The cast includes some of the best character actors in the history of Hollywood - Ward Bond (Bert), Henry Travers (Clarence), Beulah Bondi (Ma Bailey), Thomas Mitchell (Uncle Billy) and Lionel Barrymore (Potter). Gloria Grahame (Violet) later won an Academy Award for best supporting actress. She died tragically at the age of 57 from breast cancer. Donna Reed (Mary) later won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in From Here to Eternity and went on to have a successful TV series in the 1960s (The Donna Reed Show).
Child actor Jimmy Hawkins played littleTommy Bailey, sitting on Jimmy Stewart's lap putting tinsel on his head. He's 84 and is maybe one of 2-3 still around who were in the cast. He became a supporting player in many movies and TV shows, even the Donna Reed show [1958-1966]. Was in an Elvis movie.
Its a small town and everybody's in everybody's business. People were walking along the sidewalk and had to stop to see the show between George and Violet. George wasnt into Violet. He was baiting her. He knew shed never go for a nature walk.
I always saw it differently. I always felt George was trying his luck with Violet, but yeah, she's not that kind of girl. That's why he was genuinely embarrassed when he saw everyone was suddenly gathered around and laughing.
This is my father's favorite Christmas film. When the most stressful week in the life of a pastor is the very last week of December, as he's waiting to see if the church subscribed to the budget, seeing everyone come together and give more than enough is a dream come true. There are those who are unhappy that we don't see Mr. Potter get his comeuppance and I have never had to think about it because Charles Dickens did it for us. Mr. Potter is the unredeemed Ebenezer Scrooge, therefore that vision of Christmas Yet to Come that scared Scrooge into repentance is Mr. Potter's fate - to die alone without friends or family present, to be buried in the local cemetery, and then forgotten by time. Furthermore, the film's central thesis is that the universe is governed by a just and loving God, one Mr. Potter will face on Judgement Day.
12:07 The director (Frank Capra) didn't think that the actress playing Mary Hatch (Donna Reed) would be able to hit a window and had someone stationed to break some glass if she missed. It turns out that Donna Reed had been the star pitcher of her school softball team, it was an easy shot for her.
This was Stewart's first film after returning from war service; he had flown a B-24 Liberator in 20 combat missions over Europe. He was still feeling the effects during filming.
At one point Donna Reed wouldn't talk to Jimmy Stewart while filming this picture. Jimmy vowed to never work with her again because he blamed her for the movie flopping at the box office

Many iconic supporting players and bit parts in this movie. The bartender, Sheldon Leonard, became a big time TV show producer. Burt the cop played by Ward Bond, he was in many westerns, esp with John Wayne. The Cab Driver became the ornery father on the sitcom "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" [1959-1963]. Little Tommy Bailey, played by Jimmie Hawkins, as the son of George Bailey sitting on his lap putting tinsel on George's head....he stayed in acting and worked in many movies and sitcoms, including the Donna Reed Show, often played teenager or college type in beach movies etc. Donna Reed gave him a job, must have been great for both of the to be reunited, working together. He's still alive at age 84. Thomas John Mitchell (July 11, 1892 - December 17, 1962) was an Irish-American actor and writer. Among his most famous roles in a long career are those of Gerald O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, Doc Boone in Stagecoach, Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life, and Mayor Jonas Henderson in High Noon. Mitchell was the first male actor to gain the Triple Crown of Acting by winning an Oscar[ movies], an Emmy, [TV] and a Tony Award [Stage].

Yes because if you're going to shoot in b&w good lighting makes a big difference. In my opinion I don't think this film makes much use of that type of camera work. It's just a great story. .
This, groundhog Day, Scrooged, planes trains and automobiles, uncle buck, home alone 1-2, greatest story ever told, Edward scissorhands, Rudolph and Frosty the 60s stop motion cartoons, Charlie Brown Christmas, nightmare before Christmas, Big Fish, groundhog day, miracle on 34th Street, all must watch holiday movies! Jimmy was loaded with PTSD after WW2 and stopped acting. Mr Potter is the Drew Barrymore family patriarch. He convinced Jimmy to do this and Mr Smith goes to Washington. Jimmy said later this movie saved his life! He also flew in Korea and Vietnam, and retired a brigadier general!!😮😮😮😮 For some reason, Mr Gower seems to recognize him.... like the old man in groundhog day! Type in here, SNL skit about Mr Potter gets caught by the townspeople! The 3 youngest children are still alive and zuzu has a house with items from the movie saved up in all the rooms like a museum and u can visit, just like the wizard of Oz house!😮😮😮😮. Also, the cookie Ginger Snaps, was named after the little girl's nickname!
A friend of mine is a therapist. She said "if a person doesn't cry ugly at this movie ending, they will probably collapse someday from stuffed down feelings, or have a real breakdown later in life. HEALTHY people blubber at this." YOU have a perfect reaction, are in touch with your feelings, very nice!
I’m afraid you picked the wrong version. Apparently Amazon has a colorized, abridged version so you’re missing some scenes. When you react to a classic film, please do a bit of research and always choose the intact, original B&W version. Sadly, can’t watch this, too disappointing.
@@LukeLovesRose Check out what lunatic producers and ignorant music industry goons are doing to legendary vocal performances with their asinine "pitch-correction" software ...
While this is colorized, it's not the shortened version that removes the entire part with the Pottersville alternate world. Next time, maybe check things out a little better before whining so hard. Just a thought.
This is a black-and-white movie, but you watched a colorized version. Please don’t do that in the future. Old Hollywood had mastered lighting, and colorization destroys their beautiful use of light and shadow. This is my second favorite film of all time, after “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Capra and Stewart both regarded this as the best film in their careers. Its production was a miracle in itself. The author was Philip Van Doren Stern, a prominent historian and author, who couldn’t sell the short story the movie is based on. So he sent it out to friends as a homemade, illustrated Christmas card. The story captivated Capra, who bought the rights. Stewart had come back from the war as a decorated hero, having led a bomber squadron on some 20 runs over Germany, but he had PTSD and thought he would never act again. Thankfully, his good friend, Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter), talked him into accepting the role. Stewart was drawing on real emotions in his dramatic scenes, especially in the prayer at the bar. Capra’s unmatched ability to move a story smoothly from comedy to drama and back to joy is on fully display in this film. He was aided in this by a tremendous group of character actors who appeared in many of his movies. Thomas Mitchell (Uncle Billy) won an Oscar for his performance in “Stagecoach.” Beulah Bondi (Ma Bailey) was a Broadway star in the 1920s and became a great character actor as she aged. I love her remarkable transformation from a loving mother to a crusty old woman in this film. H. B. Warner (Mr. Gower) was a popular star of the 1920s and also moved into character roles as he aged. He got an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Capra’s “Lost Horizon” (1937). Not to forget Donna Reed (Mary): she played her part so well, I can’t imagine anyone better for the role. She acted in many films in the 40s and 50s, but achieved her greatest fame with a highly successful TV sitcom, “The Donna Reed Show,” which I watched as a kid in the early 60s.
Potter was worse than Scrooge. Scrooge may have been cold and heartless but he was honest. He wouldn't have kept the $8,000. I still hate that someone in the film industry had the idea to colorize these classics. Thank goodness it didn't go over well and was short lived.
The original movie is in black and white. Watching a colorized version cannot improve this film at all. It is about the story, the script, the acting. Same goes for most classic films from the 1930's on that were in black and white..Casablanca, It Happened one Night, High Noon, Citizen Kane, Stalag 17, endless list. But they did good job colorzing this one for sure...the night scenes are barely in color though. Actually you look fabulous in color....
Dude, I don’t watch “reaction” videos from or support those who watch bastardised colourised versions of movies made in and aesthetically grounded in black and white. What’s next, a colourised version of Ansel Adams or a less impressionistic version of a painting of the Rouen Cathedral?

This is in black and white but this specific version adopted color.
Looks like you got the colorized version. It was originally in black and white.
He also flew in Korea and Vietnam, and retired a brigadier general!!😮😮😮😮
For some reason, Mr Gower seems to recognize him.... like the old man in groundhog day!
It originally was in B & W, but you chose the colorized version of the original.
Try watching the black and white version sometime. The colorizing doesn't make it better. It was filmed for Black and white.
I’m sorry. I can’t do the colour version. It has to be black and white.
IAWF IS in glorious B&W but this is alas the colorized version.
The B&W version is far superior.
I didn't notice her cry at all.
Watch Random Harvest movie.
This is the coloize version the original is black and white. This is a fantastic movie beautiful classic.
Moi je serais pas contre du cinoche français.
Connais tu , Intouchables (2011).
The Artist (2011)
...
I’m afraid you picked the wrong version. Apparently Amazon has a colorized, abridged version so you’re missing some scenes. When you react to a classic film, please do a bit of research and always choose the intact, original B&W version. Sadly, can’t watch this, too disappointing.
Yeah. I don't know how they could butcher this timeless masterpiece so much. These colors look AWFUL. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it

What scenes? The run time is the same. What colorized version are you talking about that had deleted scenes? ‘86, ‘89 or ‘07?
Long ago a full length colorized version was made and this is what she is watching. All scenes present and accounted for.
It's Not Karma it's ❤ JESUS CHRIST ❤ 😘🥰🙏💜🇺🇸🇺🇸✝️✝️✝️😇👍
Colorized? Shame on you 😢.
Potter was worse than Scrooge. Scrooge may have been cold and heartless but he was honest. He wouldn't have kept the $8,000.
I still hate that someone in the film industry had the idea to colorize these classics. Thank goodness it didn't go over well and was short lived.
Actually, I like the colorizing in this one, Zuzu's pedals show up clearer. They just need to keep the old version available too.
I think you're right, I don't think scrooge would have kept the money.
The film is black and white. You're watching a colorized version. Yeah. They went back and colorized the film. -OG
You got stuck with the bastardized color version…. Sacrilege‼️😖
You watched the colorized version. Seems like an accident on your part but I can't abide that sacrilege.
Ugh. God damned awful colourised version. Delete this and come back with something watchable. 🤮
It's colourized don't ruin a masterpiece leave well enough alone !!!!!
Oops, you watched the colorized version.
The colorized version.
I’ve never seen it in color before. Seems wrong…. Hard to get used to.
I can't stand when reactors do the colorized version.
Weird. That jealous guy that opened the pool floor, looks like that guy who unalived that Healthcare CEO. Luigi guy.
"That guy" is Carl Switzer, better known as Alfalfa from The Little Rascals!! 😊
The guy was Alph alpha from Little Rascals
That’s Spanky’s right hand man. “Alfalfa”
@@DrewAnti1960 Yep and he would get shot and killed over a dog at age 25
@@d.j.starling3559 Whoa! Crazy! Alfalfa's return!! Coincidence? Anyone else think he looks like that dude? Grown Alfalfa I mean.
Hey mum. The true angel of the movie is Mary.. as in Mary in the Hebrew bible.
Dude, I don’t watch “reaction” videos from or support those who watch bastardised colourised versions of movies made in and aesthetically grounded in black and white. What’s next, a colourised version of Ansel Adams or a less impressionistic version of a painting of the Rouen Cathedral?
