Hello, Miriam! I am now retired as a high-end residential interior designer in the US. In all my years of designing, I very seldom saw interlined window treatments. Mine were most often interlined! I found that it gave the treatment a softer, more lux look. it was also wonderful additional insulation for either the heat of summer or the frigid cold of winter. My window treatments also held up much better as well as hung better from the beginning. I would imagine that interlining would often be used in Canada?
Thank you! I appreciate the plain spoken approach. And even though unlimited budgets are available for a select few, this is a very reasonable approach for the rest of us. And speaking of a layering, a video on lighting and layering would be very welcome!
Miriam, your drapery treatments are always Luxe and Beautiful! Now I understand how your window treatments stand head and shoulder above the rest! Thank you for taking the time to explain shade options, whether to inside mount, outside or cover casing. I love the relaxed Roman because they soften the look when done in a lightweight fabric; and I love that you break and not puddle your draperies. Lol!
So happy I found your channel. I own and operate a workroom in the Tulsa area. This video is one of the best descriptions of window treatments. Thank you for your expertise.
I have just found you recently Miriam. I can't get enough of your videos at the moment. Love your style and how you present both yourself and your business.
I have been slowly updating my house, and my master bedroom window treatment is my next. Current one is shutter style and old, mulfunctioning on one side. This video is so timely and offered all the advice I needed. Your videos are so helpful and always make sense. I always learn something. Thank you so much!
Oh my. I love my tall shutters. I did not want them when i bought my house. They were here. But i have grown to love them. My ceilings are high. Every morning at 7:00am i open them across the front of the house. I close them at twilight. It is a ritual now. The back of the house has curtains which i want to replace. That is why i clicked on your video. Thanks for the great tips.
Hi Miriam! I followed your advice on layering blinds and draperies. I went with a bamboo roller blinds (textured look) in the back of the house which is the family room and light drapery for light filtering. I wish I can share my pictures. I’m so pleased and proud of the look. Thank you for all your videos!
Thanks for the detailed info on draperies! You mentioned something very important that I had not heard before. That is to maintain fullness draperies should be pleated. It's a small detail that I have not heard from other design videos on draperies. Thanks!
Hi thanks for watching with sliding doors I always do full drapery panels They can be closed if needed with French doors you have two choices when would be to do the drapery panels the other would be to do Roman blinds or silhouettes right on each door hope this helps
Hi Miriam, this was so helpful as well as being easy to understand. I wonder if you could also cover curtain rods in another video. I am going to use full width lined pinch pleat curtains in living room and dining room (all one big long room) and am searching for my best options for rods that are NOT extendable.
Hi!🙋🏾♀️ I'm new to your channel and loving it!! After many, many videos I think I've found one that fits me! WHEW...it was work getting here! I'll be tuning in regularly! Excellent at explaining and giving advice! Thank you!
Excellent! I agree with you 100% on the length of drapes, "breaking" has a neat tailored look I prefer. What about a "smocked" header? You used to see them in semi-formal interiors, but I havent seen them in years....
Thank you 🙏🏼! Easy to understand! Q. I need to add fabric to my velvet panels for a better lengths (they’re short 8”) and wonder if I can just add a different (but compartible) color of velvet panels to the bottom… would that work well?? Thank you 🙏🏼
Hi thanks for watching you could absolutely add a contrasting panel at the bottom! Typically when doing that I like to add a heavier fabric which in your case isn’t possible, so instead I would add a darker colour to get the illusion of more weight at the bottom and I would also take the line of the bottom of your window trim and match the seam between the two colours to that. so for example, if your window trim is 2 feet above the finished floor that would be the size of the contrasting panel. Hope this helps
Hello Miriam! This is the first time I watched one of your videos. Thank You SO much for sharing your advice. You have expertise we all need and we appreciate you sharing. I am doing a master bedroom drapery. I feel overwhelmed. I have never purchased drapery before. I am looking at silk, wool and velvet- not sure which one I will go with!
Miriam, I found this very helpful. I'm lost when it comes to window treatments and decorating in general. We have dark faux wooden blinds that are so heavy and put up heavy drapes, so awful. I would love to see a video on selecting area rugs and proper placement of furniture. My surroundings really influence my mood Thank you!
Hi thanks for watching. Not sure if you’ve signed up for our news letter yet but we are actually doing a blog post on how to select carpet sizes. Also check out our other video on furniture placement, it may be helpful to you. As for the wooden blinds I would definitely remove them if possible and replace them with a roller blind if privacy is an issue, if not just keep the drapery, I think you’ll be much happier
I first learned about colour when doing a Colour Me Beautiful course in the 90s. First thing the lady said "Colour defines the shape ie if your red top finishes across your widest part, and your pants/skirt begins there your widest part is highlighted" (approximate quote!). Also useful for me was: In spaces, pale colour makes the walls/item receed. Dark colour will make the walls/ item 'jump out at you'/catch your eye. I use these ideas in rooms now. I'm in small spaces so I use pale shades and only colours that blend so very little 'jumps out' at me. I heard another useful tip: paint A4 sheets of paper with paint colours you are considering and pin them round the space, moving them into different lights to see how they look/make you feel. Or cut pictures from magazines of rooms you like and replicate(even cheaply) 3 or 4 main characteristics in your space. I'm a self-confessed style nerd. Sorry long text. G Ire
Hi thanks for watching. Paint is not only dependent on the direction the window is facing but also on the colour of the floors, whether there’s a lot of greenery outside the windows and many other factors.
I love, love your channel and your great advice! I have basic dark brown fabric curtains in my living room. I wish a had money to change the for something that looks lighter and fresher. My question for you is, is there anything I can do to freshen up my already boring curtains without investing lots of money? Thanks ❤
I moved into a house that has the same big white blinds on every window. While they are nice, I found myself wanting to take all of them down. Thank you for making me not feel crazy. I think fabric makes a house feel more comfortable. Little by little, I am hanging curtains, but nothing in the house is standard size, ceilings and windows are large. Can you do a video on choosing a curtain rod? Is color just a personal preference?
Good guidance info. Please take a look at Hunter Douglas's Duette Cellular shades. They offer a sheer......and it can be created with 2 fabrics of which one is a sheer. So you can have light control/privacy and denser light control/privacy. AND it can be top down/bottom up. Love this product.
New to your channel. VERY informative. Would love to see samples with 3 sets of French doors with transom windows above them, plus a kitchen window with a transom window above.
Thank you for such a through explication of the types and reasons for each layer. My question is do I try to closely match the wall color or just use a neutral shade? I have a solid color sofa, and patterned chairs, and a pair of chairs that are striped that pull all the colors from the patterned chairs. Also, with 10’ ceilings do I go all the way up with the drapes to my crown molding..or just part way between the top of the window & the crown. Your examples are so beautiful & elegant. Thank you for your time, help & expertise with my queries.
Should I place two grey velvet sofas across from each other running down the two sides of fireplace and I need two chairs at the end. What color would you chose? The floor is cherry wood.
I want to update my bedroom and the windows are not so much the issue but rather the sliding glass door. I had curtains before and between the hubby not taking the time to pull them back and the dogs going in and out they were quickly ruined. I was thinking of what I would call shutter door. Look of shutters that are actually sliders themselves. I can't afford to replace the sliders so do you have other suggestions? By the way I recently found your channel and love it!
hi Miriam. Thanks so much for this video . We are remodeling currently several rooms and i was wondering what you think i should expect in terms of cost for a decent average size window treatmen t? We have a 4000sq ft home just to give an idea . Trying to budget for window treatments. Thanks again.
Love your videos! Need to cover sliding door. Do you have a suggestion of something with remote control option? I like silhouettes since they can filter light when closed. Not sure if they make for patio sliding door?
Hi thanks for watching generally I don’t use planes for a patio sliding door as they need to be mounted above the door and as they come down the handle will get in the way I much prefer panel that could be opened and closed
I have a sliding door panel that is 105" × 105" in a livingroom with 12' ceiling. Should I hang the curtain all the way up? Or just 4~6" above the door frame? I plan to have s-wave style with two layers (sheer + room darkening) or one light filtering, with "kiss" length.
Hello Miriam, Thank you for sharing this information. I got a question in regards arched windows? We are considering shutters for arched front window but I do hear a lot that they are outdated and that they don’t allow much light to come in. But in this case what are the options? Thank you!
Excellent video! I took notes! 😂 I bought a bunch of semi sheer curtains for the back end of my home (its literally all windows floor to ceiling where each section measure 9’, 15’ and 12’ long); I wanted to do the euro french pleats but am unsure if i should unhem all the sides to make them into one extra wide curtain and then add the pleats or if i should just pleat each panel set. Each panel is 50x108” and I have 12 sets. Please advise. Many thanks.
One question I remembered to ask...Help me understand why a drapery rod used for only panels (side draperies) are 1) black in color, to be seen and 2) is installed across the length of the window/door, again to be seen? I guess my interest here is - shouldn’t the design want to eliminate another object to look at? Why not use shorter rods that are 24_30” L?
Hi thanks for watching, there are a couple of reasons to use a full rod rather than two shorter ones. the first is that the rod going right across is more lux; using two shorter ones actually looks like you tried to save money, the second reason is that it would actually be more distracting and make you notice that rather than the beautiful drapery panels and other details in the room
What is your advice? Should I start with painting the walls and buying furniture before I pick out the window treatments? Or do you think I start with window treatments and play off the window treatments?
Are the s fold curtains achieved by just fabrics without pleating plus a heading tape for a fold? Is there any type of heading tape on the market that you would recommend?
Your videos are very helpful, and I watch them regularly. Much as I also admire you and your personal style, maybe when you are offering tips, you could give more screen space to your design scapes, and not to yourself.. Valance are old fashions almost no body used them anymore. I noticed the window plain with blind are seeing more and more in used. The house looks bright and in spacious appearance.
Hi Miriam, Do you have any advice on different shapes of windows. My house has some triangular shaped windows and I am unable to find a solution for them.
I enjoyed your video. But would love to see more design options on valances. I’m getting ready to treat the windows that flank my fireplace and look out onto my pergola terrace. I want to use drapery panels but the window that is used in this older home is white hard to work with. The fireplace is in center. And there isn’t much room on either side of the window itself for the drapery to fall. What is your thoughts on valances. ? Will this cheapen the look of my living room. And also I planned to use chinoiserie fabric as all my furniture pieces are solid. I have a very expensive rug to center the room and need to bring the color up to the 10 ft ceiling so the room doesn’t look bare and sparse. Are jabots out. And what do you think of cornices. Also. Do you do online zoom consultations? Thanks. Your home is beautiful and peaceful.
You need to zoom in and spend more time and detail on showing specific examples. We don't need to see you as much as we do the items you are discussing.
I know this is an older video and you may not see it but give some advise please to “ poor me”. I have a townhome with a bay window. The middle window is larger than the side ones. I have white wooden blinds that the first owner put back in 2001. Still excellent condition , it’s my living room and I keep them open for the morning sun because I also have a few plants in that room. I would like some nice simple drapery. These blinds are so heavy to pull. How do you style a bay window. Local designers want to come in and consult for entire house. I don’t have any budget for that. I’m just trying to do the best I can from watching you tube designers . Any suggestions please😢
I would love this video reissued to TH-cam's platform without the sound effects and the music. Need to understand drapery but struggling with the competing music. Your voice and tone work best alone.
