Wow. This segment resonated with me deeply because in the black neighborhood, we grew up with something similar called "The Candy Lady's House." Everything your parents wouldn't buy, the candy lady had ranging from 0.5 cents -$1.00 (but nothing ever was over $1) at her house.😊 I'm talking chico sticks, Boston Baked beans, lemon heads, various creme flavored cookies, big pickles in a jar, tootsie roll chews, scoops of ice cream, flips (more commonly known as "frozen cups" in other black neighborhoods, lol) potato chips, etc. Kids nowadays don't know anything about this. Truly, like this story, something dwindling away into this more technology advanced future.

Wonderful sweet memories. My siblings and I still reminisce about our trips to the penny candy lady in our childhood neighborhood🍬🍭🍫💗

I was raised in Chicago, IL. and we had a penny candy store in our neighborhood. 100 pieces of candy for $1.00. The owner's wife would sit behind the counter and we would tell her what pieces of candy we wanted. Boy, she really had patience for this job. I remember candy lipsticks, flying saucers with pieces of candy inside, wax orange whistles for Halloween, candy dots on paper and so much more. Those are wonderful memories.

I grew up in Compton California and we had a variety of “ candy houses” which were either set up in a neighbors garage or kitchen. They had everything you mentioned including picked pig feet, hot sauce and lime juice to add to your chips, nachos, soda and even sandals or house shoes you could purchase for $1 or $2. My favorite candy was the Now & Laters and the watermelon beans. You could buy candy for 5 cents back in the 80s.

My childhood memory is riding a bike with my friend many blocks away to the Osco Drug for $0.20 ice cream cones. Circa 1982.

I grew up with "penny candy" stores in Detroit. I have lovely memories of Detroit and these stores were magical. Clove gum, flying saucers, chocolate bars, Better Made chips, huge jaw breakers, candy necklaces and bracelets, wax lips, Mary Janes... Children today may have electronics,
but they missed out on the joy of a "penny candy" store.

We had one called the Nibble-Nook! Yes, to clove gum, juicy fruit, beechnut, loved Flying Saucers (didn't they have something rattling around inside?), "Fireballs," along with the wax lips were wax mustaches and fingernails (we'd chew them up even tho they were not edible!), plus those flavored sugar liquid filled wax bottles! PixyStix (pure sugar in a straw), Black Cow, Sugar Babies, Sugar Daddy, Bonamo turkish taffy, tootsie roll pops, chocolate babies, bubblegum cigars, candy cigarettes ! And a lot of the candy really cost just a penny. And then there was a rack of 10 or 12 cent comic books--wish I still had those, they'd be worth a mint. Does anyone else remember the High Noon candy bar? a personal favorite.

Growing up in the 70s we had a corner pharmacy in our town that sold penny/5 cent candy. The owner knew all the neighborhood kids names and what they liked. It had closed by the late 70s and was the last of it's kind in the area. Still miss it.

This is translation of a childs fantasy that many children have lived within. Like a "Willie Wonka," experience. So enchanting it is loved, missed and reminsced when we as adults go to Macey's or a candy shop that has a variety of candy that seems to never end. Love this story. 😎

Wonderful that their tradition is still in existence. I remember penny candy at elementary school. Candybars were 5 cents, Coca-cola in the 6 oz bottles was 6 cents. Ice cream was 10 cents.

Ahhh! Bittersweet memories of my younger days when I ate candy loaded with sugar. Fast forward to me now as an adult with a mouth full of fillings and crowns. My dear mother thought sugar and candy were on the top of the food pyramid. We all suffer from our parent's ignorance where sugar is concerned.
