small correction! Gluttony does not, in any way, take place in minos's stomach! Hakita has stated that he did not intend for people to get that idea, he just thought it was a neat idea to make the end level door appear in the mouth of the corpse.
Fun Fact: We actually DO see the surface of the earth in Ultrakill (technically) In the scene at the end of act 2 where Gabriel stands before a campfire, the celetial object in the sky is actually the Earth, not the Moon. Gabriel is sitting in the first layer (or entrance, i cant quite remember) of heaven, which in Divine Comedy is said to be on the Moon. Hakita confirmed this in the newest dev stream
Cool fact! Heresy is not actually Red! Gabriel's Rage is just so powerful his angry aura has encompassed the entire layer, you can see this theory in action from the Lights in his second fase changing back to Blue/Yellow(, it's also to fit gabriels colour scheme). another small detail you seem to have missed: If you take into account the ferryman's journal which states that the river styx became an ocean due to a sudden wave of sinners entering hell all at once, it makes more sense to imagine that hell is what caused humanity's extinction and not machines, as machines wouldn't have killed everyone all at once. I'm also fairly certain that hakita stated machines were not the cause, but I am unable to find it
hakita didn’t technically say machines were not the cause, but he said that nowhere in the game is that implied, and he told the people who maintain the wiki to remove any reference to that from the wiki.
Well who said it happened all at once? If one ferryman brings souls to the next layer, (or whatever he does), then why couldn’t the machines have simply killed too fast for the ferryman to ferry on souls? They didn’t have to all die at once (also I agree that the machines didn’t kill the humans…)

So some cool stuff about the earthmover boss, if you look REAL far in the distance it is actually mid combat with another one but completely stops as soon as you show up. Why would it stop fighting another earthmover just cause of some small guy? Well essentially every machine throughout the war was made to counteract the previous one and the V design was cancelled for mass production due to the war ending meaning it was designed to counteract the last most powerful machine, that being the earthmovers. There are warning signs on the earthmover itself showing V1 and it stops fighting another earthmover because it knows your a greater threat, which you prove to be true.
The violence layer does so fucking much for the story it makes me get a lump in my throat. We never really get a look into the world outside of hell before then but when we do it fucking stings. Imagine being one of those people, living in the shantytowns built on the back of the machine that scorched the entire planet, as it's locked in a stalemate with another one miles away, hurling lightning bolts at their target but never hitting one another like soldiers taking shots at the enemy trench. You don't know who the people are on the other Earthmover, you don't even know why you're even fighting eachother. Nobody is. The war had been going on for two centuries at this point and any reason for why it started is lost to time. I think panopticon is not much different from flash prison in terms of security because it doesn't have healing orbs. Why? Idk, maybe cuz heaven was so afraid of sisyphus that instead of securing sisyphus himself, they decided to secure his panopticon as high as possible putting 4 large doors and 5 ways of cybergrind to slow down the escape of king and eventually ran out of budged, so they couldn't afford healing orbs. Or it's just Hakita trolling us since he said himself that putting tons of hardest rooms with lots of enemies before the boss seemed to be a pretty fun idea to him. So just remember what max0r said: "P-ranking the game was not a test, *it was a warning"*
fp does have healing orbs tho, shipthefish prime just kills it before it can use them also I doubt that heaven would have a "budget" for things or even really payment for the angels in any way because they don't need it
Panopticon wasn't (to my understanding anyway) meant to actually hold Sisyphus inside, none of P-2 was. Instead, P-2 was meant to keep everything else out. It's why there's a whole level instead of just the prison/Prime Soul. My theory is that the Panopticon was meant to keep Sisyphus in stasis, it's why he easily breaks out and then says something along the lines of "I have slumbered long enough". Prison was meant to actually hold Minos, stopping his Prime Soul from forming, Panopticon was a stopgap measure as Sisyphus had already formed as a Prime Soul. That's why he breaks out after you deal enough damage/spend enough time fighting the Panopticon, you essentially wake him up. None of the angels or the Council knew how powerful a Prime Soul could be, so they did everything they could to stop them. If they had a budget, I would be willing to bet that 100% of that budget would go to stopping Prime Souls if they had a surefire way.
What a beautiful and complete analysis. I've dedicated hundreds of hours to this game and videos of it, and I'm still learning about its creation and story. Thank you very much for making this video, which just shows again how beautiful and well thought-out the story of this game is. Its creator has a beautiful mind, and I wish I could analyze and understand art such as this like you do. I can't wait to watch it again with friends.
I have binged all of your longer video essays (this one, Who's Lila and We Happy Few) and I really love your work. I cannot wait to see what you come out with next!
Hey man not sure if you'll end up seeing this but if you do, i just wanted to say i absolutely love the style of your content. I recently just got Ultrakill and have been getting flooded with videos of it on youtube and by far you have the best one ive seen. your humor is great and you really know what you're doing when it comes to making an enjoyable video and i love that.
48:24 Original is “Were you foolin” by Russ morgan who is an american band leader/arranger who ALSO made “Goodnight my beautiful” which is the original song for the caretaker’s “Libet’s delay” music.
Hakita himself has said that he likes to take things that are "bad" or frustrating in levels and make them good and fun as a challenge for himself, so there's a really big chance that there will in fact be an ice level
I was waiting so damn patiently throughout the entire video for this moment 1:14:15 because I know every ultrakill player will eventually get it 😂 also amazing video like always Howard!
1:06:17 just realized something about this little fact. The skulls actually burn enemies when you reel them with the whiplash and this is probably because of the changes to their bones that the holy cloths have caused. Probably just a crazy coincidence but still really cool
I just got the game a few days ago, and one of the aspects I love is the way the enemies progress. Enemies that are introduced as bosses and take huge effort to defeat are later on brought back as common enemies, showing your increase in skill across the game.
17:53 a very short time ago Hakita released a video of red shotgun, along with videos about other red variations. And the update is supposedly coming soon.
@@someguy15721 red shotgun is nice for healing on Sisyphus, red rocket is really not that useful outside of few scenarios, and i only really use red nailgun around sawtraps. Though all the weapons are made creatively.
I would say this video essay of Ultrakill is probably the best I’ve watched so far, It covers much of the game and what makes it so popular and fun. I really hope to see people who were interested in the game after watching both of Maxor’s Ultrakill videos react to this video as it will definitely cement any interest they had in the game and may buy and play it themselves.
There's barely any "hidden tech" its all there in the terminal if you just look for it. The only exception I can think of is slam storage but even hakita has been seen using it so there is probably a reason why.

funny thing the new full arsenal update confirmed the sentience in machines through a gutterman killing its fuel source and being mournful of it with the poem "mother mother of me" being found in 7-2 (you can find that same gutterman without a casket in the ambush of the train after you get the bomb)
1:00:26 I was NOT ready for that. I was just enjoying the video, taking a nice sip of water, and then I see THAT and have to put everything down, barely holding my drink in.

Finally, a massive video essay on ultrakill
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this at least once, but it seems to me that "EARTHMOVER" is similar in its concept to something between "God Warriors" and "Ohmu" from "Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa", but I could be wrong.
This is an extremely well put together video.
I can not believe how slop like "the day before" release on early acsess when ultrakill is also on early acsess , yet is easily one of my favourite games of all time ! Its only been a month yet ive already p ranked all the lvls , gotten most of of the secrets and more
Such a masterpiece
Also what were your thoughts on the new buckshot roulette update ?
Man ican't express how much i pogged at the end of act 2 seeing Gabriel with the head of the one councillor and the horns blaring in the back it was a religious experience man one that i would hit my head with a iron pipe just to give me amnesia and play the level again
You forgot to put the skull on the praying skeleton in limbo
and also the one with the rocket launcher
whilst i do agree that red phrases with spaces between is hell though phrases without spaces are v1, it has a continence and in 7-4 in a little tucked away ally you can find a book all in red but at the end of the book it says the book is blank
but holy shit great video
hell could be saying the red text in that book tho?
It could have hijacked V1’s systems and make them see what isn’t there
@@zerosocialskillz1221mfw the pit of sin and punishment speaks into my mind to tell me about my greatest enemy, making me hallucinate text that isn’t there:
This is genuinely one of the best ULTRAKILL video I've watched! I really hope you do a follow up once the game is finished
1:07:19 i don't know about other ultrakill players, but after hearing that you not only beat 4-s completely, but also liked the experience, you are not only good, your are built different.
1:26:51 Oh my god that spanish pronunciation felt like heaven to my ears.
1:29:32 reminder that it’s entirely possible the minotaur was made by “your mother”
58:36 with the new lore, we now know that they absolutely have feelings, and they don't want to kill. How depressing :(
One tiny correction, the fishing level is actually connected to wrath as a sin, because it's a cozy game that calms people down
It's an antithesis to the sin that gets you there
The yellow beam can be parried if your close to its face ackchually
VERY DAMN SATISFYING TO DO TOO
THANK YOU for talking about the music. Might be one of my favorite parts of the game
cant wait for part 2 when the rest of the game comes out in 1.0!
good video btw :)
17:48 I find it so funny how not even a week after this was uploaded, this part became incorrect lmao
God vs V1 sounds like an insane 5 hour mission... for speedrunners
So just remember what max0r said: "P-ranking the game was not a test, *it was a warning"*
fp does have healing orbs tho, shipthefish prime just kills it before it can use them
also I doubt that heaven would have a "budget" for things or even really payment for the angels in any way because they don't need it
Panopticon wasn't (to my understanding anyway) meant to actually hold Sisyphus inside, none of P-2 was.
@@chocolatemilkman680 "budget" was a joke lmao
I normally do not watch videos this long but dam this was so good! You inspire me to make my own video lol
I can't wait to watch it again with friends.
holy shit rickfernello is here lol
Awesome video dude ! It's really good but doesn't surpass your Who's Lila video tbh 😅 BUT i just bought Ultrakill and it's the dope.
I have binged all of your longer video essays (this one, Who's Lila and We Happy Few) and I really love your work. I cannot wait to see what you come out with next!
The trans colors on the weapons really makes you feel like an Ultrakill player
Hey man not sure if you'll end up seeing this but if you do, i just wanted to say i absolutely love the style of your content. I recently just got Ultrakill and have been getting flooded with videos of it on youtube and by far you have the best one ive seen. your humor is great and you really know what you're doing when it comes to making an enjoyable video and i love that.

Hell Itself, feeding on pain and torture, and having brought the exctinction of humans : "Am I a joke to you?"
1:06:17 just realized something about this little fact. The skulls actually burn enemies when you reel them with the whiplash and this is probably because of the changes to their bones that the holy cloths have caused. Probably just a crazy coincidence but still really cool
I'm a simple man, I see over an hour talking about ultrakill I like and subscribe. Excellent video, you're funny and charming! 😊
Now that the update is out, how do you feel about the new weapons?
@@someguy15721 red shotgun is nice for healing on Sisyphus, red rocket is really not that useful outside of few scenarios, and i only really use red nailgun around sawtraps. Though all the weapons are made creatively.
i just got the demo a couple days ago and i watched a video about the v2 speedrun and watching you do felt amazing for some reason
Bug : hey i think you need to remove me
Hakita : welcome to the family.

Yo gotta say as an ultrakill lore enthusiast you were COOKING in this video, especially in regards to the testaments
How cool would it be if after beating Gabriel the 3rd time, he says
"May your days be many, and your woes few"
And then, five days later, Hakita gave us the final weapon types
15:26 25:18 27:52 34:09 35:43 massive? you know what else is massive?
50:07 actually, challenges unlock tracks from specific level for Cybergrind! And for prime sanctums you just need to beat it.
1:02:41 this level has a community that focuses on finding the size 2 fish
There's barely any "hidden tech" its all there in the terminal if you just look for it. The only exception I can think of is slam storage but even hakita has been seen using it so there is probably a reason why.
Ok, I need help. In 1:08:47 there's a music that I SWEAR I know but the memory eludes me and I'm slowly going insane. Does anyone know what it's from?
