I think a lot of people have the same problem as you. I believe you can give it a try by using dynamic eq or by using the soothe2 plugin. Soothe2 is really a problem solver!!!

but where do i get MIXING references? i just have access to finished MASTERED songs

This is a good question, i have found 3 good solutions about it. 1st is to buy stem packs aka construction kits, 2nd is to enter on remix contests (you will be provided with stems), 3rd is to look out for courses that offer a template project or at least the stems included.
