You neglected to mention the best part - being able to smack your minions to hurry them up. All the sounds and the spells I'd forgotten about gave me a nostalgia trip like never before. I played the hell out of this game when we first got a computer. Reinstalling it now, thanks!

Take a look at War for the Overworld. It has some flaws, but it's THE spiritual successor to DK1. I like it a lot better than DK2, even though the creatures are not as endearing. Nostalgia is impossible to beat though. Take a look and pick it up on sale at least, you will not regret it :)

try slapping horned reaper. first thing you get is : your creatures are getting angry, and then theres nothing stopping that unit to go on murderous trail killing everything he comes accross. fun times....

still very playable with KeeperFX today, love the dark and stylized theme of the first game that was lost on DK2 and subsequent inspired titles. gameplay feels faster than DK2, creatures have more unique roles and sound effects are more satisfying (Bile demon farts, imp sounds, Demon Spawn screams). this game has personality!
"Creatures all work harder when another creature is being tortured in the Torture Chamber. In addition, it also causes any creatures of the same type to take only 50% of their wage at the next payday." Evil is good.

DK was one of my all-time favorites growing up. In many ways I prefer it over the sequel, even though they did add a lot, I just like the creepy, darker presentation and the harshness the original game exuded over the more cartoony and easy-going DK2. I'd argue Bullfrog was probably the most creative game developer ever.

This Game and its successor are the only strategy games i ever enjoyed .
Possession , animations , sounds , intuitivity , replayability and all the other cute / evil details : they all go together very well in this cauldron to produce a magic potion that hardly ever failed to temporarily boost life's joyfactor with a significant amount .
This is one of the few Games i rewarded a whopping 10/10 .

You'll probably want to look out for Obsidian Entertainment's upcoming game, Tyranny. You also play as the bad guys in Tyranny, and AFTER they've already won. It's essentially about managing an evil empire. Supposed to be coming out this year.

I've always enjoyed the level in the deeper dungeon campaign where you're stuck with nothing but four warlocks, a jail and a graveyard and you have to assemble a kind of undead army...the idea of doing a challenge run through the whole campaign like that never occurred to me until now, but now I'm definitely destined to re-install it to give it another shot.

The Possession spell is what *made* the Dungeon Keeper franchise for me. I had played my fill of God-Games and I *hated* it when I couldn't manually force an AI to do a thing I want it to do. Dungeon Keeper was the first franchise I saw that fixed that issue so creatively and effectively and in such a fun way.

  • @hiiambarney4489
    @hiiambarney4489 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I was 6 when I first got this game.
Still to this day one of my all time favorites.
Something that I hold so high and dearly in fact, it is in my personal Top 10, maybe Top 5 even. T
he sequel and the spiritual successor couldn't hold a candle to the gameplay of DK1 in my eyes.
Every level had this... Mystique to it, it felt like a place with History, that you are rampaging through on your conquest to power.
Yet, where every other RTS would cloud your vision, almost every slightly interesting looking spot on the map was worth exploring.
You were rewarded for a keen eye of patterns and venturing out into the unknown, sometimes you would find new allies that you have never seen before, sometimes you found traps guarding a stash of gold to boost your economy or a patch of Jewels, sometimes you would find those Mystery Boxes that have their own way of breaking a level or even the next one (interestingly enough the levels with a spike in difficulty almost always have one of the creature transport boxes).
So many things to discover but it doesn't stop there, it's also on a mechanics level.
Creatures you train have different abilities they learn at certain levels, it was interesting to see what set of Spells or Abilities your newly acquired creature can have and even more fun to play around with it (albeit in pixelated graphics with clunky controls) in first person mode.
You could Micro Manage your Imps to make them faster working, even controlling them yourself to claim territory or mine Gold faster or scout the unknown.
So many more little things that just add up!
It definitely had a bit more charm in those early days of the internet back then, when you couldn't just search for tutorials and map reveals but even now, if you play it for the first time and look up everything there is to the game from one players perspective, there are many more things for you to find.
The Temples where a great example, I always had to look up what combination of creatures I would have to sacrifice to get a Horned Reaper. (Bile Demon, Troll and a Mistress). But my mind was blown that it can also attract a Tentacle if build next to a body of water!

The funny part is, there was a game from the '80s that let you play the villain.
Wizardry IV has you taking on the role of an wvil sorcerer who is trying to leave his own tomb. But each level has a gang of adventurers that are trying to loot your tomb and/or stop you fro. Getting to the surface.
You have to use summons, black magic and necromancy to fight the heroes of each level.

Good video, although it may have been prudent to mention the games' interesting development history (and drop the name Peter Molyneux?)
This game is fantastic. It's among the very greatest games on the PC, on par with Civ, Doom & C&C in my opinion. The War for the Overworld good Joseph mentions at the end of the first section is in a really good state now and will scratch that itch for more DK just fine. It is sorely lackign the DK charm though. The gameplay is good and improved upon however!

This is just the best, i came over a few games as a price, while selling christmasrelated stuff for a company as a preteen.
The pile included hospital, Dark omen, a few other not worth mention and this one, Dungeon Keeper.
This one and Dark omen are those I over and over have revisited. So great and I can't understand how few actually have played this awsome fenomenon. The sequel, DK2 was one I never played as young and during my later years, tried but never came over a copy that wouldnt crash after 5-6 levels. It was Okey, but didnt give you thesame connection to your minions and it went to big in some ways and lost some of it's lovable parts.
This game is awsome.. Wouldnt matter if it was for the good you fought. Its the gameplay that is amazing, well as a kid it was "good to be bad" ;)

FWIW, Tecmos Deception also had you play as a bad guy, released a year before Dungeon Keeper - your ultimate goal is to resurrect satan - it's really good and underrated (heard the sequels sucked, never tried them) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tecmo%27s_Deception:_Invitation_to_Darkness

I would guess because it would break balance even harder than hero units ? See also the various BattleZone games that made it even more the core of the game !

I see this is an eight year old video but the first game I played in a similar vein to this one would be Tecmo's Deception. You basically take control of a haunted house setting up traps for explorers, there was a story to it but for the life of me I don't remember the finer details.

I just started playing DK2 again and this video was very interesting to watch, since I didn't play DK1.
You mentioned a video on DK2 and War for the Overworld but I can't find it in your channel. Will it ever see the light of day?

Hey, if you didn't already, check out War for the Overlord. It is basically Dungeon Keeper 3, renamed because copyright, even with some of the original DK developers working on it.

It would be cool if dwarf fortress had the possession ability to where you can posses a dwarf in your fortress and you will be taken into adventure mode as that character.

0:55 _Who's your daddy and what does he do?_
No, I actually liked that text. And I'm not normally one for ye olde English. The question at the end feels random, but rather amusingly so.
Well, you've got me. Although I've played DK2 through in its day (and a couple of times more since), I've considered the original a few times whilst browsing its GOG page and ultimately decided that it was just too old to float my boat with no nostalgia but that which I have for the sequel. You've convinced me to give it a shot. I like the sound of that mod which cautiously revamps it. I wonder, were the familiar DK2 sounds I'm hearing in the vid added by the mod or are they actually original to the first game?
I agree that the player's age will largely determine which games might be most nostalgic to them. As a child of the 90s, born in '88, my nostalgic champions and my top favourites of all time are the original Fallouts and Deus Ex, followed closely by a few others such as Blizzard's classics. The former, in particular, are indeed games I've gone back to on occasion over the years, games I would've replayed many more times if only there weren't so many games I want to play. As the adage goes: _too many games, too little time._

I actually have wanted to try this for a while, as I missed it when I was a younger. And, as an aside, I really love the style of the first game and think the second looks horribly ugly!
