I found that I had the most accurate measurement if I use the calibration standards supplied with the kit (open, short load), and at the end of the test cable I hooked to the antenna cable. At the UHF frequencies, I've found that the test cable length can change the measurements, and have found that it is important to calibrate using the frequency range I want to employ to measure.. We LOVE Wolfbox! Penny's will be upgraded this winter. You see a lot of video from it on this channel! There are two sitting on April's desk right now-- one for April's tow pig and another for Kenneth's JL. And Roy says he's definitely putting one in his MJ Crawler. April's been thinking of applying to become a Wolfbox brand ambassador, but hasn't done so just yet.
The perfect frequency to tune to would be 465.1375 as that is the exact middle of the GMRS band. If you get perfect SWR on that frequency, you're in perfect shape.
If I were tuning exclusively for GMRS I would agree. In this case the antenna will be used with a bit wider range of frequencies and so have to compromise some to have it work well enough across them all.
