A tutorial on gauge will be perfect ! Thank you so much Tash, in advance. I am constantly double guessing and totally confusing myself.
Same on here!!!! Regards Tash!!!! Thanks for all your knowledge!!!
Thanks so much Sandra. :)
Thank You Maria. x
Hi Tash, I have to tell you how much I enjoy your podcast. It’s my favourite! It’s so informative and I enjoy seeing all your fo’s; they look so good on you. I love the shore tee with the blazer. Very sharp! Thank you for all the work you put into the podcast.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments Elizabeth. They make me so happy. I hope you have a lovely week. :)
I could always use a gauge video!
Your knitting is beautiful!
Thank you so much! 😊Gauge video coming soon. :)
Yes please!! % Picking up would be most helpful!❤
I would also love the percentage tutorial for picking up stitches. ❤
Will do!!
That will definitely be coming in the next few weeks. :)
Your Shore Tee is amazing. I've had the pattern in my favorites for awhile, but wasn't quite sure how/when I'd wear it. I actually think yours is better than the original. And the color is delicious!
A tutorial on pick up rates would be fabulous!
Thank you so much! Pick up rates tutorial coming very soon. :)
I always find your tutorials to be the most informative and helpful for me as a new knitter. I would be very grateful for a tutorial for picking up percentages.
Thank you for the thoughtfulness you provide in helping knitters everywhere ❤
Thank you so much Carol. That will be coming soon. x
Hello and thank you YES, we would love an episode on calculating decreasing and picking up stitches, it is no easy feat especially if you have an eye condition and all the rows move around. I actually have to look for patterns that do not incorporate picking up stitches especially around the sleeve area and neck - there are OTHER WAYS to achieve a neckband and button band. Georgia from BC
Hi Georgia. Tutorial coming soon. Hope you will find it helpful. :)
Hi Tash. Loved your poncho, so simple but so effective. Yes for a tutorial ❤
Thank you so much Carol. xx
I used to sew all of the time. But I wanted to learn to knit and sewing fell to the wayside. I think it is because knitting is so portable. I can take it with me almost anywhere. That was even more so when my husband and I started a family, and I toke the knitting to doctor appointments, soccer games, ballet lessons, etc.
That was definitely one of the amazing positives of knitting. Incredibly portable crafting. I still take a project or two (or more) with me everywhere - just in case.
Gauge math! Yes, please. I often find myself between sweater sizes and make the larger size but with a gauge that’s more stitches per inch than called for, which seems to be working ok. But at the moment it’s all guesswork and I’d love to know the math. I’ve used your novice short rows and anker short rows tutorials to great success. Yay, math!
I am so pleased you have found the tutorials helpful. I plan to record the gauge one this weekend. :)
Some deep thinking going on Tash to to hear your thoughts and views. Thank you for your informative podcast. Looking forward to the Bali podcast. Have a fabulous week. I am doing weaving with my 8 students. Going really well & they all seem to enjoy themselves. My grade 1 student was interested in knitting a jumper 😃very enthusiastic. I suggested a hat instead. Very cute.
Thank you so much Jenny. That is so lovely that you are able to do fibre crafts with your students. :)
The Shore T looks great in that colour and the style suits you. The Poncho looks so stylish. Your other knits are interesting and could you do a tutorial on picking up stitches or gauge. Take care Tash ❤😊
Thank you so much Rosemary xx
The Shore Tee looks fabulous on you in that colour.
Thank you so much Rosemary. x
Good point about the questions in the Patty Lyons workbook. I'll have to remember - I'm getting it for Christmas.
I hope you enjoy it! :)
YES to you making a Peacock Tee! I love both of mine (now that the second one is dyed 😅)
Thank you so much Francesca. 😊
Another lovely episode! 🥰🥰 Your Shore tee is gorgeous xx
Thank you so much! 😊
Pick up rates…yes please and thank you! 😊
Coming soon! :)
I’m slowly catching up. Skipping the WIPs section as many are FOs so I’ll catch them then, but I’ve missed what you’ve been up to. Fab as always and hope the new car has been fun, probably hear about it as I catch up 💪🏻😂
Thanks so much Karen. Loving having a car that actually works. :)
Atomic habits purchased! I definitely need some guidance with that. The shore tee is lovely! Looks great on you and I like the sleeves too
Thank you so much Michelle. x
Hj Tash I have made a few Churchmouse ponchos. I am tall and measure on diagonal from shoulder to as long as I want it then cast on. Lovely podcast as usual ❤
Thank you so much Paula. xx
Your Shore Tee turned out perfectly! I love your tutorials. I’ve learned so much😊
Thank you so much 😊
Your Shore Tee is really quite elegant! Lovely.
I just looked through your tutorial list - it's extensive - and the one thing I was sure you had mentioned wasn't actually there. I think you have occasionally talked about neck ribbing that is too loose or flops forward and your solutions. I have that situation because neck ribbing should have been knitted on smaller needles - it is loose, flops and the neckline ends up being too wide. I think my solution will be to pick up the right leg of each stitch immediately below the ribbed neck, rip off the neck and then start knitting upwards on a smaller needle. For me this is quite drastic so wish me luck!
I have definitely talked about this before. I was thinking i would need to do this for the Shore Tee as it was doing what you were talking about before i blocked it. So i had planned to do exactly what you were mentioning (and record it) if blocking didnt fix the issue. Thankfully blocking DID fix it so i didnt have to do it. But i think your strategy is a really good one. Looking forward to hearing how it went. :)
Thank you Tash for this delightful and thoughtful video. All absolutely beautiful makes of course!!! The Shore Tee is incredible. I would LOVE a tutorial on pick up ratios. I'm working on a vest by Isabelle Kraemer and the projects on Ravelry have necklines that look "overpicked up" and if I could figure out the ratio magic that would be awesome. A lightbulb went on in my head as you were explaining! Anyhow have a wonderful week, OH and by the way the AUDIO in this was so crisp! I think I might need a mic.
Thank you so much Leanne. It took really bad crackling on my phone audio to prompt me into getting one. Now i am really glad i did. I didnt want to get one that i attach to myself as i am always trying things on. I got a Rode Video Mic Go II and it is super easy to use. Glad to hear that you have found the audio to be better. Pick up rates video coming very soon. :)
I made the Easy Folded Poncho in the same colour! Haven’t worn it in a while so I plan on getting it out today:) I added a cable on one edge, that helped with the endless stockinette.
That's a great idea and a lovely design feature. Thank you so much for sharing. :)
Oh your FO is fabulous. So lovely and feminine and classy! 😢. Thanks for the tip on the rate for picking up stitches. I would like a tutorial on that topic. I was reading Patty’s book today and it was the section on the different stitch mounts.
Thank you so much Evie. I already put it into practice today on my Clay Sweater. Very interesting. I will report back next week. :)
Everytime you model one of your knits I want to make it. I love your Shore Tee and looking forward to seeing the Sellwood Tee when you finish. I would love a gauge video - I can't seem to ever meet gauge (I think I'm a tight knitter) but I struggle trying to figure out whether to go up a size or not.
Thank you so much Stephanie. That is really helpful to hear what you would like to know when you dont meet gauge. I will make sure i cover a few different options. :)
@@mostlyknitting I think my confusion lies with when your knitting is a tighter gauge - is going up a size adequate or do I need to adjust the pattern as well. I haven't been knitting long enough to know how to adjust patterns yet but I'd love to hear your thoughts when you make the video. Thank you!! P.S. I sent you a message on ravelry as well re: the cumulus tee.
Hello, Tash! Yes, please to a future tutorial on picking up stitches. I don’t mind doing it, but I would like to become more precise in how I go about it. Usually, I start out trying to follow the pattern directions, then abandon that in frustration and just arbitrarily pick up until I have the right stitch count on my needles. Not ideal! 😅
Thank you. I will definitely be doing that one in the next few weeks. :)
Wow Tash, your Shore Tee is absolutely gorgeous, it looks so delicate!
A tutorial on picking up stitches would be fantastic, when you have the time, thank you. 😃
I made 2 of my ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ beanies for a 13 week old and a 3 year old and was rapt to deliver them on the weekend and see that they fit!!! Phew! 🧶🐏🥰
Thanks so much Susie. It is always a relief when an item we make fits the recipient. And that they are happy to receive them. :)
I love your Shore Tee and all your details on how to remedy issues especially in picking up stitches.
I am also Looking to purchase yarn for my Peacock Tee and never even thought of the Prima Cotton yarn. I love working with that yarn for making items for Breast Cancer survivors. I am looking to your Bali trip video. Have a productive week ahead! ❤
Thank you so much Maryann. The Cascade Ultra Pima really is a lovely, soft cotton. x
The shore tee is lovely. I love my peacock tee and will be making a second for next summer your red would be stunning ❤
Thank you so much Suzanne. I love hearing that you are pleased with your Peacock Tee. It gIves me confidence to start when people are really happy with a pattern. :)
Your Shore Tee turned out gorgeous! Suits and fits you so well!
Thank you so much Ursula. :)
Thanks for sharing, Tash. For me the crux of your message today is to never stop thinking..what your making, why your making, how, when and for who your making for.Mindfulness is key..not just using up stash for the sake of it but really keeping in mind all those questions.Your maths talk still sends shudders up my spine😉🤭Go well in your days, young lady.🙏❤️👋xx
Thank you so much Annie. I hope I can ease your Math anxiety with the bare bones of what you need to know, and hopefully it makes sense. Yes - mindfulness and intentionality is really important for me in maintaining peace and joy. :)
Your shore tee is beautiful! About the purls looking bigger in your garter in the round, I have heard (and it makes sense) that a purl stitch uses more yarn than a knit stitch because of the way you wrap your yarn. You could do combination knitting (wrap your purls the other way so the stitch is mounted backwards, then knit through the back on the next row) and they might match the other garter better.
Thanks so much Brenda. I've heard the same thing but was never actually tried it till now - crazy, huh? It definitely tightens things up. But i am a bit concerned it will muck up my gauge overall so i think for the Clay sweater, I am just going to be a bit more conscious of purling a bit tighter. I think that should be enough. :)
Tash I always end up opening the alpaca app on my phone to search the patterns you’re working on. You’re an inspiration ❤
Thank you so much Donna. Did autocorrect turn another word into alpaca? Or is there an app called alpaca i dont know about?
Thanks for the update and would love a Bali video if your daughter has time.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new car too. I’ve driven a Honda Civic for years (a typical teacher car😊) but would like to get something higher up like the Tucson next time.
Just picked it up today. All good so far. Fingers crossed it doesnt cause me any problems. :)
My travels after the 14 Day Iberian Knitting Adventure Cruise organised by Craft Cruises in September took my knitting friend and myself to the annual London Knitting and Stitching Show on October 12. My souvenir from the show was a signed copy of Patty Lyon's Book of Knitting Tricks. Patty had been in contact with the stall holder, and signed copies of her first book were available.
Hi Janice. How wonderful! I hope you and your friend had a marvelous time. I cant wait to do a knitting cruise. :)
Shore teee is great . And i can understand how hard it can be as i knitted this in pure linen. But definetly worth the effort. Clay sweater is one of my most worn knits you will enjoy the lighter weight of your yarn. I have it in air from drops and it worked well. Lastly Janka was pronounced perfectly ❤ ❤❤
Thank you so much Janka. And thank you for sharing your experience with the Clay sweater. I love hearing about how wearable a sweater is. xx
Votre top en lin est magnifique !🥰
Thank you so much Catherine. I am delighted with how it turned out :)
I’d love to see how you pick up and knit. I just finished a bottom-up top yesterday and really struggled with picking up around the neckline and armholes. I even placed markers at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the way around to “pace” myself and still got really frustrated with being off. Picking up on a straight line is OK but on those rounded/slanted edges drove me crazy! 🤪
I actually already have a video on this - hope that helps you th-cam.com/video/PjSUrK-yegc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=16PP1iUbxk3A2Cc-
I was thinking of doing a tutorial that is on the planning before you start pickingup stitches based on the number of rows you have to work with, the number of stitches you need to pick up, and whether you are picking up on the straight or an angle or into cast on stitches. I think i talk a bit about this in the video linked above but not a complete video on planning before you even get started. :)
@@mostlyknitting Great, thank you!
Wish I could take your knitting classes this Saturday…long flight from Vancouver Canada.
Thanks so much Paula. Maybe one day if you do a visit to Sydney. :)
That brown top is on my save list too
So many on the list!! ;)
@@mostlyknitting same, mine keeps growing
Beautiful knitting projects 🤍
Thank you so much. X
I enjoy your tutorials so - yes please.
Also, can you speak more about over dying yarn. Do you dye it first or when you have finished the project?
Thanks.
Thank you so much. I am not really very experienced in this area so I am sure there are others who can explain it better than me. You can either dye the yarn or the FO. I imagine there are advantages and disadvantages either way but again, i am not the best person to speak to it.
I also found that the smallest size of the Moby sweater has too much positive ease so I bought the Moby Sweater Junior and knitted the largest size. It worked out perfectly for my size. I used a fingering weight sock yarn paired with a mohair.
Thank you, thank you, thank you !! for drawing that version to my attention. I have deleted the other one from my queue and added this one. I was worried even the smallest of the other one would be too big for me. But the largest size on the Junior should work perfectly.
I made Joji’s Cedar Pullover with Shibui Reed 100% linen and it’s my favourite linen top. After washing it was so drapey and soft. I hope that’s the Shibui you have and it turns out the same.
Hi Hilda. This isnt the Reed unfortunately. I think it will soften with washing but is still a bit of a challenge to knit with...
Hello there, you are a machine knitting the amount that you do. I really enjoy your podcasts and listening to your suggestions. I have just learnt to reverse purl and the Easy Poncho that was your from the vault item would be a great way to perfect that so I have downloaded the pattern and see what happens. I am looking forward to the gauge math tutorial, I know a bit about it but refresher would be great. Thank you for your visit, take care.
Thank you so much Marie. What a great idea to practice the reverse purl - you would get a lot of opportunity here. :)
Tash , have a look at the moby sweater junior - the largest size is 33.5 inches. I’ve seen other podcasters make this size with body and sleeve length mods - turned out well .
Thank you so much Rhonda. I am a Petite Knit Junior convert! :)
I am always amazed at your knitting and wonder how you manage to get so much done? It takes me months to finish a sweater even knitting as much as time allows every day. Any secrets to getting things done quickly ? Or is it that some people knit faster than others?
Hi Diane - I think multi-tasking and making the most of every opportunity. Being able to knit without looking is really helpful. It also depends on the seasons of life. My children are at the age where they can make their own lunches and help with the cooking now. :)
Thank you so much for all the information its so helpful and a tutorial would be great as I've only after many years of not knitting started again. Always knit with two needles flat and joined everything at the end never did swatches or blocking. What size of a swatch would you recommend before starting your project. Thank you again. Love seeing all your projects.😊
Thank you so much Heather. I usually knit a swatch at least 6 inches wide (or what i expect will be 6 inches). I like to have a clear 4" for measuring.
A lot of people bought the Moby sweater in children for an adult who doesnt need so much positive ease. Just FYI. Love your channel.
Thank you so much Sophie. I am going with all the Junior patterns now if they exist! :)
I'd LOVE a pickup and % tutorial!!!
Thank you so much Christine. I should be able to get that out within the next few weeks. :)
@@mostlyknitting No rush, as time permits. Sending you healing, positive thoughts from the Pacific Northwest ✨️
Lovely knits thank you. Just a question about swatching, do you knit a swatch flat or in the round?
Hi Angela. I just knit my swatches flat. My gauge doesnt change enough for me to bother doing them in the round - at least for my tension. Which i am grateful for as it is a pain to do it in the round!
I always learn something and get inspired watching you. I have a question, I do not have a lot of experience with hand dyed yarn and alternating yarns. You mentioned with the Sellwood Tee that you will alternate yarn once you start working flat, but didn't while working in the round. Do I only need to alternate yarns when working flat?
Hi Carrie. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I usually only alternate skeins for the last 10 grams of one skein and the first 10 grams of the second. If they are reasonably closely matched, this is usually enough to prevent a line at the change of skeins. It is easy to alternate when knitting flat as you just do it at the end of a row and there will be a pick up or a seam along that line so you never see the edge stitch or any potential puckering or gauge changes that can happen at times. When knitting in the round, I like the yarn forward method. This video has a good demonstration th-cam.com/video/ZIchaWb9rI4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-ziwQ44VRuzVzIOA
@@mostlyknitting Thank you, very helpful as I am just about to start a project with some hand dyed yarn.
Beautiful job on the Shore tee. I like your ballet neck better than the smaller neck on the pattern. I used to agonize over whether blues or blacks matched when I dressed for work, but they're really hard to match, even if they're part of a 2-piece suit. When I saw the Margaux pattern made up by Those Twins Who Knit, the top is very broad across the front of the shoulders, causing it to bunch in a fold at the front of the arm, because it doesn't seem to be curved in at the front of the armhole. That may also be a function of a stitch that is very stretchy widthwise. The neckline you made on the Shore tee would be lovely on the Margaux top. Do you pick up stitches on a neckline differently along a curve? If you want the neckline to curve toward the body, wouldn't you want fewer stitches in the ribbing there?
Thank you so much Jillian. When i say i pick up "more" stitches on the diagonal, i mean more stitches per row. Just because for the same number of rows, it is longer in length than going up vertical. So it isnt really more sts for the length. I hope that makes sense. :)
Tash now that I have finished watching your podcast and you mentioned Fairisle knitting, I was wondering if you have a separate tutorials channel and how do I find it please?
Hi Marie. I dont have a separate channel for tutorials. They are on this channel but I do have a playlist for them. Here is a link. th-cam.com/play/PLBTxvpVTADmRGT7_hAjjeAjPYDNpBQjO7.html&si=NuzuHwYCuJ82pfyc
Hey, you mentioned in another episode that you quit smoking cigarettes years ago I’m having trouble quitting and really want to know how you did it. If there’s any advice you can offer me I’d be forever grateful to thank you for all that you do. Love your podcast.
Hi there. For me, i gave up once i started having children. That was a strong motivator as i had all this time off when i was pregnant and then wouldnt smoke around my children. There became less and less opportunity and the desire just faded away.
With alcohol, i had to challenge my beliefs around what i thought it provided. Allen Carr has a number of "Easy Way" to quit books. One on alcohol helped me. Perhaps one on smoking might help you.
Well done on fighting to quit. I fought with alcohol for a long time before i finally quit but i never gave up trying. Finally i got there. For me, i prayed about it a lot as well. Mindfulness around the activity is really important. Thinking about the choice rather than being on auto-pilot. Not sure if any of that helps but good on you for challenging yourself. Never give up trying. You are worth it!
Hi Tash, my ears pricked up when you were talking about your garter stitch rounds on your Clay sweater. I’m knitting the Feldspar top that has the same ridged row and I can’t get rid of the jog when I start the next round. I’ve treated it like stripes but it still looks a mess. Knitting in cotton/linen. How did you handle that please?
Hi Jenny
The Clay sweater pattern has these slipped stitches on the sides which help to hide the jog at the start of round when you switch stitches. Does the Feldspar top pattern have anything like that?
@@mostlyknitting oh I see what you mean and no the Feldspar has nothing but I’ve looked at all the other photos on Ravelry but apart from a couple who jogged it there seems to be no issue mentioned 🥺 it’s bottom up and now I’m at the armhole and really don’t want to start again. I’m kicking myself for not adding an edge which would have been a easy solution. Feeling really dumb now. I might try possibly fixing it from behind. Your Shore Tee looks marvelous under the jacket (and on it’s own) Great video today thanks
As a very petite woman, I actually buy the Petite Knits Junior patterns and have much better fit
Thank you so much for the suggestion. I am converted! :)
If I can recommend something, when you have extra leftover scraps that is causing too much clutter, if they are made of natural materials, you can compost them and bury them with a bit of soil on top in the garden. I’ve done that and I found that eventually the material breaks down and becomes part of the soil. I’ve also done that with knits that I wore out and couldn’t repair.
Or another fun idea may be to make small ornaments like little hats or sweaters for Christmas tree. Or to donate them. That will eat up some leftovers 😊
@LidijasOriginals much better idea. You can also donate to nursing homes and Senior Centers for those that yarn craft. They love it! I also make scrappy socks and Musselburgh Hats with my various leftovers. Lots of uses for it besides burying and wasting perfectly good yarns!
Thank you for the great suggestions Lidija. All of those ideas will do more good than just cramming them in an overflowing tub. ;)
@@stitchy_linnI should clarify, I only composted yarn that was attacked by moths, or when it keeps breaking, and couldn’t be salvaged
Really love your podcasts… when you say a yarn is hard on your hands i’m wondering just what you mean. How does it manifest itself with you. Id really like to know as my hands are hurting (one finger and my right thumb) and am wondering if its because ive been knitting with Rowan Cotton Revive and wonder if its causing the pain in my hands.
Hi Elizabeth. That's a great question and I realise I am saying hands but i really mean a number of muscles and joints. My forearms and shoulders seem to cop it the worst due to body tension when there is no or little elasticity in the yarn. My hands also start to ache when i knit with plant materials for too long or if i am knitting something really tight like socks for too long. Switching to a wool blend for a while does the trick as I dont feel any tension when i knit at normal tension on a sweater out of wool or a wool blend. :)
Yes, there is something about cotton that creates extra tension in my hands… not necessarily the rest of my body. I knit English style as I think you do as well and this recent pain seems to be in my left pointer finger and after analysing my movements I use my pointer a lot to guide my right hand needle through the loops…if that makes sense. I wish I could alter my style of knitting however it has served me well as I knit quite quickly with very even stitches…very hard to teach an old dog (71 years and counting) new tricks. Btw…my hands dont hurt while im knitting it more like later in the night. “Suck it up princess” This is what I tell myself !!!!!!! Ha ha ha
