Review of Wagner Flexio 590 Paint Sprayer

  • I give the Wagner 590 Power Sprayer an 8.5 out of 10. Here's a review and walk through on how to use. Overall, I really enjoyed using it. I was able to save a lot of time and achieve a good result. I have since used it to stain cabinets and it did a great job there as well. My only gripe is that it takes a long time to clean; I assume most sprayers do. Also, the power cord is too short. I recommend this product. Check out my TH-cam channel for more DIY videos. I have every step of fully renovating this condo. Enjoy!

    I just bought the 590 and really appreciate your video. Just makes it easier to see someone else use it. Thanks for showing prep information too and seeing you did not need a brush. Thanks!!!!

    Okay let me help everyone out:
    1. When you get your gun, make sure that all of your pieces fit securely and if there is a packing(o-ring) required anywhere, make sue it is in and not pinched.
    2. Make sure that you thin the paint that you are using in a separate container and make sure that it is mixed very well.
    3. Before putting the THINNED paint into the sprayer, use a strainer to keep any clumps from getting into your feed line and clogging it or making the spray inconsistent.
    4. Know your settings, adjust the flow/air power/pattern before you start spraying on target.
    5. You are better off spraying 3-4 thin coats for a nice smooth finish rather than just swamping it on there.
    6. Establish a nice smooth spray pattern that overlaps about 50% and don't stop while the trigger is pulled.
    7. CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN your gun when finished and wipe your nozzle every couple of minutes.
    Note: for thinning, use the appropriate thinner... if it is a water based paint, thin it with water. Hope this helps.
    I use to paint helicopters for a living and have dabbled with quite a few HVLP guns and even though this is nothing like it, the same concept applies.

      Great tips! I just purchased Rustoleum transformation for cabinets. It says it is water based.
      Question - what is your recommended of water mix? The Rustoleum kit only comes in 1 quart.

    • @BublisC
      @BublisC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Usually about 5-10% of your overall paint. It is easier to use millimeters since it is measured at .01 on a cup. Make sure that you add a little bit at a time and stir well to make sure that the entire body of paint is thinned. When you pull your stick out of the paint, it should not be "oozing" off of your paint stick but also should not be running off like water. You want to find the happy median :) To make things even more difficult... each paint/sealer is different and every gun sprays different. Hope this helps.

      Question! I'm thinking about to purchase one of these sprayers to spray paint the baseboards and door/window trim. How wide would I have to mask around the baseboards so it doesn't over spray on the walls or floor?
      Thanks

      @MarkJauregui  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      stob82 you're able to get the spray fairly narrow and it's easy to control. You'll need to protect a minimum distance around the area, maybe as little as 10 inches

    Thanks for the review. I was on the fence getting this but after watching your review I took a shot with it. Can't be happier, worked perfectly for what I needed it for (painting shutters). This thing worked so good the only downside was it painted so fast, I had to sit around waiting for it to dry before putting a second coat on, ha!

    I used my new 590 today spraying stain. Thinned just a tad and worked great. Being disabled it's very hard for me to use a brush. I tried 2 separate times to stain 7 6x6 porch posts. I'd get one done in about an hour w a brush and have to stop . I sprayed all 7 posts plus our swing frame in about an hour and a half. Yeah I'm hurting but was able to do much more and a better job faster. At first I was getting some splatter but then I read to hold the trigger and get the motor running then pull it all the way. After that I didn't have splatter problems. Well worth the money. For $110 you can't beat it.

      one shot Ive since used it once more to paint a shooting house for hunting. It's 6'x6'x6'. I painted inside and out in roughly 30 min. And that was taking a few minutes in between coats. It didn't too long for each to dry as I applied them lightly. I found it was better not to put any thinner in it as I did the stain. It's been out in the weather since a few weeks after my first post. We've had hail storms, windstorms etc and the paint is still holding good. So I do believe this painter is excellent! I hope you enjoy yours

      Zach Barnhart make sure to back brush the fence so the stain soaks in. A lot of fences that are only sprayed start to chip away in bad weather and fade. Basically the golden rule is to back brush stain so it soaks into the fibres of the wood and give a long lasting coating. But if you don't care much YES you can just spray the whole thing out and it will be fine until it's tested in sun wind rain freezing. Hope your project went well , always nice to see a well kept place.

    Good review. You can apply a VERY LIGHT COAT of WD-40 (parting agent) with a clean rag to the exterior only and this will assist in paint removal from the gun during clean-up. Do not apply on tip or run through the gun.

    I used mine for the first time yesterday. There was a bit of a learning curve, but after I passed that it worked really well. Someone should mention that it's pretty heavy and one needs some pretty good upper-arm strength to handle the sprayer. No need for me to go to the gym as long as I'm using this!

    • @MarkJauregui
      @MarkJauregui  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you said that. I mention it in a follow up video. The sprayer is not heavy alone but when filled with paint and especially over long uses, it starts to feel very heavy.

      bizz le Hey, just thought I say that the instructions tell us that these sprayers are not made for a single pass. They require at least two passes to fully cover. So, what you said is about par for the course with these types of sprayers. Of course, some people have different results too and can do it in a single pass with practice. I seem to require two passes though....

    • @metaspherz
      @metaspherz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      bizz le BTW, I also have used rollers for great results but they splatter paint all over the place and I used more paint than I did with a sprayer. I got more on me with a roller. I used less plastic and tape though which cut down on the prep time. I rented a paint sprayer last time and liked the results and time saved so this time I'm buying a sprayer -- a good one I hope! But I still have rollers just in case....

    I will buy this tomorrow! I am painting pickets outside so its ok if it is a sloppy job, no trim work to worry about. What would be great would be a tutorial on how to clean this. These videos make it so much more easy than trying to read tiny printed instructions which are in 5 languages. Also, what about thinner for oil based. My luck, I would go to buy "thinner" and there will be 30 different kinds. Thanks!

    Hi, I agree about the power cord on Wagner sprayers. Of course it is inevitable that an extension cable has to be used with any power tool in any large room, but with my Wagner sprayer (which I actually am happy with) it is really too short. Twice the length would have been appropriate.

    Thanks for your great review! I'm still deciding which paint sprayer to buy. There are a lot of great choices but the prices can get way too high on some of them for just residential use. The Wagner 890 so far is my #1 choice due to its design and storage features. But I could buy 2 Wagner 570 sprayers for the cost of it. I'll be doing the interior and exterior w/ small garage. Time to do the project isn't an issue but I'll have help to do the job so using the sprayer must be easy for the less skilled too.

  • @TheMonkini
    @TheMonkini 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    bought one of these and had to return it. once paint dries the gun stops working and if it does it stars spitting all over the place. what starts being a nice and neat work ends up with spits and blobs. the issue is that when you stop for more than 5 minutes the paint dries and the pressure in the container keeps building, as soon as you hit the trigger ---mayhem; the machine starts spitting dry paint and watered down paint at the same time. the way to solve this would be to have some kind of purge valve to release the pressure when you stop the gun. but wagner engineers need to figure it out.

    • @MarkJauregui
      @MarkJauregui  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that final clean up is a disaster. Do all the prep work before starting and spray all the way through the job. If you take a break over 10 minutes, you'll want to scrape the area around the spray tip clean, a screw driver makes quick work of it. The paint should not dry in the gun but it can block the tip. Should be an easy quick fix.

      I bought the flexio 590 and that works great, I have painted a garage with un thinned latex paint with no problem. Then used the precision sprayer that came with it to stain a deck, great product made staining fast and very efficient, only used 1 gallon of stain and sealer in one, used to take 2+ gallons with a roller and brush. The clean up has not been that bad for me, I can get mine looking close to new in about 15 minutes.

  • @markpaskett3696
    @markpaskett3696 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mark, thanks for the video. How does this sprayer behave when you run out of paint in the container? Sprayers I have used in the past have spit globs of paint when it runs out of paint causing me to stop and refill more often to avoid that.

    • @MarkJauregui
      @MarkJauregui  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have not notice that being an issue. When it runs low the out, the fan power is the same just less paint comes out. If paint is allowed to dry at the tip during a break and is not cleaned prior to using it again then it will shoot globs.

      It depends. I would not use the sprayer for small jobs mostly because of the time it takes to clean the sprayer. Prep is about the same as with a roller.

      ericj305 anyone that’s getting the splatter and spitting of paint is not using it properly you are supposed to pull the handle back half way only for a few seconds to get the turbine going and the paint flow running in then pull all the way back and it will put out a nice even spray with no splatter or spitting. If you just pull handle all the way back in one complete motion then it will splatter and spit paint out sporadically. If anyone reads the instructions throughly or watches a few different videos this Flexio 590 works perfectly and saves a lot of time and paint.

    I purchased the 590 and I was wondering if you used the sprayer for painting furniture? I read the one review about staining cabinets but the spray was too heavy. I plan on using chalk paint (latex based) to spray on furniture. Thanks for the video - very informative.

    • @MarkJauregui
      @MarkJauregui  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Ventre I don't like it for spraying stain, it was too heavy and I still had to wipe with a rag. It should be fine with a latex paint. I have not sprayed furniture myself.

    Mark, how long to paint the first wall or entire room? surprised you didn't need to dilute the paint. Would also like to know how it goes outside with wind issues.

    • @BlossomPainting
      @BlossomPainting 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      William O'Loughlin I spray with airless sprayers outside, which are more powerful, and if there are high winds we stop. However its a "touch and go" experience. If the wind picks up we wait on the ladder and when the wind dies down we spray again. If too windy we see you tomorrow.

      This model has a well controlled spray and nearly all goes where you want it. I run it indoors at both high and low settings and don't have overspray issues.

    I'm having to return mine which is a disappointment after spending the 150. I did watch your video to make sure I was doing it right (which was really helpful), but it kept spitting. I even thinned the paint with no success. I'm going to try another brand, but worried that I'll have the same issues.

      Sarah, did you find another model that was better? I just bought the 890 and I'm using Behr Premium Plus latex + Primer. It is spitting like crazy. I've spent an hour trying to adjust it but no luck.

    some of the reviews for this gun are awful; yet you recommend it. Any idea why other people would say it spays globs of paint, leaks at the tip, and isn't even? think it's operator failure?

    • @roadhazard2002
      @roadhazard2002 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +John Wiesendanger They are probably pulling the trigger back all the way before the motor has fully started or have the paint level to high.

    • @BublisC

      The paint needs to be thinned slightly and also operator error plays a huge role in reviewing this gun.

    Bought a 590 used thick old dulux emulsion watered down not to bad mixed with yellow stirrer . Couple of problems ie splatter . Next cup full no water added stirred with paint paddle in drill again couple of misfire splatters but all dried ok .next time i will use cardboard to spray on till it gets right then hit the walls but overall its ok . If you can cut in good with a brush then dont buy these a good painter with a roller would have no need for this ( only my opinion) .

      Yes, I did a ceiling after the learning curve. It works great. Now I am buying another house and doing a complete paint job ceiling and walls different colors. This time I am going to spray Zinsser 123 white primer first over the dark colored walls.

      Buy a masking gun. You spray the walls first mask the walls with 90" 3m plastic applied with the taping gun. Pull the plastic down to cover the wall spray the ceiling in a few minutes. Awsome trick I learned from the Idaho Painter the guys a master.

    • @MarkJauregui
      @MarkJauregui  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may need to thin the paint. The higher the power setting, the finer the mist. I have used Behr latex paint with no issue. There may be a clog in the spray tip. Try taking it apart and detail cleaning it.

      I used my new 590 today spraying stain. Thinned just a tad and worked great. At first I was getting some splatter too but then I read to hold the trigger and get the motor running then pull it all the way. After that I didn't have splatter problems. Hope this helps ya

      Thanks Mark and G23, I think I mastered the Flexio. Did my ceiling no problems and even used Thompson water seal with color on a fence. Worked great. I think the first batchm of latex paint was just too thick for it as the ceiling latex which normally is a bit thicker flowed smooth and I love this thing now.
