That's how to do a video! There's a guy on YT that made 6 videos of his truck camper build. You didn't see the completed build until the 6th video. All he did was talk & talk & talk for 5 1/2 videos about what not to do & why he did his the way he did. Then at the very end, you got to see the camper for like 30 seconds, with about 15 seconds of inside shots. He never showed it gradually coming together. It was 5 1/2 wasted vids. You did the video right! Thank you!
Well, if they are monetized it makes sense to have more videos. This video shows what was done but not how it was done or how much it ended up weighing.

Agreed, very nice build! It does look like a 'factory built' unit. If it were mine, the artistic side of me would have made the graphics the same color blue as the 4x4 graphics on the truck. I still like it though!
Very nice work but you left the exterior plain wood ? It's not gonna last long in the elements. Home depot sells that PVC kitchen plastic 1/8 inch wall board.
I cannot understand why people keep making campers out of wood. Few years down the line and you have a rat's nest. And not even marine grade ply, but just the normal stuff. Mind-boggling.
Looks like yours is coming along nicely ( I looked at your channel). I find it easier to build from the inside out and set the complete roof on top of the walls. I have since built another camper you can see videos on my channel

There is a grate job done.! The only down side is . . .the truck. On another 1500 truck with extended cab you could extend the camper, at least 2 feet longer and make your effort into a "full camper" (even with a wet bath)
I'm thinking you've done this before🤔 look good as the pros. Little bigger truck and a bigger camper would give you more chances to show your talents. A/c, shower, toilet kitchen table way more fun stuff. Good job!
Thanks for commenting. This is my first camper, I did a lot of research on TH-cam before I started. The camper is small to keep it light enough for the 1/2 ton truck I already had. If I get a bigger truck I will definitely build a bigger camper but this one is working out fine for us right now

Something fascinating about truck campers. I've been living in one for five years. Sure is small and cramped but something good about it. can't quite figure it out
Robert, I see the turnbuckles you used to mount to the inside of the bed on the back of the camper. what did you use up front. I didn't see any access ports to catch the diloops in the front of the truck bed

Dry weight ended up 850 lbs includes includes refrigerator microwave air conditioner table and mattress. The jacks did not work well, with the weight on them there was too much friction on the poles. I added a 4 ft outrigger with a 5 gallon bucket of water to counter balance the camper weight. That works fairly well but if I had it to do again I would do something else
The bed is 5 ft 5 in inside with the tailgate closed. I have wondered if it would fit other trucks, I built it to fit the dimensions of my truck. Look at my walk thru video to see it in use

The side and back walls are about an inch thick. 1/4 inch plywood inside 1/8 outside 1x2s and 3/4 styrofoam insulation between. The front and roof are 2 inch insulation with 1/8 ply inside and out. The beams in front and behind the roof vent are actual 3/4 by 2” cut from 1x4s with a slight upward bow so water will not puddle on the roof.
I own a sign shop and havepretty good taste. I see jr. high kid graphic layouts alot. They put their beret on sideways... I call them Wonder Signs. Stevie Wonder's shop.
I've watched a hundred different videos and still cannot understand the physics on how the roof overhang and sidewalls don't collapse. Anybody have some words of wisdom or a good link explaining?

I do like the teardrop style roof framing. I'm sure the contour does help with wind resistance. I'm looking to use some of your building techniques. But only for a slide on camper trailer.So I can also use the trailer for hauling other things. When not using it for camping.
jam aha I spent about $1600 mostly at Home Depot on the build. I got used windows for free. Later I bought camper jacks for about $360. I was looking for a used camper but couldn’t find one small/light enough for a 1/2 ton truck so I tried to build it as light as possible. The empty camper with ac microwave and refrigerator weights 850# so it worked out pretty good. If you could find one to repair or rebuild that would meet your needs that would be a good way to go

I was trying to build as small and light as possible so I could carry it on my 1/2 ton truck. I spent $1600 building it the windows came out of a junk motor home and were free. I later bought jacks that cost about $500. I started out looking for a used camper but I couldn’t find one light enough for a 1/2 ton truck

I used house paint reinforced with cloth, sometimes called poor mans fiberglass. I used bed sheets on the sides to get a smooth finish and canvas on the roof overlapped a little on the edges. We have been using the camper for 2 years now and it still looks good

With a 3/4 ton you could go much bigger. I limited the size to keep weight down. I think the building method worked well starting with the inside walls you can add framing where you need it , I did not have windows when I started so I modified the framing when I got them
@@robertcox2335 Yeah I plan to go bigger for sure. My truck is a crew cab with a long bed. I plan to make the cab over about 6 feet long which will bring it out almost to the windshield. I am sure mine will be a good bit heavier than yours turned out to be. I have done some rough drawings trying to figure out shape and size and its looking like it will most likely be about 14 feet in total length.
Justin Flynn glad you liked it. The refrigerator is 110V. We freeze a gallon jug of water and put it on the middle shelf and fill the freezer compartment with reusable ice packs. If we plug in every night this keeps cold for over a week. I have a video showing a walk through on my TH-cam channel also

Nice job. Wasn't thinking about the Reflectix PolyPro Footboard. Really liked the size of the cabover & the height. Personally not a fan of the rounded front but that's just me. You did an EXCELLENT job of it! 1 question, did you put an aluminum skin on the outside or did you paint the wood? Either way, reat job!

Matty4z thanks for watching. I bent the exterior 1/8 plywood and drew the curve on another piece of plywood then cut it out for a pattern. All the small blocks of wood were cut on a band saw
The truck bed already had tie down loops I used a turnbuckle on all for corners. You can see the back two in one of the last photos of the video. There are other videos of the camper on my channel

Thanks for commenting. The wood jacks didn’t work well. There was a lot of friction on the poles so much that one of the cheap winches I bought broke the first time I used them very scary. Then I bought better winches and added counter weights then they worked alright but you really need 3 so the camper doesn’t rock front to back. I ended up spending $150 and a lot of time on the homemade jacks and was stressed out every time I used them. So I bought 3 Rieco tripod camper jacks you can see them in use in my cruzing the coast video. They were less than 200 apiece and well worth it in time saving and peace of mind.
Thanks for viewing. The camper is big enough for short trips (a week or so) and the 4x4 will go places a motor home won’t. With back seats folded there is lots of storage in the cab. Take a look at the walk thru video on my channel.
The longest trip we have taken was about 1000 miles total round trip. The truck drives about the same with or without the camper. In a strong wind gusts
You can feel strong gusts but not bad. I intentionally kept the weight low and built the roof light (you definitely cannot walk on this roof) the center of gravity is well forward of the rear axel. The weight of the camper only sets the rear of the truck down 1 inch. I know it looks like a lot of space above the front tire but the truck has a 6 inch lift kit on the front (only 3 inch on rear. Go figure, that’s the way it was when I got it).

also looks like you ripped 3/4 plywood for some of your framing as well. That would be stronger than clear pine right? works like small microlam

Thanks. The wood jacks really did not work out well. So I bought a set of Rieco Titan jacks they work much better

Won the ouside did you use paint or some kind of coating? Also on the corners did you use fiberglass or wood filler and then sand the seems smooth?

My wife says $1602.99 The windows, mattress and sink came out of a junk 80s motor home and were free. Most every thing else came from Home Depot

Great job ,I would have got another foot or so and extended it at least to the windshield, looks good, you know wood.
Needs turnbuckles to keep it attached to the truck. Happen to take a sharp turn/corner to fast and that's gonna flip right out of the back.
