    The reason why the english version of this song is different is because Sabaton made it that way. En Livstid I Krig is about a singular Swedish soldiers perception of the 30-years-war, while A Life Time Of War is about the entire war as a whole.

    • @Templarofsteel88
      @Templarofsteel88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I usually explain it by saying the Swedish version tells the story from a Swedish soldier's view and the English is more of an outsider's view.

    At the final show of the American tour in Denver, Colorado, they played this in Swedish (everyone pretty much knew the lyrics) but they also played Gott Mit Uns and The Lion From the North. Both in Swedish. Unfortunately, we didn't do so great on those songs in Swedish. We sang the English versions while Joakim sang to us in Swedish. He was disappointed in us. Very much, "Well, you are Americans after all." Despite our fumbling of those two, it was still a wonderful concert. We even got them to play Swedish Pagans twice aling with Carolus Rex. So in our defense it was A LOT of "Yay Sweden 🇸🇪!' for an American concert.

    I agree with you with the Swedish vs English lyrics. I don't speak Swedish, but I love this song and learned it by heart, in Swedish, so if it came to that I could have joined my voice with the crowd also. I also looked up the meaning of each word and it is indeed much more meaningful in its original language.

    I was at this show (sitting somewhere in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage) Just before this clip stated Joakim asked everyone to hold up their cellphones since no one carries around a lighter anymore. Needless to say, this was one hell of a show, sadly this was just before covid broke out and started canceling shows (had for once gotten tickets from 5 shows and 1 festival that year and this was the only one I got to attend)
    Sadly it looks like this year might turn out just as crappy since they have sadly had to cancel their EU tour for next year
    Fun fact, they actually have 2 different tanks that they use as a drum riser for their shows

    Such a crowd interaction always get me as well.
    Being a concert photographer I can shoot sometimes from on stage as well: And experiencing views like here live is so breathtaking, although I am just there to take photos for the band.
    But being up there and performing your own song and getting such a response must be a feeling beyond everything else.
    If you wanna see another example of the most breathtaking crowd interaction:
    Blind Guardian (German Speed Metal band) with "The Bards Song & Valhalla" live at Wacken festival in 2016.
    If you pass Wacken ground nowadays and listen carefully, you can still hear them singing :-)

    the stage was even more epic than just the tank. you cant rly see it from this view but there where sand bags and barbed wires in front of the stage and they had build up bunkers on the sides. the entire stage was made to look like scene from ww1. as someone who was not at this specific show but the one that was in stockholm right after i can tell you that if you ever get the chance you need to go see them live. they are by far the best live band ive seen. and as you probably can tell, hearing this song played in front of a swedish audience just hits differently.

    A wonderful rendition of the song... the camera work from behind really makes you feel a part of it. It is just that Joakim need not have bothered - the crowd would have sung the whole by themselves, one mighty chorus. An anthem allright!
    If you care to try out another recording where the crowd takes over and enhances the story-telling feel, you could, time permitting, try BLIND GUARDIAN "The Bard's Song - In the Forest" / "Valhalla" Live. Some funny guys say, the crowd is still chanting. Btw, that is my 2nd most adored band, so heartily recommended. The bards.

    The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) was a series of military conflicts that took place in Central Europe, mainly in what is today Germany. It ended with a peace treaty signed in the Westphalian cities of Osnabrück and Münster on October 14, 1648, from which it was named the Westphalian Peace.

    What many do not know is that little Sweden at that time in the 17th century with only 1.5 million inhabitants was a warrior nation. It was all about war against Denmark, Russia. Hundreds of thousands of young men had to sacrifice their lives for the king of Sweden. We fought as the Vikings did, conquered .. killed, slaughtered ..Poland we were in conflict with many times. Poor Poles like Charles the 10th ravaged and burned. The Carolines as they were called the three kings were men. The greatest of them and most famous is Charles the 12th. He who went against great Russia and defeated Peter the Great in many battles, despite great inferiors in mantle. The Swedes' tactic was to go against the enemy ... you were not allowed to fire your weapon before you saw the white eye of the enemy. Imagine what a fucking nightmare. What toughness. Sweden was cruel at war. We held together and fought for God and the king. One third of Sweden's young men died in the wars. But without all these wars, Sweden probably would not have existed today.

    If you want to fight for your country after listening to Sabaton, you misunderstood the meaning behind it. Sabaton always brings out the tragedy of war, without fail. But I do agree with how the music makes you feel, it invokes unity and brotherhood. That's the power of metal, and Sabaton are among the greatest.

    It is very interesting how this song evokes feelings of patriotism. It decrys senseless war, it shows all that is wrong with leaders sending young men off to war to die for vain ideals - yet it still makes you feel the need to be patriotic. Very interesting. I feel the same when I hear this. Despite all the folly I would still fight and die for my country though I hope it never comes to that.

    The song also serves a higher historical meaning for Sweden due to endless wars that Sweden participate in the king who was crowned after Carl the 12, said no more wars and that is the reason why sweden became a neutral country
    A lesson learned and it’s sad to see how the world has changed now when Sweden is joining NATO
    Did the politicians wake up the Swedish war bear

    I've always wondered how it would feel to want to fight for one's country. to be brought up in a place that treated you so well, that you'd gladly give your life to protect it.
    I've never felt patriotism, even tho my country has been under attack for a decade now. because it always treated me like crap, and has thrown tens of thousands like me into the meat grinder, while corruption and nepotism created billionaires off of war profiteering.
    sorry, I understand this topic is a bit too heavy for a Sabaton video, and I'm glad you're enjoying their work like I do. it's just that hearing those words set off a chain reaction in my mind. but don't get me wrong, it's refreshing to see people feel patriotism towards countries that actually deserve it like Sweden.

      Nordics are extremely loyal for their countries, regular citizen may not care too much about world politics.. dictators etc, but any of us aint second thinking if they would sacrifice their life for the country. :)

    • @Firynn
      @Firynn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You fight not for the nation, or for the politicant. You fight for your family, to protect them. Later, in the military, you protect your fellow soldiers, your new family, your friends there... War and fights are not heroism or glory. Its about the survive, the hope for a better future, the hope, it will be end, if you do your duty. In that way, millions will fight "for the country" - the media, the propaganda can label it as you wish. For civilians, its necessary, to be "them" and "we", and the winning of "we" over "them" to justify the suffering. But honestly, at the end, you realise, ony "us" exist, and the enemy is also us,. So, patriotism is just propaganda, very little soldier feels it.

    • @sineupp
      @sineupp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Firynn I get what you mean. if the fighting ever gets close to home, I'd gladly fight to protect my family and loved ones, that would give my life some meaning or purpose, at least.
      but I don't feel the same about the country as a whole, because it never felt like it appreciated me, so why throw my life away for it.
      dunno about the propaganda part, I'm almost sure others have felt patriotic on their own, hell I even used to feel it before I grew up to be such a cynic.
      Now, thanks to Sabaton, I only feel patriotic towards other nations when listening to their songs.

    • @SuperDi_
      @SuperDi_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sineupp Blind patriotism is never good anyway, it leads to seeing one's own country as infallible no matter what it does. In my opinion a country must earn their citizens respect and patriotism by treating them and others right. Being a patriot just because you were born somewhere is nonsense. I was born in one country, though my parents are immigrants from another. I've been asked often why I'm not patriotic towards my "home country" (the one my parents come from). That country did nothing for me and would never do anything for its citizens since, similar to you, corruption and nepotism is rampant. The country I live in now has caught me when I fell and has built me up when I was down on my luck. It cares about its people, its infrastructure and environment. Those are reasons to be patriotic.

    • @Ormathon

      Fighting to protect your our own borders and country is one thing. When war comes inside your borders, everyone would pretty much help to secure the country again.
      Also Sweden has in their info pamphlet that they sent out with info if war breaks out: "If Sweden is attacked by another country we will never surrender. All information that the resistance will stop is false"
      So yeah .. taking over Sweden means you kinda have to exterminate the ENTIRE population since politicians are not allowed to surrender
