I've been watching some of these vintage bus videos recently and all I can say is that I am amazed at how these diesel engines sit for ages and fire up with very little effort other than fuel and batteries; truly impressive motors, not like some of the ones we have today!
We have back home bus old Mercedes seating 30 years ,friend of mine told me he can start i told him impossible , well bus started with new batteries and 50 l of diesel .That engine all mechanical so noting for mice to eat on.
These days I rarely have anything to smile about but seeing these antique beauties moving down the road is an absolute pleasure. Thank you for sharing.
@@elmerfox6872 The earth is about as flat as a basketball full of air. Geesh. It's oblique, meaning it bulges at the equator but it is, in every way, round. I have seen the curvature of it.
plus in great shape for its age, paint is nice, nothing seemed rotted or broken, ran very well, surprisingly fast for a 4/71, she hogged up that grade very nicely, sounded great.. needed very little to get it going again from what I so. the 4/71 is only 4.5 liters, and she did 70 mph with it..up hill.. Imagine a 6/71t in that thing, re manned, 0 hours, bus is great from what I can see, I wouldn't hesitate to invest in her.. drop a nice wad making it perfect again, as long as nothing major is gone on her.. ground up resto, get all the pesky problems solved, go right through the drive line , and re do everything (maybe change to a spicer overdrive for commonality) , don't know what this guys budget is, but the thing is almost a museum piece, perfect candidate for a quality re do..
@@planegaper I didn't realize it's little size, that 471 isn't much bigger than my old 80 Series Landcruiser and the thing actually moves out ok for the size of it. It's an Awesome sight to see it cruising down the road like it was never parked up for 2 Decades. I have a new respect for the Old Detroit.

Wow! I love it. I wish I could drive one of the old GM's! I drove city, charter, and tour buses for over 30 years, and was a collector of bus memorabilia and photos. I loved the old PD's, and yet they were all out of service by the time I started driving professionally in 1973. Mostly, I drove the more recent "Buffalos," until I went to city buses; then later, Prevosts and MCI's in charter and tour service throughout the southwest. At 67, I sit around here in Tennessee and there is nothing for me to do. Best of luck to you on this find!
Boy does that bus bring back memories of the 50s and 60s on the Salt Lake City Buses that I used to take from 21st south to South Temple.. to see movies and walk around Temple Square.. Thank you for bringing this amazing bus back to life.. Of course we didn't have bunks on them.. lol
Love those 2 stroke Detroit diesels. Music to my ears. The largest Detroits I ran were the 12v71 and 8v92. The smallest Detroit I built a fire in was a 2-53 in a grader.

Beauty at its best ! Curves curves always melt my heart , thee guys knew a thing or two when it came to aesthetics, unlike the boxes and hard lines you get today in the name of design ! These vehicles were beautiful and cuddly ! Easy on the eye
Nice old bus. Those 2 cycle Detroit's literally run forever. I ran a 6v92 for 24 years it never let me down. As far as I know it's still going. Two bits of advise, change the oil every 250 hours, and never lug the engine. They have very little oil pressure at low rpms so you have to keep it revved up. Remember they sound like they're screaming because it's a two stroke so the sound is an octave higher than it really is. Oh and never let it overheat that will kill it.
@@mikecarignan7002 They are called Screaming Detroits, but Gary is wrong about why. They don't run an octave higher. They run twice as many cycles as a 4 stroke. A 2 stroke Detroit at 2k rpms has as many combustion cycles as a 4 stroke at 4k rpms.

Man i got to hand it to you, your level of deduction and determination is unmatched. I mean that thing is an absolute relic from a time long ago and long forgotten. To see a guy preserve such a beast is not only rare but miraculous. The love for quality things of yesteryear has become obsolete and replaced with chrome plated plastic garbage. Keeping older vehicles on the road is a VERY respectable talent that is not for everyone. Awsome wrenching and great video god bless;- )
You know what would be just beautifull? If such an old Grey Hound could be restored to its formal glory, and advertise to tour people in it again for the sake of the golden old past.... but that's just me. Would've loved something like that here in South Africa in the beautifull Western Cape. Tour you guys from over there here in my country and show you the beauty (while it still exist, although probably not for much longer, sad to say).
@Open Roader ..., People don't realize that the old Detroit Diesels were virtually Bullet Proof and from the little 2v all the way up to the 16v the rockers , injectors , pumps etc were interchangeable... These 2 cycle diesels were the work horse for the American road ways for decades... a friend of mine owns Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Breakdown 1953? GM tour bus and I know it was still driving and touring w/ a bluegrass band in 2015... Many Blessings , SMR

Take the Greyhound and leave the driving to us! Remember that phrase and it was true! The styling on these buses is much more impressive than the boxes they use today.
I drove Greyhounds in the 80s in Northern Ontario, Canada. MCI 5s, 7s, 8s and a pair of MCI 9s, powered by 6 cylinder engines, on a long term test. Those 2 busses were in the fleet for only a few months, before they were pulled from service, and converted to 8 cylinder powerplants. Driving 'the Hound' provided me with a lifetime of memories!
Can I just say, that bus has a great looking rear end? You just don't see style like that much any more. Also, I'm amazed at how quietly your bus moves down the road. As an aside, so many old bus faces remind me of the Southern Pacific cab forwards. Stumbled upon your videos and I am hooked!

Bus Grease Monkey, I recently picked up a 1947 GMC Motorcoach PDA3703-014. It came with some spare parts, was running and driving when I picked her up. I need to work on the air brake system, namely the air cans for the rear brakes, but I am extremely happy to have made the leap to a classic bus. Love your channel.
That is awesome to those old GM’s on the road getting the job done amazing, brings back memories in Portland and riding the 04’s and 06’s of the rose city transit company when I was a growing up. I always like to sit in the back of the bus on the long seat over the engine to listen to engine run and it was always warm and by the way the smell of diesel fuel, those were the days.
Absolut fantastic that the old lady shakes off her 20 years old dust, and straight out on the highway. No wonder shes screams of joy, good luck to all of you 🧐

As a teen in the 70’s I watched my grandfather work on many V71’s. Looking at and hearing any Detroit diesel brings back fond memories. He worked on a fleet of concrete trucks and my first impression was the diaper they needed for oil drips. Lol
To see and hear the sound of that engine is to go back in time. I was still very young when I traveled here in Brazil, some companies used this bus with these engines and at that time I fell in love with the sound of the engine, it is as if it breathed, as if a huge heart beat inside it ... exciting...

Heh heh, that first start was definitely ASMR for an old mechanic like me. Honestly, I didn't know that they put the 4-71's in the early buses. A lot of late 40's Greyhounds and Trailways buses had inline 6 cylinder 478 International gas engines. I've worked on a few of those and they were serious gas hogs (4-6 mpg tops), and probably didn't have near the torque of that 4-71 Detroit. I'm surprised how well the exhaust cleaned up after it ran for a while. I did hear 1 sticky injector when you first got it going but it seems to have cleared out by the time you got to your fuel stop. You might still want to adjust the rack a bit to get it to fire evenly on all 4 at idle.😉 That's going to be a neat restoration project! Nice work guys!😁👍
The Greyhound Scenicruisers original power plant was 2 4-71 engines each with its own manual clutch going into a common gearbox. When Detroit came out with the 8V71 series in 1957 Greyhound started replacing the dual engine setup with the 8V71. I spoke to a greyhound driver that drove them across the southwest and he had a few breakdowns with the twin engine setup and what he liked is after unclutching the failed engine he could finish the trip. A little slower with only one engine but far better than sitting by the side of the road in the desert. The air conditioner was run by a separate engine. When Greyhound replaced the twin engine setup with the 8V71 they eliminated the air conditioning engine and ran the AC off the main engine. Break down in the desert and it gets hot quickly. Cheers!
danw is that why they lope at idle.. mis-adjusted injectors ? I remember riding the old silver side greyhounds.. and they always had that lope at idle.. and I thought it was a governor problem.. or just how they were !

I have a great story about our 1959 Greyhound Bus and you were a big part of it ,you inspired my fancee if it wasn't for you walking him through on how to work on a 2stroke detroit diesole 671 4104 we would of never traveled in it . It was him and i you should see the engine now i would love to call you and tell you more Thank You so ,so much Cherie & Dan
Jay Leno claims that if my memory is correct that the Rolls Royce airplane engines are what won WW2. I say he needs to give credit where credit is due. If it weren't for Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engines not only in military trucks, buses, marine vessels such as the landing craft used to transport soldiers to the aisle of Iwo Jima on D-Day. The Detroit 2-stroke engines were so reliable and adaptable. You could mount two Detroits end to end and literally double horsepower. You can also change the timing gears in the front of the engine and reverse the rotation. You would never see that with Cummins, Caterpillar, and Mack truck engines. God bless the Detroit.
What do they do with their trains? Powered by American locomotive company products ( Alco Locomotives ) and in the past few years replaced with EMD locomotives to modernize the Indian Railroad system.

We once owned that bus. My husband and dad restored it. It originally belonged to one of my dad's friends. His name was Charlie. Charlie and dad rebuilt the engine. Dad had a 3703 1948. We vacationed one year at Cape Hatterhas. Dad pulled a VW bug behind his and we pulled a VW bug as well. I drove it home to Uniontown Oh from Breezewood PA with the pedal to the metal topping out at 65 mph. For the smaller engine she was a runner. I was amazed when my son called me one night in 2018 and told me he found our old bus. I've since made FB friends with the owners. Can't wait to see the final restore.
First & 2nd impression was Great Find! Beautiful condition! Thought I was going to be disappointed and not see the inside but got a glimpse of the hornet slaughelter lol. Looking forward to more vids, especially fixes and interior fixes... The future here is a camper I’m thinking as it would be most useful, and the rave nowadays.
Great vid. Brung back memories; Road tested a 47' in Port Angeles, Washington. In 2002 or so, it was built by a paper-mill retiree, that spent twelve years building her out and, she was spot on, twin single beds and everything;) Driving West out of PA on the 101, pulling a relatively tame grade she let go. As a truck driver I felt bad, but as a potential buyer I was relieved somewhat. I paid a diesel mechanic $100 to assess her and his response was the girl needed a bigger motor. And for what ever reason we decided to walk away, kind of sad.
I love watching you bring these old busses back to life . It really gives people some confidence knowing there is someone who knows their way around this equipment and if they buy one , can keep it in the road .
The homes in the lawn chair is classic. Give him a beer lol. Jeez that barn and quonset hut are awesome. Looks like everything on that property is supersized. A minor miracle watching that bus leave under it's own power.

Back when vehicles were rolling art pieces companies took pride it making them look so cool I love the tilted back windshields. Cant ever go wrong with a detroit be better with a 6-71. Im impress the brake were not seized

This is the most beautiful style bus I've ever seen. Built in '47, the auto plants were just starting to make civilian vehicles again after making aircraft and tanks during the war.. So, the design of all these late 40's vehicles were really late 30's designs. That was the art deco period, when the most beautiful.. everythings were made. Truly terrific style bus, and I even love the color.
"On a long and lonesome highway East of Omaha You can listen to the engine moanin' out his one note song" (Turn The Page - Bob Seger) I couldn't help thinking of that song watching this old bus go down the highway. I love these old buses. I would love rebuilding them.
At 25:20 they pass a water well drilling rig. THAT sure brought back memories of many decades ago when my late parents owned a well drilling company locally. One of the last water wells that was drilled before the company shut down was at the house I presently live in. Pleasant memories......

I have a 1967 GM TDH in Ontario (30 foot). Planning a trip to the dunes in Michigan this summer. Hopefully we can arrange a place to meet up. Great vids so thanks for that BGM!
It's amazing how you get these old buses running and take them right out on the road to wherever they're going. I would have liked some video inside the rescued bus to watch the driver shifting.
It is nice to see those old buses back on the road again take it on a road trip to Nashville TN and back. In Elmira NY at 654 Sullivan Street sits an abandoned 1991 Ford mustang. The owner is n the military. The car hasn't run in over a year and a half the motor is seized up. The owner tried to remove the rear drive axle to unseize the motor thereby breaking the rear drive axle. My hope s that someone located the owner buys it and fixes it up before it rots away and becomes scrap iron that would be a shame they are highly sought after muscle cars. Looks a lot like a Flxible Clipper from the rear. The old Buick Straight 8’s must have sounded awesome.

As a teen in the 70’s I watched my grandfather work on many V71’s. Looking at and hearing any Detroit diesel brings back fond memories. He worked on a fleet of concrete trucks and my first impression was the diaper they needed for oil drips. Lol
To see and hear the sound of that engine is to go back in time. I was still very young when I traveled here in Brazil, some companies used this bus with these engines and at that time I fell in love with the sound of the engine, it is as if it breathed, as if a huge heart beat inside it ... exciting...
I never get tired of hearing the sound of those old Detroit Diesels 😎 Can’t wait till I have the time to get my 6V92 back on the road. Thanks for sharing

Heh heh, that first start was definitely ASMR for an old mechanic like me. Honestly, I didn't know that they put the 4-71's in the early buses. A lot of late 40's Greyhounds and Trailways buses had inline 6 cylinder 478 International gas engines. I've worked on a few of those and they were serious gas hogs (4-6 mpg tops), and probably didn't have near the torque of that 4-71 Detroit. I'm surprised how well the exhaust cleaned up after it ran for a while. I did hear 1 sticky injector when you first got it going but it seems to have cleared out by the time you got to your fuel stop. You might still want to adjust the rack a bit to get it to fire evenly on all 4 at idle.😉 That's going to be a neat restoration project! Nice work guys!😁👍
The Greyhound Scenicruisers original power plant was 2 4-71 engines each with its own manual clutch going into a common gearbox. When Detroit came out with the 8V71 series in 1957 Greyhound started replacing the dual engine setup with the 8V71. I spoke to a greyhound driver that drove them across the southwest and he had a few breakdowns with the twin engine setup and what he liked is after unclutching the failed engine he could finish the trip. A little slower with only one engine but far better than sitting by the side of the road in the desert. The air conditioner was run by a separate engine.
When Greyhound replaced the twin engine setup with the 8V71 they eliminated the air conditioning engine and ran the AC off the main engine. Break down in the desert and it gets hot quickly.

danw is that why they lope at idle.. mis-adjusted injectors ? I remember riding the old silver side greyhounds.. and they always had that lope at idle.. and I thought it was a governor problem.. or just how they were !

I have a great story about our 1959 Greyhound Bus and you were a big part of it ,you inspired my fancee if it wasn't for you walking him through on how to work on a 2stroke detroit diesole 671 4104 we would of never traveled in it . It was him and i you should see the engine now i would love to call you and tell you more Thank You so ,so much Cherie & Dan
Jay Leno claims that if my memory is correct that the Rolls Royce airplane engines are what won WW2. I say he needs to give credit where credit is due. If it weren't for Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engines not only in military trucks, buses, marine vessels such as the landing craft used to transport soldiers to the aisle of Iwo Jima on D-Day. The Detroit 2-stroke engines were so reliable and adaptable. You could mount two Detroits end to end and literally double horsepower. You can also change the timing gears in the front of the engine and reverse the rotation. You would never see that with Cummins, Caterpillar, and Mack truck engines. God bless the Detroit.

What do they do with their trains? Powered by American locomotive company products ( Alco Locomotives ) and in the past few years replaced with EMD locomotives to modernize the Indian Railroad system.
Just the sound of it does somthing to my Hormones.

We once owned that bus. My husband and dad restored it. It originally belonged to one of my dad's friends. His name was Charlie. Charlie and dad rebuilt the engine. Dad had a 3703 1948. We vacationed one year at Cape Hatterhas. Dad pulled a VW bug behind his and we pulled a VW bug as well. I drove it home to Uniontown Oh from Breezewood PA with the pedal to the metal topping out at 65 mph. For the smaller engine she was a runner. I was amazed when my son called me one night in 2018 and told me he found our old bus. I've since made FB friends with the owners. Can't wait to see the final restore.

First & 2nd impression was Great Find! Beautiful condition! Thought I was going to be disappointed and not see the inside but got a glimpse of the hornet slaughelter lol. Looking forward to more vids, especially fixes and interior fixes... The future here is a camper I’m thinking as it would be most useful, and the rave nowadays.
Great vid. Brung back memories; Road tested a 47' in Port Angeles, Washington. In 2002 or so, it was built by a paper-mill retiree, that spent twelve years building her out and, she was spot on, twin single beds and everything;) Driving West out of PA on the 101, pulling a relatively tame grade she let go. As a truck driver I felt bad, but as a potential buyer I was relieved somewhat. I paid a diesel mechanic $100 to assess her and his response was the girl needed a bigger motor. And for what ever reason we decided to walk away, kind of sad.

I love watching you bring these old busses back to life . It really gives people some confidence knowing there is someone who knows their way around this equipment and if they buy one , can keep it in the road .
The homes in the lawn chair is classic. Give him a beer lol. Jeez that barn and quonset hut are awesome. Looks like everything on that property is supersized. A minor miracle watching that bus leave under it's own power.
He has some health issues but he was out cheer leader and get the front row experience

Back when vehicles were rolling art pieces companies took pride it making them look so cool I love the tilted back windshields. Cant ever go wrong with a detroit be better with a 6-71. Im impress the brake were not seized

This is the most beautiful style bus I've ever seen. Built in '47, the auto plants were just starting to make civilian vehicles again after making aircraft and tanks during the war.. So, the design of all these late 40's vehicles were really late 30's designs. That was the art deco period, when the most beautiful.. everythings were made. Truly terrific style bus, and I even love the color.
I am a recent arrival on this channel and the designs of these old buses are stunning. Thanks for the fun guys.

At 25:20 they pass a water well drilling rig. THAT sure brought back memories of many decades ago when my late parents owned a well drilling company locally. One of the last water wells that was drilled before the company shut down was at the house I presently live in. Pleasant memories......

@@Ganliard modern buses have wheel skirts, and the front of that 3703 is probably a bit worse, the 4103 might not be any worse though.
Where do old busses go to die? They don't! Love your optimism, well for you it's skill and experience. I see an old bus like that and I have an imagination, difference with you; you can make it work.

nothing better than the sound of the Detroits. We had a 6/110 that was a beast. We also had a few old aluminum block 3/53 that would scream.
Cool and stylish design, in that era. Used to have Flxible Clippers in Australia. They were also powered by 4/71's. Later versions did get the 6/71.

That's just a lovely shape to that bus. And remarkable that it stood for 20 odd years and with a bit of work was driveable on the hi way.

It's amazing how you get these old buses running and take them right out on the road to wherever they're going. I would have liked some video inside the rescued bus to watch the driver shifting.

It is nice to see those old buses back on the road again take it on a road trip to Nashville TN and back. In Elmira NY at 654 Sullivan Street sits an abandoned 1991 Ford mustang. The owner is n the military. The car hasn't run in over a year and a half the motor is seized up. The owner tried to remove the rear drive axle to unseize the motor thereby breaking the rear drive axle. My hope s that someone located the owner buys it and fixes it up before it rots away and becomes scrap iron that would be a shame they are highly sought after muscle cars. To let it sit and rot away and become scrap iron would be wrong. Fan of restoring old vehicles Robert Gildea
