I Saw Baby Elephants!

In 2017, I had the wonderful opportunity to check out the awesome conservation work being done at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT). Best known for its work to protect elephants, the SWT operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. Traveling with the fabulous tour company, Capture Africa Tours, we had the fortune of having a private tour of the baby elephants after the general morning feeding session. Here we got to watch the young ones frolic and play in the dirt and to just be kids! To date, 316 orphaned babies have been rescued with the goal to release later in maturity. Often, young elephants are orphaned when something happens to their mom, whether it’s a poaching incident, an injury or even abandonment when there is a lack of water. Thankfully SWT is there to bring them to their location, feed and house them, all while continually maintaining their wild spirit and eventually reintegrating them back into the surrounding wild.
