    Great video. I have a white male canary who was born in the last breeding season and a female (black, yellow and white mixture) canary born 2 breeding seasons ago. They always fight and I notice that my male has a lot of anxiety and he get very jumpy when we put our hands in to change the water or food. I feed them boiled eggs, apples, lettuce, and seeds primarily, sometimes other foods too, and I give them 13ish hours of light. But I noticed that when I let them out of their cage they flew together with the male following the female everywhere. But they had been fighting so much I thought it might be better to separate them until they're ready to be together (like male calling to female and trying to be closer together). What should I do? do you think they'll be ready to mate this season or will I have to wait until next season? And what did you mean by "exercise" do you mean letting them fly around the house?

    Hello Thank you for this great video. I am wondering about my hen. She seem ready to breed and has a very swollen, egg shaped, vent area. It appears like the egg is just sitting inside there waiting to pop out. I has been 2 or 3 days like that. Should I be concerned about it.? Otherwise she seems happy and is busy building the nest.

    I like that they are picky about their mate. My 2 definitely like each other but only meet during free flight time so far. 2 and 1 1/2 years old, they should be ready. I am the hold-up but am thinking about giving them a chance this year.

    Hi I have recently welcomed into my home 2 canaries . I am not sure if they are male or female. one of them is starting to rip up the newspaper at the bottom of the cage and putting it in the water bowl I have for them. I am not sure if I should put the nesting basket and stuff in yet or not as I was told only to put it in, in September. What do you suggest?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I would put the nest in. It seems that your hen is ready to breed if she is ripping paper and trying to build a nest with it.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leave it bee. The hen will take care of the eggs and should lay an egg a day until 4-5 eggs are laid. Then she will sit on them and hatch them out. try not to disturb her and she wont get stressed out.

    I just got a pair of canary's they are 9 months old, can I breed them this winter? I got them in one cage can I do thet? or I have to separate them first for while?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you plan on breeding around Jan, Feb time they should be old enough to breed for you. I would separate them for right now and get your male singing really loud to help your hen come into condition and then put them together when they are both showing signs of breeding.

  • @annamaewilliams4010
    @annamaewilliams4010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    After making a beautiful nest, my hen laid 2 eggs. I actually saw them mate a few times, so we assumed the eggs were fertile, and we've been anxiously waiting through the 14 days incubation time. It's been 16 days now and no babies. What do you think? What should we do with the eggs?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      More than likely they are not fertile or the chicks died in the shell. You can candle the eggs to see if there are any signs of movement in the eggs. If not I would throw the eggs out and let the pair try again.

    • @annamaewilliams4010
      @annamaewilliams4010 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. Is it common for the male to lay on the eggs along with the hen? We often find them both sitting in the nest at the same time.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that is common and a good sign that both parents are in breeding mode and want to help raise the chicks.

    • @annamaewilliams4010
      @annamaewilliams4010 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. We removed the bad eggs and the nest for a few days. Then we put a new nest pan in with new nesting material on the bottom of the cage, and HE insists on sitting in the empty nest. So, we moved him to another cage to see if she'd be interested in building again. What do you think? Is it too late in the season?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's always worth a try, if she builds a nest again she is letting you know that she wants to breed again. If she doesn't build then it's probably best to give them a break until nest breeding season.

    My female canary is sitting separated from the male. They are singing to each other all day long and the're moving the're head up and down. Is it a sign that they are ready to breed? They are sitting in cages in the livingroom.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are good signs. can the male reach the female through the bars? If so does he try to feed her? Or does she make little consecutive chirping noises towards him? If so then they are showing signs that they are ready to breed.

    I don’t know what to do, I have a pair of canneries, when I got them she layed 3 eggs, but she broke and thy just disappeared I think thy ate it. Now she does not go near him, and she is blown up all the time and she looks bored. Should I separate them, who must come out him or her...? We are in winter , so there breading will be around March I think..... she doesn’t jump around and sleeps at the bottom of the cage in the corner...? What is the problem here pls advice..🙏🏻😪

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the really late response. It sounds like your female is egg bound and not ready for laying eggs. Or she has an underlying sickness and it is stressing her body too much to lay eggs. I would take the male out and put some heat on the female. You can add liquid calcium to her water and see if she perks up.

    • @izabeau1953
      @izabeau1953 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      birdnerd hi, well she died ... I took her out thinking she is perhaps stressed. She was raming the corners to get out but the next day in the morning I saw her dead on the floor. I should not have took her out I think 🤔
      I am learning but have bought a replacement and hope this time it would be better.
      In what temperature should thy be in. I have them indoors but my home is cold and I have about 18C inside ...
      I am to scared and the cost to put a heating on day and night as dropping temperatures can also let them die . I close them day behind all the time and close them with blankets at night 🤷🏼‍♀️ I live on the north of our island 🌴 and it’s more fresher and humid. 👍

    I have just started breeding my two canaries. They are mating and feed each other, have built a nest. The male sometimes takes bits of the nest out and puts it either in the food or water bowl. The female watches this and picks up as many of the pieces she can and puts them back in the nest. Surprisingly I saw her try to mount the male! He got scared, is that normal?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that your male is still too young and hasn't quite figured out how the process works yet. Or it could be that the male isn't quite ready to breed yet and the female is ready to breed.

      It could be that they aren't quite ready to breed yet. Or one is ready to breed but the other isn't. I would separate them for a week side by side and see if their behavior changes. Look for the male feeding the female. The female building a nest, and no aggressive behavior towards each other

    • @birdnerd

      The general rule of thumb is that the birds especially the females should be at least 12 months old before breeding them.It's recommended that you breed siblings together there could be several genetic issues that happen to the chicks if siblings are bred together.

      Males will sing vigorously when they are in breeding condition. Females will respond to the singing by chirping back to the males and they will call to the males with little sequential chirps. Many times females will start gathering materials to build a nest of will start plucking her breast feathers. These are all signs that they are ready to breed.
