I have a biracial daughter with 3 different kinds of curls. The back like a white hair, with thick curls. The middle is more like a black hair with thight curls, and the front is more of a mixed hair of thin and medium, any suggestions?
This is so cool, my mother actually got looser curls after chemo so I'm trying to find products for her as well. our bodies are so resilient and interesting.
I have thin wavy hair that’s also fine. The Curlsmith lotion did nothing for me, but the proteins in the aqua gel work really well. The best thickener I have found is the Ouidad Out of Thin Hair jelly.
Great video. After watching your channel I tried the Not Your Mother's Mousse and love it. Thank you so much. I have not used mousse in more than 20 years and would never have tried it without seeing your videos.
Gena, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your videos and amazing knowledge :) My hair is fine and very dense so this video has helped me more than you will ever know. The Umberto Giannini has brought my hair back to life after using heavy, creamy and buttery products. I cannot believe the difference. Thank you so so much! I am truly grateful.
Infusium 23 leave in+ small amount of the scalp care curlsmith jelly has done wonders for me! I stopped using mousse. I wrap my hair in a towel for like 5 min and spritz with some water. Put the product in, and wrap in microfiber towel. And diffuse after about 20. I tried the kitsch strengthening shampoo and conditioner bars (rice protein) and my hr has looked amazing. I have either thin or fine hair. I don’t know which.
I have super fine, medium density hair, high porosity hair. You got me on the Malibu C shampoo and the AG Effects ReCoil Activator Curling Creme and I love it. My 3b/ 3C/ 4a curls now clump and coil up so beautifully. Im back to find a high hold gel. Thank you!🎉❤❤❤
My hair is fine and I’m usually a mouse kind of gal but lately I’ve been using Ouai curl cream and I love it. It’s very thick and Ithought for sure it would weigh my hair down but it doesn’t
The Tracy Ellis styling Custard is the only product you need! I have tried them all and this stuff works without weighing hair down or making it crispy. You have to try!
I was just about to head out to get hair stuff and came to your channel to look at your old lists and saw you uploaded a new video lol Watching this first before I head out.
I’d like to see a video on the mousse you mentioned that was difficult to know how much to use. I have fine low density, thinning due to age, and have been wanting to explore mousse as a new option
I tried JessiCurl's gel and everytime my curls were dried out and I didn't know what to do! I never thought about using a curl cream before applying the gel! I'll test it out! Thank you so much!
Yes! Please do a video with the new innersense foam! I have tried it twice and both times ended up with way too much of a cast. I paired it with the AG curl fresh definer which was a mistake lol. I can't remember the other combo, I just know it was a cream & a gel the 1st time.
I love your hair! And I've been watching another TH-cam channel that I like, but your hair seems a little more like mine, and i like all the info and docent things you suggest for different types of hair! I'm going to try some AG products next payday! Thank you!!!
Great tutorial! And thanks to you I able to transition my curls and silvers!❤ I have the 3 L's 😅 my go to is CS moisturizer label or protein. My bangs and crown r coarse. Bounce curl not my thing I like their hair tools. I will love to see a Innersence review for my hair type. Just received Twist clarifying as a low budget. I'll keep you posted how that went. Appreciate your hard work!
I really love this video. You and your hair are so pretty. If you don’t mind me asking, what hair cut do you ask your hairdresser for. Thanks Gena. Blessings from the U.K. xxxx
The new innersense foam is very tricky. I am still working on finding the right combo. I have found for this product the wetter my hair the better when applying
I would love a full video featuring the Innersense foam! I've been wanting to try it and would definitely appreciate a tutorial. I've also been loving the Rizos Curls hairspray, have you tried it?
Great video! I have 2c to 3a hair and it's most probably thin. I always struggle with maintaining the structure and volume of my curls/waves. Should I use leave in, gel AND mousse or just one or two products at the same time? I am afraid that too much will weigh down or destroy my hair structure. Thxx in advance!
When i go thru all these steps, my hair looks great for 1 day, then after sleeping its all fuzzed. I use coconut oil and castor oil. I let it air dry, then smooth the top crown with a flat iron, leave the back curly if I want or smooth it too. I can go a week without washing. You just have to play with the correct amount...dont overdo it, but if you do, fix it by blow drying a bit.
Wow…that little fine-medium-density-brown curly head is full of curly girl fact and knowledge!! Bam, every fact you ever wanted to know about curly hair in one video👍☮️💕💋 PS - Your curls are looking bomb-tastic!!
Great video...thank you! I love the Not Your Mother's Mousse. I have type 2c, fine/medium, high porosity hair. The mousse gives me so much volume. I have found that I definitely need a cream under it or my hair becomes dry and brittle (which is why I haven't used it in awhile). What cream would you recommend under this mousse?
Mine is going gray and thinning. I also don't have interest in applying so many steps to my hair. I have some nice curl areas, just fuzz areas, and some in between. I use small amount coconut oil on my wet hair, comb it thru then let it air dry. Any of my fuzzy areas get smoothed out with a flat iron or curling iron for bigger smooth curls or lift.
I have medium texture low density hair. My hair does not respond well to either aloe or protein in my stylers. I am currently using kinky curly knot today with curl smith hydro style flexi jelly. With great results.
Super helpful video! Have you tried the Rizo’s Curl mousse? Also do you have any tips on how to take product out of the hair if you have applied to much? I notice that with foams and mousses it is easy for me to overapply and it makes my hair super foamy. Would you suggest using a wet towel to take product out or should I rinse off the hair in the shower?
I recently tried Boucleme foam. Came out more like a mousse, didn't like hiw it felt whle distributing thru the hair. But volume and no frizz factor were great. My definition was good initially but fell out pretty early in the day. Also felt a bit drying. Will try again with more moisturizing leave in and a strong hold gel. And see. Not in the drugstore category though.... More on the expensive side.
Everyone keeps talking about humidity which is a big problem for me in the summer….. I live in minnesota and 9 months of the year it’s cold and dry out. My hair with completely fall the minute I walk outside in the cold. I need something that works for that, PLEASE 🙏
Hi! Sorry I'm commenting because I have straightish hair but my partner has I would say 3a hair which is very very find and easily weighed down. I want to find something for him that is really really easy, so maybe only one product. His hair frizzes a little but can get greasy easily. And on brushing, his hair loses all the curl definition. So would using just a mousse or just a gel work? Or does he need a full routine to a- get the definition b- keep the definition without the hair getting weighed down.
Hi Gena, I have thin gray hair; it only looks good on wash day. I use a satin pillowcase, but my hair is kinky and curly the next day. I use a cream, gel, and mousse, but my hair just won't behave! HELP
@genamarie HALP!! No matter what product combo I use or how much I clean my scalp I’m getting horrible flakes by day 2. I’ve tried so many products and cleansers. 😢 what am I doing wrong. I’m also experiencing a ton of hair loss. I have fine low density hair. I used to have medium density but since the hair loss I feel like I barely have hair now
Anyone knows about a good conditioner that doesnt weight down? My fine low density hair gets tangled easily after a shower and its almost impossible to brush it…
I have fine, low density, low porosity, virgin hair. Wash/Conditioner Mop Top or L’Oreal Elvive For clarifying: Undo Goo followed by SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Treatment Masque Jamaican Black Castor Oil For Dry Hair Paraben Free Hair Mask Leave In Blueberry Bliss, AG Recoil Styling (Depending on Climate/humidity) Mop Top Curl Custard and/or TRELUXE Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel ALWAYS: Rock Hard Gelee (I must have hard hold) Top off with CurlSmith Bonding Oil I hate NYM (feels gross) and can not use most of CurlSmiths products. The scent free leaves me stringy and the scented knocks me over.
Is that hairspray from Bounce Curl considered a working or finish hairspray? I bought a non aerosol working, that was recommended by another influencer. She sprays it on her wet hair before diffusing. I tried it and didn't like the way my hair felt afterwards. I don't like throwing stuff away, I wonder if I were to use it as a styler would be better.🤔
It depends on how much you use. It gives an extreme cast so perhaps it would be considered a finisher. However if you don't use too much and jut spritz some on wet hair, you can still get some flexibility.

I have low porosity hair but my skin is sensitive to sulphates. Is there a chelating shampoo out there that is sulfate free? Just one wash with a sulphate shampoo leaves my scalp itchy for over a week 😢
@GenaMarie - What are your thoughts on Aveda products? I used to use Aveda a lot and love the products but I'm not sure what to use (if any) since my hair has increased its curl (From a slight wave)
They contain rice amino acids or keratin amino acids, and rice extract which are not whole proteins. Amino acids are the "building blocks" of protein and are able to penetrate deeper into the hair, making them suitable for all hair types and won't cause protein buildup. This is different than "rice protein" or "wheat protein" which can cause a stiff/brittle protein-buildup for some hair types like low-porosity+coarse. This is my reasoning for labeling products as protein free versus contains protein because people are looking to see if the product will strengthen and if it will cause protein buildup or not based on their hair type. This blog post has helpful info on the differences between amino acids and protein: science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/mysteries-of-hydrolyzed-proteins.html#google_vignette Bottom line is that the NYM Curl Talk products will provide some strength but are suitable for all and will not cause a buildup of protein (for most).

New curly girl here from chemo. I find this video so helpful and now have a list of products to try! Thank you!!

i hope your chemo journey went well 💗sending love

Great video. After watching your channel I tried the Not Your Mother's Mousse and love it. Thank you so much. I have not used mousse in more than 20 years and would never have tried it without seeing your videos.
Careful...it has protein . It sent me into protein overload .
Most of their products have protein but the mousse does not. Confirmed with NYM. I avoid most of their products due to protein
Good to know! Thx
I could have really used your channel in highschool, it would have saved me so many bad hair days 😊 Another great video, stay sweet 😍

Suggestion for a video: your #1 fave go to curly hair routine w steps and products 🙏🏼
Wow I’m only 2 minutes in and am getting so much out of this video already. Thanks like always Gena!!!
I love Twist Weather Up gel! I’ve repurchased it more than any. Also on Jessie Curl, if I use Blueberry Bliss leave in prior.. chef’s kiss!
I've been waiting for this video! This is my hair type!
Great video exactly what I needed. Always trying to find the right recipe.

I’d like to see a video on the mousse you mentioned that was difficult to know how much to use. I have fine low density, thinning due to age, and have been wanting to explore mousse as a new option

Your hair is beautiful!!
I tried JessiCurl's gel and everytime my curls were dried out and I didn't know what to do! I never thought about using a curl cream before applying the gel! I'll test it out! Thank you so much!
It doesn’t have any humectants like glycerin is the reason why it dries the hair out over time. I use a moisturizer underneath it really helps
Yes! Please do a video with the new innersense foam! I have tried it twice and both times ended up with way too much of a cast. I paired it with the AG curl fresh definer which was a mistake lol. I can't remember the other combo, I just know it was a cream & a gel the 1st time.

Love this video so informative. Thank you
I really love this video. You and your hair are so pretty. If you don’t mind me asking, what hair cut do you ask your hairdresser for. Thanks Gena. Blessings from the U.K. xxxx
I just get a regular wet cut. I ask for a blunt cut with no layers to maintain fuller ends
Innersense video is coming next! I have not tried the Rizos spray
Great video! I have 2c to 3a hair and it's most probably thin. I always struggle with maintaining the structure and volume of my curls/waves. Are you using a gel? I don't recommend just using an oil on your hair and no styling products if you want long-lasting frizz protection.
I love your videos!!! They always help me a lot! Please try the Innersense foam- I’m on the fence on getting it
Excellent video. Full of information. Thank you.
Wow…that little fine-medium-density-brown curly head is full of curly girl fact and knowledge!! Bam, every fact you ever wanted to know about curly hair in one video👍☮️💕💋 PS - Your curls are looking bomb-tastic!!
what helps my root lift for now is the powder texture - it adds grit not much needed - many barbers use this for men
Would like more drug store options like walmart where I can just grab quick while getting groceries! Also low in price!
My hair is gray .I kind I need a lot for moisture.but nothing hold my curls .big fizz .Help!!
Mine is going gray and thinning. I also don't have interest in applying so many steps to my hair. I have some nice curl areas, just fuzz areas, and some in between. Great video! So thorough
Clear and informative video 🙌🏻
Love AG Recoil. It never fails me.
So helpful. Thanks.
Love all your videos!! Have you tried any of the Odelle products? I am curious to know how they work
Great Video. Hope you do video for other hair types.
Ty so much this really helped me
I have medium texture low density hair. My hair does not respond well to either aloe or protein in my stylers. I am currently using kinky curly knot today with curl smith hydro style flexi jelly. With great results.
I have the same issue but kinky curly has aloe. I have tried it but it doesn’t work for me at all
No aloe in the leave in the gel has aloe and I get instant flash drying with that
I loooove knot today, my go to fav
Exactly what I was hoping for, thanks Gena!🥰
I love your videos! I think you are my hair twin! I found a holy grail gel that I keep coming back to. Amika Curl Corps. So good! Have you tried it?
i used to love it! Its great. its just been awhile since i used it
Use Wen! it’s best for my fine curls
As a hair spray I do like B&B and the new CS hair spray
Super helpful video! Have you tried the Rizo’s Curl mousse? Also do you have any tips on how to take product out of the hair if you have applied to much? I notice that with foams and mousses it is easy for me to overapply and it makes my hair super foamy. Would you suggest using a wet towel to take product out or should I rinse off the hair in the shower?
No, I haven't tried it. You can spray your hair with water and then scrunch with a hair towel to soak up the excess.
I have coarse low density hair but apparently that's very normal for redheads according to my stylist
BOTH InnerSense foam reviews please... The Definition foam is SO HARD HOLD.. i have been trying mixing them.
Coming next Sunday!
I recently tried Boucleme foam. Came out more like a mousse, didn't like hiw it felt whle distributing thru the hair. But volume and no frizz factor were great. I have extremely fine but high porosity hair, any recommendations for products that are moisturizing but not heavy?
Everyone keeps talking about humidity which is a big problem for me in the summer….. I live in minnesota and 9 months of the year it’s cold and dry out. My hair with completely fall the minute I walk outside in the cold. I need something that works for that, PLEASE 🙏
I just posted a video for dry cold weather!
How often do you use leave in?
What’s the name of the Twist one?
can you do the same video for thick coarse and dry hair ?
Hi!

at what point do you use a heat protectant if youre diffusing

Try Giovanni 50/50 shampoo and conditioner it was a game changer for me!
Funnily enough my mom is the one that put me on the Not Your Mother’s brand 😂
Did you get invisilign? Just wondering because i had it years ago and i recognized the slight lisp 😊
Yes haha I don't know why it was bothering my so much this day when usually I can prevent the lisp haha 🫣
Anyone knows about a good conditioner that doesnt weight down? My fine low density hair gets tangled easily after a shower and its almost impossible to brush it…
I have fine, low density, low porosity, virgin hair.

Can you elaborate on the protein/porosity comment? Does high porosity = need more protein?
Nvm! I picked it up later in the video!
I have low porosity hair but my skin is sensitive to sulphates. Is there a chelating shampoo out there that is sulfate free? Just one wash with a sulphate shampoo leaves my scalp itchy for over a week 😢
Yes, the Malibu C ones are sulfate free amzn.to/3KNPmcY
Super new to styling curls. Do you use all these diff things together (gel, mousse, sprays, etc) or do you pick one? I’m so confused. 😭
I just use a curl cream and a gel. Some people like to layer for extra hold but I don’t find it necessary and like to keep it simple
@GenaMarie - What are your thoughts on Aveda products? I used to use Aveda a lot and love the products but I'm not sure what to use (if any) since my hair has increased its curl (From a slight wave)
how about frizzy hair
I have wet frizz what should I do?😢
She already has done videos on that. Check the lists
My hair does not do well with glycerin at all. The majority of these products do have it.
It could be just that you need stronger hold. Do you use a strong hold gel?
Has not your mother deep conditioner been discontinued?
I think so :(
The curl talk by not your mother is literally advertised as with protein
They contain rice amino acids or keratin amino acids, and rice extract which are not whole proteins. Amino acids are the "building blocks" of protein and are able to penetrate deeper into the hair, making them suitable for all hair types and won't cause protein buildup. Bottom line is that the NYM Curl Talk products will provide some strength but are suitable for all and will not cause a buildup of protein (for most).
