The responses in that interview are a relief honestly. VF has always been a great showcase of Japanese design philosophy. It’s beautiful in its simplicity yet complex for advanced players. I always liked its graphical and art design too because it’s never hard to see what’s happening on screen. I don’t have anything against meters and supers and stuff, my favorite games of all time all have meters and supers and crazy mechanics to some extent but the appeal of VF was always its beauty in simplicity while still having a ridiculously high skill ceiling.

      @NekoSmash ปีที่แล้ว +15

Very nicely said! I think the simplicity allows for focusing on the game's mechanics when things get heated. The most intense mind-straining FG battles I have experienced were in VF, as the game's clean cut logic allowed me to predict my opponent's patterns a couple of moves going forward and devising a strategy on the fly (it's more of a thought-out response than a reaction). There is a rhythm to the fight and things work as expected...feels like hyper action chess / dance-off :)

It got around 9 million downloads (iirc based on the interview with Harada) and player retention was high where SEGA made profits from the DLC costumes. If there's only one console they can released VF then PS is the right platform.
Also. Outside Smash, i don't think there are many people who used Switch as their primary platform for fighting games. Hence why we don't see SF 6, Tekken 7 & 8, KoF XV, Strive, SC 6, GranBlue, and many fighting games for Switch. VF doesn't need supers or comeback mechanics. Two guesses is all it takes for a comeback with most characters. The greatness of VF is that you're usually always close enough to the opponent and having to make decisions and react constantly. If anything we should have more options for down attacks to hit and less invincible frames on wakeup
I like character weight but trying to memorize all the different optimal combos for different weight can be a pain, especially when you add open and closed stance only combos into the mix.

@@nak3dxsnake absolutely. Plus, no one character feels like it has an advantage over all the others, the balancing is just perfect and I think a lot of that is due to the uniqueness of each fighting style, as no 2 characters are the same. Many fighting games these days have a few characters that all have very similar movesets and styles, which makes them feel more like palette swaps than other fighters and try to compensate with flashy super combos, that aren't really necessary in this sort of fighter.
I feel they kind of detract from the actual point of this kind of fighter, which is spectacle through nuanced and complex mechanics, in the hands of experts in play, rather than reliance on flash and bombast, through insane super combos / moves, full of bells and whistles. Things like Tekken's rage metre / combo's, are unnecessary and show a developers lack of confidence in their actual base mechanics, that made it such a great game to begin with, same with soul calibre.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to supermoves, I just guess I'm more of a traditionalist that sees them as part of a special move based fighter like street fighter et al. In games like Tekken's etc, they've always seemed out of place?
Like Max said, in VF you always play aggressively, it's just the way the game gets you to play over time, through it's mechanics, controls and learning curve, something Tekken and Soul Calibre both once had and I fear is sadly moving further and further away from?

One thing I would love to see in a potential VF6 that is obviously missing from the other entries is a story mode. Don't make it too long, just something for the fans to enjoy like the Tekken 7 Story Mode for example. And it writes itself since US was developped by the studio making the Yakuza Games : make it so X Yakura Clan organises a tournament or whatever to have "the best warrior blablabla" fight Dural to see they can mass produce it as their new guards for their clan or whatever. Campy as hell like a 90s movie, but fun, quick. Could be cool.

That Tekken 7 story mode was straight trash in every way, not exactly a good example....but yes, Virtua Fighter 6 needs to be more story-oriented (the characters *do* have personalities and likes & dislikes, you know), especially with the *anime* existing (which I have to admit, is pretty good so far). Speaking of the anime, they should add characters from the anime into the videogame Virtua Fighter canon, like *Tiger.* And give all the prior existing Virtua Fighter characters full-on redesigns, whilst adding more offline content, because there should *definitely* be more things to do on the side. Sega could add a *Puyo Puyo* minigame or something, maybe even a *Super Monkey Ball* one where the Virtua Fighter characters have returned to their iconic blocky models from the earlier games and just so happen to be stuck in translucent balls.

It's strange. I like VF due to it's very simple controls Sure, you have some complex moves. That one move Akira Yuki does. But it's less about using the most powerful, most frame perfect move, and more about knowing what your character's characteristics are like. How they move. And you pick what you like, rather than the game telling you that you must learn this one specific move to be good at this character.

    • @BCDC123

@@TheSuperSmashBros01 VF is the quickest game I’ve played barring KOF. It has such a cadence that when 2 players are in a flow-state, the decision rate is about 2 to 3 moves per second. But if you and your opponent don’t know that cadence, it will feel like the slowest game because the players are not understanding the rhythm.
The other thing that players do incorrectly is play footsies like you would in Tekken or SF. But it’s not a footsie game. It’s aggresive close-combat RPS, and if it’s not played that way, it doesn’t play well at all. Backdash is CH-punishable, so the best backwards movement is one of the worst movement options available. The consequence of this is that players are forced to play close with-amongst many other options--guard-throw-escape OS (because throws are OP), evade-throw-escape OS (because throws also track), or attack through a throw (because all attacks are throw-invis). Then rinse and repeat about 3 times a second. It’s fast as hell.

    • @BCDC123
      @BCDC123 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@WhatisaLee I’d also like to add, there are much wiser ways to create distance between yourself and the opponent though it can be risky.
Pai’s do it all the time to set up for her unblockable high running kick, Sarah can do a back punch and proceed to flip away from the opponent. Vanessa can do the same, getting into her floor stance (I forget the name of it at the moment) and she can roll away from the opponent while back turned.
Ofcourse you have El Blaze’s back flip kick that pushes the opponent away and creates a run situation for him.
There are definitely ways to create distance between the opponent. And I completely agree, the worst way can be to backdash depending on what attacks the opponent is throwing out.

Weight classes solve balance problems without adding mechanics. Lighter characters are faster, their jabs are often 1F less than bigger characters. They get more turns, but they can't hit as hard or combo as big against heavy characters.
Heavy characters might have to block or evade more often due to having a poke disadvantage. As compensation, they can do bigger combos against light characters when they tag them.
Having your combo not work the same against different characters because of their weight or because of closed/open foot position is more complicated, but it's generally such a slight optimization (with the exception of Taka) that it is in no way prohibitive for novice players.

They should also bring back that mode where you can tour different arcades, or something like it, and the npcs have their own play styles of different characters, and they can adapt to your playstyle to some degree. You do that and you have a ton of sweet unlockables, and you make it so you're constantly unlocking stuff, that would be an absolute knock out.

As Vf is my favorite fighting game series, I love to see it in the headlines, and this was a great interview.
One thing I've always loved about VF is that purity of purpose: it's about fighting. Yeah, the manual might talk about evil corporations, kidnapped mothers and the like, but that never surfaces in the games. It's just about easy-to-play yet hard-to-master fighting mechanics and a cast of colorful and unique fighters.
I wouldn't be opposed to a free-to-play model for a VF6, but I would hope that doesn't mean Sega skimps on the budget, which is a distinct possibility
I would also hope that they released a premium version alongside that had a good amount of quality single-player gameplay (I loved the "arcade" structure used in 4Evo, myself) for those of us who aren't online warriors.
All that said, I'm not sure how you really revolutionize or improve on 5US's mechanics. The game's just so fluid and fun to play all these years later; however, based on this interview, the people there now sound like they'd be the ones to find a way.

I don't agree with F2P to attract new players; VF5 already had a good tutorial system, which they should keep. Also F2P will just increase Sega's running costs, as they need to have developers working constantly to make new content post release, which means they won't be released to work on other Sega titles. 3D fighting games cost more to make than 2D fighting games so from a business point-of-view why do an F2P model when you can just get the money upfront by people just buying the game at release. Multiverse's issues are a good example of what happens if a F2P game starts to lose interest.

Grew up with VF2 in the arcades and played almost every version after that, FS is my favorite, with that said it would be nice to modernize it a bit just for ease of use. Jackie is my main but even him being one of the easiest character there are some moves that are tricky to do because u need to press grab in a frame of animation when a move hits instead of holding grab, other characters like Shun Di have way too many stances, Kage has a 3 hit combo where u need to press the next move every time it connects for it to work. I know some characters are hard on purpose like Akira but some of the moves should be more accessible. It just seems like it's hard for making it hard, in VF2 i used to play good with every character but in the later games it's gotten more and more complex u can have only 1 or 2 main(s). Removing character weight is a must, it's annoying that some combos will work on some characters and other won't and will drop bc of weight maybe also rethink rolling when touching the ground, it makes ground attacks worthless.
I hope they bring back Quest mode and even expand it where u play like a 3rd person game and u actually go to different arenas or stores, imagine having that movement from Yakuza like how they used VF FS as a minigame.

I don't think people will take to virtua fighter if it just does the same thing again with better netcode. It became niche for a reason

it's amazing that sega is the only ones that seem even remotely interested in preserving the games fundamental core.

I miss VF. My first and only was VF5 on Xbox. I was a DOA player to start, but I loved VF5. I would love to see another one.

Vf high standart graphics and design would make f2p a very risky move. I think sf6 and mortal combat show that players like complete game made with decent content (and VF6 doen't need to be that huge, while keeping his ground martial art roots it just need to make the game cooler to a casual audience).

Very good point. VF was always a technical showcase.
Animations alone cost shit tons of money. I don't want VF to be a free to play 😥

I would love for a new VF game, but honestly, I'd love for a VF x Tekken game. 2 kings of the 3D fighting games need to clash for real

Virtua Fighter more than ANY fighting game represents a distillation of a fighting system rule set. I chock it up to be similar in chess where there are not new chess versions coming out but the game is so compelling that people continue to play it.

You'd think with the amount of fighting games coming out now they would do a new VF and Soul Calibur
Heck bring back Bloody Roar again

Really sad that it's the 30th anniversary for this series, that paved for Tekken and doa, and Sega hasn't even mention a 30th collection for switch and systems with vf1 2 3 megamix , 4 and 5 (2006) version. Just sonic sonic sonic

I’m a little surprised they’ve never made a Virtua Fighter with true 3D movement like an AKI wrestling game and stuff like Def Jam Fight for NY, Urban Reign, and Power Stone. If they’re looking to add some big new element that would make a new Virtua Fighter definitely from the previous one, true 3D movement would be a big one.
The designer of Virtua Fighter and creator of Tekken did end up going that 3D movement route, but it’d be interesting to see how something that plays like Virtua Fighter would feel like that.

True 3d movement would low key be a game changer.
