Thank you for all your help on the living room drapes! There is a lot that goes into choosing window treatments and many people just skip them. Hopefully, this little interior design lesson will help simplify the shopping process and you, too, will get to enjoy beautiful windows that give that "moved in" feel.
P.S. Tell me what you would do with my tall bookcase.

Yay! You chose the beautiful plaid for drapes. I have never been able to decorate a room before, but watching you, I'm learning. I can landscape very well, but indoors design? Not until you . The bookcase? I'd step outside the usual and paint it a darker shade of the green of the velvet couch, but that's just me. I'm anxious to see what you choose, and why.

My mom always said that curtains are things like lace, and cotton, and tend to be on the thinner side and suitable for kitchens and bedrooms or as a sheer liner behind drapes. While drapes are lined and heavy and more suitable for living rooms and offices and you would layer them over the sheer curtains. We had gold drapes in the living room that hung on a pully system that you could pull a string to open and close. No need for blinds or shades. The kitchen and bedrooms had cotton curtains in various colors depending on the season and the decor. Back in the day, pre 90's, homemakers would often have curtains for each season for each room... The drapes remained the same year round.

Wow!! The rods took the curtains to another level. Excellent choice. I would paint the shelf the same as trim and put it flat to the wall. Also fill it with only books...vintage of course!

Lovely choice. Instead of the clip rings, I would suggest to line them, add pleater tape, insert curtain hooks and hang on the rings. The clips seem to casual to me.

I love your choice of draperies. As far as your book shelf, it would be lovely painted with the same color as your trim and be repositioned flushed with the wall instead of at an angle. Then that space will look like a built in and more curated. Beautiful room.

    • @tinamcivor2996
      @tinamcivor2996 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes I feel the same about that shelf. I think a floor to ceiling, simple, built-in shelf painted to match and filled with books would elevate the corner.

The brown tattersall check draperies are beautiful. If you decide to take them down, line and maybe interline them, and add pinch pleats instead of flat panels, I think you will find that they really look elegant. The fabric you used is not inexpensive, and warrants a more formal finish. Pinch pleats with 2 folds instead of 3 might work better for heavy fabric. The draperies look great either way.

I think the chocolate draperies are wonderful and so rich. I just so happen to be trying to source old fashioned roller shades to replace my old and ratty, old fashioned roller shades. It used to be you just ordered them at the local Blind Alley or what have you. They are no where to be seen without the ugly top valance, when I need just a plain roll. Ugh! It's all in the details isn't it? Your living room is really coming together and so beautiful! I think your book case would look nice painted to match your trim and to look like a built in. Julia

I would also add the blinds in a wood tone, or a matchstick blind to cover the starkness of the white windows. Then you dont have to pull the curtains shut ,,, just adjust the slats.

I picked the brown for the drapes. They look great, especially with the gold finials and curtain rings. For the bookcase, my suggestions are stripping it and staining it, painted taupe like the rug and upholstery on the chairs, or a mossy green. I feel there is a lot of the wall color already and the eye needs a contrast.

  • @inglishhomeandgarden8386

    Curtains and rods look great!
With this rich colour scheme, the or er shelf looks slightly misplaced.
Yes, paint it like the trim.
(But as your home is moving towards classic elegance, a real antique corner cupboard would look even better.)

I was so happy to see you went with the brown curtains for balance, and boy do they look absolutely beautiful in your room! As for the bookcase, I would choose cream or white to give the eye a resting place and it would look nice with the white/cream lamp behind the sofa, but I have a feeling you may choose the wall color to make it look built in. No matter what you go with, I know you will make it look beautiful.

Love your room Sarah and your coffee table you repurposed. The slate paint is beautiful and the bookcase would look lovely in that corner painted the same. Loved your video tutorial on window treatments. I have 3 traverse rods professionally hung years ago sitting room, family room, master bedroom. I have changed out curtains since original and still love the traverse rod with the draperies/curtains 😊. Now it seems hard to find curtains long enough since they go up to the ceiling. I also have the half moon window in the bedroom only. The ceilings are vaulted so its hard to take the traverse rod to the top's edge over the half moon window, we did use a linen fan inside the window that matched the solid curtain.🤷‍♀️ I'm on the hunt for curtains even now. So appreciate your video today, thank you. Im getting your alerts no problem, fyi. I did rehit the bell and selected "all" and it has been working ok so far when you mentioned it awhile back. Take it easy😊

I thought you would choose the darker drape and I really like the thought process behind your choice. I believe it makes such sense to balance the room - great choice. I would tape or bring the pleats together in some way to coax them into position for a short period of time. I wouldn’t keep the colour of the bookcase. I would use the colour you mentioned or a dark colour mimicking the dark colour of the furniture on the other side of your room. I enjoyed the longer video. I always learn something from you that I can put into practice. Thank you. Looking forward to your lighting video. I hate ‘boob lights’. I have replaced most but I want a ceiling light in my entryway. My dilemma - eight foot ceilings and six foot tall family members.

I’m glad you went with the brown windowpane check for the curtains, they add such a warm touch to an already cozy room. I think I was wrong about the gilded table, it looks great! As for the bookcase, I think it needs to be darker, so it fades a bit into the background. When I think of dark academia, I think of English rooms with many dark elements that takes a while to notice all the details when you enter, so I think it would be better fading into the background a bit more.

Maybe the camera doesn't pick up what it looks like in person, but the rod placement doesn't look high enough and the width of the panels look too narrow, even if you never intend on closing them. I'm surprised you didn't line them; a dark drapery will fade with the sun. The fabric is really nice, it has an old-world charm to it.

You are right on all accounts, I may make those changes later, as time and money allow.

Is the bookcase wood? Could you strip it and take it back to the wood?

I would paint the bookshelves the same as the walls

Curtains are shirred onto a rod. Draperies are pinch pleated and open and close on a traverse rod. I was the head of a department store (which is now Macy's) drapery department.

Just curious is your middle cushion on your sofa put on backwards or why is it dark on the bottom half? Next to your sweet kitty. 😁

If you are not going to get rid of the bookcase I would paint it the color of the trim. I feel like it’s so pretty but doesn’t belong in the room as is.
