    it was only $14 to send all that chain, i work on forklifts for a living so all that chain is new cut offs. can't wait to see what you do with it. the other piece is part of a cutting blade for an excavator. and i love the skull, very cool

    • @philipprigmore8723
      @philipprigmore8723 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, if you have any more of that cut off, and want to send some to a poor old timer in Ohio, let me know and I will provide you with my address. I can definitely afford the postage, but that's about all I can do. Sorry, but I am retired and living on a very fixed income.

      i can get as much as you want "within reason lol" but i like to trade for other stuff. what do you have to trade?

    • @philipprigmore8723

      Not really sure. Hadn't thought about that. I do have some excellent walnut 12" x 2" square blanks and a couple of cherry of the same dimension. Will have to think about it.Thanks for the quick response.

    Learning a lot from you, one thing I have been taught all my life is that as individuals we really have no limits and multiple people working together makes that so much more infinitely true. You have proven this very well. That skull for first time run is excellent!

  • @brianlawson3757
    @brianlawson3757 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    That came out really well. I thought it would distort more, even under the press. I've often wondered if it was possible to achieve something similar by taking a stacked layer billet and grinding a simple outline into the face of the billet with a rotary tool and then pressing it flat. I got the idea watching an old video on raindrop pattern damascus. Might be something neat to try out one day.
    I can't wait to see what that forklift chain looks like welded up 😎

    That's some wicked Damascus! I like both sides of the 💀, it'll be interesting to see the billet after you've completed the mosaic pattern. I'd be curious what it would look like if you were to do two billets of each skull pattern alternating.
    Great to hear you're feeling better! The anvil was amazing, the 3D printing material keeps getting stronger, I was surprised that it poked a hole in the package! Stickers were awesome, had your daughters drawing perfect and scrappy and Floyd was funny 😂. I wonder if the usps still does the flat rate boxes, if they do, they got owned with that much chain! It's always a surprise how much material you can get from the chains.
    It'd be funny if you were to use the chain as the teeth for your next Damascus skull lol. It's kinda like having the top and bottom teeth 😂!
    I finally received all of the scrap exotic wood and now starting to figure out if I can make some cool knife scales. I'll ship them out as soon as I get done! Will be trying to make a "3Dish" pattern and if I fail horribly, then it'll be a chaotic pattern scales. I'm watching all of TH-cam channel mtmwood videos on his epic 3D cutting boards, like yourself his craftsmanship is off the charts!
    Take care bud! Great video as always!

    • @BIGDOGFORGE
      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Phillip, glad to hear you got the material in the mail I'm sure you're going to do a fantastic job of making knife scales.
      And thank you so much for sending the knives, as soon as I am able to I will be putting out a video on the blades for those knives.
      Sorry it's been so long since I've replied to anyone's comments I just haven't been feeling up to it but things are getting much better, it makes me wonder how you do it on a daily basis, I have a lot of respect for someone who can go through this every day and still have such a positive attitude. My hat's off to you brother. Thanks again Phillip and thanks for being such an inspiration.
      Take care and be safe.

    • @he-mansuncle7661
      @he-mansuncle7661 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BIG DOG FORGE No worries bud, just make sure you listen to your body and take a longer break than you normally would. That's probably the best advice I can give to someone like yourself. You work your tail off, just make sure you take breaks, ice or heat, and elevate your legs. Even if it's a back injury, elevating your legs can help take the pressure away and ease the pain.
      One other thing that I've started to do that helps is after you wake up, stay in bed for 5-15 mins, but with multiple pillows behind your back and neck while being more elevated. Then I move my legs around, basically put one leg on top of the other knee, move my ankles and muscles for a bit and switch. It has seemed to help me be able to get out of bed easier lol... Usually the dogs have moved basically on top of me when I fall asleep so I play with them in bed, or get on my phone and check the usual.
      I forgot to ask about your cane, did the doctor tell you to use it on the opposite side of your injury? That's another suggestion I would recommend, take advantage of the cane in the mornings until you've moved around a bit.
      Well that was long... lol
      Hopefully they turn out to be something cool and different. I have a large assortment of exotic woods to mess around with. Just hope the end product justifies the damascus knives that will be attached!
      If you ever have questions about some other things that can possibly help with pain, please don't hesitate to email me! I've tried basically everything and have been put through the ringer with doctors.
      Don't rush it bud, if your body says not today, stay inside and lay down and have big dog keep you entertained and help take your mind off of the pain itself.
      Take care and relax bud!
      Much respect
      Phillip

      It sounds like you're staying busy as always, I'm going to be doing a little bit of experimentation with this batch that I'll be making more in the near future hopefully with a better pattern, if I have some left over would you like me to send you the chunk?

      Sure, you know I am always open to some of your excellent materials. LOL. The knives I just made are Damascus, but I bought the Damascus. They were just simple style 10 inch blades but the handle scales are beautiful. One is stabilized curly Maple and the other is Eastern Cedar. Talk about smelling up the house with a beautiful fragrance, start grinding on some cedar.

    That's pretty cool. I never heard of canister welding before. I would have thought that the lack of flux and the air trapped in there would have been a problem, causing a bunch of porosity. I imagine you'd have to do the sizing down more gradually if you want to avoid distorting it as much.

    Great video! I've always wondered how patterns like this were made. 25+ years ago when I was making stock removal knives I met Steve Schwartz (sp) or maybe Schwartzer(sp) can't remember, at a local rendezvous and he showed me a pattern welded folder he had made with the American Flag in the blade. I've wondered to this day how he might have done it. Bought me a Peter Wright anvil on Friday marked 1 2 17, and as soon as I can get up some scrap metal I'm going to start forging some tongs, hammers, and building a power hammer like yours.

      Thank you for the information on finishing blades with the Brass mandrel that sounds like a great idea I will give it a try.
      Sounds like you got a good deal on an anvil . It's always good to hear someone is jumping in or jumping back into the craft.
      Thank you for all the comments I do appreciate to keep the great ideas coming. And thanks again for watching take care.

    Powdered cast iron: a little goes a long way to add carbon content
    Nickle: brightens the steel up
    Chromium: a bit of toughness and brightness
    Vanadium: Use a couple flakes of it with the cast iron and base iron, the mixture will do what traditional damascus does and the vanadium will create a carbide lattice in a high carbon steel matrix.
    just since I noticed that you're working with powder chemistry and alloys. Usually these powders are pretty cheap online and go a long way when you're using standard iron powder as your base mix. And, not that you need it for impurities since it's all been refined, but I find that borax can be necessary to the most minor of extents to help keep oxides under control which helps with the iron powder and how quickly it oxidizes. As always, add any element in sparing quantity, but they can make for quite an awesome steel if you pull off the right mix, especially since you know it will all forge weld without an issue.
    But I'm not trying to come at you like a pro, I'm just a student of the art. Maybe there's some useful stuff in there, maybe it's all a ton of garbage you're well aware of, but either way I hope I helped a little. The skull turned out awesome, by the way. If they were smaller in nature, you could stack them end on end and make them in to a wicked sword core with a 1080-1095 edge welded in. You've inspired me to experiment on some things now :)

    Commin back with a BANG! Lol .. What a cool project Tim! I'm glad you picked up some good 1084 and iron powders since your last canister experiments using grinder dust 😉👍. I think it turned out great, especially for a first try. I think with at least one of the halves, you should draw it out a bit more and do at least one, 2x2 square stack (4 skulls) of the skulls before creating the actually billet via ferry flip or accordion cut etc. I think it'll look cool, and I personally think 'most' canister image patterns look better when they are a bit smaller with more of them, i.e. in mosaic. But either way great job! I also loved how you used the shotgun barrel for the eyes, such a cool idea.
    I'm not sure if you have ever seen or heard of him/them but you should check out Master Smith, Don Hanson III and his "Scary Tac" line of folders. He uses mosaic Damascus for the bolsters in which he incorporates skulls, bats, spiders and other random shapes. You might pick up some neat ideas. Here is a link to his webpage gallery showing those: www.sunfishforge.com/hansontactgallery.html
    Anyway, It's really great to see you back at it again and doing well. Continue to heel up well and smoothly. I hope to hear from ya soon and chat more frequently brother, feels like it's been quite a while. Also hope all has been well with you and yours. Take care for now :)
