Mark, you do not have a clue about Ukraine, I bet before war started in 2014. you could not name more than 3 ukrainian cities and now are "expert" on Ukraine. Crimea was never ukrainian except from 1954. until 2014. Crimea was TRANSFEREED by admimistrative decision by soviet president in 1954. from Russia to Ukraine and it was taken.back by Russia in 2014. This is NOT war between Uktaine and Russia. This is war betweem Nato (Ukraine is merely Nato proxy, puppet and cannon fodder ) and Russia. And Ukraine will not and can not win this war. Even if ukrainians come at outskirts of Moscow, Russia will eventually win this war. You are very naive. God forbid that this war does not escalate from proxy to direct conflict between Nato and China&Russia. Yes, it is a matter of time when China will go to take back Taiwan.
Thats assuming that russian nukes are at parity with the US , which they are not. The US and NATO are in fact capable of taking down Russia without being devastated by nuclear weapons. Aegis, thaad and patriot systems are capable of eliminating Russian ICBM threats.
No one wants a nuclear war and it should be avoided. But it would be dangerous to let Putin get away with nuclear blackmail, and even worse if he carried out his threat. If we were to let that happen then we would see nuclear propitiation and that would be cataphoric for the entire planet in and of itself.
It should surprise no one that Elena Sokova is a graduate of a Soviet university. She was also a member of the Soviet Foreign ministry from 1981-1992. There's no wonder she doesn't want anyone calling Putin's bluff.
Interesting is the fact that she was invited to talk at DW. We thought the RT is forbidden in EU. Germany, Austria, Hungary still hopping for good deals with Russia the new old deal Molotov -Ribbentrop has to be reenacted. They want to share Eastern Europe to Russia so they can profit and finish with them in a new deal.
It is a bluff cause we have the ability to turn Moscow and St. Petersburg into a glowing green crater as well. Nobody wants to go down that path but if he were to hypothetically nuke Warsaw Berlin or New York what other choice would we have but to retaliate in kind? Putin want's all his first world comforts and not to have to live in a bunker several km below the Ural mountains. Also I doubt he has the authority to single handily give the order. He'd have to pass the order down the chain of command and likely nobody on his inner staff would be down to kick off world war 3. Likely him giving the order would be the catalyst to start off a coup d'etat. Cause even if he is cool with living in a bunker for the rest of his life odds are his staff are not or they know there is not enough room for all of them inside said bunker. He's gone off the rails, burnt all his bridges and there is no universe where this ends well for him.
The fact that if you corner a man with a gun, he will use it isn’t a bluff though. The reality is that if Russia actually ends up in a position where it is losing, it will very likely use nuclear weapons. That is the natural and logical outcome. If anything, Putin not using nuclear weapons would be the most unlikely scenario.
The rambling and mostly confusing responses from Elena Sokova to just about every question given her about Russia and Nuclear weapons were some of worst I have ever heard . She is supposed to be well educated and well informed, I like others below, do not think she even listened to David Petraeus. She added No value to this News Segment and there was no condemnation from her at all about what Russia has done to Ukraine.
She misunderstood what Petraeus said. He said that if Russia used nukes, that might result in NATO using conventional weapons directly in Ukraine. Not that NATO would get directly involved, which would lead to a potential nuclear response from the Kremlin…
I think she completely understood that. I think she's just voicing the fears of the European left of nuclear escalation and how unacceptable that would be.
Lmfao any conventional attack by NATO would be a decleration of war and it will be nuclear. But dont worry, even if Russia nukes Ukraine, NATO wont risk their existance for Zelensky.
Oh? When you brought on the Executive director of the Center for Disarmament, was that clip of Former Gen. Petraeus the exact one played for her? Or was the director aware of the larger context of the clip? It appears to me that she is believes the general is making that statement as an overall possibility and remarking that such action would lead to a nuclear response. However, the context of the clip is that the general is stating a potential US response IF Russia has already performed a nuclear attack. If that context was intentionally removed, that is very manipulative framing.
Good question. I didnt know the larger context of that clip but i understood that he was talking about a respone to a nuclear attack, she obviously didnt. I dont think it was intentionally though, they just cut that clip too short to make that clear.
You have a good point. I always prefer to give people as much benefit of doubt and as much slack as I can only stretch. But the startling thing is, she, as part of her job, should have been following this crisis very closely. If she's unaware of the US position-and both Biden and Petraeus have been repeating exactly the same thing, if only in different words, not once, but many, many times, and for quite a while, contrary to what she says-then the VCDNP has been living somewhere outside reality lately, they had plenty of time to catch up... And she's the _head_ of this NGO. The neural center of all its internal comms and situational awareness. All this simply doesn't add up.
I’m with her really. We are not starting a nuclear war over Ukraine, case closed. At the end of the day it’s not worth ending the world over. Plenty of nations are protected by the US nuclear umbrella, or by the Uk and France, it’s Ukraines problem not being a part of those treaties. Funnily enough none of this would have ever happened if the 2014 revolution didn’t happen. Ukraine dug this hole itself.
It may seem insane. But when you are all out of cards; your military is crippled, your economy is crippled, and you have gone from world power to third rate; when all you've got left is being a nuclear power, that red button grts awfully shinny.
Elena Sokova is a Russian sympathizer and does not want Russsia defeated on its adventurism. This is the reason she does not want to see a stronger western support of Ukraine. Likewise she has nothing to say of Ramzan Kadyrov telling Putin to use low-yield nuclear weapons.
Couldn't agree more. These pro RuZZian aggression bozos really disgust me. They never learned the Golden Rule and think they can grab all the cookies, kick the teacher, and schred the kid beside them's teddy bear, AND still be allowed to stay indoors with the non-crazy kids. It's time for the bear to be sedated... .
Rough estimates 50000-100000, depending how you count the kinds of losses (KIA, MIA, captives etc.). More than their new draft will produce to begin with.
Ukraine estimates 60 000 dead Russians. So that's probably on the high end. 4-50 000 or so. And then 3 times that wounded (120-150 000). Russia desperately need more men with guns so no wonder they needed to do a "partial" draft.
A deterrent only works if you're willing to use it, if Russia used a nuke and the US didn't respond in kind, it will be a green light for anyone and everyone who has nukes to also use them. The US has to respond, there is no other option.
If the Russians used it on the US, the US would fire back. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). That is what prevented the US and USSR from going to war. If the Russians use it on Ukraine, that is different. In that case, Russia did not use them on the US. Will Washington support Americans getting nuked in response?
@@jz12390 The US has to respond, unless it wants to see Seoul or Taipei go up in a mushroom cloud. Because China and North Korea WILL take the US's nonresponce as a green light to uses nukes as well. Not to mention Putin will also take that as a green light to just keep nuking till Ukraine surrenders.
If Russia uses nuke they finished as a super power. If the almighty Russian Army cannot defeat small Ukraine army without nuclear weapons, Putin is done.
This second lady gave the response Putin wants, be afraid of me and do nothing🙄 The use of any nuclear capability should be a red line and should have a strong response. Putin is doing this because nobody did anything when he took Crimea, he will continue doing the same as long as they let him.
Any direct intervention by NATO will lead to a full scale nuclear war. Girl in the video is being sensible, most humans have lives full of loved ones, loved places and loved things. We are not starting an civilisation ending conflict over Ukraine. Case closed. Also a lot of this is Ukraines fault. If it had recognised the independence of Luhansk and Donetsk and the annexation of Crimea it could have joined NATO in 2014. Instead it continued to fight a useless diplomatic battle with Russia when they could’ve just sucked up their pride and acknowledged what they lost so they would not lose anymore. Ukraine is only standing still because of the Wests aid and Russian refusal to mobilise, and their refusal to negotiate with Russia is just escalating the war.
Excellent guests with excellent, thoughtful questions. There seemed to be a bit of confusion regarding Petraeus' comments (which I personally wouldn't classify as "rhetoric") by the second guest however. The scenario, which he's described a few times now, is a potential RESPONSE to Russia's use of nuclear weapons. Logically circling back and suggesting that might cause Russia to escalate to a nuclear response (13:58) seems to miss the cause and effect component of Petraeus' hypothetical.
Back in the day, one of my IntelOs described massed formations as a 'target rich environment'. Numbers mean little when morale is zero. They just become meat to shoot at.
good point. I never considered this before. Large masses of meat are quickly demoralized by casualties and attrition. Far better to have smaller groupings of meat, highly trained, with crack equipment. That way you don't expose your guys to being psychologically gutted by having to witness excessive casualties.

Telling Russia we will not respond militarily if they use nukes is not a successful strategy. If we are making it clear that the only response to nukes will be increased sanctions, that does not reassure me at all. What does that policy tell China as they eye Taiwan? What does it tell North Korea as they look south? India and Pakistan? Iran vs Israel? How about any country that doesn't have nukes- yet? If our response to nuclear threats is to stand down and stand aside, the only result will be more nuclear armed countries, and more aggression from those countries. Under that policy, within 30 years every single country with resources worth stealing will be nuclear armed, or will be occupied by someone who is.

The "nuclear train" story is completely blown out of proportions. First of all, those missiles are designed to hit the USA and Europe. They don't need to be moved to hit Ukraine, on the opposite, they probably need a minimum distance to their target measured in many hundreds of miles. Second, this is what the Sovjet nuclear tactic has been since it started making ICBMs. Put them on mobile launch platforms and keep moving them around, so the enemy doesn't know where they all are. There's been hundreds of those transports in the last 50 years. Third, these are just the mobile launch platforms with the missiles. You don't transport such a huge number of warheads together and you don't transport them on top of a rocket (with it's solid rocket fuel), not even if you are Russian. It's a rocket train, not a nuclear train :).
It will be a long-lasting mess, but not the end of the world. We don't get an escape from our problems through a convenient Armageddon. We'll have to figure it out. So don't bother being scared - start figuring.
Russia has said that if they are losing they will use nuclear weapons. They never said that they would use them on Ukraine. Russia has over 6 000 nukes. If they use only 200 on Germany they will still have 6,000 left. What would Germany look like?
Well they have to accurately hit their target first. And this ukraine war is just showing the inaccuracy of their missiles and artillery. Plus if the only sent 1 nuke to Germany, Russia will burn.
It's probably not gonna happen. BTW, 0:27 _kilometres_ rhymes with "nanometres", not with "thermometers" (because it's a unit of measurement, not a measuring device). You're a reporter; you should know better.

I cannot take the second guest seriously.
Uh, nuclear war would be catastrophic for the entire planet.
Nobody survives a nucular war
No worse than letting dictators invade at will with nuclear threats. You will end up in the same situation eventually.
@@codybell6882 *SSSSHHHHHH!* That's supposed to be secret!!
It should surprise no one that Elena Sokova is a graduate of a Soviet university. She was also a member of the Soviet Foreign ministry from 1981-1992. There's no wonder she doesn't want anyone calling Putin's bluff.
She does sounded like Putin's MOUTH piece!!!!
Thanks, I was wondering…
The fact that if you corner a man with a gun, he will use it isn’t a bluff though. The reality is that if Russia actually ends up in a position where it is losing, it will very likely use nuclear weapons. That is the natural and logical outcome. If anything, Putin not using nuclear weapons would be the most unlikely scenario.
The rambling and mostly confusing responses from Elena Sokova to just about every question given her about Russia and Nuclear weapons were some of worst I have ever heard . She is supposed to be well educated and well informed, I like others below, do not think she even listened to David Petraeus. She misunderstood what Petraeus said. He said that if Russia used nukes, that might result in NATO using conventional weapons directly in Ukraine. Not that NATO would get directly involved, which would lead to a potential nuclear response from the Kremlin…
Now you got me confused, whether there will be direct military confrontation by nato or not?
I think she completely understood that. I think she's just voicing the fears of the European left of nuclear escalation and how unacceptable that would be.
if NATO uses conventional weapons in Ukraine against Russia it means WW3, no Western leader wants (nuclear) war with Russia...
Yup, the question was misleading or edited to make it sensational.
Exactly what I was thinking.

I hope Putin launch all the nukes and none survives!!!!!
Patton was right we should have kept going and took Russia then.
It would have been better for all normal Russians.

What does it tell North Korea as they look south? India and Pakistan? Iran vs Israel? How about any country that doesn't have nukes- yet? Exactly.
Its far more dangerous for the US to get directly involved..
