Like you Sal, I too am a street level philistine who prefers his Spider-Man's, Daredevil's, and Luke Cage's so this Avengers team is easily my favorite.
Same here. Maybe Marvel can make a New Avengers TV show now that Feige has confirmed Spidey is street level and most of the Defenders actors are coming back. They can call it Defenders if they want just give me Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones hanging out somewhere and saving New York. Maybe mix Dark Reign and Devil's Reign and have Fisk be the main Antagonist that forces them into hiding.
Sal's performance reviews of the pre-Bendis Avengers and the pre-Morrison Justice League are lovely. I'm just imagining they get their annual appraisals straight from young Sal and Vision gets a reckoning every time.
Yea but at the same time that’s just a way to tell a story. It’s been used in every medium not just comics for as long as people have been telling stories and will always be used. Funny gag tho
When getting into comics, New Avengers and Ultimate Spider-Man were my go to. This tradeback was when I realized they were all written by the same person
Bendis truly was a great writer but he's let it go to his head waaay too much. Like obviously he should be proud of everything he's done for the comics industry but he should also be able to humble himself enough not to ruin other people's stories
11:38- Agents of SHIELD is in syndication. Not only did it pass 100 episodes, it earned 2 extra seasons, and it was pretty sweet. The fan-base is small, but extremely active.
@@vicentegeonix It basically gets better every season (I'd say it's comparable to most marvel TV shows, but the first season definitely is the worst, and it does get better and more comic booky every season). I feel like Marvel fans that didn't watch it are missing out.
@@vicentegeoniximo the show sucks, like it's good if you don't know or care about the characters but it's basically shield dealing with D listers or Knock Off Ghost Rider. If you have to question if it's cannon it's usually not well done
I hope getting closer to Wakanda Forever you guys cover Namor The Depths. I think it’s a really interesting story and portrays Namor in a way never seen since Also that thing about realizing the contributions but still not caring is how I felt after watching 2001 a space odyssey.
Brian Michael Bendis always tells this really great story about how he ended up writing Avengers, saying him and Mark Millar talked about how to fix the series and 1 of them would end up writing it
Millar always tells the story of how Avengers was doing really badly before he did Ultimates. Funnily enough, Avengers was one of the top selling titles of Marvel ar the time, and the reason Ultimates was not called Ultimate Avengers was that Kurt Busiek had told Marvel he'd stop writing Avengers if they made an Ultimate Avengers series, as the Ultimate Universe's conceit was that it was 'the modern thing' compared to the out of touch 616 universe. He ended up leaving the title over Ultimates anyway, because it was obviously just ultimate avengers. (There were a few writers between this and New Avengers on the main avengers title)
I'm really happy that New Avengers is getting covered here on Back Issues. I was a kid when it was coming out and remember heading into the comic book store and seeing the cool art on these and the interesting team, i didn't know English so this also helped out a bit to learn to read the language.
The New Avengers featured some of my top favorite characters, except for Sentry. Would've been real awesome to see Daredevil and Moon Knight in the team. I'm surprised Bendis didn't invent/force many new characters during his entire Avengers run. That became far too common eventually (and unfortunately).
I remember when Thor became unworthy to lift Mjolnir, and Marvel released an image of Jane Foster as The Mighty Thor. I kind of recall them swearing up and down that it wasn't Jane Foster.
The twin brother thing actually happened first in the initial 25-issue run of Daredevil, way back in the day. People were getting suspicious of his identity, so he created the Mike identity to openly be Daredevil instead of him. It was a weird time. When Matt was armored costume Daredevil, if I remember right, he was a street hustler named Jack Batlin, which is a name he based off of his dad‘s old boxing career. Daredevil is never not weird. So maybe I’m the one getting some of my continuity mixed up! I haven’t read those issues in decades. But geez, Matt, you and your identity crisis!
Went to an mc chris show back in the day. and he was explaining the whole jessica drew scrull situation between songs in such a funny way it got me back into comics.
I was a HUGE fan of Kurt Busiek's run on Avengers, so I really hated Disassembled. It felt really disrespectful to Busiek's work after he salvaged the team from the debacle of Heroes Reborn and the decade of irrelevance that lead up to it.
I’m almost certainly an outlier, but I just could never get into Avengers when Bendis was writing them. I loved the Busiek run, but the Bendis run did nothing for me. I bailed on all of the Avengers books until Hickman took over.
Same. I was definitely not feeling Geoff John's run following Busiek's (but he did have some good moments like Falcon taking down the Red Skull). And then Avengers Disassembled hit. I felt that Bendis got everyone wrong; heck, did Cap even say anything during the Avengers piece of Disassembled!?! But my life didn't end because I stopped reading Avengers books until Hickman's run and Comic Pop provided plenty of great laughs from their Bendis lookback. And Sal has great perspective on the significance of Bendis's time with Marvel. Thanks!
This was the first comic I ever bought for myself had literally no context and no idea who most of the new ones were but it’s nice seeing the story told by yall
The fact that Bendis can pull an intresting character who gets their own tv show out of a last second plot change, makes the existence of Rogul Zar all the more disappointing.
The early 90s Avengers were like recruiters for one of those scam for-profit schools. The jackets and merch made them look like they were legit but one close look and you knew there was no substance there.
USAvengers was great, it was an Al Ewing book, the guy who wrote Immortal Hulk, and I was that street level Avengers book Sal wanted in places. The only thing is that they kept renaming the book so the first volume was like Captain America and the Mighty Avengers and just read from that going forward.
YES!!!, Its the return of the New Avengers on Back Issues. Also, I wonder if we'll get to see the Mighty Avengers on back issues that was set after Civil War Mike Murdock: "I wanna be a real boy"
I remember a silver samurai in the 2nd volume of mighty thor when all the midgard villains are sitting in a round table talking and dauterman Wilson draws the ffff out of them
I would say the peak of the Avengers was the 70s with Shooter and Englehart, but one mustn't forget Thomas's run which is also excellent. It just depends if you enjoy the older styling and dialogue. New Avengers and Busieks Avengers was my introduction to the team so I got a taste of the new and the heritage of the team. I wish Bendis was still good this run was pretty fun although it really drags after the Civil war tie in it picks back up with Siege the relaunch never hit the same heights. Having said that coming back to the run after finding some used trades it feels like Bendis brought elements of the Ultimate universe to make 616 edgier, still a fun run that could have used some more cohesion. At the end of the day it made the team and universe feel fresh and that's a big accomplishment .
I would love to see you cover new avengers I read this as a kid and I loved it it made me like avengers and earth 616 just as much as the ultimate universe
This was a great episode, but I ask out a curiosity are you guys going to ever do the two issues El Muerto appeared in since they’re making a movie about him
Explaining the experience of coming to a pop culture franchise long after it entered the cultural zeitgeist is kind of the experience that Back Issues brings to many of its fans...
I like to thank you guys for doing this episode of the New Avengers is actually a awesome series that I actually picked up and actually love because of you guys. When will do the Beta Ray Bill mini series 2021?
I feel like the next time you do New Avengers, it might do 3 volumes/stories in 1 video: magneto/xorn, Civil War tie-ins, the start of building to Secret Invasion
"The avengers are like health insurance"
Two minutes in and this already had me rolling

"The Avengers are like health insurance." Wow Venture Bros certainly went that route in the show with the Crusader Action League.
Sal's performance reviews of the pre-Bendis Avengers and the pre-Morrison Justice League are lovely. I'm just imagining they get their annual appraisals straight from young Sal and Vision gets a reckoning every time.
Ethan’s frustration with excessive “let’s go back” is pretty accurate

I like how ben came at sal for "yakuzas" vs "yakuza" but then proceeds to pronounce shuriken as "shu-ROO-ken" like 12 times.

I could see that or Doomwar getting picked
(Has both Shuri and Namor)
Id love if they did Zdarsky' "Invaders" run or Byrne's Namor run.
He could also cover Chip Zdarsky's Invaders story. I love that story about namor and his mentality.
Perfect timing just got done reading Bendis from Avengers dissemble to Siege. With New Avengers in between.

The run was cut short thanks to Civil War. Never was the same after that. Whole goal of the book was different afterwards

This was supwr fascinating! Would love a follow up episode.
Gotta love the bit at the end "you want some help? Yea? Well fuck you " haha
I never liked Bendis' decision to turn Hawkeye into Ronin but I'll always love New Avengers for giving me a team of street-level heroes.
