    Many people ask if I draw from references - In this video, I unpack how I work with reference photographs, why failure has its uses, and how the process influences the final image. I hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes look into my studio and practice.

    1. I would love to see how you map out the large line and shape drawing on your paper before you shade and add detail.
    2. How to take a water splash reference photo. What shutter speed etc How you make selfies.
    3. How you finish, fix and hang such large works

      The idea of drawing or painting originally was to reproduce visually the world around them and that and artist can scale up these 'photos' still makes the art form of drawing and painting simply for reproduction (and often as is the case here, more) very valid.

    • @JJ-dc3jz
      @JJ-dc3jz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheCompleteGuitarist No, drawing as a source of collage, using photos, is lame. Collage has already been done with photos. Why then go the long way around and do it with drawing? You're just slapping images together and redrawing. Where's the creativity in that?

      Drawing is about the end product. NOT the process.
      Most people who might buy your art work don't give a shit how you made it as long as it looks impressive on their wall,
      If you think Vermeer and David and Ingres and Raphael and any of the renaissance artists did not use optical devices to aid them in the production of their art work then you are misguided.
      People commissioning wanted an end product, they didn't care what route you took.
      Ultimately that is what is creative. How well you convey your creative message, not how you actually made it.

    • @salbut1
      @salbut1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@JJ-dc3jz tell da vinci and michelangelo that its lame that their drawings and paintings are based on a copy of what they see. no matter if its a photo or a model sitting in front of you - filling an empty canvas or piece of paper based on whatever you see by using a pencil is kind of art, wouldnt you agree? if its so lame, please do it.

    • @JJ-dc3jz
      @JJ-dc3jz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@salbut1
      You don't understand what you're talking about.
      There were no cameras around then!!! You cannot compare DaVinci & Michelangelo's work process to the modern Artist using a camera as an aid.
      You only had your eyes in DaVinci & Michelangelo's time to replicate how people look....there were no cameras to catch a person's likeness to work from.
      THAT MEANS THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAY TO COPY A PERSON'S LIKENESS....which was via a direct EYE TO ARTISAN HANDS-ON method....i.e: drawing/painting/sculpture.
      Cameras first came along for sale around 1888. DaVinci lived between 1452-1519 & Michelangelo 1475-1564.
      With a Photograph.... the image can be taken at 3pm in direct sunlight, out in the open, and yet still, you can be copying that photo at 3am in your dark studio with wind and rain outside.
      In DaVinci & Michelangelo's time you didn't have the benefit of a Model in the exact pose you wanted at your fingertips 24/7.
      In DaVinci & Michelangelo's you couldn't capture and freeze motion like you can with a camera. You had to guess what motion looked like only using your eyes...which wasn't the best detector of motion and freezing it.
      It wasn't until 1877, that Eadweard Muybridge took a series of photos PROVING that Horses DO Gallop with all four feet in the air at times, something DaVinci and Michelangelo would have no idea was true because prior to that, Artists displayed Horses with at least one foot on the ground at all times because they thought the horse would fall if that at any time the horse had all four feet in the air.
      So in the modern era, taking a picture/photograph and having it sit in your Studio while you copy it, is completely different and gives today's artist a huge advantage over DaVinci and Michelangelo, who never had that luxury.
      But to now take a photograph or photographs, splice them together and recreate the images together PHOTOREALISTICALLY is crazy. The camera already does that. No need for humans to then try to go backwards and BECOME a camera.
      But what a Camera CANNOT do, is have a message, an opinion, a painterly style, a drawing style that shows a human did this with feelings, hopes and dreams, and not a machine.
      And that is Real Art. Created by humans, with a humane touch. Giving us an insight into the lives of the Artist, how they lived, what they felt, what they believed in.
      We can all sit there for the rest of our lives working on our drawing technique until we could all photorealistically capture any object...but what does that say about OUR time on Earth.
      Absolutely nothing. That's the job of Camera. To make cold, hard copies of the world.

    Wonderful explanation of the process. I use very few references except my own observations, or remembrances of past drawings, for most of my work. I enjoy the struggle and internal test to remember the minute details and the subtle changes in form and textures, and building them as I "see them" as opposed to exactly how they may be in reality. Maybe I am simply trying to up my observation-game and collect data as a visual. Like many, I have a near-photographic memory, and a keen sense of recall, so my challenge is allowing it all to come together and appear on the paper.

It is next to impossible for me to feel exited about anything seeing that the pituitary controls so many chemicals in the body. I am nowhere in any form to compare what you do with mine , nor do I think anyone can but I think at any level we can feel the hope and possibilities of creating something new. Thank you so much! I love watching you work but these "behind the scenes" videos are real gems. You are an amazing artist and from these little glimpses I think an amazing person too. Thanks for sharing a little bit of your life and work with us mere mortals. Oh and your voice... 💜

    So much of what Jono says it just as applicable to writing and making art in other mediums as it is to drawing.

    Love, love, love your work. It's brilliant and your generosity is above and beyond generous. Thank you, you are a special young man. I am Nanny Gayle and I hope I still have enough time to learn even a few of your amazing techniques.

    Love your artwork brotha! I’ve been a photographer for over ten years who’s trying to learn to draw now. I agree 100% with what you mentioned about the natural movements between poses being the best shots. I always chose to have models move more freely & sometimes people would mock the idea by everyone always loved the results because it captures unique moments, emotions & expressions that you wouldn’t get if you were carefully only taking precisely posed shots one at a time. I’d take hundreds, sometimes thousands of photos in a shoot & only use a few. (Much easier with no flash in natural lighting)

    Thanks so much your videos are always very helpful,
    We would love to hear you explain
    1) The key points in lighting for photography
    2) How to transfer proportions to such a large paper
    3) Why don't you use black acrylic for background, it doesn't shine,
    4) Know the feeling when you are tired of the particular drawing, and just want to start a new one?
