Very interesting test Will. However, I will have to test it myself, because of cross contamination with your dropper and mixing stick. Thanks for sharing.

Hardware store lacquer thinner is industrial paint solvent, basically. Laquer thinner is good for lacquers, but when used on acrylics, (and many styrene plastics now are acrylic modified for stability and hardness) it practically melts it, its pretty "hot" stuff.

Sir,you just mixed all 5 products with your dropper, should you have at least rinsed it first?just sayin, because I noticed just a bit stayed every time you dipped into another product..

I use flat and gloss MM acrylics with mr hobby leveling thinner and get great results. Both go down incredibly smooth. I tried x20a originally and it did not work nearly as well.

would not have used the same dropper for each test. residue from each thinner is present each time this way.

Another useful test. I swear by x20a but I ran out recently and had heard ipa and screenwash could be used. I was doubtful but gave it a go with tamiya paint and it works flawlessly.

So Ultimate Airbrush Cleaner (H2O + alcohol) and Tamiya Acrylic Thinner (H2O + alcohol) work best to thin acrylic paint. Sounds like we can save alot of money by just using water and alcohol! THANKS!!

First of all, however, you have left them sitting for a while, Tamiya is "hotter" than the others, not that it is best for the MM paint, however, Tamiya though acrylic is not the same as MM from what I've read. Tamiya states clearly on their website that their x20 can be used but that the Tamiya Lacquer thinner is also good for thinning their acrylics. I use the Lacquer thinner and it provides an excellent finish, they do not get thicker as your test showed for using Tamiya Lacquer thinner with MM. I'd guess the carrier on the MM is not the same as the Tamiya. There is a difference between acrylics. Remember, Mission Models for instance clearly states they are water based, but if you look up Tamiya, its clearly a Lacquer based paint. So it proves I won't be using Tamiya Lacquer thinner for MM paint, but I will try rubbing alcohol of different % until I find the right fit. I figure tge70% may offer a slower drying time or a much level glossy finish.

TESTORS has a chart that recommends thinning Acryl 30% with their thinner, so 50% may be just right, for Wills setup, I'm going to try 30% just cause I'm a minimalist.

Hi Will. Have you ever had issues with Model Master Paints ? For some reason all three of my new Model Master Acrylic paints peel when they been dried for over a week after being airbrushed and thinned with Model Master Acrylic thinner. What am I doing wrong? I used Tamiya masking tape on it after it’s fully dried and all three colors peeled or flakes off. Is it because I didn’t use a primer ? My other paints such as Tamiya work and stick fine. Is it because I thinned too much? Thanks.

  • @lesgl

I've found the flat Acryl colours thin and spray well with Tamiya thinner but the semi gloss ones just won't spray properly at all either too thin or too thick and spit all over the place with the airbrush..Leslie

    Will very interesting test indeed.
Can I say if you use the UMP thinner chart MM acrylic is a 35% mix thinner so a 50% would make it thinner. So seeing if 35% mix is thinner than Tamiya or equal too. Tamiya may need a few more % mix to match the %0/50 MM mix. Just another test that would make it a little more clear.
UMP have different recommended mixes so it would be appropriate other thinners will work too if portions are correct. Not including lacquer thinners.
Sorry for late reply only found your page and enjoying greatly great work work

No worries. Glad you are enjoying my stuff. As for thinning ratios, even Paul will tell you that those are just guidelines and your results may vary. Figure out what ratios get you the results you want and just run with it. Being consistent from project to project is what's important.

Last night I wanted to play with my airbrush and I rarely use MM acrylics. Anyway, I stirred up one of the bottles really well, mixed the paint with Testors acrylic thinner and had nothing but problems from the very beginning. I thinned it some more and it still didn’t work. I finally had it so thin that it was running even when spraying it onto a paper plate. I dumped the paint out, shot acetone through it to clean it out good, took the same paint, only this time I used acetone to thin it. It sprayed like a dream. Not once did the nozzle clog, no spatters, nothing. It worked just like it’s supposed to. I have no clue why it didn’t work with Testors acrylic thinner, but it sure worked fine with acetone. And this has nothing to do with MM acrylics, but I did find it interesting. I watched a gentleman reduce his acrylics with Windex. That was pretty surprising to me. I’d never heard of that being used for a reducer, but it worked, he sprayed the paint onto a piece of paper and it sprayed just fine. Anyway, I’ll stick with Tamiya acrylics and their lacquer thinner for my models.

Would distilled water work with model master? Overall which one of those would work best? Should i use tamiya, model master, or vallejo air?
