My good friend's Dad was a structural engineer who was hired to help build the one-eyed Willy pirate ship set. My friend even got to visit the set as a little kid, he was probably 5 years old at the time, so he barely remembers it, but still pretty awesome!
Wow that's pretty cool, never even knew jacking up the building was even the option. But of course the history of the building is the cherry on top. Thanks for sharing.
My grandfather and uncle worked at Warner Bros for over 35yrs and they were part of the crew that help build the pirate ship. I have pictures of them all kneeling in front of the ship.
@@likilikiki I could build the machine if I had a nickel for every time someone wrote something like that. And many of them were comfortable never returning. There must be millions of people that _deeply_ enjoy that time. Millions.
My father was an IATSE Local 44 propmaker for over 30 years. I followed him into the business in 1995. One of my first big features was Batman and Robin on Stage 16 at WB. I spent 13 years of my life on soundstages building sets for film and TV. Everyone in the comments has this romanticized idea of these stages as fantastic places where movie magic happens. When you work there that idea wears off real quick. They are big, hot, dirty, smelly, warehouses.
@@edz8067On top of wood and paint, you add dirt, dust, greens (plant matter), a hundred sweaty people, an unfiltered tank of water, literal horse shit, and many thousands of watts of lighting. Then you shut the door while filming is taking place, and reduce the ventilation. I have worked on stages that had turf put down that was watered overnight. Sound stages smell dank if you are lucky.
I absolutely agree, but we romanticize about we don’t know. Its like when I talk to people about being in the Army and at war. Their perception is completely different from what it is actually like. This here I think is more about the movie and the props and what they invoke from our memories of that period of time in our lives. The building is a symbol of what was created there. I believe you that the conditions were horrible.
To have worked in such an iconic soundstage dor prob the 2nd most popular movie studio in the world and to have worked on sets such as batman etc is fukin amazing what other productions did u work on 👍😊
So cool that you were able to go into soundstage 16. I did the WB tour several years and it they mentioned about SS 16 the information from the Goonies, but obviously couldn't tour because of a production occurring at the time. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
Man, movies are just so amazing; the way they can turn empty rooms into sights and sounds that literally change lives and stay with us forever. There must've been quite an energy stepping into such a historic space of cinematic history. I've always liked the feeling in the air on film sets. Very cool stuff, dude.
I watch the goonies twice over this past weekend. The local theater had it for five dollars and then when the kids came back from their dads house my stepson wanted to watch it so we watched a half of it again later at night before bedtime I wear looks at me and says, are you watching this again? And I said heck yeah I am.
I've been in that sound stage years ago. I was on a tour and I guess nothing was shooting in there at the time. It's a popular stage for the water capabilities it has. It was a truly surreal experience being in there! Goonies never say die!
Seeing this movie in the theater on the weekend it came out back in June 1985 was one of the highlights of my childhood. Definitely a "Name the Most '80s Moment of Your Life" moment. Or, does seeing Back to the Future less than a month later top it?
This was the first movie I can still remember the day at the theater with friends pretty well and coming home and trying to make the ship out of cardboard boxes. E.T. was my first movie, but I can only recall small parts of that day since I was just 5 at the time.
That is extremely cool. Major jealous. That building has seen a lot of amazing things over it's nearly 100 year life (also incredible). It is truly amazing what the VFX wizards and set construction crews can do with sound stages. Absolutely amazing.
I used to work at Sony Pictures who own MGM studios. Their largest stage also has a plaque listing all the movies shot in it, including The Wizard of Oz. I worked on that stage many times for Stuart Little and Hollow Man. They also have a water tank stage.
The stage you mention at Sony (MGM) is Stage 15: 310 feet long by 134 feet wide by 40 feet high and is larger than the above Warner Bros Stage 16 which is 238 feet long by 134 feet wide by 65 feet high; if the floor is removed it takes the height to almost 90 feet high depending on the needs of the film.
the stage with the tank that can be filled is where Esther Williams aqua musicals were filmed I belive thats stage 25 also used to be an outdoor saucer tank she used as well
Ive been in that sound stage. I worked for a security systems company that held a WB contract. It was during the perfect storm filming and I remember water being everywhere even outside the stage doors.
It's crazy to see they raised the sound stage to make it bigger in addition to removable flooring for a water tank. It would explain the flying buttress on the outside of the building which is needed to support the new height.
Wow. I’m pretty jealous you’ve been in there, you’ve shared space with One eyed Willy. The fratellis. The Goonies. Thanks for sharing and making the 9 year old me back in 1985 come out bursting all over again!
My cousin worked at WB studios mid '00s and got my gf & I guests passes on the lot. We walked around the stages some were locked, some weren't. The open sets we walked into were Cold Case, ER (the main hallway way so small/narrow), & Poseidon (mentioned in this clip). I asked an employee what movie was being filmed, as there was a huge ship for the set; he stated Poseidon & that the stage next door (16) had the cap-sized model & he told us excitedly like we were familiar w/ the original film, had no clue what he was talking about lol but responded intriguing.
Pretty cool. Hopefully I get a chance to go to WB one day. I don't have the slightest idea what a sound stage looks like in person. But it did look small. But when it comes to that I know nothing what the average size is or anything of the sort. We appreciate you sharing Kurt. Keep up the great work!!!
I work in the Medical field and I just so happen to work with Dr James Khan in Santa Barbara. He is a novelist who writes books and directs television series. He was the director for 90210. Anyways he wrote the novel for The Goonies and he told me he walked the whole set and just happens to have the original map from the goonies movie, the one that they found in the attic. I asked him Dr Khan how did you get it he said " It just feel into my pocket lol he also wrote the novel Return of the Jedi. and many more True story 100 ... look him up DR James Khan.
Ty bro for this information ( The Goonies ) should get more recognition now a-days even at its time of release it wasn’t well known and people thought cheap movie but even tho the yr is 2023 it’s part of history and this movie should get the reputation it should deserve this movie even to this day basically the only movie that has boobie traps, map, items to be used to find the treasure, pirate ship with treasure we need more movies like the goonies 💯
Wow, did they say how many thousands of gallons of water it took to fill it for the Goonies? Would be interesting to see how they also rigged the water slides and water falls. Corey Feldman has said Michael Jackson also visited the set during filming.
Who else thought they still had that ship up and that's the reason why they don't allow many people in it. Could you imagine how many more people would visit if that ship was still up. I bet the people that work to build those sets get a big laugh when the movies come out because they know everything that went into making it. It's just like actors that will say they have never seen a movie they have been in
Reclusive scavenger claims, " I have the key , to One Eye Willy " Love this stuff. Thank you brother. keep up the great work ! Would it be possible to film the location for Chopping Mall ??
How cool!! I would love to see something actually being filmed but they don't make movies like that anymore! What's the biggest movie in recent years? Meg 2? Even Indiana Jones doesn't feel big like back in the 80's when everything was something truly special.

Thank you Kurt, seeing that meant alot to me!!
Awesome, Kurt! My fav 80's movie.
Golden Age in entertainment - music, movies, TV... Goonies and Back to the Future were PEAK 1980's movies.
I wish Elon would hurry up already with that time machine.
I would go back to the 80's without thinking twice about it.

How cool! So far I have only seen the outside filming locations. Extremely nice addition to the Goonies.
Very cool
So much history in these old soundstages
Wow! That was awesome. Thanks once again for the great work 🇮🇪
The stage looks bigger when the floor is removed. At the east end of the stage is a giant ramp that goes down into what becomes the tank.
i love the magic of soundstages...
That’s awesome man!!!

This Sound stage would make an amazing AR experience! being able to flick through the different productions there.
