@@mareksicinski3726 He had gone on an indefinite break after facing harassment over the video "I Like Girls". This was his official statement:
"My name is Jo and I’ve been making videos on youtube for 5 years. I’ve a combined total of about 200 videos and hundreds of hours of content. On October 6, 2020 I did a live stream of the early access release of Baldur’s Gate 3, and during character creation I did a bit where I briefly sing a genderbent parody of Lizzo’s “Boys”
It seemed to go over well with my audience and all of my friends. I typically do these kinds of bits for my live streams sometimes. I was also partly inspired by the source of where I first heard Lizzo’s song - Hakkim Animation’s video
Running the idea by my friends, who are all very encouraging and supportive of me, I decided it could be a fun project to animate the brief stream moment for my youtube audience who may miss or not be interested in my live streams. And so on April 2nd of the following year, I finished and uploaded my I Like Girls video, and it got a universally positive response from my audience, my peers, and my partner.
About a year later, it seemed to have reached outside its target audience and ever since then I have seen and received many assumptions about my character, my history, my beliefs, my relationships, and all those of my partner, as well as threats of violence to me as well as my family, doxxing attempts, and mocking from even people I look up to and respect. All from a single 30 second video, out of 200 other ones.
Granted, a lot of this has been primarily on twitter, where I could simply log off and ignore the haters, but no small amount has leaked into other parts of my regular day to day that is harder to ignore - private DMs over discord and twitch, suspicious packages being sent to my family - but I’ve always kept quiet about it because speaking out about it publicly, defending myself, any reaction to it would just encourage more, and be presented as my own fault as well. But if that’s the tradeoff to do something like share the things I make that I’m proud of on the internet, seeing as I’m writing this, it’s probably an indicator that I’m just not cut out for it, and the best thing for everyone would be to stop and pursue something else. Despite being very grateful for what this job has done for me and my family, I’m simply not strong enough to keep doing this if it means having to just accept this kind and amount of distress. Perhaps that makes me weak, but I’ve rarely ever really thought otherwise.
I never meant to make anyone upset, I only ever just wanted to make things I was passionate about for fun. I never intended for this one video to really be all that much deeper than just a thing I wanted to do on a whim because I thought it could be fun. I never planned to have youtube be my job, but people happened to like what I made so I thought it could be a good idea to make more of it, and use it to pursue projects I’ve always wanted to make as well as be the change in youtube I wanted to see. I was inspired by the channels I watched growing up, and the wonderful friends that have encouraged and inspired me to be who I am and make what I want.
I still want to make things, but perhaps I should just keep them to myself for the time being. For anyone that cares, I’ll still be continuing Heart of Elynthi and the JOmega charity, but once those are finished I will be taking an indefinite break from posting anything online. It’s a decision I’ve considered ever since the first hate wave from about a year or so ago but wanted to sit on it and see if the feeling would persist. I know now this is the best choice for me.
If you took the time to read all of this, thank you. I’m sorry for causing so much trouble. Thank you for watching my videos
      JoCat"

I'm so glad to see JoCat here on Geekenders! He was legitimately the person I was hoping to see the most hopping on here, let alone having a discussion on d&d/ttrpgs.
As far as the discussion on the nature of D&D being an almost sort of 'pirates code', the system is actually (kind of weirdly so, at least in my opinion) designed in that sense, as there's a number of rules and aspects of 5e that are left vague or undefined under the assumption of "Oh, well, everyone's just going to do that their own way at their own table anyway, so why bother defining that".
And to a design degree, I get it? However, as what Jo was saying of how he wishes there was more available rulesets, ones that you do not HAVE to implement into your games, but they are there to help spice up your game, if you want something a little more complex. There's a lot of other ttrpg systems that pretty much do this exactly actually, Pathfinder 2nd edition being a more direct comparison to D&D has a much more defined set of rules to go by, but the devs have very much opened the doors to be like "Hey, here's how we have designed the game, here's all these systems, and subsystems... but you don't NEED this at your table, at the end of the day the GM and their players have the final say of what you want within your game."
Which I think ultimately is a better way of handling things rather than just leaving decent swaths of the game's rules either vague or underdeveloped under the assumption that everyone is going to run things a bit different and people will naturally fill in the blanks. Definitely a personal opinion and I am sure others would disagree, but I am of the opinion that it's better to have a more defined set of guidelines, with the room to change things out if you don't like them (using PF2E as another prime example, there's a lot of 'varient' rules to change how the game plays. Free Archetype, Remove level scaling, Make item-based character improvements automatic via levels so that money is strictly used to by more 'fun' items rather than needing to prioritize getting things that give you strict number increases, etc...)
Very cool discussion to hear from you guys~

one of the best lines TB ever said and will always stay with me:
    "fuck your artistic vision"

For that "persuasion health bar" concept y'all talked about, I'm playing a samurai-flavored TTRPG called "Legend of the Five Rings" with a system like that! Players and NPCs have a "strife" stat, and if you go over your cap you lose composure in the scene, causing new stuff to happen. It's a lot of fun, and it could definitely be borrowed/used as inspiration for different systems!

    • @blasterman1000
      @blasterman1000 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Blades in the Dark/Wicked Ones using the Forged in the Dark system typically has things to do with stress. You can spend stress for a lot of different things, but basically the more you have to push yourself, the more stressed you get. When you cap your stress, different things happen. In Blades in the Dark, these turn into traumatic events which then forever influence your character as your mental breakdown develops usually negative personality traits you then have to deal with forever- too many of them, and you basically have a meltdown and canonically retire the character because they just cannot deal anymore.
In Wicked Ones, the stress bar is much smaller but less punitive, and you choose a way your little monster responds when it goes "Feral" from getting pushed to its limit, often having fantastically big effects on a scene, but compelling them to act on baser impulses (and you choose what that would be like during character creation) and then resets at the start of every session/past every downtime phase when they've had the chance to take a break and blow off some steam.
I like the idea of bringing a sort of meter that leads to a loss of composure that those systems have, and I recommend checking them out.

RE: P5, a friend of mine spoke about it when it came out. He went with teach and I went with Makoto and his reasoning is “I’m an adult, and Joker is the vehicle for me the player, so I’m gonna relate to tired adult character’s problems” while my rationale is “Joker is not me, Joker is a character who is in high school, so I’m gonna play this character as though I was writing this character”
I’d say either viewpoint can be valid in a blank slate, but the consensus the world came to was “that’s a student dating their teacher”

10:22 "They desperately need alternate success conditions for encounters" Good point, and the Persuasion meter is such an interesting idea too (it reminds me of Starfield's persuasion system). The three pillars of D&D are exploration, social interaction, and combat; so if people feel there's too much emphasis on combat then the other two pillars might deserve more consideration.
1:10:55 "There's 3 of them?" Well, now JoCat just has to play the Cat Quest games (it's meant to be, and it's on-brand) 🐱

In terms of D&D options, assuming your table is up for it, the style of roleplay described in "The Game Master's Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying" is absolutely fantastic.
It definitely gives you ideas to build in options that do not necessarily come down to combat, but it's important that the DM and players are all on the same page before trying to do something like this.

I could be wrong, but I feel like the "game too big" issue is almost exclusively applied to people who play video games for a living. For those of us that just want to buy one game every few months and immerse ourselves in it, there isn't such a thing as too big. Now that's not to say that big means good, since it also has to be fun to play, of course.

I understand what Dodger is saying about Potionomics, but I personally really liked how they worked the social part into the gameplay loop. The cards you get for hanging out with/dating the characters are where you get the combos and synnergies that you build your deck around and can completely change the way it plays, which ends up feeling like you are getting better at running your shop because of the advice you get from your closest friends. I can see why someone would rather just see all the relationship dialogue, but I personally enjoyed the way that they made relationships matter for gameplay by basically basically making them your talent tree.

also jocat moments later said need additional success types (leans in) you mean pf2e four lvls of success? literally any complain or disappointment of dnd feature is improved/fixed in pathfinder 2e. literally wotc hired paizo writers to be involved with the new dnd update, but seeing what ppl posts and the leaked pdf the ex writers on purpose held back major features on why pf2e ppl favor its features. (claps hands) thank you ex writers. honestly wotc might have told them not to mimic much of pf2e do to branding reasons and dont want comparison comments, similar to the whole marvel namor changes in mcu against wb/dc aquaman backstory. but because of that then the new dnd stuff is pretty much on a leash and cant go far restricting on what it can do and how ppl play with it.

Plenty of TTRPG's have non-combat systems for "victory". Just not D&D because D&D has made itself into a battle simulator and nothing else. There is nothing preventing you from doing that, but aside from the fairly easy task of coming up with some mechanics for it, the GM has to actually MAKE encounters that have victory conditions other than "and they're all dead." And the GM needs to set player expectations to establish that non-combat characters will be viable (maybe not EVERY encounter), and that trying to come up with non-violent ways to resolve the GM's encounters is 100% ok, and encouraged. I think the biggest hurdle for this, is that it requires the GM to be very good at improv and being able to adjust to the situation. And a lot of D&D centric GM's, are just essentially damage calculators for the combat stats, and nothing more. They don't actually set anything up to BE anything other than a combat simulator.

I think the problem with D&D combat is that most monsters are just hitpoints and damage. Giving the monsters and players goals other than killing the enemy and giving the enemy weirder requirements to get the best damage (EX you have to knock this giant turtle monster prone to expose their weakpoint otherwise their AC is like 24). Is probably my best recommendation.

Okay wait as a huge fan of Potionomics, I have to question your discussion about the "time conflict" between potion making and spending time with the NPCs. Making potions doesn't cost any time slots. The act of combining ingredients in your cauldron and loading it up with fuel, that costs no time. The brewing takes time to complete, but you don't have to "pass time" for that to happen. It progresses when you deal with customers, sleep, or... spend time with NPCs. I don't see how there's a conflict.

While I definitely see where JoCat is coming from with the Persona 5 thing I don’t think I can agree that they’re the same situation.
While the Kawakami situation is extremely weird and questionable it isn’t a fraction as bad as Kamoshida is. That dude was mentally, physically and arguably sexually abusing pretty much all of his students.

What is it about Persona games that completely shuts off people's ability to comprehend what's happening directly in front of them? How hard is it to just...pay attention?
It's totally fair to point out that it's a little weird, especially given the events of the story, but there's literally no way you can compare Kamoshida's crimes and the option to romance Kawakami, unless you were actually just playing the game with your eyes closed.

Something to note is that fromsoft has stated repeatedly their design of dark souls and Elden ring have been heavily influenced by their own limitations as a studio, and the iteration in each subsequent game is them attempting to get better at their strengths and tackle specific weaknesses. And that goes for a lot of development if not all of it. Decisions aren't made purely out of "this is better than this" or "players expect this" it's also "our strengths are here, let's push that as far as we can, and then examine it after it's done"

  • @LichyNyx

In Lancer, which is a Mecha D&D 4e inspired game, every combat has an objective built in that you are trying to achieve and while it's not perfect and requires a bit of tweaking, having those objectives does make fights a lot less about just destroying the enemy and makes abilities that shut them down or push them off of objective points a very important goal for your character.
I don't think D&D needs to do everything but if you find it wanting for something else there certainly are other ttrpgs out there that may give you more of what you want and are often times easier to get into as well as cheaper than D&D.

I like how Jesse was saying developers wouldn't go, "we are making a smaller game that takes less time to beat and has less content" when that's exactly what Ubi did with Assassin's Creed Mirage.
It's a 20 to 30 hour game with a smaller open world and less content, and it's a fantastic game, probably the best AC in years.
