I hadn't yet watched this video when my 30 year old Casablanca fan quit suddenly one day. I determined it was the fan not getting the signal from the wall switch. Both Casablanca and the company they recommended tried selling me a new switch and circuit board for $225. After watching this video you gave me the courage to tackle this problem. It was exactly how you described! A burned out resistor! After wicking away the old solder and removing the burnt resistor and resoldering in the new one (sold on eBay in packs of 5 for $3), I am now enjoying our fan once again with no problems. I have to wonder how many people have thrown out their expensive fans because of this? Thank you for taking the time to create this video and help save me money!
I got a Casablanca Panama 5 and the motor wouldn’t start, and when I pushed it while it was on, it would barely spin in whichever direction I pushed it to. The issue was the 10uf capacitor. I cut the old capacitor out and connected a new one across the red and the brown wires connecting to the board. Works fine now. BTW, this problem can happen on any fans with permanent split capacitor motor. Most ceiling fans have permanent split capacitor motor. To see if it’s a bad capacitor, turn on power then press fan button. If the motor vibrates but wouldn’t start, and the flywheel/blades spin freely if you push it with your hand, then it would be a capacitor issue.
My resistor in that position is brown-black-brown-gold, which is 100 ohms 5%, when I measured it my meter read 1.2 Mega ohms. Thanks so much for the video. Not only is it way cheaper - but also allowed me to perform a same day repair.
My 20 year old Casablanca Stealth died recently. I pulled my board out, my small board had a 10k 1% on it that tested out fine. My larger board had a 3.3 Ohm 1% resistor that tested at 0.4 ohms. I did not have a 3.3 Ohm resistor on hand so I replaced it with a stack of 3 10 Ohm 1% 1 watt resistors to reach the correct value. Unit now powers on and runs. Thanks for the inspiration!
8/4/2012 Thanks very much to the poster of this video. Excellent instructions, and it saved me a lot of cash, as the repair worked perfectly. Thank you for your time and effort in posting this online!
My Casablanca Delta 2 fan stopped running. In troubleshooting, I found the forward-reverse switch faulty. There was no easy way to remove/replace the switch so I cut loose the two wires for blowing the air downwards and twisted them together. While testing the fan, I noticed a spark on the circuit board when I turned on the fan. There was a bad solder connection on the bottom of the board that I had to re-solder. The fan now runs and the wife is happy!
Kudos to fishbulb for this post! Luckily I had the same fan with the same problem. Only difference is when I measured the 10K resistor, it was fine. Turns out that there was some cracked solder on the leads of a couple of resistors, Resoldered them and I'm back in business!!! Shame on Casablanca who make an awesome fan. 18 years and still looks good and quiet as a mouse. However, to charge $100 plus for a new set of electronics and switch is robbery to me. Thanks for sharing this!
I'm about to embark on this same repair and the only oddity is my existing resistor is (light) brown/black/(dark) brown/gold which would be a 100-Ohm instead of 1000-Ohm rating. The current resistor is blown, so I obviously can't measure it to ensure the 3rd ring isn't red versus brown, but I'm fairly convinced it's brown even though both brown strips are different shades, which is confusing in itself. I'll remove it and triple-check after wiping it down. Thanks for this video!
I have a Casablanca Stealth that is probably around the same age. It has a wall control panel (vs a remote) that is connected to my light switch. I too have faced ongoing objections from the only service centre in the city, saying it's too old and that parts are no longer available, but like you, I'm determined to fix mine. Before I go through your tutorial, I just wanted to describe my situation in case you might suggest another approach. I am definitely getting power to the fan - the light works, the fan works... same with control panel.... I think the problem is within the wall panel. The light hadn't worked in a year, but the fan was fine. I've never had a problem with the fan until recently. Now it seems that the circuit is scrambled... I turned off the fan and couldn't get it going for a couple of days. I tried again, and it worked but only on the lowest speed. I turned it off again to see if it would work and it took about 50 tries to get it working again... A few times I left the power on, but had no fan activity, then hours the fan would start working. My latest status is, the fan turned on from the "Reverse" switch, NOT the Fan switch and it's now turning at medium speed, but no light still. Sorry for the long message but I'm not an expert and I love this fan. Hope to hear back. Thank you.
I have an older fan than this one, pre 1987 Inteli-touch, using the W-11 wall control. There is just one control board, not two, but it looks fundamentally the same as this unit and uses an Emerson K55AMBHT-9210 motor. It has had some intermittent behavior for quite some time and just lately started failing altogether. After seeing your video I inspected my board and saw that R1, a large 1W resistor like what you show, has generated a lot of heat, discolored the surrounding circuit board, and is cracked. It still measures 3300 ohms as the orange-orange-red-gold rings indicates but as it is cracked I'd imagine this would explain the intermittent behavior. I intend to replace it and hope to get the same good result. Thanks.
Casablanca Inteli-touch fans are not junk, they are far better than any box store fan. I understand your frustration though, Inteli touch2 circuit boards are a nightmare. I would by an Emerson with a K55xl motor.
For the RMM4, the resistor is 10K not 1K, and the problem for the ones I worked on was the 1000 uF 25 volt electrolytic capacitor. This module design is a thermal disaster, and the electrolytic capacitors get baked out by the heat. The 1000 uF cap and two 10 uF 16 volt electrolytics bear scrutiny and repair, using the same procedure you note for the resistor, but keeping in mind that these caps are polarized (they have a + and - side, noted on the PC board). Then there are the 425 and 3.9K power resistors that are often baked out, although these are pretty hardy, usually.
I believe this resistor is a 10,000 ohm, not a 1,000 ohm part... Beware that the heat also bakes the color bands, so they may not be reliable for troubleshooting the value it should be.
I have a RIMM board and the two long resistors on the side are solid green, no number on them. How do you know what type to replace, I'm assuming 10,000 ohm.
My fan sparked last night and now the lights work but the fan itself doesn't. It's a newer 2011 model and I can't see any problems with the resistor - any other thoughts? The place I bought it from wants to repair it for $225!!! The repair fellow also suggested it might be the Molex plug - how does one test for a faulty plug?
When I turn the casablanca ceiling fan on, it is making a noise. It seems from inspection that there is a gasket just above the casing that rotates the blades. Where can I find the name of this gasket, part number. Thank you
I don't believe the 1000 ohm value is correct for the newer RMM4 boards, more like 10K or possibly higher. As far as I can tell the older RMM boards, at least through RMM4 are no longer available, however another solution is to upgrade the board and wall switch to the IT3 standard. I bought two kits from "Fan Man" for $150 ea, I hope to install them this weekend, I'll report how it goes. I'm tired of getting the ladder out and messing with these boards, hopefully this will be a long term solution. Of course if the $1 resistor works for you, and you don't mind doing it now and then, it's about as cheap as it gets. It didn't work for me.
Weird, changed the resistor and run normal, but when I turn off and turn on again, there's short somewhere and blow out my switch. OK, I took of the board and hard wired the wires, replace a normal 3 speed controller and now it's a non-intel fan in the bath room. more reliable!
Our fan light won't turn off when the fan is running. I can turn the power off and on to turn off the light but I cannot run the fan with the lights off. Any suggestions as to what to do or what can be done to repair this.
i have similar casablanca fan that is not fuctioning to theinteli-touch remote . It has curcuit board no 9901190 with 4 resistors standing upright. Do you do the same test ?.

Spot on with the diagnosis and repair.
I replaced the fried resistor, but no improvement. Any suggestions as to next steps?

@fishbulb55 - Did the 1K resistor show any visible sign of damage prior to replacement, such as having overheated or burned through?

Can I send mine to you for repair?
Great instructions. Thank you. Regards, Hari
Excellent
Our fan light won't turn off when the fan is running. I can turn the power off and on to turn off the light but I cannot run the fan with the lights off. Any suggestions as to what to do or what can be done to repair this.
mrsdnoble mine does the opposite, they go off and on and then finally off
How fast does the fan spin when you press fan button? And try holding fan button and see how many beeps there are.
i have similar casablanca fan that is not fuctioning to theinteli-touch remote . It has curcuit board no 9901190 with 4 resistors standing upright. Do you do the same test ?.
I have a problem with my Casablanca fan the light goes on end off real fast
Is that a 10K Ohm?
How do I know how many ohms my fan has?
This is an inteli-touch fan 1987 or newer.
Does anyone know where I can get a Casablance W-11 switch? They stopped making these years ago.
Does anyone know the value of the triac that controls the lighting everything reads clear for me except it thanks in advance!
they have a new switch to purchase
mine keep breaking.
Can I send my board to you for repair??? I'll pay you more than 84 cents!!!!
