoy the Dirac Delta more, because it looks and feels more like one of the big, super high-end MTs, only it's priced more reasonably. And really, the Delta does damn near everything the Combat Troodon does. In actual use, there's probably no functional difference between the two. Did you get one of the proof one Dirac Deltas? They're worth some money on eBay these days! Also, do you intend to carry the Dirac Delta for defense, and the Spyderco for tool use?
Best Dirac Delta review on YT. Thanks for putting out goddamn solid content - been binging your Microtech vids. Question about stiffness of retraction: I saw a teardown vid that said a little rem oil around the switch makes the action less stiff on all Microtechs, and some other YT reviewers seem to have easier switches than yours. If I get a stiff switch, can I fix it like that?
Thank you for the kind words, and I very much appreciate you watching. I can't say that oil has helped any of my Microtechs to be less stiff, but this is also the only one that I've actually found to be stiff. My others, and I have more than a few, all feel fantastic. After some use, the Dirac Delta smoothed out, and now feels comparably to my other knives. But Christ, when I first got that thing, it felt like it required, no shit, four times more force to open and close it than any other Microtech model. I developed a huge callous on my thumb from working it. But, after some time, it worked itself out.
I love Microtech Knives and have a bunch of them but recently I got a great deal on a benchmade infidel and is not as bad as you claim at least I don’t think so. Has nice trigger and ergo is great in the hand, I believe everyone should try it and come up with their own opinion.
If you like it, that's the only thing that matters. I'm here to offer my opinion, and the comments are open for other folks to offer their own. No internet jackoff's opinion should be trusted over personal experience, including mine.
It's a beautiful knife, but I'm curious about the where the trigger is placed. (I can't imagine stabbing with it and putting stress on that trigger.) Have the company developed stress test on that trigger and pounds of resistance on that blade before collapse?
Are you asking how many pounds of force are required to close the knife? I dunno, maybe 10-15? It's a switch that opens and closes the knife; it can't require much force than that and be operable by human hands. If you're asking how much force is require to break the knife, I suggest you look up some of the Microtech stress testing. These are very sturdy.
@@yharnamiyhill787 Microtechs makes the most durable OTFs, for sure. However, one ought to be aware that all OTFs are inherently weaker than folders of equal quality and fixed blade knives. This blade shape is best for defense. If you're planning to actually cut stuff with the knife, or use the blade in a a way that might require durability, this isn't the right knife for you. But it'll survive some crazy shit that you wouldn't expect an otf to survive, like getting hammered into a board.
15:06 "so, you want it to be hard if your gunna keep it open if your doing something difficult with it where your hand is under a lot of pressure, it's great" yeah, Thats what she said (i never point that stuff out but on this one i felt like it was essential)
@@lexusrc3507 Definitely. Every OTF spring breaks eventually -- they can only be fired a finite number of times. My concern with an OTF manufacturer is how they handle the inevitable breakage, and Microtech is always polite and eager to fix the problem, if you can even call it a problem. They've got the best customer service in the industry. When I'm reviewing guns, I like to give numbers, and I don't have hard data on this, so I'm reticent to speculate. But, in my experience, my Microtech springs last longer than those in other OTFs I've owned, to the point that I mostly buy MT these days.
@@lexusrc3507 Happy to help. I oil my HALO VI and LUDT, but none of the others. Those two have to be oiled because the springs don't have to replaced as often, and the oil dries out. My double-action OTFs are used heavily, and have to visit the factory for a sharpening/new springs, and the oil they apply there is plenty. I don't mean to make it sound as though you'll need new springs all the time. The ones I don't carry almost never need new springs, while the ones that I open and close 50 times in a day have to be serviced regularly.
@@thegunpenguin Going good, thanks for asking! I should be hearing soon if I get accepted into the Marines or not. I had to apply for a medical waiver, so that delayed the process a good bit, lol. I'm really liking these new videos. I'm watching the Geissele SD-E review right now, it's very informative.
@@thegunpenguin Unfortunately, I got denied due to a stutter I have. I can get new paperwork and reapply though, so I'm still trying. But I think I'm gonna start looking into other branches as a plan B.
@thegunpenguin do experience any spring twang with your Dirac? I just picked up a sweet tan one , but it has some intermittent spring twang upon firing/retracting
Some OTFs make a twanging sound, some don't. It's nothing to worry about. And if something does ever go wrong, in my experience, Microtech has the best customer service in the industry.
@@JayDawgVader nope, bought from a reputable dealer, and I have heard from other Dirac delta owners that some of theirs have been doing the same thing. Google microtech spring sing. Its a well known thing.
@@ddcycleman Yeah, I love my Microtech Dirac Delta but they have issues like many manufacturers. Do not let this video fool you IMO. Seems corporate based way to much. The Benchmade Infidel is just as good or better IMO. I own both and love both but I would not say the Microtech is better. It is on par with the Infidel, but the Benchmade Infidel is a KILLER knife IMO. Just go with your gut IMO if you can only buy one. I think they both are great but IMO the Mircotech is not superior. The Benchmade Infidel is just as good and, like I said, I own both.
Love your video’s! I have two combat troodon’s. Both d/e daggers. Was thinking of getting a halo 6 with hellhound blade, is hell hound more like a utility? Was hoping it’s more self defense!
Thanks for the kind words! I think you can really use most Microtechs for any purpose, some blades just favor one use. The only one that really isn't versatile is the D/E. The Hellhound favors utility, but would certainly be very useful for defense. That blade is really more an aesthetic choice than a functional one. I hope this helps!
5 ปีที่แล้ว
Have you actually messed with a hellhound blade? I bought an ultratech hellhound as it seemed cool online but I honestly never touch it now. Just a unique and rather odd blade design that initially seemed cool but didnt age well at all, my opinion of course.
@ It's not really my favorite either. When I say it favors aesthetics over all else, I mean it. Most of the time, I find the shape rather tacky. Like you said, it didn't age well. That's really the best description of that blade.
About the same as any high-quality OTF -- some, but not a lot. Plenty to allow the knife to function reliably, but not enough that it won't function reliably.
If you had to pick one...Microtech Dirac (or Dirac Delta) or Benchmade Mini Infidel (or Benchmade Infidel)? And why? As for which size, I’m leaning towards the larger Delta or Infidel based on my current knife collection. Thoughts? I have a Protech Magic Whiskers, Microtech UTX-85 and Guardian Tactical RECON-035. I love the smooth easy and smooth action of the RECON-035! Easier and smoother than the UTX-85.
Between those two, that's a tough choice. In many ways, they are tough to compare. The Delta is more like the Combat Troodon or Cypher. But, I'd probably choose the Ultratech -- I prefer the top-mounted button that much.
There's not really a big difference. I much prefer the button placement on the Combat Troodon, and find it be the better knife for my tastes, but it's also larger and heavier. The Dirac Delta is probably a better deal. It's really going to come down to personal taste. Whichever knife you choose, you win.
@@thegunpenguin I got the Dirac today, its a cool knife. I think that it seems like its harder to retract the blade because when you do so, your pulling on the firing button. When your firing it, your digging in and pushing it out. Its a matter of leverage. Its got a strong spring like the Combat Troodon. When that baby fires, it really kicks. Just to mention, I also received a Piranha Excalibur today too. Its built like a little tank. Its the second one I have. I beat the crap out of the first one and it still works great! Just looks battle worn.
@@ald.5147 You're right, that's probably not helping. After reading this, I'm also thinking that mine might've been abnormally stiff at first. Though it evened out, and felt pretty normal after a few weeks, it was literally 4x harder to retract the blade than my Combat Troodon. I don't consider my CT to be stiff, but I also only have the one to test. How would you compare the build quality of the Piranha to the Microtech? I've never seen the Excalibur in person.
@@thegunpenguin The Excalibur is different, but a very well made piece. Ive had one for 6 yrs and flicked it in an DC out probably thousands of times. Hacked up boxes, Garden hose, carpet, you name it. Not the easiest blade to sharpen because its a very hard steel. The "flickability" factor is great. The Excalibur makes you want to just sit there and flick it and Can't put it down. The little catches that go on each end of the spring needed replacing so I called Piranha and the guy said send it in and they will fix it for free. He said, "a smile and a hand shake" how nice is that! They are not cheap though. I bought a second one the other day from PVK vegas. I paid $380 for it. They always seem to have hard to find ones in stock.
@@ald.5147 Thanks for the info! They sound like damn fine knives. I may have to add one to the list. $380 isn't awful for a great OTF with awesome customer service backing it. For a company like that, using premium materials, I don't consider that too crazy. Don't get me wrong, it sure as hell ain't cheap either, but you know what I mean.
Something about this one kept me away. Might’ve been the front switch or maybe it was the symmetry, it doesn’t matter. I had a change of heart and now I have one on the way (apocalyptic). This happens a lot since I got the damn Microtech bug.
BM in my mind will always equivocate Bowel movement, which is an awesome way to politely refer to taking a shit. Am I saying that benchmade is shit, yes because it's my opinion and I revel in that. I have owned some, I even liked the bugout, somewhat,,but microtech is special and not just the otf models the ludt is badass too. That's not an opinion that is fact. Southern edges is the best I agree, I love doing business with Mike and will buy as much as I can from him. Great video and comments, you nailed my trepidation with paramilitary police as well, I'm a descendant of unruly people, like them I love liberty. Keep up the good work.
Microtech is using Crucible XHP for some knives these days, to keep up with demand. You'll see Elmax, M390, 204P, and XHP leaving the factory. Those are all extremely awesome super steels, with little difference between them. However, M390 and 204P hold and edge slightly longer, and are my preference. XHP is an awesome steel.
@@AuntyMabele None of these are better or worse than one another, just different, for different tastes and applications; that's why I own or have owned several of each in most cases. I can definitively tell you that quality is identical across them all, in the same way that the Ultratech is of equal quality to the larger ones -- it's just smaller. The Dirac Delta is the smallest of the large Microtech OTFs. The only real difference is that it has a symmetrical design and a side button. The others are asymmetrical and have a top button. If you prefer the top button, buy the Cypher or CT. If you like it on the side, buy the Dirac Delta. I find the Cypher most visually appealing, while the CT feels best in the hand. It doesn't really matter what you choose, outside of personal taste.
@@AuntyMabele It is noticeably thinner in the handle. Though, the blade is also thinner as well. The Dirac Delta weighs considerably less, with a smoother body.
Good video, other than I have to wonder what "hard use" uses a grip like that besides stabbing someone in the kidney, or buttering the world's most aggressive slice of bread.
Sometimes you have to cut a really tough piece of string off your shirt. For most of us, myself certainly included, no knife will ever do anything remotely serious, and I'd wager that most, if not all the shit that I say in any video is a joke.
You seem like you know microtech well. How this black coating - paint will age if this is light use or no use knife. Same thing do you know about bronze coating they use on same blades
The Microtech coating is far more durable than those from most other brands. I say most because I haven't owned and used every knife on the planet; something might be better. My SOCOM is an excellent example. That knife is used every day, and sure, you can tell, but it's pretty far from wrecked and will last until the day I die. The hardware gets nicked and dinged with use like any knife, but Microtech's anodizing on the handle is very good, and they use a durable coating on the hardware. Ultimately, Microtechs, despite being designed with aesthetics in mind, are meant to be used. Hope that helps!
I find it very weird that the larger knife is called the Dirac Delta. The mathematical function is meant to be infinintley thin, hence I'd imagine it would be the smaller.
I ordered both Dirac and delta and they are absolutely smooth this might be an issue our i just got 2020 version so smooth. But price wise i bought the full serrated and it is beautiful and pricey. The only reason i bought the delta is because how amazing the dirac was and version i found is unbelievable. Also they upgraded my delta clip to titanium but that's because of price maybe all in all incredible knife.
Are you referring to how stiff the button on my proof run model was? It was undoubtedly a problem with the early ones only. As you note, the 2020s require substantially less pressure to retract.
Arguably, that's a feature. Microtech makes it so that you can't accidentally close the knife when it's in use. Or at least, you can't do it easily. I'd prefer that to be a little stiff. Mine are all very smooth, though.
@@Adamas11 That's fair! I've got a fairly substantial Microtech collection, and that's mostly because I like the blade designs and the way the actions feel. They're excellent!
I’ve considered the Dirac, just not sold on the design yet. I have the UTX-85. I like it, but prefer the Troodon design from an ergonomic standpoint. Not sure if it makes sense to purchase the regular Troodon since I have the UTX-85 They are similar in sizes. I wouldn’t mind a larger knife though, like the Combat Troodon. It’s a beast and much more expensive though. Thoughts?
Great review. I thought I was the only one who thought the infidel was the ugliest piece of trash in the entire knife market. I seriously don't understand why anyone would pay north of $400 for that knife.
Thanks! I don't understand it either. The Infidel is tremendously overrated, with so many great options of the market. Tighe, Microtech, Heretic, the list is long. Thanks for watching!
Choosing to carry the benchmade may be an availability thing too. It's nearly impossible to find a combat troodon in stock on most websites and god help you if you want a tanto or hellhound
This video nudged me away from picking up a Benchmade OTF and convinced me to get this model instead. I was surprised at how difficult it was to find one online but I suppose that's because it's such a popular knife.
Glad to hear it! You'll be much happier with the Dirac Delta. And you're absolutely right: the popularity of the DD is exactly why you can't find one. Microtechs sell as fast as they can make them. Reach out to Mike at Southern Edges and ask him if he has any Deltas, or if he knows when he might get more. Tell him I sent you.
@@thegunpenguin funny you said that cause that's the exact dealer I purchased it from. Picked up the last one he had in stock. Thanks for the content, keep up the great work!
The Cypher is certainly out of production, but I can find no evidence that the Dirac Delta is gone. To the contrary, I hear they will produce more, when Microtech resumes building knives, if they haven't already.
@@davismathis845 That's why I purchased two such Cyphers. Though you might not like the Dirac Delta quite as much, they'll make new ones very soon, or you could wait for a Combat Troodon. My CT is excellent.
Been a while since your last video I was feeling for something shiity lol. Since watching your knife reviews other knife reviews have been popping up on my recommended videos. Particularly this vespa brand. I guess they're Chinese replicas of michrotech from what I understand. What are your thoughts on them?
This is the place for shitty, that's for sure! I'm not fond of any of the knock-offs. Vespa at least tries to make them look a little bit different, but still, it's worth spending the extra money for the real thing. With Vespa you have no way to truly know what materials they're using, regardless of what they might say. There's also no way that Vespa can copy Microtech's tolerances. But all of that is secondary to the two biggest problems, for me personally. One is practical, the other is ideological. OTFs can only be fired a finite number of times. When one of my Microtechs needs fixing, it goes in the mail and I get it back, good as new in a week or two. And, they sharpen and oil it. Microtechs also have abnormally fantastic parts longevity, stemming from those tolerances and materials. With the Vespa, the inevitable service that knife requires will be very hard to obtain, and even harder to get for free. For me, that's a deal breaker. My second bigger issue is that Microtech spends an insane amount of time and money on R&D, and then these Chinese companies steal Tony's patented work. I find China's lack of concern for intellectual property disgusting, and it has irreparably harmed our economy. Anyhow, these are just the opinions of some jackoff making TH-cam videos, and probably don't don't count for much. Or, let's be honest, my opinions DEFINITELY don't count for much. But I'm your number-one source for horse dick jokes!
@@thegunpenguin I agree the one thing that would bother me Is the warranty issue. Seems like once you get a vespa theres no turning back you're stuck with it. With no help if shit goes wrong with it. I definitely want to get the cypher one day I just have to push myself. When I have the money I just have to say to myself I have enough ammo I have enough gun accessories!
@@magicd5780 And the only serious downside to OTFs is that, shit eventually goes wrong. I should say, a part eventually wears out. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the knife, but a few of the parts, like the firing spring, are essentially disposable. If you're looking for a Cypher, the Dirac Delta might be the way to go. The Cyphers are pretty much gone, and they won't be making more, other than Marfione Customs. And it sucks. The Cypher is my favorite knife, ever. By far.
@@thegunpenguin I'm actually looking on your boys site right now southern edges. I really like that cypher though. That sucks they're not making the cypher seems very popular wierd?
@@magicd5780 Microtech is really good about keeping parts on hand. Don't quote on this, but I would think they'd go as far as to make a new part for an old design. They're not going to let something break permanently, especially a high-end model like that. In my experience, they have ludicrously good customer service. I agree, I'm not sure why they discontinued it so soon, but they do that a lot, to build the demand for a model. The folks who collect Microtechs love them for it, myself included, except that I want to buy more Cyphers, and I can't.
I'm not over it either. I know folks are probably sick to death of me talking about it, but it bothered me. And it bothers me that we handle confiscated guns that way at all. Anyhow, thanks for watching, and I'm glad to see that other folks are still pissed off about this.
Illini Armory They also made the majority of their political donations to anti-gun Democrats in their home state of Oregon in order to benefit their business. I ask out of pure ignorance... Not a jab... Dont all police depts have confiscated weapons destroyed by someone? I guess they could be recirculated but... Do we want to buy a used firearm used in a crime? Dont they keep a federal database on these guns? And wouldn't your lawyer want you to avoid buying them for that reason? Just asking why we care if a knife company cut up some guns that were gonna be destroyed anyway. To clarify: I stopped buying Levi's cuz they contribute to anti 2nd Amend. groups. I'm just missing a couple details on this one, I think. Little help? No soapboxes please.
@@lindenarden667 I don't think that's an unfair question at all, to the point that I may tackle that in a future knife video. I can't speak for why that bothered other people, only why it bothered me, so take my thoughts with the usual grain of salt. I don't like the role that police play in our society. Most of the cops that I've talked to, the vast majority, in fact, who aren't actively involved in the gun community, want gun control and reduction of our 2A rights. For me, the destruction of the guns came to represent the sort of weird unconditional support folks show for the cops, and it also functions as tacit agreement that the guns needed to be destroyed. Or else Benchmade could've declined. Prior to the covid apocalypse, I worked in a workshop, building and working on guitars, and if the cops had shown up asking me to cut up a Santa sack full of guns, I would've declined on principle, and likely told them to politely fuck off. Benchmade didn't do that. Instead, Benchmade performed an action that serves to support the present way that law enforcement is carried out. Cops aren't bad, and law enforcement isn't bad, inherently. There are lots of great cops. But many police departments no longer function as civilian organizations, instead feeling more like paramilitary extensions of government. Anyhow, that's why I was bothered by it. Keep in mind that I'm a goddamn idiot, and my opinion isn't the most valuable. And also, for the record, this isn't really the reason I dislike the Benchmade OTFs. Instead, I don't like them because they're janky and cheap with lazy design. Benchmade's other offerings, especially their folders, are exceptionally nice.
@@thegunpenguin I take your point. And I see your arguement. Might make my question sound a little lazy or complacent. Agree with your principal and opinion on BM folders vs OTF. @@lindenarden667 I appreciate you too, my friend, and your question didn't seem lazy at all -- it's a completely fair thing to ask. This was a case where I also had to sort of internally ask, "Why am I angry about this?" It didn't feel right, and that's when it dawned on me that it's emblematic of a deeper issue. Like you, I played for a living for the whole of my adult life. About 7-8 years ago, it morphed into session work, and I built a career producing records for other folks. I do the repair stuff during the day, because I get bored, and then in the late afternoon into the night, I do production and session. I'm the sort that likes to stay busy, and I didn't like that downtime early in the day, waiting for the recording to start. Knew it was time to learn a trade that I'd enjoy to fill the time, and I LOVE doing it. It's been about 4 years, and I like it as much as the session work. In my opinion, Larrivee does the best poly finishes ever, and made my rethink my lacquer snobbery. Are you still playing for a living?
I once bought an Infidel. After 2 days, I decided to test it by stabbing about 3" of corrugated cardboard. The blade jammed partially and stuck halfway out and I couldnt move it. I sent it back and got my money back.
Botton on flat side makes this knife ambidextrous. I bought both models to carry on my left side in case someone grabs my right hand with my gun. Or just to have a knife on both sides of me so either has access. Cannot use my Microtechs in my left hand pocket very easily.
I consider the ambidextrosity (that's definitely not a word) to be one of the Dirac's prime features. I'm sure one can learn to use the other models southpaw, but it doesn't feel quite as good when the blade is facing the inside of the handle and the pocket clip is eating your palm, I'd wager. Hopefully this'll be a popular model -- the proof run for damn sure sold out in a hurry.
So I've been planning on buying an infidel tomorrow UNTIL I found your videos trashing them. Are they really that shitty or is it just a personal preference thing and the corny name? I don't have the extra 100+ for a c troodon right now (I can barely afford the $380 sale price of the infidel I found) so I was gonna settle. Would you sincerely advise against it?
I sincerely advise against them. But don't take my word for it -- is there any way you can handle one alongside a Microtech before you make the purchase? If the Infidels were $100, you wouldn't hear me complaining, but at present prices, they are a terrible bargain. It's hard for me to describe how durable the Microtechs are. Take a look at a few of the torture tests on TH-cam.
This guy is right. I used to have a Benchmade infidel before I switched to microtech. The Benchmade would dull its self when extending the blade because the sides would dig into the handle. Also, if you held the infidel upside down the knife didn't have enough spring power to retract the blade against gravity and would fail.
I bought an INFIDEL and tested it by stabbing into 3" of corrugated cardboard. The blade got pushed half way onto the handle and jammed solid. Couldn't budge it. So, I sent it back and got my money back and will never look back at that piece of crap ag
@@thegunpenguin Brother, you have attracted quite a few brain dead millenials commenting on this video. Someone should direct them to their safe space.
Don't try this at home...It's awful you even have to say that, but you know some dumbass would try it and would somehow slip and put the knife through their face. Then they'd probably try to sue you over it. If they aren't dead. Also, I came for the Dirac, but I may end up getting a Cypher instead. Southern Edges has one and I really like the size for my needs a bit better. I also like the side button. It seems like it would have less of a chance of accidentally deploying while carrying it.
Haha! You're quite right. As for the Cypher, please buy up one of those last few Mike has. They are so nice. It's a damn shame the Cypher has been discontinued; that's my favorite Microtech of all time. Tell him I sent you.
Haha! Microtechs definitely sting the wallet. Sometimes I'll have this moment where I think, "I have a $500 hunk of metal in my pocket. I'm a moron." Then I actually use the knife, and I realize it was worth it. No one makes a better auto than Microtech, and they are very, very sturdy -- about as sturdy as an auto can be. And you've got maybe the best defensive blade shape ever. One of those alongside your Spydercos, and you may never need another knife. Though, I can almost guarantee you're going to WANT another Microtech. Also, it's so cool that you're going to carry one of the proof run models! I'm doing the same. Most folks are hiding them in their gun safes for later to sell. I still can't believe that MT is selling these for $360 or so; after the Cypher, it feels like a steal.
I love Microtech knives but your comments on Benchmade are ridiculous IMO. I own a Microtech Dirac Delta in OD distressed green. I truely love it but Benchmade makes some very great knives too though! You might hate Benchmade but they make kiiler knives, just like Microtech.
@@thegunpenguin Yeah, I don't see a huge difference between the two other than designs. Both are top when it comes to performance. Some I like better in design with Mircrotech and some better in Benchmade. As far as function, quality and performance, I think they are on par though. Hence to say Microtech only created the Dirac model because Benchmade FIRST created the Infidel. Pretty safe to say that Microtech copied Benchmade with the button position on this model just to compete, as you stated in your video! So who is really the creating the new models and who is copying?
@@JB54379 I respect your opinion, however much I might disagree. I've handled several Benchmades that were very, very well-made. The OTFs aren't among them. Thanks for taking the time to weigh in, and all opinions are welcome here. That's a good question, who is creating new models? Absolutely fucking nobody, that's who. In a general sense everything has been done. Microtech's internals and aesthetics are always cutting-edge, but the broad strokes have long been painted. There are two places to put the button. A company offers a feature that people like, and the next one does the same to increase sales. Then the roles reverse. Hopefully the knife industry will always work that way. Like it or not, Microtech has defined the modern OTF industry, building what we think of as a modern DA OTF. Then Benchmade added to the industry, Microtech released a model to cut into their market segment, and the circle continued. Hopefully that clears things up. Enjoy your Benchmades and your Microtechs -- it's not for me to tell you what you like. All I can do is share my own opinion.
@@thegunpenguin Don't get me wrong, I like the look of the Dirac, but Microtech is no stranger to "borrowing " other companies' designs. As for the Zulu Spear , all reviews look extremely positive.

Thank you for the kind words!
I just recently purchased the Dirac Delta, i got the stonewashed blade with full serration, i absolutely love this knife, it is my EDC!
Subbed, just for the Benchmade jabs.
I got mine from PVK too.
Thanks for the info, I have been looking for a while for a dealer. PVK.Vegas it is.
Good review. I’m sold.
Thank you, my friend! It's a great knife, and will surely be a big seller for MT.
Great review brother. Your spot on when you say microtech knives are far superior to Benchmade!

Thank you, my friend!
Had an MT Dirac Delta. Still have the BM Infidel. Get it?
Why you say to microtek is superior to the Benchmade? Other than the parish
That knife is perfect. I think a tanto would also be pretty kick ass.
It's a beautiful knife, but I'm curious about the where the trigger is placed. (I can't imagine stabbing with it and putting stress on that trigger.)
Have the company developed stress test on that trigger and pounds of resistance on that blade before collapse?
Are you asking how many pounds of force are required to close the knife? I dunno, maybe 10-15? It's a switch that opens and closes the knife; it can't require much force than that and be operable by human hands.
If you're asking how much force is require to break the knife, I suggest you look up some of the Microtech stress testing. These are very sturdy.
@@thegunpenguin Ah. So they do have stress tests. Thank you! I want to get a knife that is concealed and durable.
Why are these hard to find?

How does the s 30 steel compared to the steel you talking about?

Yes, it's far superior.
thegunpenguin have you ever had a spring break on a microtech?
@@lexusrc3507 Definitely. Every OTF spring breaks eventually -- they can only be fired a finite number of times. My concern with an OTF manufacturer is how they handle the inevitable breakage, and Microtech is always polite and eager to fix the problem, if you can even call it a problem. They've got the best customer service in the industry. When I'm reviewing guns, I like to give numbers, and I don't have hard data on this, so I'm reticent to speculate. But, in my experience, my Microtech springs last longer than those in other OTFs I've owned, to the point that I mostly buy MT these days.
thegunpenguin thanks. Do you ever oil them? Many on the forums swear by running microtechs dry as long as they are clean.

Weird comment, but you have a likeable voice. I really enjoyed the review! You have a new subscriber.
Nice review. Just ordered one of these with the Damascus steel. Shocking how hard these Dirac Deltas are to find online.
Still hard to find for some reason.
How is the blade play? Side to side, in and out.
If you watched the video, you know my thoughts on Benchmade OTFs.
thegunpenguin Yep, watched it again 👍 the Dirac Delta is an amazing value play too 😉
Which one would you chose if you only could have one delta or ultratech
Between those two, that's a tough choice. In many ways, they are tough to compare. The Delta is more like the Combat Troodon or Cypher. But, I'd probably choose the Ultratech -- I prefer the top-mounted button that much.
Thanks
Compare dirac to combat T. Which one fires stronger. Is there a difference ?
There's not really a big difference. I much prefer the button placement on the Combat Troodon, and find it be the better knife for my tastes, but it's also larger and heavier. The Dirac Delta is probably a better deal. It's really going to come down to personal taste. Whichever knife you choose, you win.
I love my Dirac!

Thanks to you, I bought one and I'm $380 poorer.
My apologies! Let us all know how you like it.

I got the Dirac today, its a cool knife.
@@ald.5147 Thanks for the info! They sound like damn fine knives. I may have to add one to the list. $380 isn't awful for a great OTF with awesome customer service backing it. Something about this one kept me away. Might’ve been the front switch or maybe it was the symmetry, it doesn’t matter. I had a change of heart and now I have one on the way (apocalyptic). This happens a lot since I got the damn Microtech bug.

I just received a Dirac with XHT steel is that normal?
Microtech is using Crucible XHP for some knives these days, to keep up with demand. You'll see Elmax, M390, 204P, and XHP leaving the factory. Those are all extremely awesome super steels, with little difference between them. However, M390 and 204P hold and edge slightly longer, and are my preference. XHP is an awesome steel.

Is this better than the Cypher and Combat Troodon? I'm on verge of purchasing lol
Or at least how does it compare?
@@thegunpenguin Thank you for your help! In the hand does the Dirac Delta feel noticeably smaller than the Combat Troodon?

Good video, other than I have to wonder what "hard use" uses a grip like that besides stabbing someone in the kidney, or buttering the world's most aggressive slice of bread.
Sometimes you have to cut a really tough piece of string off your shirt. For most of us, myself certainly included, no knife will ever do anything remotely serious, and I'd wager that most, if not all the shit that I say in any video is a joke.
Do you think this is as as strong as an ultratech or troodon?
I think so! It hasn't been on the market long enough to really know for certain, but I've yet to own a Microtech that wasn't durable in the long run.
Enjoyed Your review and totally share Your views on Microtech knives vs the Infidel. Subscribed!
Thank you for the kind words! It's always a pleasure to meet a Microtech fan.
It this much harder to close than a UTX-85? I find the UTX-85 a little tough to close. Not a bitch to close, but not as easy/smooth as I’d like it.
Arguably, that's a feature. Microtech makes it so that you can't accidentally close the knife when it's in use. Or at least, you can't do it easily. I'd prefer that to be a little stiff. Mine are all very smooth, though.
Okay, this makes sense. Smooth operation is definitely important though.

The Dirac Delta is very large, while the Ultratech is much slimmer. And your choice might also depend on whether you prefer top or side buttons.

Nice review . I own both the benchmade and the microtech. I like them both but I’m a bit partial towards the microtech (ultra tech ).

I’m still not over benchmade cutting up guns and the police posting it........😡
I'm not over it either.
Benchmade supports all of the most extreme gun laws: banning all “assault weapons,” 10 round mag limit, etc... Benchmade went out of their way to prop up these politicians. Boycott Benchmade.

Yeah. Why not simply selling them to FFL dealer that could sell them to induviduals?
@@Eatsoup3 You're making a lot of assumptions about my politics. I'm a pro-2A leftist who feels that police power and militarization has gotten out of control in America. I'm more worried about Benchmade's support of police power than anything you mentioned. And besides. I'll miss those guns. Each gun is a beautiful thing, and needs a warm hug and loving home. Your or I could've given one or two of those guns the home and love they needed. But Benchmade took all that away. Think of the gats, you monster.

1. Great review.
2. I hate you because I just ordered one after watching this video. (I mean that in the best possible way).
3. Your use of the word "Troglodyte" earned you my subscription.
You're awesome!
Buddy got paied my Micro tech...I like them both but I guess I'm not much of a kinfe snob. I did get a Infidel Mini and really like it.
Careful, you'll scratch your desk! Love the sexual innuendo! Friggin' hilarious!
I always said. Your Frenchmade steel liners were last years but backs mixed with China pot metal
I would have to go with microtech. Benchmade has done some questionable anti 2nd amendment things
Agreed.
Curious about your guitar shop tho. Life long player, myself. Made my money at it for long time. Havent shopped or compared in years but came home with Tom Anderson and Jean Larivee product... Cuz I'm damn picky and my wallet has my back. Hence my new Microtech interest upon having covered my BM and SIG wishlist. The Devil is in the details! 👹
Thanx for taking the time!
Always good info! Appreciate you!
🙈🙊🙉
Haven't had a problem with mine lol
there's no button play on the dirac
Correct.
Socom elite is my grail! Hope to get one one time!
They're awesome knives! Damn near indestructible!
😍New Merlot & Carbon!
you are funny man. good review
I should add that I don't care for the black painted blade or I'd just get the dirac d.
Its nice but side buttons are the way,IMO
I totally agree!

Hi penguin
Hello, other penguin!
There can only be one Penguin, I propose a duel.
@@suwatt6019 Why can't we live in a big stinky clump, as we do in the wild?
This guy is right. I used to have a Benchmade infidel before I switched to microtech. The Benchmade would dull its self when extending the blade because the sides would dig into the handle. Also, if you held the infidel upside down the knife didn't have enough spring power to retract the blade against gravity and would fail.
Thanks for taking the time weigh in. The Benchmmade could be an excellent knife, but there's a lot of room for improvement.
I bought an INFIDEL and tested it by stabbing into 3" of corrugated cardboard. The blade got pushed half way onto the handle and jammed solid. Couldn't budge it. So, I sent it back and got my money back and will never look back at that piece of crap ag
“And as a defensive knife it excels” does that mean you’ve stabbed someone with it?
When you select a new defensive pistol, do you shoot a few people with it before you carry it? Don't be a jackass.

@@thegunpenguin So true, So many guns so many knives, a dream come true for me. LOL
This is gonna be the first auto knife I’ve ever handled. And the most expensive knife I’ve ever had lol. I’ve only owned Spyderco folding knives.

Yah, it make-a my brain hurt.

I like the Infidel, Cool knife if it wasn't a piece of crap.
Agreed.
I love Microtech knives but your comments on Benchmade are ridiculous IMO. I own a Microtech Dirac Delta in OD distressed green. I truely love it but Benchmade makes some very great knives too though! You might hate Benchmade but they make kiiler knives, just like Microtech.
I personally don't enjoy Benchmades, but it's fine that you do. You like what you like!
@@thegunpenguin
Yeah, I don't see a huge difference between the two other than designs.
On the Dirac, it looks like Microtech copied someone else's design, again. Take a look at the Caston designed D Rocket Zulu Spear.
They share a few aesthetic similarities, but we'd need to see the guts of both side by side to truly know.
@@thegunpenguin Don't get me wrong, I like the look of the Dirac, but Microtech is no stranger to "borrowing " other companies' designs. As for the Zulu Spear , all reviews look extremely positive.
@@sturmgewehr70 Microtech copying other manufacturers is one of those industry controversies that I don't tend to comment on, mostly because we'll never really know what happened, in each of those cases, and I don't have enough information to say. Folks do seem to like the Zulu though, and that's great for Rocket!
@@thegunpenguin As a 30 plus year knife collector, I respect your "no comment, " but it's been proven pretty valid. I currently have several Microtechs, so I enjoy their classics. Enjoy your Dirac.
