  • What's the definition of insanity? Gus Van Sant's Psycho is a shot-for-shot remake of the Alfred Hitchock classic. Maligned by fans and disregarded by critics, this remake has quickly fallen into irrelevancy. Does this modern version of Psycho deserve the hate or is there some merit beneath the familiar surface?

16:01 Anthony Perkins's Norman was a guy with a split personality who blacked out when he switched to Mother. He couldn't help himself, wasn't responsible for his actions and couldn't remember what the Mother personality had done once he was back to himself. Vince Vaughn's Norman came off like he didn't have a split personality at all and was just a creepy guy who liked dressing up as his mother and killing people.

Gus Van Sant said that he did this to see if a movie would have the same effect on an audience if it was a total recreation of a movie that everybody knew. My thought on that is, "Isn't the answer to that pretty obvious? Did you really need to spend so much time and money to figure that out?"

@Jason Loper Yeah, but the thing is, film is such a different medium than theater, and reviving a play is so much different an undertaking than making a movie, original or remake, that I'm not sure that approach really holds water.

    • @Layne618
      @Layne618 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Jason Loper No, I have heard that Van Sant did say that was part of his approach, so it wasn't a waste of time at all.
And given what Cody said in the Tenet review he put up, I just want to announce this: people, what Jason Loper and I are doing is how you have a civil, adult conversation about film, rather than resorting to stupid name-calling over differences of opinion.

When I saw that you uploaded this, my day was made. It made me realize that William H Macy and Julianne Moore are indeed the only good actors casted in this movie. They did nail those roles. Vince Vaughn was the most out of place actor in this movie. The exact opposite of what Norman Bates would be. Even my aunt said that Vince Vaughn was the worst idea just by his appearance alone. Viggo Mortensen was okay as Sam but not nearly as good as John Gavin. I still say Fuck this movie because of how pointless the shit is.

Now I know this is an old video, but this very video is what introduced me to this channel, I came across this channel in in late 2021 (it was around October-December of that year) and I've been hooked on this channel since. And boy did this channel shape me into the person I am now, Cody really sticks out from various other film reviewers, unlike other film reviewers like Nostalgia Critic, Cinimasacure, and various other film reviewers that I've seen, Cody stands out because he is one of those people who can accept and embrace other people's opinions on other films (with the acception of "Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare" (sorry you had to read those 5 words again Cody)) and I also like how when Cody reviews various movies it's all subjective, and he also gives various justifiable reasons as to why he may or may not like a certain thing, with other film reviewers most of them just are like "this thing sucks, and just accept it, let's move on!" Not to say all film reviewers are like that, though a lot of them can be. With Cody it is like "I don't like this aspect of the movie because of this reason." And the last reason why I love this channel so much is because it inspires me to do reviews of my own and despite not seeing some of the movies reviewed on this channel I can embrace them for what they are (I have seen the original Nightmare on Elm Street on Halloween of 2021, along with Friday the 13th part 3, SAW, and countless other films) now I know this may be a cheesy comment but it really shows how impactful this channel is to me, I hope one day I can do film reviews of my own but otherwise, if I didn't come across this channel I wouldn't have been the person I am today in terms of fairness & opinions. Although I am financially unavailable to support Cody on Patreon, treat this comment as a token of appreciation.

How would Psycho be remade well though? What can be changed and what is sacred? I'm thinking what if the Craine sisters were identical twins and Norman couldn't tell them apart, eventually leading to him letting it slip "I thought Mother killed you." What if Mother wasn't actually dead and it turned out she was the actual killer? She had been manipulating Norman into thinking he has "blackouts" and is responsible. I'm thinking Linda Hamilton would be perfect in that role. Even though the twist is great, the idea of an old woman doing the killings is somewhat scarier imo.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Doing the opposite would be interesting since in the original Psycho book and film you think Mother's alive and doing the killing then it turns out Norman killed her a decade ago and created a split personality which killed women he was attracted to out of jealousy. So making people think things would go the same way only for it to turn out that Norma really was alive and doing the killing would be interesting. It's like the Marion Crane twist they did in the Bates Motel show since in the original you think Marion will be the main character but she gets killed in the shower shortly into it. But in Season 5 of Bates Motel you're made to think Marion will die just like in the book and film but she survives and leaves the motel with the stolen money. And in the show it's Sam Loomis who gets killed in the shower and also Norman kills Sam as himself not Mother.

  • @DarthRushy

I don't want to see anyone replace Anthony Perkins, especially after how Psycho IV tied up his story. If anything, they should make a Psycho reboot about Norman's child going back to the ruins of the motel. Maybe Norman was right and his child does go insane like he did and his split personality would be the evil self and Father(aka Norman) trying to keep him on the good path. Something different and new, but still calling back to the old films.

    • @Xehanort10

It's more like a bad Scooby Doo episode than a Psycho film since it's about an old cellmate of Norman's who inherits the Bates Motel after his death but a real estate developer pretends to be Norman's mother to scare the guy and the people he has helping him fix up the house and motel so the developer can sell it.

    • @bbbylw

@@Xehanort10 And then there's another story about a young woman who checks in to one of the cabins intending to kill herself and is visited by the ghosts of other young people who died by suicide who convince her to live. The movie was a backdoor pilot for a series but wasn't picked up, but I guess the idea was that new guests would check in in each episode and the main characters would get mixed up in their lives. It's just a really odd curio though, worth a watch if you're a fan of Psycho, just seeing the iconic sets used in this weird new context is kind of amusing.

Just a horrible movie that deserved to be a box office bomb and every Raspberry award that it got. The biggest transgression is not using the classic Bates house but rather some fake facade placed in front of it. Anne Heche was just terrible. Vince Vaughn was horrible at creating a mysterious character. The character of Lila Crane trying to be a modern action hero just didn't work either. There was just no need for this movie to ever be made. I saw it at the theater and was disgusted with it in the first few minutes.

Didn't see it but Norman in Bloch's novel is closer to Vince Vaughn than Anthony Perkins. Hitchcock was wise to cast someone less ominous though. It might have been interesting to see an adaptation that looked like the Novel, but that is really the only way to present a remake of such a well-known novel.

The movie I’m about to mention isn’t horror, it’s actually Disney, but the most recent example of a shot-for-shot remake is the Lion King movie. I actually really enjoyed it though.

LOL! I could never quite put my finger on it, but you nailed it here: The biggest issue I have with Anne Heche movies is the fact that Anne Heche is in them.
Dunno what it is about her, but I just can't bring myself to like her.

I liked some of the casting choices and the new look to the house. But other then that, I could care less for this film. Maybe if it wasn't shot for shot and changed the story to their own vision, it could have been a good film

It surprises me Psycho (1998) had a $60 Million budget, and did the exact same thing that the original Psycho did, which only had an $800,000 budget. More money, but somehow barely different.

The only reason for this movie remake existence, is to undoubtably prove to everyone, that the strong and impactful character of Norman Bates works, entirely due to Antony Perkins presence and powerful performance. Just in case, the original 1960 Hitchcock version, didn't undoubtably convince you.

Think when you have something as iconic as Psycho you get someone like Gus Van Sant doing a shot to shot remake, that happened with the JJ Star Trek and Star Wars.

This movie hurts so bad. I love the original film & even wrote a 4 page paper in high school that scored me a triple A+ from my teacher. I get that Gus Van Sant wanted to pay respect to Hitchcock, but he failed miserably by just doing the entire film over again but with worse acting and putting it in color

  • @satyendrandonibanerjee8682

I feel like the only way you could do a remake of psycho without having to copy the original is if you make the new version not a remake but a second adaptation to the Robert Bloch novel because if you were to compare the Alfred Hitchcock Psycho film to the Robert Bloch novel there are plenty of differences most notably with the characterization of Norman Bates. I feel like that opportunity was brought to Gus Van Sant here but he wasted it by doing a shot for shot re-creation of the original.

Remember in your review for the original Psycho where Norman’s voice is heard saying, “Mother! Oh God, mother! Blood! Blood!” You said it was really corny, right? Well, that just happens to be the ONLY thing I liked about this remake. I thought Vince Vaughn’s reading of that line was a lot better than Anthony Perkins’ performance.

A Psycho remake should never happen, that’s a given. But if they H A V E to, they should go a completely different direction. The visual inverse, like the Suspiria remake. Instead of Hitchcock’s psychological yet grounded approach, maybe go for something a little more abstract and serial. It should also be an almost precise adaptation of the original novel.

Honestly, a pointless remake could mean that it's worse than a bad or even terrible movie. If a movie is really bad, you can at least watch it and laugh at how bad it is. I've done that with a couple horror movies. But if a movie is pointless, it becomes boring, and in my opinion, that's even worse, because you can't even laugh at how bad it is. If a movie can't get a single reaction from you, then you know it's fucked up.

If its done in a Strangers/You're Next manner with intelligent and capable characters I think itd be good. Equally refreshing if the victims were to turn the tables, and go against the stereotypes of horror. An honest opinion from a novel writer. People enjoy subterfuge. Use the opportunity to create clever characters.

Most remakes cannot catch the magic of the original.
    Nightmare couldn't do it
    Child's play kinda did
    The thing definitely did
It's sad most remakes cannot do it.
This has been a great series. Enjoyed it. Would you ever do the Hellraiser franchise? Another movie view coming out next year.
