Until they add more games to it and new features it may get boring but you will have a lot of fun with it. I payed £130 for it and it is quite expensive but still it's a great little toy. I've learned my BB-3 to patrol without bumping into things and it looks like it's aware of objects somehow (the device has no sensors as far as I'm aware) but it's impressive. I would recommend it if it was slightly cheaper or in the future when it has a lot more to offer.

I'm a keen multi-rotor pilot and so was very interested when they announced the Millenium Falcon Quad-copter but at a price tag of £100 ($153) for something that uses the same electronics as a $25 conventional quad? I'll pass. I think there'll definitely be a disturbance in the Force as we run up to Christmas and we see the same chaos as we did with the Cabbage Patch Dolls as anything Star Wars related becomes the must have gift. I wasn't a super fan of that little droid when I saw him in the trailer, but that little RC version of him is kind of cute. I feel like my problem with the droid itself is that it's been made for the sole purpose of being cute and nothing else. Like, I love cute shit, more than anything, but I much prefer something to be cute AND have a purpose, ya know? Like, R2 became this cute character, but he was a character before that on his own who also happened t be cute. This character was designed to sell merch and I'm not down with that. Ruins what little integrity Star Wars has left XD I'm not hating on Star Wars neither, I'mma still go see the new movie and I'm pro'lly gonna enjoy it to, just food for thought.
Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow and I can't wait. Honestly, I checked out the Target version of the BB-8 droid which is larger and about half the price and it is kind of garbage by comparison. The controls aren't nearly as responsive and its movements are very clunky. From all the videos i've seen about THIS BB-8 it seems to move along pretty well once you master the controls and he's got personality which is what I care about most.
Fun fact: The people of Sphero (who made that toy and a similar ball robot a few years ago) were hired by Lucasfilm to design the BB-8 droid for the film. The toy is pretty much a scaled-down version of the movie's version made by a company that specializes in sphere-shaped robots.
The down side for me was the fact the sounds play from the phone. I think having the unit make the sounds itself would add that last bit of realness to it. But apart from that, I love mine!
I had one of the original R2-D2, remote controlled toys. Had a lot of fun with it, wish I kept it boxed, would be able to afford college with the ebay money I'm sure. I also had the plastic scale model AT-AT with the light up guns. Both lost in the sands of time.
You can look it up on youtube. This kind of robot is actually a military tool for use by swat and tactical teams for surveillance and infiltration. A lot of what we use in our everyday lives were originally designed and used as weapon systems.
Technically they didn't build the free roaming remote control version until after the movie had wrapped. What you will see in the film is a series of practical puppets operated the old fashioned way or remote control puppets with much less mobility. This might be a good thing because the free roaming versions, including this toy you bought, always seem to be a slightly drunk version of BB-8.
