Here we have the 2020 KTM power valve puncture. It is only a matter of time before it happens to you, even if you are running radiator guards. I’ve heard from users that have Emperor Racing guard, bullet proof designs guards, trail tech guards, Unibiker guards, and Flo Motorsports guards. It can still happen. It’s a result of KTM lowering the radiators and rotating the cylinder forward on the 2019 and newer bikes.
Here is how we fixed the issue on the trail, and how I have taken steps to prevent it from happening again to me.
    Parts:
    Hose Guards - amzn.to/34xx6QQ
These are part numbers from the 2019 bikes and work to replace the thermostat on the 2020 and newer TPI bikes. I simply use the OEM parts finder on the Rocky Mountain ATV website and look under the 2019 KTM bike.

It looks like you can just double up the hose by cutting an old radiator hose and wrap it around the vulnerable section.

This just happened to my 2018 300 xcw except it broke at the nipple. The 2017-2018 XCW models have the thermostat, but the xc and sx models do not. So this can happen even without the new radiator location. I went with the Tusk hose kit off RMC. This is why I tune into the Dirt Bike Channel. Thanks Kyle

I kept the original design and replaced just the 3" of hose by cutting the pressed clamp. Hose came right off and I used 3/4" hose and two clamps to repair. I like keeping the thermostat and if it wasn't needed, they would have run straight hoses.

Thanks for bringing this up to those that were not aware.
Where those temp tests done with the bikes idling and sitting still? or riding at speed down the trail? Moving fast at riding speed and cooler outdoor temps would give a more true picture of the consequences of a thermostat delete, so just curious. And I suspect a TPI bike is going to fuel quite a bit different throughout the temp range compared to a carbed bike. Anything to be worried about? Maybe not, something to consider.

Great video. On the 150 ktm does it look like the 250sx hose that connects between the rads will fit the 150? The 2 hoses you mention are slightly different for the 150 I believe. The cross over hose is just straight where the 250 sx hose has a bend to go around the cylinder. My question is can I use the 250sx hose as its is 40$ cheaper than the 150 sx cross over hose. Thanks Brian

In cold weather the engine temp may be up to 20° cooler and may affect TPI function to some extent. I did say "may", and it could be very little. Riding trails the engine will be warmer anyway so probably not an issue. Lots of people remove the thermostats as standard procedure.

It seems by lowering the radiators to improve the steering lock, KTM have caused a much bigger issue, that could leave a rider stranded in the middle of nowhere. I remember you measuring the steering locks of KTM's and Beta's and your comments on the poor steering lock the Beta's have especially the RR200. I have a 2020 RR300 and there is no way this radiator issue could happen, the whole setup is so different.

Where did you measure the temperature when you compared thermostat and non-thermostat. If on the radiator then it does not give true picture. Thermostat is supposed to keep coolant circulating in engine without entering radiator until engine is fully warmed up so actually the radiators should stay cooler for longer time. It most likely makes no difference when its warm outside and speeds are low as engine warms up quickly and it opens quickly. Difference comes when riding in cold weather and/or high speeds when cooling effect of radiators might be so good that engine never reaches optimum temperature.

I wouldn’t recommend deleting the thermostat. It’s purpose is not to make the engine warm up faster, it needs to stop the water flowing so it can spend enough time in the radiator to cool. In a hot climate you will be ok until everything heat soaks then you will over heat.

  • @endurox1481
    @endurox1481 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You should always run a thermostat. An engine can actually overheat without one. You are not giving the fluid in the radiator time to cool down before re-entering the engine. Now if the radiator is excessively overrated for the application you may get away with it but in that scenario the engine never really heats up either. On a smoking hot day when running that bike hard it may overheat. Keep an eye out for that. Additionally heat in the engine keep tolerances where needed and also keeps the combustion chamber free of carbon and gunk. You may foul plugs more quickly? Lastly I am uncertain how the modern dirt bike is set up with fuel injection but most fuel injected vehicles have two programs. Open and Closed Loop. When cold the PCM runs one program for cold start etc. Then once the engine reaches operating temperature it runs another. You could be delaying, or even perhaps never achieving closed loop and the PCM will just assume the engine is cold, keep the fuel mixture fat, etc.

If I had just spent 11 grand on a new bike, I'd be so ticked about stupid little issues like this stopping me on the trail or in the middle of a race... if its been a problem since 2019, ktm should have a permanent fix by now before they take your $11,000 and tell you your on your own after 30 days.

Only do this if the bike is always run in warm climates. Otherwise it will not get to operating temperature and will seize!

Love the folks who say it's the end of the world with no thermostat....apparently forgot bikes came without thermostats forever.... It comes down to a slight change in emissions. That's it.

I have ridden 50 miles with the cap loose to keep coolent in a leaking system. The ideal is to keep coolent in the system and prevent a heat related failure. If you have a leek and alow the system to build pressure you will loose coolent faster.

Wow that sounds just crazy enough to work! Thanks for the tip. I can imagine where a weak patch may keep coolant in with low pressure but burst if it gets too hot.
