Hi Charlie, This is another very informative and constructed tutorial. This video is 4 years old, but it is still up-to-date. You do a great job promoting this fabulous hobby
Something of a Johnny Come-Lately here I know but this series on the viaduct board has been wonderful, relaxing viewing which also mages to inform and inspire. As a 70 year old who is planning his first layout since childhood days, an Inglenook shunting of some sort to enjoy with my grandchildren as well as just play trains, your videos, along with the many other excellent model railway TH-camrs, are a superb source of ideas and techniques. I have no doubt that I will make a wealth of mistakes when I start my layout but never mind as it will be fun and will certainly get the creative juices flowing. Thanks for this and all your videos,

I got an empty loft planned for next year as had to pay for my daughter's wedding this year, but I've been watching your videos intently and learning new stuff along the way, bit nervously looking forward to it but thankyou for your great video's.
Brilliant video. Very inspiring for a returning modeller after 50 yrs away. I appreciate the sharing of your experience warts and all, and yes I am a subscriber. :-) 👍
Hello, wow, what a delight that was. That was a marvelous video to end that particular series with. I'm kinda sad that it has to end. I very much look forward to whatever you have up your sleeve for the next series. Take care of yourself. Bye for now.
Charlie, greetings from upstate NY. That was an awesome presentation. It cleared up a lot of questions that I've had about modelling this kind of expansive rural terrain. Thanks. I think your trees are among the best I've seen, they are ultra realistic. Great presentation style as well. Luke Towan is a source of inspiration for me as well. Vines crawling up the viaduct pillars would be a nice touch I think. Our fields have more trees between them than bushes, tree rows more than hedge rows. The older fields are often demarcated by hand laid stone fences, particularly in neighbouring New England. I don't have a layout started yet, just a small test track. Getting back into the hobby after more years away than I care to remember, I'm concentrating on updating and repairing old rolling stock and power which are all DC at the moment. A friend from down south is supplying me with virtually free freight and passenger cars as well as a plethora of ancient Athearn EMD F-7s. The shells will fit newer chassis so work on them won't go to waste. I have a lot of videos shot that are awaiting edit and upload. Unfortunately, it takes more time to set up the shots and edit it all into coherent videos than it takes to do the actual modifications. I have managed to get a few videos up on the Tube though. BTW: Around 1975, I spent a week in London and visited Madenhead (Cosworth), Brands Hatch and Goodwood. I met many wonderful people and got to hang out with the great Derek Bell at Goodwood circuit. I fell in love with England. My grandmother was a Drake and a descendant of Sir. Francis so there's some family history there! Alas, I have never gotten a chance to go back. Thanks and regards, - Dave
@Iain Botham I'm planning on doing a tiny mine on the edge/side of my T Gauge layout, but I don't know if it would be too small to see (1:450 scale - 3x smaller than N Scale - 1:150 scale)!
Good teachers don't cover their mistakes... They're honest and use them to inform their students of any possible pitfalls... Seeing is believing... Thanks to that honesty, I learned, apart from how to make a cracking tree, that even those with the best of skill are going to get covered in stuff so 'wear old clothes'. If Charlie gets that much on him with his skills, I'd need to be wearing a boilersuit and facemask if I attempted it. Even then I'd probably still glue some part of myself to something. It's good that he's transparent with these things. :)
Very nice Charlie,The viaduct looks like it was built into the valley by the railway. The trees are really ace,. even more so while the rest of us are watching T.V. in the evenings your building trees. If you hadn't said I would have thought you'd dropped your cream doughnut down your front. Take care, Cheers, Chris Perry.
Bravo. Gorgeous. Looks just like the British videos I so enjoy on TH-cam. I, too, have a T-shirt and it's just what it looks like: blue paint in the shape of a paint roller. Nicely enjoyed from the beginning. Thanks.
Hello Charlie i like you a lot because you are a very talented man,but you dont come over all big headed.Watching you work and hearing you speak is a joy,and your vids are some of the best ive watched on here. What you have made looks great and i love it :)
Hallo Charly! Wonderful landscape! It's a great pleasure to whatch your videos! It's so astonishing! It remembers me of old an railway at the borderline Germany/Belgium near Aachen from Eupen to Luxembourg through the wilderness of the Eifel! Friendly greetings from Cologne!
Thank you for sharing your skills. For those like me who are just starting out, they are so helpful. I particularly like the rocks on either side of the river.
Hi Charlie, yes indeed have watched your Wiring the DCC bus, many thanks for prompt reply, it’s understanding of say laying points end to end using frog insulators, ie say even fiddle yard. Kind regards Eddie. Excellent channel! 🤓
Just got through watching your Viaduct Landscaping video. When the water was done before you put in the ripples I thought it was brilliant looking. Then you scared me by putting all that white stuff on top of a beautiful mirrored finish. But the next day when it all dried out it really did look good. I like your style and sense of humor. Open without cable TV so most of my down time is spent on TH-cam looking at train platforms. Now that's old school. Model railroading I guess this is what it should be called.
Nice video Charlie. I've made river and pond effects with resin by doing it in layers. The first layer uses more dye of dark blue-green. Then another layer with less dye . Then a third layer of with less dye of light green. This give a look of depth to the water.
Charlie, this is without any doubt one of the best rail channels that I have viewed. I have a 70ft layout up in my loft ( was a bedroom ) however I have vastly in proved it simply because of your excellent vids and expertise.many thanks for your time , effort & terrific knowledge.
Really nice, and coming together nicely. On the frugal front, I'll share something from an Australian chap named Peter--he makes rocks, particularly those around water, by crumbling 6-8mm coark sheets. The effect is stunning, as the cork breaks up into rocky bits, and accepts paint reasonably well ithout being over-uniform.
Charlie, absolutely fantastic the way that the Viaduct turned out, it's Your work, along with a few others, that keep me working on my own Layout. Looking for Your next installment, Ray USA.
Hello from America! I have watched several of your videos so far and have learned something useful to this HO scale modeler in each video. The fact you use products made by American companies (Woodland Scenics, 3M, Envirotex, Mod-Podge) will make sourcing the products much easier. As per usual I learned from this video. This time I was intrigued by your tree assembly and painting methods. Simple using readily available items and a few steps to a fantastic tree. Here in the states we have black poly-fiber (same as the white used in pillows) and I will try using it instead of the sea foam on the tree branches. I'm hoping it will eliminate a painting step. Again, thanks for teaching this old modeler a few new tricks.
Charlie , what a beautiful job you did on your diorama 😄. I am very happy that you kept the smaller bridge as well .... they go great 👍 together!!! And that big beautiful tree 🌳 in the front... that really makes your scene come to live. Please remember to add people too !!! Again what I pleasure watching your video!!! Great job Charlie !! 😄. Kraig
Fantastic video and very comprehensive tutorial. Very brave with the water! Like you I find that after spending a fortune on every tool under the sun, the best results come from a wet finger!!!! Likewise, I spray all my bushes (lichen works great with the scatter and leaves) and trees black first. It produces so much better depth and contrast. Like you I observe that as you look at trees the underlying colour is black and I am still searching for a tree with a brown trunk! I am really liking where this diorama is going. Keep up the good work, it is paying off in spade fulls. Big thumbs up!
Looks really good Charlie job well done have enjoyed watching this project thank you so much...I never liked doing scenery upto about 2 years ago now it's my favourite part of the hobby right next to scratch building locomotives
Well that's come on a treat. Certainly does look good and will hopefully look back at this when I take the plunge into the river Exe (in model form lol) later this year.. so that's now 2 reasons why I own an airbrush 😆
Hi Charlie. What an amazing job you have done on the viaduct & landscape. You saved the best till last I have followed you on this path, every video as been very informative I will watch this video again I am in awe of what you have achieved it is totally amazing. Regards George.....
Wonderful piece of modelling, every process well documented.....I used woodland scenics realistic water on my canal, as the mixing process I didn't have the worry.....
Thank you for sharing your process, your discoveries and your uncertianities... that gives me more confidence to try it myself... Of course I like the bridge and the whole diorama! BTW: Thank you for deleting inappropriately worded comments - there is no need to use those words even if you disagree with something or someone. Additionally, that means I can safely to recommend this video to my friends and acquaintences etc.. Nice work sir...
The perfect video the viaduct build. I'm going to do one with a curve in it into my helix up five laps to the main level it's going to look real cool I love your viaduct I learned a lot glad I found your channel sir
I see the grey bridge over the river as being red or dirty yellow brick colour. As it is, I fancy it looks somewhat unfinished. You do brilliant work and induce a confidence, in me anyway. I 'DO' click the 👍🏻 up button. DAVE C🦉
Always enjoy your videos Charlie and this was one of the best. I learned a lot and it will definitely help with my layout. Thank you for all you video's, unlike some, you are not scared to show your work warts and all!!! Long may you continue. Thanks again.

Hi Charlie, awesome...nothing more, nothing less...Awesome. I have to say I do think you’re channel is my favourite one. Have followed this from the start and your skills in modelling are just very very good and great descriptions to boot. I know what you mean about subscribers as only 10% of watchers have subbed. I don’t feel quite so rejected by the viewers if you have the same trouble!! Cheers for now, Chris
Tell you what Charlie, you've done a super job! You do seem to always have the right tool for the job. I'd never have thought a Aldi blowlamp could be used that way!! Well done mate, regards Terry.
I think the river looked better with a mirror finish personally. Where I live we have a river that is miles long but has a surface like a mill pond. The reflection of the viaduct in the water lookeed stunning. Your landscape looks very good indeed.
A fabulous construction and has inspired me to start modelling again, now nearing retirement and having time. You have a really nice presentation style (though I suspect that is you are rather than a style). I really enjoy the way you present the steps in a very affable manner, all the skills, hints and that you include the minor errors! Thank you for the very informative entertainment!
Thanks for the informative videos, Charlie. Just in the early stages of a model railway (N gauge, to test my eyesight...) ,and your tips are really pointing me in the right direction. You and the guru Luke Towan (we can only hope, hey?) are my go-to's now. As for the polo shirts.... not only are you wrecking them, but they are Lacoste and Ralph Lauren ones, too! Keep up the good work.
Wonderful video. The first time I have seen your videos was this evening and I am most impressed. I will undoubtedly be watching a lot of them in the next few weeks!
Stunning job Charlie, pleasure to watch, that's what I like about your video's, you get it wart's 'n' all! You could do with some heavy weathering on that little bridge though, like you did on the rocks. Looking forward to your next video. Cheers...Les.
Charlie, a fabulous video. The Ernesto (Lidl) cookery blow lamp is a boon - I use it for soldering heavier brass parts together, when the soldering iron just won’t heat the parts efficiently or as quickly as needed. Useful in many areas for sure. The end result for you is outstanding and very impressive. All the best, as ever. Bob
More great work ,Charlie.Hot air gun also works on water effects,or just blow on it with a straw. Regarding forced perspective for HO I use 1:100 then 1:120 (TT) and where I have enough depth 1:160. Also, watching this I realised some of my plans are filled too much with track and structures, most scenery in backdrops. One must leave enough space for 3D scenery, especially in the foreground.
As a new Subscriber and watcher of your channel, it is refreshing to find such a wealth of knowledge being passed on. I live in the South Australian outback town of Peterborough SA, and it is a town with a rich heritage in steam. We even have an attraction in town called "Steamtown". I am building my first scratch build lay-out and find these videos very helpful. I enjoy your presentation style and adore your lay-out.
Just watched the video again Charlie, i still think it is brilliant. Since my last comment i have moved house and bought an n gauge train set and made up a 4' x 2'6 board for it. i have also purchased the ratio viaduct. All i have to do now is work out how to turn it into a scene similar to yours. Many thanks
Great one Charlie have been subscribed for awhile but first comment. Glad to find someone with as heavy a hand as myself when applying glue. Looking life like and your basic guiding of what you are doing is much appreciated. Cheers Robert, Adelaide, Aus.
Very good charlie I love your vids so imformative and you tell it like it is with the little mistakes you make on the way and tell us what you should have done ,which is good for us fellow modellers not to make the same little mistakes , now the bridge I love the bridge but don't love the bridge if you get my drift ,to me the bridge sits up to much if it was set lower I think it would look much better but that would now be very tricky after the work you have done ,the only other option is a different type of bridge ,I like the gentle background music very soothing , thanks again Ray.
Stumbled across your channel over the christmas hols.....it's bl**dy brilliant! Just the thing to help me with 2020's project / resolution to start on layout around the circumference of the playroom for my sons (+ me!)
That is fantastic. The way the ripples worked on the river was like magic it looks spot on. Both the trees are excellent and you are right the tractor really adds scale to the whole scene.
Hi Charlie - another cracking video. Hillside and viaduct look really convincing. Once you see some trains running across it you'll really see all your time and effort was well worth the wait. Cheers Euan
I absolutely enjoy the "mistakes" that you leave in the videos. We are all human in the area of making mistakes and, admitting your short comings and leaving them in for all of us to see, just proves that you and I/we are basically the same in that regard. It's that humor that really keeps things fresh and interesting. Thanks for being you and keep the videos coming.

I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Jon. Regards Charlie
What can one say, except for true craftsmanship. Well done Charlie, you have done it again.
Thanks Robin, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
Wonderful piece of modelling, every process well documented.....I used woodland scenics realistic water on my canal, as the mixing process I didn't have the worry.....
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Richard
Love the blowtorch technique. I hadn’t heard that one before.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Keith
Brilliant videos. Helpful tips that give me confidence to try my first piece of landscaping on my first layout.
Go for it Stuart the world is your oyster.
Thanks Jim, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it and feel the same way regarding swearing on TH-cam.
The perfect video the viaduct build. I'm going to do one with a curve in it into my helix up five laps to the main level it's going to look real cool I love your viaduct I learned a lot glad I found your channel sir
I’m so pleased that you find the channel useful Vic. Regards Charlie
I see the grey bridge over the river as being red or dirty yellow brick colour. As it is, I fancy it looks somewhat unfinished. You do brilliant work and induce a confidence, in me anyway. I 'DO' click the 👍🏻 up button. DAVE C🦉
Hi Dave, I see the viaduct as a granite construction. Regards Charlie
Charlie, I am still at the bare baseboard stage, what you are doing is great - giving me great inspiration and ideas, thanks!
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it David.
Great stuff Charlie the trees are amazing.
Thanks Stephen .
Always enjoy your videos Charlie and this was one of the best. I learned a lot and it will definitely help with my layout. Thank you for all you video's, unlike some, you are not scared to show your work warts and all!!! Long may you continue. Thanks again.
Thanks Clive, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
Very tasteful background music and you have it at the perfect volume level. Your modeling work is wondrous. So many could LEARN from you.
Thanks Jason, it’s comments such as yours that make it worthwhile
Catching up on your video's whilst working from home !!. Great work. Love your videos. Great work and great explanations....thanks :)
What a heart warming comment Robin. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway I'm returning to model railways after a 30 year hiatus...so these videos are perfect for me to get my juices flowing :) thanks again.
Thanks Chris, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
Tell you what Charlie, you've done a super job! You do seem to always have the right tool for the job. I'd never have thought a Aldi blowlamp could be used that way!! Well done mate, regards Terry.
You’re too kind Terry.
Nice one Charlie, a pleasure to watch as always
Thanks Chris, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
I think the river looked better with a mirror finish personally. Where I live we have a river that is miles long but has a surface like a mill pond. The reflection of the viaduct in the water lookeed stunning. Your landscape looks very good indeed.
Thanks mate, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
Thanks BH, it’s great to have you onboard. Regards Charlie
Sadly Roger, rest assured that those polo shits had seen better days.
Good luck with your project, regards Charlie
Looks Fantastic Charlie, Great Job
Thanks James
Wonderful video. The first time I have seen your videos was this evening and I am most impressed. I will undoubtedly be watching a lot of them in the next few weeks!
It’s great to have you on-board Mr grey
Massive project. Looks great. Something to be proud of
Thanks Mark, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
Another great video Charlie can't wait for the next one
Thanks Dave, I’m so glad pleased that you enjoyed it.
Stunning job Charlie, pleasure to watch, that's what I like about your video's, you get it wart's 'n' all! You could do with some heavy weathering on that little bridge though, like you did on the rocks. Looking forward to your next video. Cheers...Les.
Thanks Les, bridge weathering is on the long list!
Bob
Thanks Bob, I’m so very pleased that you enjoyed it, blow lamp buddy!
Thanks Simon, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Yes creating depth is always a challenge.
Beautifully done !
Thanks mate, regards Charlie
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos in these very dark times. Such a blessed relief, thank you old chap!
Thanks Shaun, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed them.
Thanks Drew, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video
Looking great Charlie!
Thanks Paul, I’m so very pleased that you enjoyed it
That really is fantastic, Charlie.
Thanks John, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie.
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO CHARLIE , THAT AS BEEN A BRILLIANT PROJECT. THAT AS GIVEN ME CONFIDENCE TO HAVE A GO MYSELF .
Good for you Dave and good luck.
Cracking demonstration! Thank you!
Thanks FHR, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
Yet another awesome video Charlie. I am sure this will give others the confidence to try your method(s) of scenery production. Many thanks
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Murray
Just watched the video again Charlie, i still think it is brilliant. Since my last comment i have moved house and bought an n gauge train set and made up a 4' x 2'6 board for it. i have also purchased the ratio viaduct. All i have to do now is work out how to turn it into a scene similar to yours. Many thanks
Welcome back to the hobby Sean. I wish you luck with the viaduct, I’m sure your master it and make it excellent job. Regards Charlie
Great one Charlie have been subscribed for awhile but first comment. Glad to find someone with as heavy a hand as myself when applying glue. Looking life like and your basic guiding of what you are doing is much appreciated. Cheers Robert, Adelaide, Aus.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Robert
Very good charlie I love your vids so imformative and you tell it like it is with the little mistakes you make on the way and tell us what you should have done ,which is good for us fellow modellers not to make the same little mistakes , now the bridge I love the bridge but don't love the bridge if you get my drift ,to me the bridge sits up to much if it was set lower I think it would look much better but that would now be very tricky after the work you have done ,the only other option is a different type of bridge ,I like the gentle background music very soothing , thanks again Ray.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Ray
Stumbled across your channel over the christmas hols.....it's bl**dy brilliant! Just the thing to help me with 2020's project / resolution to start on layout around the circumference of the playroom for my sons (+ me!)
Thanks Mark, it’s great to have you onboard.
That is fantastic. The way the ripples worked on the river was like magic it looks spot on. Both the trees are excellent and you are right the tractor really adds scale to the whole scene.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it David.
Hi Charlie - another cracking video. Hillside and viaduct look really convincing. Once you see some trains running across it you'll really see all your time and effort was well worth the wait. Cheers Euan
Thanks Eian, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
Nice work!
Glad to see someone else realise that trees are not brown...
Too true Steve
That looks really good! Luke is a sensational modeller!
Yes a scenics god, with a small g.
Regards Charlie
I absolutely enjoy the "mistakes" that you leave in the videos. We are all human in the area of making mistakes and, admitting your short comings and leaving them in for all of us to see, just proves that you and I/we are basically the same in that regard. It's that humor that really keeps things fresh and interesting. Thanks for being you and keep the videos coming.
What a heartwarming comment Dale. Regards Charlie
Awesome as always Charlie!!! Specially the river!! Cheers Onno.
Many thanks Onno
Great work and great presentation style 👍.
Thanks Leigh
Very nice Sir Thank You for sharing your talents
You’re too kind Dennis.
