Linux is none of the things people say, but it is still my favorite for a variety of other reasons and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

It seems that half of the Windows running code base is designed to prevent you from doing certain things until you've paid money or to try to up-sell you on rubbish that Microsoft is currently pushing, like Edge or Copilot or friggin' games. How much faster could a system run if all that redundant code could be stripped out.
Yes, Chris has his debloat tool but so much is baked into the fundamental system and is not in add on packages that can be stripped out easily.

It's funny, in my case I was part of the betas of windows 10 and windows 11. Windows 10 felt broken and especially because the last days of 8.1 were good and very underrated. Over time 10 became decent until they started filling it with garbage. In the beta of 11 things were bad and I continued using the system until the official launch in which things... got much worse.
I went back to W10 and every 6 months I checked w11 and even though I saw that it crashed less I felt like the drivers were bad since games I used to play were going horribly wrong from time to time. I stopped trying 11 and 3 months ago I made the decision to go to Mint (I don't regret anything)
My brother called me a Windows 11 hater, he bought a new laptop that came with it installed and it was pretty funny to see him experience the same set of bugs as me to see him go back to 10. I can probably persuade him to try Mint or Kubuntu by the end of the year

Windows was great. It was fun downloading drivers, installing the version that you want. The Win 95 look and feel, the start menu was a great addition. 98 was nice since they started to use 16 bit icons. Not much was improved after that except for under the hood. For some reason, Win 8 took the colored icons away. Anyway, the goal of MS has always been to push the internet, to make it the future. They even design their pages to look flat and colorless and I don’t get it. A lot of people don’t understand that the PC is a personal space, just like your house or car or how you dress. They should make the OS highly configurable. This is the area that Linux gets it right. Also, most people are tired of watching ads. I am tired of flash animations that slow my internet connection on my 33.6 Kbps and run my Cyrix P200+ at 100%. On quite a lot of pages, 50% of the area is all ads. Placing ads in Windows is crossing the line.

Back in 2007, I believe, MS joined the PRISM program by the NSA, which grants warrantless wiretaps into user data on nearly all major internet services. Apple later joined I believe in 2012 or so. If it wasn't for the new co-pilot and recall features being pushed onto the users MS could have covertly gotten away with the wiretap compliance.. As a commentor on another one of Chris' videos stated, if you've signed any NDAs, run or do any investigative journalism into any of the elites and wish to stay alive, Windows 11 will not be a good choice. The recall/co-pilot features are just the dead give-away of Microsoft's true intentions when they say something like "Protection of your data is our highest priority" or whatever. Yeah, protection for whom? To be totally secure one must not use the Internet, but Linux has at least given me some tools to isolate personal from public. I'm curious about Tails, Cubes, and other more secure containment based OS's, as well as giving a run with FreeBSD someday. Linux, to me, (using OpenSuse for the past 2+ years), just feels right. The sky is literally the limit and I love that about Linux in general. Power to the people. Tesla would be proud.

The thing I miss most about Windows is customization. Remember when W98, Me/2000 or XP came with different themes. You could change the font, the title bar, the colors, the cursors and all that good stuff. I loved dicking around with that as a kid. And while I also enjoy a nice looking stock experience, having it be my own always felt really nice.
Since Windows Vista, the only customization was the theme color of the glass (but you were still able to revert to Classic) and since Win8, the only adjustment you got was a base color for the titlebar. You can probably still dick around in the registry to change things and with a lot of extra tools, you can probably make it even better. But doing this is an exercise in patience once an update rolls around.
They had a theming system, but they locked it down so hard that it became really annoying to deal with. And that's sad.
Edit: My Linux Mint install had Bliss as a wallpaper for a while and still uses the Windows XP sounds for logon/logoff, alerts, USB connections, etc. because I like them.

I like to see how Linux has grown from the 20 Floppies to several GiG! Ventoy has made life so much easier and iVentoy is even better, if you have a spare laptop with a good network. Time was Linux required a college degree in Computers but now my low-tech wife has been happily using it in the Living Room as a media PC on a 50" screen with wireless keyboard/mouse! I'm happy!

Literally the one single reason I use linux is window managers. We can go on and on about the pros and cons of each OS but at the end of the day it really does just boil down to that for me. I have tried pretty much all of the window manager-esque programs I've come across (komorebi easily being the best of the bunch), but you're just fighting against how windows wants to handle the windows so you get weird behavior and bugs all the time.
Just give me a solid no nonsense (animations, funky round corners, etc) dynamic tiling window manager and I'm happy. Some people distro hop, I window manager hop haha.

it's amazing to me how different people's journey with Linux as a desktop can be. I've been on Linux for 5.5 years now, this is my 3rd install ever and one of those was because I built a new PC. One of my first "oh no" moments was breaking Kubuntu with apt autoremove while following a guide and having to ask how to reinstall the desktop. That install kept on living until a release upgrade script failed to check whether snap was even installed. I've only had my machine crash on me twice in the last 3 years since then, it recovered without a full reboot by itself one of those times and only a single time has a kernel update caused my machine to no longer boot. Took me half a decade to need to learn how to debug that and a friend of mine fixed it with her first guess (after teaching me how to use grub's boot menu lol).

You know, Chris, we are kind of in the same boat.
When I got my hands on a computer back in the day (after being envious of other kids having Amiga, C64 and other cool stuff), a 286 that was already obsolete when I got it, that really sparked something. Unlike other guys, I was not interested in motorcycles or cars or whatever, they just made noise and went forward, but the whole computer stuff was something else entirely. A machine that could seemingly do anything. So of course I tinkered with Dos and Windows and whatnot and broke just about anything I could on a software level and reinstalled the OS and rinse and repeat. Never became a coder, but loved to tinker.
Fast forward to present day, I use Linux. Haven't touched Windows in years outside of my workplace, because no reason to. The reasons I like it is pretty much the same as you, which is that the OS adjusts to my needs and wants and not the other way around. I can strip it to as much of a barebones system as I want or need, replace most tools and, unlike with Windows, absolutely nothing changes unless I explicitly change it. And that's what I like about it. It's a tool, does what I tell it to and absolutely nothing else. I don't have to think about it, I don't have to worry about it.
Imagine if with your car all the radio and other settings would randomly reset every week or so, and you would have to readjust your seat from a default to what works for you every single, people would hate it and shit on the bad design in every possible review and car magazine. That's pretty much a Microsoft car. Then imagine that it would be the only car brand sold in the local dealerships and if you wanted anything else, you would have to order some really niche brand from somewhere else or buy a $200,000 Apple car.
Perhaps the only thing I might disagree with you would be the stability, but then again, I'm not one of the Arch fanboys. I run Debian stable as my daily driver on the desktop. It just works and updates don't tend to change or break anything. It works for me, because I don't have any eccentric needs regarding software.
I used to do a lot of distrohopping and I did use Arch too. Arch is a fine distribution for people who want the bleeding edge, but being constantly on the lookout for a potentially breaking changes while updating packages was not for me. And updates broke stuff more than once. Or at least that's the way it was years ago when I used it, I don't know if that's still the case today. At some point it slowly dawned on me that Debian stable was the thing for me, mostly because it does what I want and that's it. Over time I have just stopped giving a shit what version of what software I have as long as it works. Does it take a while to get a new version of whatever? Yes, but for the most part I just don't care. What I care about is that nothing breaks or needs fixing, because I want my tools to just work. Similarly, I don't know how many horse powers my car has or how different stuff under the hood works and I really don't care as long as it works.

Desktop OSs are like character creation systems in RPGs. Windows and Mac ensure stability and compatibility by giving everyone the same character and you can only change their cloths. Every Linux distro gives you a unique default character and allows you to change everything, whether it makes sense or not, and that's why it's so easy to screw up. That's what I did with my first dozen Linux installs. Using only the GUI, I got real good at created 3-headed, 5-eyed, 7-legged, upside-down space fish.

While using one of the notebooks we share at the office, I had everything set up to show something to a client at the end of a meeting. I closed the lid of the laptop, started the meeting and then I open the lid less than 30 minutes later to show my client what I wanted to and BOOM, Windows 11 decided it was a good time for an update. Needless to say, that meeting did not end well. I should have the t480s by Monday at the latest and it's gonna run Linux exclusively. If I didn't need VSTs for work on my desktop at home, it would have been running Linux long ago. For now, Bazzite is on a separate drive for gaming.

Sure there was another learning curve to surmount but I have sub'd the Mint project a few times and I am happy. I still have a couple of dual-boot machines which I need about once-a-year when arguing with some techies about why their website is broken. I find it interesting that nascent programmers seem to think that everybody uses Edge and Windows. Thank you for actually being willing to not just parrot the lies everyone else says. Yeah, Linux is lovely if you are using it with very well known hardware and for common, maybe specific niche tasks (yes, gaming still falls under this category), but with my experience, currently dual-booting Debian and Windows 10, as well as having two dedicated laptops running Linux Mint for over a year, I've learned it's best used as dedicated machines for dedicated tasks. For my uses, say digital art, a dedicated Linux laptop is almost perfect, with 1 minor quirk I can work around by changing some settings in the display manager. However...
If you have niche hardware, or you want very precise control over that hardware, I either haven't found a solution yet, or it straight up doesn't work. Soundcards are an absolute nightmare, especially their proprietary software features (I've used Easy Effects and changed settings in ALSA, no dice). And AMD... As much as they are supported and as much as it is just plug and play for general use... I have yet to find anything that even comes close the the driver suite that AMD provides for Windows uses, and as someone that uses Radeon Chill (a requirement for me) and tinkers with under-volting and whatnot, from my experience, Linux or I, still have an uphill battle to climb.
I really want to use it as my daily driver because I have lost all faith in Microsoft actually letting me have control over my PC experience going forward. However, with lack for major hardware features that no distro apparently supports, and the lack of precise, even somewhat easy to find solutions for controlling settings for my GPU, it's not quite there for me yet. Best I can do, is still use a stripped down version of Windows 10, at least for now.

I used Windows as my main OS up to 7. Then I tried 8. Oh, shit! What a disaster. Since I had fooled around with Linux previously I knew how good it could be. It took me about 6 months to find a good distro and set up and swap over fully to Linux. But I never regretted it. Goodbye borked updates and mysterious crashes!
I have more control over my OS than I ever had with Windows. I still keep an old PC with windows on it, but I rarely need to use it these days. If you can master Linux Wine you do not need Windows at all.
About 97% of the software I use on my desktop is native Linux software. And I could not be happier. If you are not afraid of the learning curve, then just do it.
And despite what you say about security and being stable, I found that it was the security and stability that made me want to stay with Linux.
Is it stable? The distro's I use are more stable than the Windows versions I had used in the past.
Has Linux ever crashed on me? YEP, sure has! But only when I do something silly or have hardware issues.
Is it perfect? Nope! Has minor issues all the time. But is better than being F'd In The A by Microsoft.
Is it secure? It can be if you know what you are doing.

    Dear author!
Here is a short story of how I became a system administrator and programmer! In the mid-90s, I bought my first computer, a Pentium with a clock speed of 166 MHz. A real fire horse, in those days. Somehow it turned out that I had to reinstall Windows every two weeks. Then, when I discovered that I did not have 166 MHz, but 150 MHz, overclocked to 166 by an unscrupulous seller, my troubles stopped, but thanks to multiple repetitions of the Windows reinstallation process, and also numerous attempts to configure something on glitchy hardware, I acquired invaluable experience and a profession. I now install Linux when I never want to go back to configuring a computer again. On my friend's laptop, Linux stopped working along with the laptop itself when his cat pissed on his laptop to death. Obviously, the hardware and operating system will behave differently. On the same hardware, you can get different stability depending on the operating system. But on working hardware, provided that before entering any command requiring root rights you sit on your hands for at least 5 minutes, Linux is unshakable, IMHO. I use Debian.

On my current Windows workstation I have to constantly fight against C being full (currently 5 GB free of 100 GB), while D is almost empty (currently 325 GB free of 380 GB). If Microsoft wants to put a crapping donkey on your desktop the next update, they can just tell you to eat chow and deal with it if you don't like it. That is why I use Linux, even if there is that learning curve which I have long since passed and it didn't really take long either. If a distro does something we don't like, we can just fork it or change it. Linux is "free" as in libre, freedom. You are not chained to a massive for profit company making decisions you don't agree with.
If Windows decides to put something horrible in your computer, it's: "make it unstable and break it by hacking into it and turning it off", or having to *deal with it.* These are your only two options, and neither is acceptable. - Convenience is nice, until you look around and realize that you are in a cage. The door is open, you are not there against your will. And I would rather leave the cage personally, but I get that most don't. It's how they get you, after all. I say build your own comfort without the bars, it's frustrating in the short term, but in the long term? You will love yourself for having done it.

I use Linux because I am an advocate for free open source software. Free open source software empowers users with freedom and transparency by making the source code publicly available, allowing anyone to use, modify, and distribute it. FOSS is more community-driven while corporations main priority is their own interests, which may lead them to make decisions that may or may not be good for their users.
Linux and FOSS removes barriers and gives more opportunity to less fortunate people because Linux works better on old hardware, Linux doesn’t have strict TPM requirements introduced by Microsoft to artificially boost new PC sales at the expense of PC users, and open source software is free to use and learn from by inspecting the source code.
Privacy is another reason I use Linux, Microsoft is in the business of selling your data so it is in Microsoft's benefit for you to use their operating system and their services. MS has every incentive to push their software and services to try and get you to use their software like how they try to fool you into thinking Edge is superior in Windows, how they try to push you to create a Microsoft account to hide or remove the ability to create local accounts when setting up modern versions of Windows, the various ways they collect your data within Windows by default & the annoying process to disable it all.
Lastly, with Linux I have control over my own system. I can specifically configure and customize anything to have my PC configured exactly the way I want it to be. I can configure all the software I want to use without having to remove pre-installed software that I didn’t want on my PC, etc.
Also, as I Linux user I won’t have to deal with microsoft bs.

Lack of sleaze is the main reason to use Linux. And you can configure Linux Desktop to be what you want or need. I don't like BS corporate drama so I will make some effort not to use Microsoft.
But Chris, I kind of wonder about you talking stability with an Arch logo displayed: I thought the distro was a tinkerer's paradise...

I personally use Kubuntu as my daily driver now, I have personally never used Arch, yet. But, I definitely hear Arch is not bad if you like tinkering, but if you want something, that just works. Imo even Linux Mint does a great job, but I like the KDE Desktop more, so I went with Kubuntu..

    1. Freedom & flexibility

    3. Minimal system requirements
    4. Cost efficiency

  • @briappa6670

That's basically my view too. Everyone keeps talking about the security, stability and stuff, and for me it's just fun. The freedom. I never had problems with stability on windows, and it is secure enough for me, and it is actually more reliable from my experience. Newcomers often get pushed back by many distro options, but for me, distrohopping is one of the best parts of using linux. Still, linux is not my main os, i use it on the side, because it's not worth it for me (at least not yet), but I have so much fun just tweaking and customizing, that i couldn't have with just windows. I'd probably change to linux if it was more popular and anything actually worked on it, but i think it will never become perfect because of the mindsets of both linux devs and users.

If you’re worried about app compatibility when switching to Linux, there’s a simple and highly effective solution that most people overlook: run Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC in VMware Workstation on any Linux Distribution. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC is official, lightweight, free of bloat, and avoids forced updates, making it perfect for a VM. Plus, with VMware’s 3D graphics acceleration, Full GPU passthrough, USB passthrough ( means virtual machine can use GPU and USB ports ) and full peripheral support, you’re not emulating, you are virtualizing and you’re running Windows with near-native performance , it’s as good as running native windows in every aspect. Use Linux for everything that runs well natively and with wine , proton etc -many apps and games do-but whenever you hit a roadblock with a Windows-only program, just fire up the VM. This way, Linux stays your main OS, and Windows is only there when you absolutely need it. No more dual-booting headaches or compatibility fears-just a seamless, efficient workflow where your day is never ruined by software limitations.

"I just need the operating system NOT getting in my way"
    Me in any Linux distro:
-Wayland not working with NVDIA (Crashes, window borders behaving weirdly, constant freezes)
-Other partitions ask for password on system start up (graphical start)
-Basic apps are now sandboxed so when I look for the files I saved are nowhere to be found
-Audio stops working from time to time
-My Android phone keeps disconnecting via USB cable (no issues on Windows)
-Widgets can break the entire desktop if I don't configure it correctly and pray to the gods
-Sometimes I hit "shut down", get black screen and the computer never turns off
All of this on a brand new install so... yeah... totally not getting in my way.
Still, I prefer all of those quirks than using Windows (Mac isn't even an option here)

Privacy is a tricky thing to do properly. If I'd get rid of my phone, stop using google services, then maybe... but most people can't or won't do this. So using Linux for privacy is a bit of a joke with all these other massive privacy issues.

One of the things I hated about Windows was every couple new releases, I'd have to upgrade my computer which meant, build myself a brand new machine. I was okay with that because I love building myself a whole new machine. But I ended up with a pile of still functional computers in my closet that STILL work just fine. I have one from 1998 that I had Windows 98 and Windows 2000 on it in that closet. Nothing is wrong with it. So, when Windows 10 came out, the PC I had Windows 7 on ran so great. Then I put 10 on it and it was a dog! So I said, 'screw it! I'm putting Linux on it'. And I was done with Windows. That computer lasted until October 2024. It was about 16 years old and it ran Linux like a champ until it keeled over.

I've always hated the argument that Linux and free software is not about privacy just because you cannot make yourself invisible without a lot of effort. Privacy is not about being invisible, it is about closing your door when you pee. It is about decency and setting realistic boundaries rather than going into insane levels of obfuscation. That is why I refuse to use Windows or Chrome. Not because it is impossible to fingerprint me if I use Librewolf, but because I don't feel like my privacy is respected. I don't feel like their customer, I feel like their victim when I use their products.
