    Btw, the service tag on every Dell machine, (laptop, desktop, server) holds the information what specs the machine shipped with.

    These R710's are fairly popular on the used market here in the U.S., which surprises me since they are fairly comparable if not more than the IBM X3650 M3, which gives you a bit more value for money in terms of drive storage, PCI-E options, and, in my opinion, build quality. Thank you for showing us around this server, Morten, and I look forward to seeing what you manage to do with this one. All of those network adapter cards should come in handy!

    at 3:55 that port is used to power the cable management system. The cable management LED will be blue of red depending on the server condition.

  • @AndrewKatzmakes
    @AndrewKatzmakes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    3:46 That is actually a port for an external led. the led next to that port is less visible with a cable management arm installed, so the arms come with an LED that clips on to the arm and plugs into that port. there is another I button on the front panel, which makes all ID LEDs flash. the back button does the same thing. I assume it is so you can work on the same server if you go around the rack to the other side.

  • @chewyfruitloop
    @chewyfruitloop 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    that little socket between the built in network adapter and the psu is for the remote lights you can get to move the little led to the end of the rack arm so you can still see it when you pull the server all the way out
    the button should be to make the lcd come on i think so you can push it and then walk round the front and figure out which one it is

    the power plug is for a remote LED and the button flashes a blue led to help you identify the server in a populated rack.

    @3:55 it's a port for conecting LED light which you can attach to rails. You can start blinnking that led from frontside and use it to easly find which server are you looking from other side. Sometimes usefull when you have full rack of servers looking the same.

    I have a 1U Dell Poweredge R610, it is very similar to the R710 and they share many components like the raid controller, SD Module and iDrac module. All dell servers come standard with an onboard management controller called "iDrac Express", the managment module at the back of your server is an optional extra called an "iDrac Enterprise" which has extra features like remote control. The front display is independent of the system and is connected directly to the iDrac and can displays messages about the servers health and other info such as the hostname, time, date, etc. The SD module at the front is an optional extra also. The extra connector on the raid controller is for a different backplane that has sas redundancy.

    The front LCD will display alerts from the management board if there are any. Otherwise it will display the serial number or the name of the server if you program that in. We had one Dell server at work that was displaying something like "PCI Express fault, slot 2" for a while. The server was running normally so they opted not to do anything about it until they had some work scheduled on it.

  • @Coolkeys2009
    @Coolkeys2009 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The button next to the led at the back is a system ID button(I think there should be one at the front as well), when you press it an Id lights on the front of the server as well. Helps you avoid doing the right things to wrong server as I'm sure understand could up set the users. The Indicator panel on the front normally changes colour as well as indicating the fault in text(orange), for things like no PSU redundancy or failed fans/raid issues.

    • @davidwilson3524
      @davidwilson3524 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And finally there is a "system status indicator" which is a "connector for attaching a system indicator extension cable that is used on a cable management arm".

      I got it with 12GB. But I just ordered 6x 4GB for 40€, so that's a great deal too! The only downside is, it isn't as fully packed as the one in the vid. No additional PCI cards and no iDRAC Enterprise. Anyways, I don't need these.

  • @Nevexo287

    The button makes the light on the front flash, so you can work on the machine at the front or back, press that little button near the LED and the other side will be flashing when you get to the other side of the rack, I believe that power plug next to the LED is so you can have a light on the rack flashing at the same time of the server. Because the server flashes it's lights orange when there is something else, it will power up that port and make the light on a rack flash so the enigneer can quickly locate the server that is complaining.

    The SD card above the iDrac port is for saving the iDrac configuration should you need to reset the card or replace the card. This way you will always have a backup of your settings.

    Hi Morten, thanks for making this video.
    I'm thinking about buying another server to add to my current one, A HP ProLiant DL 160 G6 with dual X5670's, 48GB of RAM and an AMD FirePro V7900. I was thinking about a HP ProLiant DL 380 G6 or G7, have you anything bad to say about either of those models? Beyond HP's crap support for new servers lol.

      Hi Morten, Thank you very much for the reply.
      I thought the DL380 G6 and G7's are good. They look very sexy. I am to HO what you are to Lenovo, the ProLiant was my first server, and a ProLiant was the first type of server I saw, so I love them for that. I plan to populate two 38U racks with them.

    The best from that era. That is the first gen r710 though, perc6i 3Gb/s card, and there is a gen 2 which for example says II in roman numerals printed on the front tag, support for bigger cpu's, has perc7 6Gb/s cards, etc

    The sd slot on the idrac controller is so you can remotely flash files to it through the remote command line. And that number 1 riser is really hard to get out, you were on the right track though, you pretty much have to pry out that plastic connector at the base, you can push the little blue piece that pokes through the card.

    Few things. That power plug is actually a port for a LED cord. the button next to that is so you can press it, the blue light will start flashing, when you go around to the front the screen will be flashing, handy to find what sever you are working on in a stack of 20. Also the little button on the front with an "i" by it does the same thing for the rear LED. Hope this helps :D

    Just FYI, the small board with the management network port and the vFlash SD card is just a breakout board for the connections, the iDRAC controller itself is that big Nuvoton chip under the PERC RAID controller. The small board is an option, without it the iDRAC would be accessible through one of the on-board NICs. In previous generation servers (like the PE 2950) the whole DRAC (no "i" here) controller was on a separate card and was entirely optional. Also, the Service Tag is a great thing. You can find out the exact hardware configuration of any Dell computer "ever sold". This is particularly useful when you need to find specs of Dell servers that have been re-branded and sold as a different product. *cough* *cough* APC... :)

In my lab setup could I put in a 10tb WD sata drive in my Dell R720XD . I checked the Dell site and they don't list answers like this and they support some very high end and costly drives. So what do you think, can I put in a 10tb sata drive in my server or do I need to put it in my Synology DS1815+ ?

    Used Dell servers for over 15 years, can't say I've ever had different components in the same model, unless I requested additional hardware. Never heard that about any of the top brands before. Especially surprising, considering Dell does a ton of work making servers for applicances, or flanker brands in other markets.

    These servers are quite reliable. We have one at work running Hyper-V hosting 4 or 5 VM's. I think it has the dual 6 core Xeon's 90 odd GB RAM and 8 x NL-SAS drives, RAID 10. Performs very well.

    A bit sad now, bought my first ever rack server off eBay (sorry, not an 3650). Got it today but I didn't get what I ordered (I paid for a 6x3.5" one, but the one I got only had a 4x3.5" backplane and front).
    Now I wonder, exactly what tool do I need to remove the cover for the third bay seen in this picture? (Figuring I can buy an extra cable and new backplane to bring it up to speccs).

      Not to bad, the 6x backplane can be had for like 200:- and not sure what the extra cable might go for. I just wonder how to get the cover off the HD bay as it seems to use some special screw.

I wonder if it can handle 16 drives?But in today's standards even compared to the Dell R620 I bought, the r710 is total trash. Lucky I got it for $67 shipped
