    I'd love to be like this when I reach his age. "Everybody is locked in their bedrooms hooked up to virtual reality servers! Nobody takes the time to type text messages anymore! We used to use emoji's to express subtlety but now we just broadcast our thoughts directly into each other's brains!" Classic.

      *New Message* Though it wasn't George Whashington Carver who invented peanutbutter! He has erroneously gotten the credit for many years.
      The one who in 1884 got the first patent for peanut butter was in fact Marcllus Gilmore Edson.

    Just the other day I was remembering how once when I was in high school (in the '80s) I was at home listening to the Simon and Garfunkel song "So long, Frank Lloyd Wright," and I didn't know who Frank Lloyd Wright was. We didn't have a set of encyclopedias at home, so I went to the library to find out who he was. I'm trying to imagine a teenager today doing that. Even if their smartphone was missing and the internet connection in their house was out, they would think it crazy to go to the library to find out who someone is.

    • @maryanneslater9675
      @maryanneslater9675 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parents need to take their kids to the library and show them how it works. I did it with my kids. If for some reason, the world lost the internet, they'd go get books.
      However, there are also networks of people downloading massive amounts of useful data from the internet and storing them against any sort of apocalypse. Add solar panels, and it's a digital library.

    George Washington Carver is the peanut guy. He was a black agricultural scientist known for his work in the 20's-40's. He was a well connected man and was friendly with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Booker T. Washington, the US Congress, John Harvey Kellogg, Henry Ford, and even Mahatma Gandhi, to whom he sent nutritional bulletins advising him how to build up strength in between his hunger strikes.

  • @nuthinmuffins5073
    @nuthinmuffins5073 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Ahh, thems was the days... all of twenty years ago or so. There's something so perfect about that joke/story. It's bizarre because it really is a huge change in the way people live, and it occurred so recently that you don't have to be very old to feel nostalgia for it. So it makes one feel old long before that should be possible. And then there's just the absurd contrast of life before/without versus life after/with internet and mobile devices. It would be fascinating to have the capacity to view this period of human history from a future perspective, comparing the personal experience of it to the big picture.
    ... Maron is truly an underrated comedian.

    That joke was for me, and it was awesome! And it only got better from there, one of the best interviews I've seen on Colbert yet!

    Man, I was born in 83 so I remember this kind of situation. One time for school I needed to find the word that matched a given definition and the only question I couldn't find was the name of a person who drew maps. We didn't have an encyclopedia set and that section of my dad's huge dictionary (the biggest book we had in my parent's substantial book collection) had had something spilled on it that made the whole page illegible. My mom couldn't remember, my dad couldn't remember, my uncle didn't answer his phone and my grandmother was sleeping and wasn't cogent when she answered. By then it was past 11pm and school started for me at 7:20. Finally, I remembered that in the first scene of the movie "close encounters with the third kind" an actor describes himself as a mapmaker so my mom and I put the vhs on and fast forwarded to the scene where the actor shouted the word we had been serching two hours for: "cartographer!" Life was so much harder pre-Google. Us older millennials remember the struggle.

      I just DEVOURED Glow season 2! What a roller coaster carnival ride! How do you take such a cheesy, goofy concept and make a grown man laugh and cry and forget the troubles of the day with it? I still can't believe I love this show, but I can't wait for season 3 already...

    he's right about the technology, no wonder back then we had more time to spend on our artwork, recipes, music and screenplays and that's why so much of today's media is so sloppy and 1-dimensional
