Fire rips through abandoned Tacoma school building | drone footage

Crews with the Tacoma Fire Department responded to a large fire at the former Gault Middle School early Wednesday morning. Officials arranged for a demolition crew to come to the school Wednesday afternoon after the department declared an emergency; the building was unsafe.
The fire was still smoldering Thursday-despite demolition and rain-and residents in the area were asked to keep doors and windows closed to avoid any smoke still coming from the large fire. Fire crews are expected to be at the site through Thursday working on hot spots, and once the fire department leaves, the Tacoma School District will be responsible for the rest of the demolition.
The once majestic school was built in the 1920s. But when enrollment declined in the early 2000s, the Tacoma School District closed it. It’s been abandoned as a school since 2009. It stood empty, except for trespassers, which neighbors tell KOMO News happened often.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
