I also loved "the Ember Island Players" and from what I can gather many others do as well but some really dislike it.
Regarding Ty Lee's arc, she thought she needed to stand out for people to notice and pay attention to her but what she really needed is to find people that appreciate, value, and validate her as an individual in the way the Kyoshi warriors are implied to (they smile when Ty Lee says they'll "be friends forever"). Ty Lee no longer needs to stand out to feel seen because she recognizes that her new friends can really SEE her regardless.

On the note of “did Jet just… die?” “Ya know, it was really unclear.” Two major things to know: First, when the show was originally airing there was a TON of fandom arguments over whether Jet had died. Everyone wanted to know, no one was sure. So this line is 100% poking fun at the fact that no one could tell. (The creators have since stated that yes, Jet dies there.) Another interesting detail is that Zuko knew Jet from his time in Ba Sing Se, but Zuko never knew what happened at Lake Laogai because he passed out after freeing Appa. So this play is how Zuko found out that Jet had died. Kind of unfortunate.

I think you’re right that Ozai is the physical manifestation of the themes. I think the “point” of the show is to show what a genocide can look like and how you can change for the better, but in a way that kids might understand without realizing it.
That said, the Azula/Zuko fight is considered to be one of the most beautiful but heartbreaking moments in the whole show. I get chills watching it.

A fun fact about the Ember Island episode is that the Toph in the play was actually an early concept for the actual Toph in the show, she was going to be a giant man and I think that is too funny. Ember Island episode is pure gold.

Katara couldn't have used bloodbending even if she wanted, she needs the full moon for that. Though yeah it's a bit silly that they don't do 2vs1, but at the same time it's Zuko and his honor complex, so I can kinda see it I think?

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I grew up with this show and have so much nostalgia for it, so it's fun to see somebody who didn't watch it as a kid react to it. I also do really appreciate you talking about the flaws of the show. I know a lot of people do think it's flawless, but it's definitely not, and it's just nice to see somebody love the show but acknowledge where it could have been written a bit better. But despite that, again, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I watched the show as it came out on television, and just because of my schedule and timing I never saw The Southern Raiders episode. I saw everything else. Then a few years later I got the show on DVD. I had not even realized that episode existed until it started playing. It really hit hard. It was exactly the Katara moment I never knew I needed until that moment. To this day it's one of my favorite episodes.

My problems with season 3 mainly center around "the whole season or show needed a second draft once they got to the end," an issue that's a result of just how TV production works - work it episode-by-episode and focus on the episode you're working on right now and don't worry about future episodes. Which is a trend ATLA bucked, and is frequently praised for bucking, but they didn't buck it enough to prevent this issue.
Season 3 has a lot of episodes that deal with issues that are too big for one episode, and issues that should have come up a lot sooner. A smaller example is Aang's insomnia, which could have been led up to by him not being so energetic in the previous episode. A much larger issue is the "no kill" dilemma - a dilemma that could have been kept by either having Aang go out of his way to make sure the enemies they fight are okay after every "that guy didn't die on-screen, but he's definitely dead" action scene throughout the series or including the issue in the initial discussion with everyone else - I'd imagine someone like Sokka cutting in with, "Why is this a problem for you now when we have killed people before?" only to reveal Aang is in denial about those "but he's definitely dead," scenarios (helped by the deaths' "off-screen" nature), resulting in a back-and-forth ending with, "Okay, so maybe some of those Fire Nation soldiers who fell off that cliff or the ones who were on that ship that we sank and left in arctic waters might have survived, but do you really think all of them did?"
The issue you have with early season 3 that you beautifully articulated in previous videos? The "re-doing season 1 episodes" issue? I think that ties in with what I said here about needing an extra draft over the whole thing.

Hey FMA, I really enjoyed your reaction and analysis of ATLA. Ember Island Players is, I believe, very well regarded. As you noted, this episode does have great humor, both the parody of the recap episode and self-referential jokes. I think that the levity and change in tone from the darker aspects endears this episode to viewers.
Ozai is honestly kind of a Mcguffin. He's pretty flat, just an evil guy.
It is true that the climax of the final agni Kai was a little forced, but its worth noting that Kataravl needs a full moon to bloodbend, so she couldn't handle Azula that way even if she wanted to.
I also think many agree that the Lion Turtle was pretty clumsy. We don't want Aang to kill Ozai, but if energy bending was the answer, there was opportunity (especially in The Swamp, Appa's Lost Days, and The Guru) to establish a more evident throughline about bending being energy / energy connecting everything.
Aang claiming he hasn't killed people is kinda funny. Not intending to plug, but Overanalyzing Avatar has a whole montage of Aang almost certainly killing people in the relevant episode.
Sorry for Wall of Text version 2.
'Your Zuko costume is pretty good, but the scar is on the wrong side' always gets me.

Thank you so much for rekindling my love for ATLA! Of course, I watched it all over again together with you, and it was awesome listening to a first-time viewer thoughts on the show.
The beauty of the show os how easily one can look past the weak parts and appreciate it for its strongest. Indeed, the show was never about Ozai, the plotlines resolved with a Deus x-machina bit, and so on. But the characters and their developments, the courage to tackle heavy topics in a way sensible to kids, the self awareness of its flaws, the amazing animation and voice actors, it all overshadowes any weak points, imh.
As for the Ember Island episode, it is a fan favorite! I particularly like how emotional Sokka gets watching his love story with Yue.
As for Aang definitely killing people, I will refer to the talk he has with Kiyoshi. He mentioned, "but you didn't actually killed him. He fell by himself." And Kiyoshi said she didn't see the difference, but Aang does. Despite this, he killed a living being when Appa was captured. He sliced one of the wasps, and it shows how the extend of his dispair.
As for Katara not using blood bending on Azula, it is a "forbidden" and cursed technique. When she used it on the person she thought was her mother's killer, it was an indicative of how far she was willing to go to get revenge. Ultimately, blood bending is what killed her mother. Hama escaping using this technique was what let the Fire Nation to decide not to take prisoners from the Water Tribes anymore.
It has been fun to chat about ATLA you! :)

*This is going to be a long comment, I apologize in advance*
First of all, THANK YOU FOR LOVING THE SOUTHERN RAIDERS!! It's one of my favorite episodes and has so much character resolution for Katara that has been much needed. Like you, I love how it was Zuko that she felt comfortable around enough to show her true feelings and he didn't shy from it or scold her for it - he addressed it and accepted that anger while working to help her through it. I think that's the biggest difference between how her anger was addressed by Aang and Sokka vs Zuko. And yes, that episode is one of the best and I love every part of it. But I'll stop gushing about it 🤣
Ember Island Players is a MASTERPIECE. I love it so much, and am pretty sure it's a fan favorite to everyone!
Aang's conflict really felt forced to me as well: he always says he doesn't want to kill, but he has done things to others in the past that really goes against that, and then he doesn't want to kill the ONE person that he has to face and conquer? Doesn't work for me either lol. I understand that he has always been a peaceful person and he doesn't want to resort to violence, but if they wanted to do this, they could have displayed it a different way, personally. The Lion Turtle however was foreshadowed back in Season 2, so at least that was presented beforehand.
I'm on board 100% with your thoughts on Aang and Katara - I really disliked how they handled that, and it didn't really have any good resolution on either of their character arcs.
Zuko and Iroh's moment makes me cry every single time. I love their reunion and interactions so so much.
I generally love the finale with a few tidbits here and there that were just okay to me. But I really love the Zuko and Azula fight: watching siblings at odds with one another fighting because of opposing stances is just heartbreaking. They've both been manipulated and abused by their father in different ways (Zuko was never good enough and Azula was the perfect prodigy that couldn't fail expectations) and it shows in their final fight. I get the gripe about not using advantages, but I think it fits better that they fought one another. The tone of the whole fight is somber, not victorious, even as Zuko is getting the upper hand. It's my favorite finale fight. And Zuko taking the hit for Katara is super impactful, but one thing I do love about it was how Katara ended up defeating Azula. The wit and creativity she had was amazing.
Side note, I don't think Katara could use bloodbending at the time, since it wasn't a full moon and that's the only time she could use it.
Aang and Ozai's fight was good too, don't get me wrong, and I really liked it. They really made it epic and I liked when he was in the Avatar State with all four elements around him.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this series! Avatar is one of my favorite shows of all time. It is incredible and amazing, and I love these characters so dearly. It deserves all the hype and love around it. Zuko and Katara are my top 2 characters in this series and I love their journey, character growth, and just really everything about them. Zuko still to this day has the best redemption arc I've seen in a story.
I can't wait for you to start Attack on Titan! That'll be a good one and I'll be curious to see your thoughts on it.

I've been wanting to rewatch the series so I could do a journal for the show. I'd have a spread for each of the episodes and maybe a few spreads for after each season. I'm super excited for when I get started. I plan to rank the episodes after each season and everything. We'll see how in depth I go when I start this endeavor.
I've always said the finale of the show was my favorite episode/episodes. I adore them so much with the fight scenes and the way they add the music. It is so awesome to watch. I get people being upset with the whole Aang gets his connection the past avatar spirits back basically on accident, but I enjoyed it so much that I didn't really mind. I get wanting more set up for the Aang learns to take away someone's bending away. It is just there just in time with no lead up.
People being annoyed with Aang for not just killing Ozai in the first place makes me upset sometimes because you realize you are saying you want a 13 year old boy to kill someone right? While you can say that he killed a lot of people in the North Pole, I see that as the ocean spirit using Aang's body. If that makes any sense. He wasn't in control. I know there is more instances people bring up for Aang killing people already, but the difference is this is people telling him to go into this fight with the intent to kill. I don't know. I think that is pretty harsh thing to put on his shoulders, anyone's shoulders really, when he feels so strongly against this. Also just because someone has done something before doesn't mean they want to do it again. If it's not obvious, Aang is my favorite character along with Appa. They are precious and I love them. ☺

Ember Island players seems to be one of the most fan-favorited recap episodes in any series, and I know I love it!
20:45 this moment never fails to make me cry at least a little bit, even after re-watching multiple times
One of my personal favorite moments is when Zuko takes the lighting for Katara, even if it does feel impractical to get in that situation in the first place. I'm also definitely a person that's really bad at thinking about things critically, so most of your criticisms throughout the show tended to throw me for a loop 😅

  • @Griffnix

So now I can tell you how I feel about Book 3. Overall I think it was fine but I felt it was a step back from book 2. What I liked about book 2 was how it took it's time and it somewhat serialized unlike book 1 that very much felt episode of the week. For example, when Aang needs to see Roku again this season, he gets the message, goes there and talks to him in one episode. Previously, it would have taken longer but we don't have time in here.
One thing that annoys me is Aang learns firebending at the very end and has time to practice before he has to take down the Fire Lord. Even in book one, Katara teaches Aang what little she knows before they get to the Northern Water temple. I think I would have like it if we got a full 20 episode season and take the last 4 episodes and make it into a movie. That way things can breathe better and we get more time with things.
This is the first time I'm writing my thoughts on book 3 so hopefully it makes sense.

Speaking of ATLA and Vinland Saga (SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA)!
I think both series do a good job of making their characters earn their redemption. After Zuko joins team Avatar, he still has to go to the effort of proving himself to everyone, especially Katara. He had to make sure Iroh knew how much he regretted his decision. He had to prove the extent of his development to the people he hurt the most. In a similar vein, Thorfinn had to earn the respect and trust of Einar, a victim of the type of violence Thorfinn once perpetrated. He had to earn the forgiveness of Hild, one of his direct victims. Zuko's redemption wouldn't have been as meaningful if he had joined the team in Ba Sing Se; it was much more powerful to see him get everything he wanted and still stand up to his father. It's compelling to see Thorfinn decide to turn his back on violence and warfare, but it's even more compelling to see him get another chance at revenge (coming face-to-face with Floki) and choose to spare his life. Both stories give their respective characters a chance at everything they wanted from the beginning, and seeing them reject those things is such a cathartic way of showing how much they've changed.

The ember island players is a fan favorite, espically the line about jet and yeah, the lion turtle thing is a bit of a deus ex machina. They're were a few mentions of lion turtles existing but the ability to take away people's bending should have been set up more. Okay, lets explain me the reason for 1vs1 batlles. They are more realistc and in a historical perspective accurate. There are many reasons why u choose a 1vs1 against a big army battle: culture (northmen/vikings, Samurai and more), geopolitics (getting honor for killing a famous person, for example the 1vs1 at the Trojan war). For Zuko the the 1vs1 makes in two reasons a lot of sense, first of all the cultural reason, chinese and japanese cultures solved some millitary or throne problems with a 1vs1 and the geopolitical reason could be, that with a victory, Azula can secure 100% of her claim to the throne and this cannot be contested. Especially because she is a woman. But with the win against her brother she could spread the news, that she killed her traitor-brother by herself and with that she could secure the support of the people and could become a beloved and feared Firelord.

I think the biggest problem with the show for me is simply that it had to stay within a certain mature content for kids. Legend of Korra was able to go a bit further mature-wise but overall I think they wouldn't have had to make so many throw away goofy episodes if they didn't need to stay within the" kids show guidelines of the early 2000's"

The episodes aren't throwaway, nor made specifically for kids only. We got an Avatar "for adults" with the live action and we all saw how that turned out, just can't compare to children's media. And Korra is honestly wayy less mature and much more naive of a series.

Ive noticed sometimes it's ok that the audience is learning with the character and other times it's like "well I wish we would have gotten a hint towards that thing the character didn't even know about".
