Leveling a single high fret. Learn to do it yourself. + 18 minutes of my annoying nasal voice.

  • Learn to work on your guitars. Keep money in your pocket. Off the shelf tools only. Today we will tackle a single high fret causing some serious fret buzz. Starting with an attempt to tap down and reseat then eventually leveling, slight recrowning and polishing. This is a ten year old Warmoth Stratocaster I built, sold, tracked down and baught back just recently. Stainless steel 6105 frets. Besides, what else is there to do at 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning in a cold ass garage?

    So glad you said you'll try to tap it down first. I think that's a major issue, especially with inexpensive new guitars. People think they have one problem when it's another.

      Yeah my Epiphone LP needed a few fretts tapped down after playing for a little while.

    Actually, this is helpful. You cannot be too careful filing frets. If it gets too low, then you have to go and make the frets towards the body lower to compensate. So thanks!

    Generally, if you have to tap it down, you’ll need to put some glue in, usually thin super glue. If you don’t they just end up back up again. Will also hold in place solidly if you do have to do some filing.

    Helpful video. The 11th fret on my Squire is high. I’ve never worked on a guitar. I bought a cheap squire figuring I could tinker with it to learn. This was very helpful. Thanks

    Is there any need to straighten out the neck completely so that you have an even plane before doing the spot-leveling?

  • @paulyoung4781

    Wow I have 4 rocking fretts thinking just leveling all my fret board off be easier than doing one ftrett a time! Can it cause frett buzz all up and down kneck high fretts

    • @therangersinger
      @therangersinger  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depending on how worn all of your frets are in general it may be better to level all of them. But if that is the case you will be recrowning all of them as well. It can be fun work if you take your time especially knowing your guitar will play easier afterward. A single high fret could cause fret buzz on one string or multiple strings if it is near the bottom of the neck. Especially if it is very high and your saddle height is very low. I like to keep my action very low. I always have. So there are times I don't mind a little frett buzz but if it kills the note then it is a problem.

      @@therangersinger thank u so much buddy I am going to take the time one day this week and just take the whole day and do the whole frett board levelled out probably be the best option and for the long run too it looks a great job and knowing that the outcome will be,I have 3rd frett and 5th and 8th and 9th fretts that's high and my low E A D strings buzz madly all over the kneck haha so definitely needs leveling would u say haha

    What type of file do you use for frets?

      That particular file I was using was actually an old diamond coated knife sharpener. Has always worked good for me.

    What If we had a one fret that lower the others ?

    • @therangersinger
      @therangersinger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would require a single frett to be replaced or you can level the entire fretboard. That will also require the nut slots to be lowered depending on how much lower that single fret is and how much you have to level the other frets to match up to it's height.

      @@everythingpotatoversion1201 haha, i understand your hesitancy to do it on your newer or more expensive guitar. A little goes a long way so maybe you can be gentle with it and see if it is easy to knock it down slightly or worst case. A local guitar shop shouldn't charge much for knocking some high fretts down. Of course that all depends on how much they charge versus how much you paid for the guitar in the first place. What brand and model of guitar is it that you are hesitant to work on?
