Great breakdown of a technique I saw for the first time yesterday! I am a beginner at age 71 and was fortunate to have been able to participate briefly with a fellow learning movements for his 2nd degree brown belt. After seeing it and trying it for the first time, I knew that I had to learn it! Your explanation is nearly identical to how it was performed in our class. Thank you very much!

That's truly incredible that you're training as a beginner at 71 - so impressive! While the way I demonstrate Entwined Lance in this video isn't the traditional ideal phase of the self-defense technique, I find it to be a more practical approach.

Excellent Sifu Jamie 👍🏾 I like that entwine lance technique!! There’s a lot going on with that move, but it’s very effective. The control, the grab and ripping the face, and off balance, is the element of surprise.

Thanks for your kind words. In my view, the standard version of using a two-finger eye poke while balancing on one leg and losing control of the knife is dangerous. When dealing with a knife, we need to control the weapon, disarm it, and then use our technique, and avoid switching our arms back and forth while the opponent still has control of the knife.

Best version I've seen so far from the pure Kenpo crowd 💥

I like the adjustments. One should be aware that many knives are double-edged. The disarm should not involve any potential edge of the blade.

Very good ! Practicing Kenpo for 30 years and other disciplines.
Question is this the attach has intention, that almost makes it easy ,my thought is what do you do with the guy that's holding a knife and is intent on fencing and moving erratically, how would you handle the knife attack in that situation

Great question. None of this is easy, which is why I like to show different approaches to how these lance techniques are usually taught in the ideal phase. Controlling the opponent with the weapon is key. If we lose control, I might try to immediately take away the opponent's offense by breaking the elbow and then trying to disarm the weapon assuming they still have it. Striking the opponent over and over (even with checking) is not a great idea if we cannot control and disarm the weapon because the longer the attacker has the weapon, the greater the odds we will be severely cut.

Very good ! My thought is on wepon control would you consider doing a "four-directional throw" in aikijujitsu it's referred to as a she-ho nagi , to bring your opponent down to the ground before you actually disarm him?

That is a great question. Yes, we do that a lot in Modern Arnis. I just tried to keep within the Entwined Lance framework.
