Great vid! A few more coop beat em ups for you: Bad Dudes, Jay and Silent Bob Mall Brawl, Final Fight 3 bootleg, Gods & Devils english translation, P.O.W. 2player romhack. 😊 Enjoy!
River City! My brother and I had it and we were the only ones who knew about it. We thought it was a lot of fun. Once you upgrade the moves, it gets suite east though, Dragon Feet turns you into a near god after you buy that book in the first mall.
Haha thanks! My favorite line was “here’s a quarter call someone who cares” and then having to explain to him what a pay phone is and why it cost money to use :)
Man so many great memories of early 90's sleep overs. We'd always order pizza, then stay up way too late playing two player NES. Double Dragon II, Battletoads, & Turtles 2 & 3 were my favorite 2 player beat em ups. Rampage was also a fun 2 player. I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggled with Battletoads. Me and my buddy Justin were really good at two player and did eventually beat it but we also played it religiously for probably over a year before we figured it out.
I had a friend like that in the early 90s. I would stay the night at their house and watch them play one player only video games and only rarely play myself lol. I usually didn’t mind and would look at the instruction booklet or the game guide while also watching him play.
I remember watching my best friend playing the blizzard games, Warcraft 2, Starcraft and Diablo a ton and this mom getting mad that he wasn't giving a turn. I was like, I actually like watching him play.
I think Ikari Warriors 3 deserves a mention somewhere in the list of NES co-op games. Being a mixture of beat'em up, shoot'em up and run&gun, it might be a little difficult to categorize though. It's not a hidden gem or anything, all the different parts are very simple, but it plays well enough and is very decent fun with two players. In any case, it's lightyears ahead of the first two Ikari games on the NES.
I remember my memory of picking up Turtles III at a game store that was closing down for $3! Man I wish I could go back in time and pick up some more great games!
There's actually a bug in Battletoads where the 2nd player's controls are disabled in level 11 so it has to be done solo. then the 2nd player can join in during the final stage
I felt the same way about Double Dragon 3 until about a decade ago when my brother and I were looking for 2 players that we never really played as kids. It’s harder to approach, but once you and a friend fully understand the mechanics it’s actually really challenging but also really fun. I would also say the same thing about Battletoads if the game was actually possible to beat on 2 player, level 11 has the glitch that makes it impossible. Great video regardless!
This video is great, you have done a service to all gamers out there with this one! The entire reason that I was a Sega kid growing up is because there were very few two player co-op games for NES. I even got all my friends to refer to Double Dragon on NES as Single Dragon!
Haha that's definitely the correct title! Also, that must be where I remember it being 2-player, as two of my best friends had the Master System. Thanks! I've started working on the video for Run N Gun games that are 2-Player co-op, so check back in later for some more in this series :)
Great video, can’t wait to see more of these. Thats awesome you got your nephew involved. I agree with Double Dragon 3 and Battletoads being at the bottom. The difficulty of those is insane!
I explain it like this, there's your LIVING ROOM list, and your BEDROOM list. In the living room you have all your co-op games, pick up and play, sports titles, etc...Like you'd have Tecmo Bowl in the living room, because it's easy, anyone can play, and it's co-op. In your bedroom, however, you have Tecmo Super Bowl, because you aren't a savage, but rather a connoisseur of fine Nintendo.
I beat Double Dragon 3 last year on original hardware. Once you get the other characters to switch to, it makes it a tad easier. The whole last stage you're trying your best to conserve energy and hope you have enough for the final boss Princess Noiram.
Love these videos! You forgot about "Downtown Special - Kunio Kun (J)" But maybe overlooking it because of the region..? Still it's a awesome game that more people should know about!
(I was going to comment on Ikari III also being a beat-'em-up, but I see someone mentioned it already.) It's funny how I think of beat-'em-ups as being a popular genre back in the day, but there were only seven (or eight) games of this genre on the NES! Maybe it's because Double Dragon, Battletoads, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were so popular back then, and played so often, that it just seemed like the genre was more common than it actually was. Also, it's interesting that you didn't know of River City Ransom back then, when it was very commonly known in my circles. On the flip side, there are NES games that I certainly know of, but haven't seriously played myself (Battle Of Olympus, Guardian Legend, Magic Of Scheherazade, and Rygar, to name a few) that are well-known by others. It's cool that we all had/have these different experiences even if we all love the NES!
Just subscribed! I love this idea. Been trying to compile a list of all the co-op nes games, as well. I made a website for co-op games lists just so I have a place to reference when I wanna play a game. Are you still working on videos for this project?
Oh yeah?!? I'd love to see it! I've got an NES list going but I'm not 100% sure I've got all of them. Now that you mentioned it, my buddy was just over to record footage for all the co-op sports titles so stay tuned for that one!
great video and list this brings back good memories of playing this titles with friend i will keep watching the other list and a couple of videos from your channel
Nice video and a good rant in the beginning! Looking forward to more co-op-videos (I saw the run n gun videos too). I'm wondering if there could be some game genie codes to make Battletoads more playable, at least there should be a functioning code to add friendly fire. Well keep it up, you got a new subscriber from Sweden!
Hey thanks! Hopefully I’ll get another co-op video recorded over Christmas. The best genie code for Battletoads is either Infinite Life or the Level Skip, but then it kind feels like you didn’t suffer enough ;)
One you missed is the new Jay and Silent Bob game. It's a recent creation, so it might not have been out when you made this. It's a decent beat 'em up. It's weird people are still making NES games, and hacking them into new games. I just got back into my NES because 2 button controls are easy and fun for my little nieces and nephews.
Love it!! These ranked lists have been such a joy to watch and I honestly find myself agreeing with most of your picks! It’s great to see the Manhattan project getting some well-deserved love because that is such a great game and it is easily better than the arcade game in my opinion although I have nostalgia for both! Battletoads Double Dragon is another gem and they really did correct the 2 player mode. Funny enough I actually prefer the original Battletoads game by myself but with two players you definitely want the sequel! Last note is that I honestly love Double Dragon 3 and it’s a game I actually beat with a good friend as a kid! If you can learn the different moves and use Nunchuks on the first boss of the game that’s the key to advancing to stage two and getting over the hump so to speak. Regarding Marion the ending of DD2 is pretty wacky but it does explain things and why she is alive in the third game. 😉👍
Totally Rad in my opinion is a very underrated gem for NES. Magic john to totally rad "bill n ted" translations make it a 90s time capsule almost. Would love your thoughts on this game im not sure anyone actually owned back in the day.
