Agree on the plastic dogs. Very cool that they at least made an option to put them on!
Those dogs should help that saw out a ton. Havent got to use it yet since i did that upgrade. Been at work too much
I hear ya man! @@TheRustyGarageandHomestead
Did these about 6 yrs ago love these mods
Thanks for watching. This was a ton of fun to put togetherness. I'm ready to do another. Maybe a 460 or 440 next
Great video!
Thanks for the comment Terrell and that's for watching
Thanks for the info. I have 2 of these i might have to try this out on👍
Hey thanks for watching. Ive always been a fan of the side chain adjuster over the ft adjuster. I believe the OEM kit was around $15 on amazon. The dogs are gonna help this little saw perform alot better.
upgrading the tentioner on my 170 was the best thing i ever did to that saw. great video...thumbs up !!
Thanks for watching and the comment. I agree. All my other stihls are side tension and it's just more convenient
Great tutorial.
Did same upgrades on one I had.
The Upgrades are so cheap I can't see why a person wouldn't. They sure help this saw out.
l have already purchased 2 ms 180s for $299au with carry case and spare chain. Beware one struggling dealer refused to provide carry case as "his margins were to thin. Second and subsequent purchases made with a much better Stihl dealer. I have completed these upgrades for $22 au. l am planning to go to the 18inch bar (rare) on the second chainsaw.
4 years later and l haven't worn out the first one yet after 8 new chains and one new bar. Brilliant machine has completed over 500 hours work. Not quiet the disposable cheap purchase l was expecting.

Hi Patrick. These saws the 170's/180's are great little lightweight saw's. As long as you take care of them "and it sounds like you are" these saw's should last a lifetime.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I believe many people don’t know about that bearing! Good job. Some bearings are available metal caged and some plastic
Agreed. it only takes a couple minutes to pop that apart and lube it up. I didnt have any dry film lubricant or i would of used that instead but the wheel bearing grease works
G day from Ontario A couple yrs ago took pkup load to dump. he was unloading, I look on & saw orange & white
now we have 027-8 so I pull out stihl saw. Took home & started it. It was 170. It needed chain & sprocket $30.
Boy that is a fast running nice little saw. I did sub.
U know it runs faster than 28 does. I really like it
Thanks
Hey thanks for the comment, watching and subscribing. These little saws have there place for sure. I do enjoy carrying this thing around when I'm doing limbing or smaller projects. For its size it is a great cutting machine. You made out like a bandit for gettign that saw and it only costing $30. You got a great deal.
No no@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead
I got a 14" bar and bigger chain for my MS180, sooo much better, and bolts straight on, no sprocket change. Ive done your suggested mods already, they make the saw much nicer to use. Mine runs very rich, so the spark arrestor will be the next thing to go. Great vid!
Thanks for watching. Glad the video was useful.
Ive got a detailed servicing video coming out in a couple weekd for my MS290 & 310 but the same servicing applies to the majority of saw's
Yea i did the same thing!!! and its a NEW SAW!!! I love that thing. NO it wont blast up a 22 oak its not meant for that... You dont take a tack hammer and drive in HUGE spikes right? NO. But for smaller work its inane. Limbs smaller trees its awesome. Thank you for posting this some other guy said DONT do that... Ive run my 180 Lots with the muffler opened up a little and the spark arrestor out and the big tooth conversion and its AWESOME...
These little saw's are under rated by alot of people. Yeah there small and they have a purpose but, They pack a punch in a tiny package@@LiveFreeOrRIP
Subbed, super well done video brother. I posted a video of my ghetto ms170 power mods the other day. Turned out well surprisingly.
Hey Thank you JunkyardWheeling. These little saws are great for tossing in a vehicle when trail riding or having at the ready for smaller tasks around the farm. They do a really good job
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead yeah exactly! And with a 16 inch bar you can do most anything with some thinking and skill. A little bit of cheap mods and they run like a 39cc easily.
Agreed. I usually grab this saw when I top a tree just because it's alot lighter to carry around than my other saws.
Nice video man! I am putting the dogs on my MS180 tomorrow but mine came with the side adjustment new.. either way the kit I got had 2 dogs and 2 adjusters so extra parts for me!! Again, nice video.
Peelawig thank you for watching and commenting. Those MS180's are nice saw's. Glad to hear it already has the side adjuster on it. Im not a fan of ft adjusters.
I like the ms170. I think it is a good performing saw for the money and weight. They get a lot of criticism but I suspect it may very well be from the same people that don’t recognize the purpose and value in a battery powered tool as well. I find that many tools excel in one area but not another. Not every saw needs be 70cc or 90cc. 😂
Joe i totally agree. For years we used our MS310, 290, 041 and 08 for cutting and limbing. When we 1st got the MS170 I picked it up to see the weight difference i thought if this thing cuts decent this will help a ton for doing limb work. It works great for those smaller tasks. Currently i think those saws are $199 i believe ours was around $150 when we got it. For the money its a great value. Both of these upgrades i believe cost me around $25. I feel that for the upgrades it was money well spent. Thanks for the comment and stay warm
Very good! @@TheRustyGarageandHomestead
These 2, plus an ms230 (walboro 215) carburetor are musts on these little saws!
Thanks Blackhawk. You are correct. That carb would make this thing come alive I need to install one
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead I put one on a 180 before selling, and it was night and day difference! You have to drill the holes for the carb adjustments, but thats it
That's very doable. Those 170's/180's are great limb saws because they are lightweight. If you can add more power then heck yes I'm all about it.
Throw that carb on, and open up the muffler a bit and they run decent! I still prefer a little bit bigger saw (250/251, or my 362), but im usually on the ground.
Thanks for sharing this! I don't know why they had to put the chain tensioner on the front of these saws, its such an awkward pain in the ass to adjust.
Thanks for watching. I agree. The side tensioner is just way more easy to use. It cost about $15 for the OEM parts to change it
Good stuff 👍 how's your 170 for leaking bar oil from the underside ?
Hi Mr Steve. This one is actually good as far as not leaking much. it does drewl some. I have seen some in the past that seem to leak quite a bit. Luckly this one isn't too bad.
I have an 170, my son in law has a 170 and I have an old one a guy gave me because it wouldn't go, so i will also save this one to watch later even after I watch it now lol. This will get a few views lol
Hey tucker thanks for watching. The 170's are great little saws for limbing and small stuff. There super light so that helps and these 2 cheap upgrades make it even more of a pleasure to run
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead yeah I don't do any heavy cutting anymore so it works great for my use. Plus it's easy on my back lol.
I use a dry film lube on my saw bearings, goes on wet and dries it becomes a film, it is lube but wont attract dirt. Grease the base the of the air filter toi kewep micro dust from being sucked in. A 14 inch non safety bar and chain seems about perfect of these little saws. The metal dawg proctects the frint of the oil tank.
Thanks for watching. Yes sir i have used a spray graphite before and it works great. I am currently out of it. I havent thought of greasing the base of the air filter. Thats a good idea im going to do that. The little dogs i didnt even think about them protecting the tank. Another good reason to install them. The plastic dogs make me scratch my head. The steel ones will help this little saw out a ton. Ive really been looking forward to the side chain adjuster. I think for OEM parts it cost me right at $15 on amazon. These saws are great for small projects and limbing. The other saw's i have just get too heavy after awhile.
Good content, good tunes great instruction, amazing filming - I love this channel. Folks, you need to subscribe to this channel! Keep cuttin' Mike!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Travis. This little saw is a very handy tool to have around
Coming over from Brock, one question what do you use to clean tree sap from your chains
Thank you Greg. I hope you find some of my videos helpful.
Young man I'll have a 251C only use it for campfire cooking and to stay warm at night! My question is should i run the saw on 40/1 for better lubrication like people say on TH-cam or just follow Stihls advice and run it on 50/1 ??? Also does the carburettor needs to be adjusted since it runs more rich on oil or just leave it the way it is ???
I'll sincerely thank you in advance Gunter
Hi Gunter Becker. My honest opinion is it is just fine at 40:1. The carb may need tuned slightly for the 40:1. I'm sure it was tuned at 50:1. 50:1 would be ok as well if you run good oil. I would just personally steer clear of the stihl silver bottle.
Thanks for watching
Good video, music's too much, too loud though 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting MountainKeeper. I apologize for the music being to loud. Still trying to find a happy spot with it. Some people don't like hearing me talk all the time so I try to break it up adding some music.
Agree.
I'd consider the use of grease inadvisable in such a dirty application as a chain saw. It will tend to capture and retain all manner of grit and abrasives. And certainly there's enough oil flying around anyway, so that no additional lubrication is even needed.
Maybe that's recommended by Stihl, but seems inadvisable to me.
Hi Lynnlard. I believe you are correct it is not the best. Its a good idea to clean & inspect it regularly. It does need some lubrication on it however. That brg will get very dry and spinning at 14k RPM's I've seen the ends of the crank wear down from a dry Brg.
I did not have any in this video but the use of a dry graphite lubricant is what I would normally like to run.
Thanks for commenting.
I think me and the boys want to challenge you to a time saw off 18" to 20" diameter chunk. Big saw challenge?
That sounds like something we should do. Mr. Tim, your big saw is way bigger than my biggest saw...... for now, lol.
We might have to do a tiny saw challenge, lol
30cc challenge?
Still won't oil through
Thanks for watching. I haven't had any issues with oiling. Wonder what's causing your issues
First thing you need to up grade are your tools. Not very convincing you know what your doing if you have to use an Allen wrench style torx.
I think I'm doing fine on tools. Thanks for watching.
@@TheRustyGarageandHomesteadhe’s right, then you need to learn to turn more than a 1/4 each time…
@@dw3901 thank you. Makes so much more sense now
Great video. The music was to loud and annoying for a learning video. I had to fast forward through it. There was nothing wrong with just hearing your voice.
Hey thanks for watching and commenting. I just went in and pulled the music down as far as i could. Hope that helps.
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Thank you for understanding.
I have a MS180 and i did the SIMPLE Big tooth conversion by changing out the bar and chain to the Next size up without WITHOUT any modifications. This give you a MUCH better cutting saw. And the chain is MUCH more beefy and to me Easier to sharpen. The saw REALLY comes to life and cuts well AFTER this modification. STIHL OE parts even say it FITS so before you say it NOT intended to use that size you are WRONG. On the package for the BAR and Chain it CLEARLY says Fits MS180. Why would Stihl put that it fits on the package if you cant use it. The Pico chain shit is garbage... And it belongs there.
Thanks for watching. I've had this saw for years id have to check but I'm thinking we did put the bigger sprocket and chain on it. Maybe that was on the other saws. If not I'll be doing that upgrade as well. I like bigger chains. Thank you
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Like I said you dont need to change the sprocket. You swap the bar and chain only. if you are interested i could get you Stihl part numbers for OE parts.
Yes sir ill take em and compare them to what i have. I dont remember what all we did to this saw if anything when we got it. i know our other saws we have changed stuff but dont remember on this one for sure. The MS 170 cost right at $150 new when we got it. There $199 now so however long ago thats been. Thank you@@LiveFreeOrRIP
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead here is the Part number for the BAR. On the bar it clearly says ms170 ms180. This bar is for an .050ga just search this part number and you will know what chain you need. You will NOT need to replace your sprocket.
Stihl # 3005 000 4813 YE
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Our Local Stihl dealer will sell MS180s With this bar and chain on the saw already. You can also take the part number directly to your Stihl dealer to see if they have the Bar and chain In stock. I would bet they do. IF the guy says something dumb like it wont cut well or its NOT designed to use that.. On the package it says fits 170 180 and 10 OTHER saws. He might reply well because you can dont mean you should... HAVE common sense its not a 70cc saw. I have used mine plenty of times at this point and it preforms awesome. I also opened up my exhaust with a screw flat screwdriver a touch just bend them open more and remove the spark arrestor that gets clogged up. Keep her sharp and you are in for a NEW saw. The saw handles it Awesome. You dont need a 251. My ms180 is a awesome little saw.
I hear bluegrass and can’t make out what you’re saying.
Thanks for watching. Sorry about that I tried to make sure the music was turned down low. I need to get a new mic that would probably help
Saw are going to ruin the world
Thanks for the comment. What do you mean? I think you ment RULE lol.
Yup jist grab yir a han filler and lub up ur Jones
