Summer School: The Best 80s Comedy You Never Saw?

  • Hollywood spent a couple of years trying to make Mark Harmon happen as a movie star. Fresh off an arc on "St. Elsewhere" which infamously had his character contract AIDS from a one-night stand, his career was red hot. For a while, he was seriously considered to replace Don Johnson on "Miami Vice" after contract negotiations fell through, and in 1987-88, we got a bunch of starring vehicles that would try him out in a variety of genres to see if one would stick. He did action in THE PRESIDIO (even doing his own stunts - although the film was stolen by co-star Sean Connery), drama in STEALING HOME, and zany comedy in this week's film, SUMMER SCHOOL.
    Directed by Carl Reiner, this was another youth-oriented comedy featuring a wild cast of characters, not unlike the then-popular POLICE ACADEMY series, albeit done with a lot more style by guys like Reiner and writer Jeff Franklin (famous for creating "Full House"). Harmon was cast against type In a role that seems like it was tailor-made for a guy like Steve Guttenberg, and while not a smash hit, the PG-13 flick grossed a solid $35 million in the U.S, not bad at all and coming in ahead of classics like THE LOST BOYS, PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES, and THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Years later, it's been mostly forgotten but is ripe for rediscovery as we explain on this week's Best Movie You Never Saw which is written and narrated by Chris Bumbray and edited by Edward Clark.

    I would actually put Summer School above Ferris Bueller Day's Off. I think it's criminally underrated and pretty high up on my favorite comedies in general.

    Before I even start this video: I want to say, I SAW THIS MOVIE SO MANY TIMES. And love it. I grew up in the 80s as a horror fan and the gore scene was my favorite part of the movie. Which , along with the Nightmare films and such, made me become a horror author. Great times!!

    A *classic.* There's a reason _Summer School_ was a superior '80s comedy: the great Carl Reiner. Watched this on endless repeat as a kid. Mark Harmon will always be Mr. Shoop to me.

      Howard Gremp had some of the best dialogue in the whole movie.
      SCHOOL PRINCIPAL: You're Chainsaw's father? I...Interesting boy.
      HOWARD GRIMP: No. you can say it. He's a lunatic.
      CHAINSAW: Daaaaad...
      HOWARD GREMP: You know, six weeks ago, I thought he had the IQ of a salad ball. His only interest in life was to make people sick. If my mother came to dinner, he would give the dog a third eye or an extra leg. Because of him, we stopped having kids. You can imagine the feeling when I saw him studying. The wife and I almost boist into tears.
      DAVE'S MOM: David was doing his homework, too.
      HOWARD GREMP: It makes sense. They share the same brain.

    Written by former teacher turned comedy screenwriter Jeff Franklin who says he actually wrote it FOR Bill Murray, but it ended up going to the much cheaper Mark Harmon. Franklin also wrote the critically underrated gem Just One of The Guys before going on to create the TV show Full House.

    Well, this movie is a 80s classic for me and everybody who grew up in the 80s and 90s in Brazil, because it was on air a lot. I usually recomend it to teachers that i know, just for the last scene, when the director is reviewing the grades, and even though most are still low, they show a superb increase. I love when he says: “Now thats teaching”.

  • @aidenharris4343
    @aidenharris4343 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I wasn’t around to see this when it came out, but I did catch it a decade ago and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Although, I noticed this was missed in the video (which is all good, it happens) the actor who played Alan-the bookworm in the class-that’s Richard Steven Horvitz, he’s done the voices of “Alpha” from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, “Daget” from Angry Beavers, and one of his most iconic: Invader Zim. I grew up with all of these characters he voiced but I’d never once seen him in person, I was floored to realize he was in the film.

    • @williamshaw9047
      @williamshaw9047 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a lot of familiar faces in the movie, like:
      Gary Riley (Charlie Hogan in Stand By Me, the naive stereo customer in Ruthless People)
      Duane Davis (played memorable football players (his dad was in the NFL) in movies like Beetlejuice, The Program, and Necessary Roughness)
      Patrick Labyorteaux (a regular on Little House on the Prairie and also homophobic football player Ram in Heathers)
      Fabiana Ugenio (Alotta Fagina in the first Austin Powers movie)
      Director Carl Reiner has a cameo early in the film as a teacher who wins the lottery on the last day of school and quits, hence Shoop being forced into taking his place teaching summer school)

Goes to show how a brilliant comedy director like Carl Reiner can bring to a formulaic script, and Chainsaw and Dave are two of my favourite film characters of all time!
    It's also funny how the first time I'd ever seen footage from the first two Texas Chainsaw movies was from two of my favourite '80s comedies - this movie and the first Texas Chainsaw and they used clips from the second one in The 'Burbs.

      Shoop is a gym teacher, so he gets pretty much all the students at one point or another, though you'd think he'd remember Chainsaw simply because I'm guessing he was a slacker and kind of a pain in the ass. Then again, Chainsaw may have also been ducking out of gym class after lineup to get high or something, so Shoop didn't recall him doing anything during class. Or it just proves Shoop doesn't take teaching seriously.

    Not sure if it is mentioned in the video yet but Harmon, Kristie Alley, Dean Cameron, and Patrick Labyorteaux, all worked together the year before to this movie on an ABC Network movie called 'Prince of Bel Air'.

    I loved this movie! Back when HBO, Cinemax, TMC, and Showtime showed great movies in the 80's and 90's...

    Never saw? Came out the summer between 9th and 10th grade. Me and my friends saw this multiple times in the theater.

    Little known fact, Shoop was actually a young undercover NCIS agent name Leeroy Jethro Gibbs. It was his first assignment.

    Great review! You make a great point from 5:05 - 5:25 . That's what made this film standout for me as well. If you liked Mark Harmon in this film, I recommend another 80s movie he did with Kirstie Alley called Prince of Bel Air.
