    Some of these lamps are like, "how many ways can we charge a premium for a bit of LED tape on a stick?" The Floor Lamp could be any old lamp with an RGB bulb installed.

      I actually did a double take when I saw the app he used for the floor lamp, which is exactly the same for my RGB bulb in my floor lamp. It was a $7 smart bulb off amazon. And I don't have to buy a whole new lamp when the bulb inevitably dies, because it uses this new fangled tech called a socket! Integrated LEDs in normal lamps or light fittings are a scam.
      Lightbulb makers created planned obsolescence over 100 years ago, and no way they're ever giving it up. Integrated LEDS now mean they can make you replace the entire lamp every time, not just the bulb!
      I sometimes wonder what awesome stuff we could have if companies purposefully made products the best they could be, not the worst they can get away with

    • @jjjacer
      @jjjacer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      yep, bet the life would be alot less with the warm or daylight lights as those are usually the brightest

    • @jeffreygordon7194
      @jeffreygordon7194 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's using pulse width modulation to dim it, which accounts for the flicker. This is essentially turning it on and off very quickly in proportion to how bright you want it. I doubt it's using 1/4 of the battery it would under constant load.

    • @nazmulfahad3044
      @nazmulfahad3044 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes red (among primary colors) draws more current. So a color that uses more red will last less compared to green and blue.

    • @antibrevity
      @antibrevity 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending upon the timing, the dimming and changing colors could potentially double the battery life over the solid colors and some colors will draw more power than others. The initial warm white in the sequence would probably make a good baseline.
      Most any battery-powered LED light that has changing and dimming effects will extend the battery life based upon how much time is spent at lower powers or full off versus higher powers or full on. More LED's turned on at once = less runtime. Brighter LED's = less runtime. You get the idea ;).

    • @soylencer
      @soylencer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nazmulfahad3044 I can't validate that, but I can assume that it's using an RGB controller, and lighter/brighter colors will use more power due to the need for all three lights to be on full blast to create white light.

    I'm surprised that LumiCharge lamp wasn't brighter than it was. I have a similar looking lamp (minus the wireless charging and time/temp, but it does have an extra USB) that I only paid $30 for, and it can easily get bright enough to light up my bedroom. Has several light modes as well (warm and cool) when doing different tasks like working, or reading, or relaxing. It also has a 1 hr timer shutoff button, which is really handy for wanting the light on a bit longer while climbing into bed but not wanting to reach from bed to finally turn it off. I've had mine now for several years and really like it. I do think the $99 you paid was too much. For $50 I might be more inclined to upgrade.

      But while looking for the one I bought, I also found one just like the lamp reviewed in the video, but instead of $99, it's only $30. It's an AFROG brand, with 4.4 stars. Has wireless charging and looks like it has great reviews. If I didn't already have the one I do, I would likely go for that one.

    I heard that discrepancies in Amazon listings are often because Amazon has their own people who input the info for the listing based on manufacturer comments. I see it is often inaccurate. I would trust the packaging or my own tests before trusting Amazon listings. I have often gone to the manufacturer's sites just to see the actual measurements or specifications, particularly with technology.

    For the book lamp, you had it cycle through colors, so it dimmed and brightened and dimmed. This saved energy (similar to improved gas mileage when cars turn off and restart at stop signs). You should pick one solid color, and see how long it'll last.

    I like that first book light. I think $30 is absolutely acceptable, as long as the build quality is there, which it looks like it is.

  • @MSmith-Photography
    @MSmith-Photography 3 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    The flickering is related to your camera's fps not matching the light's frequency. For example, if you're shooting at 30fps and the light's frequency isn't 30Hz, you'll see the flickering.

    • @rolls_8798
      @rolls_8798 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the frequency would be several orders of magnitude greater than 30Hz (think MEGA hertz). it uses pulse width modulation to control the brightness (it's a pretty interesting technology and is used in almost every piece of tech and power supply produced in the last two decades). the only way to get them to sync up then is if the frame rate was a factor of the frequency, if it is slightly off, then you might get very occasional flickers instead. most smartphone cameras will detect this flickering and automatically slow down the frame rate until it goes away. this isn't possible in this case since the constantly changing brightness comes as a result of a constantly changing frequency, or rather 'pulse length' - called duty cycle I think

    • @audacitytheeditor3225
      @audacitytheeditor3225 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically things like that will be different LEDs, not necessarily brightness. Color temperature CAN be based on power, but personally I would design it with a different LED with a different diffuser to save power.

    • @floyd2386
      @floyd2386 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think so, how much I don't know, but I know red LEDs typically have a lower voltage than white or other colors. Having the light cycle between different colors like they were in his test probably gave the best possible runtime as the lights weren't on at their maximum brightness constantly.

    I recently changed out most of my lighting for Feit Electronics Smart LED Color Bulbs.
    $10 for 60 watt equivalent, $20 for 100 watt equivalent. Cuts power requirements by over 90%.
    Controllable by Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Voice, or a Feit Apple/Android app.
    I’ve only been using it for about a month, so far, but I like it. And standard bulbs can go into any existing lamp.
    Much more flexible than the custom lamps. Custom effects and dynamic animations are possible, but I haven’t tried those yet.

    My favorite new light-related thing is the new led multi-colored bulbs that can be controlled through Alexa, with voice, or with the Alexa app. It is so cool! I can tell Alexa to turn it on or off, tell her what color to show (there are many different colors, 10+) and I can also tell Alexa to dim or brighten the light. The bulb fits into any regular lamp. There was an incredible deal on amazon last week and i only paid $1. It is usually $14.99.

    The LumiCharge sounds really cool except for one thing. I think that losing the time/date whenever it's unplugged is a big con. One of the best things about my (now old) clock radio is that has a backup battery, so if it loses power, it will hold onto the time, radio presets, and alarm settings for at least six hours. These days, most devices that people use to check the time have a way of instantly getting the time and date over the internet. How annoying it would be to have that one clock have to be reset every time you move it or experience a power outage.

    Interesting design on that floor lamp. A good comparison for it, though, is just an affordable color smart bulb. While I don't use any of their color bulbs, I do use some smart bulbs from a company called Geeni which are very affordable compared to other smart bulbs. Moving the smart and color aspects to the bulb allows one to use the lamp of their choosing.

    Book Lamps look like the future to me!
    Maybe we could repurpose all those hideous Gideon bibles? Put them to good use for once as a helpful light source.

      I keep mine next to my bed, and I flip it open for bathroom trips, needing no other light. Especially when looking for Aleve for a headache, the book light doesn’t aggravate my head more. I’ve had it for several years and love it. Worth every penny and looks beautiful setting on my bedside table.

    We have the Hueliv floor lamp. We already had the Monster Smart app for a few other lights. The app looks the exact same and you can add Hueliv and other products to it. In fact we recently purchased a Taloya smart ceiling light. Same app worked for it as well. I'm guessing many of these products with different names are produced in the same or similar Chinese manufacturing plants. (Side note do a review on the Taloya or other brand smart ceiling light. We really like the ability to use an app to turn the lights on and off even when we are not home)

      you should be aware that there is massive potential for cyber attacks through ioe devices like that, much greater because it has access to the whole internet (for use from outside the home). The devices themselves aren't secured at all (usually) but have full access to your home network and thus everything on it. make sure that those companies have put sufficient resources into developing security. not having external access, or doing it yourself is always a better option. an easy way to remedy most of these cracks in security is to put the smart devices on a different subnet - just like you might have a guest wifi coming from the same router, or 2 separate 2.4Ghz/5Ghz networks - and only put devices which you don't care about the security of on there

    I stopped using Amazon. Almost half of the electronics I purchased have quirks that make them hard to use.
    Idk if it's the handling of products or if they are slapping brand names on cheap devices.
    I bought a "Made In America" mouse trap that was then shipped to me directly from..... China!

    I have the corner light, albeit with a different remote. The remote for me is not doing it.. but thankfully it came with an app and that is working perfectly. The lamp turned out a great purchase, when I had some friends over it was easy to change to mood and have a more party like environment. I was after a mood light and that is exactly what it does, could not read a book with it.. but great for everything else.

    I think the varied endurance of the notebook lamp is because each color draws different amount of power. Afaik red draws the highest. So if you put it in red or a color that uses red, it won't last that long

    Company's go back to the late 60's early 70's for the lightning ideas? Colors are similar to the original Lava Lamps. Those you set & forget until you enjoyed burns to your fingertips. By the looks of these are they cool to the touch??

    • @deeznuts1358
      @deeznuts1358 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LED’s don’t put off much heat at all, they are efficient and keep cool. Lava lamps use incandescent bulbs. They have to use incandescent’s in a lava lamp to produce heat to get the colored wax inside of the lamp to flow.

    The book light battery life would depend on what light color it is showing, since not all colors need the same power, putting it on red might give it the longest battery life, but I don't know about the color changing if the moment between the colors have any effect

    Was the corner lamp backwards when you filmed? It didn't seem to have a lot of illumination. Fancy lights and stuff but if you wanted to use it for reading or something, it didn't seem all that bright, so that's why I'm curious if it was filmed pointing at the wall.

    You were cycling through the colors of the book, which actually saves the battery rather than keeping it consistently on. Id say, 19 hrs seems right.
